  • Dr Gary Colman has helped to found a new charity that is making use of tabletop gaming to help vulnerable individuals through shared co-operative experiences, collaborative storytelling, and the rolling of many dice!
We talk about Gary’s own history with roleplaying, how he came to tabletop gaming as a therapeutic offering, setting up the charity Game Therapy UK, and whether wargaming like Warhammer and 40k could provide any of the same benefits.

I had to sack off DMing my 5e game tonight because I was too tired after a gruelling few shifts at work… listening to this kind of makes me wish I hadn’t. Absolutely fascinating interview and Gary is a truly wonderful human being

Wow, this was an amazing interview. I worked in the homeless sector in Edinburgh a few years back, and did some gaming with residents. Blood bowl and Space Hulk were big hits! I'm going to drop Gary an email.

Terrific interview and a great subject. I know for a fact that FF books improved my vocabulary, but at school I had a friend who was dyslexic and struggled to get any enjoyment out of them as too much hard work. Which made them prime for playing D&D instead, where they literally had to read and write very little but were fully animated when it came to gameplay and roly playing. It gave him much more confidence to reel off his imagination and really brought out the creative streak in him.
Once again. A great interview. Really very interesting and information. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing. I’m very interested in the intersection of gaming/hobby and mental health. I’m a teacher so I run a Warhammer Alliance and the kids love it, especially neurodivergent kids

As somebody who works with ASD (amongst other things) adults. I am really happy to see Dr. Colman using D&D and other gaming related stuff as therapy. First class

What a great idea 💡 I definitely think there is great merit in a therapeutic approach to tabletop games. I have some things I would happily donate. I will get in touch

This is a fascinating conversation. As a therapist myself, who works with a lot of young people I can totally see the benefits of gaming for mental health. Many games involve team work and problem solving, which is great for helping with anxiety. Totally agree that miniature painting is a good mindfulness exercise as well :)

Another great video and a great idea. As someone on the spectrum (ASD / ASC) I can see the benefits; these games provide a structure to social engagements, taking much of the pressure away from not knowing what's going to happen next yet providing the players with the social engagement we all need. It would be interesting to see if people who engage with the hobby in this way are less inclined to focus on competitive gaming or not.

Another awesome interview, Jordan, and an important one at that! Gary Colman seems like a great guy with his heart in the right place, and the therapeutic benefits of gaming need to be further explored and understood. Loved it!

Yeah... I worry about this. Gaming tables can 💯 be places for abuse, be triggering etc.
So not giving much thought into what is being played and how seems sus to me.

Back end of Covid? Really? You are well versed in empirical evidence based intervention and communication. I suggest to consult the evidence on that topic

If you need therapy, get therapy. I can’t stress how dangerous trying to use a supervised session, especially with a bunch of gamers, is; not only to you, but them.
I recommend everyone conducts veils and lines in session zero and use this for what it is, avoidance

    • @gordonfreeman6305

      A few thoughts.
I agree, people who need therapy should get therapy. However, the wait times are horrendous, or the cost prohibitive.
I disagree about lines and veils - I think that's a shared and understood method of communication that minimises judgement, not avoidance. I wish communication skills didn't need to be taught to adults, but I come across communication issues every single day, for many reasons.

There's already something to address trauma. It's called the discipline of psychiatry.

There are numerous methods of dealing with the issues of mental health. Psychiatric medecine will not be the solution for everyone.
