I agree, the impact of art on setting the atmosphere and fostering imagination is heavily underrated. It's also what makes the books really appealing to buy. I'm glad they focused on that.
@@valterink8997: Yep! That's one of the first actual-plays I watched of D&D, right here on the D&D channel (I think). Long before I knew what a big impact she had at Wizards of the Coast :)

Bring back à la cart to the D&D beyond marketplace. It really helped deciding if I wanted to buy the book or not as a player. Where a DM would be interested in the monsters available in that book. 0:38 - Don't let this distract you from the fact that in 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.
As a new player, I was really intimidated to pick up DnD due to how complicated it always seemed. 5e is already pretty solid for that, and this company is becoming famous for its anti community practices. I would suggest get used copies of the base 5e books. Steer clear from anything new they produce. However, enjoy your stories and your games however you wish.
I would love to preorder from DND Beyond, but I do not want to screw over my FLGS which is amazing! If you had the option to send my FLGS their cut or a preorder then I would happily order from here. We need to continue to fund and support all of our FLGS as well as we can because they are slowly disappearing. As a computer programmer and front-end developer I do realize how difficult that this ask is.
A living campaign that's run at game stores would probably be the best way to provide support. Also giving them exclusive Alt covers every few years to give a boost from collectors.
The biggest fumble that WOTC made was not giving DnD Beyond codes for all physical book purchases that have been made. You want to talk about lighting your money on fire? Personally, I wont be giving Wizards another cent of my hard-earned money, and I suggest any other dungeon masters do the same.
What’s really funny is hearing these guys talk about like the most basic homebrew rules that have been around almost as long as fifth edition and making it sound like there are new ideas that they thought of for the first time
I love this game, despite whatever goes on behind the scenes running the two sessions a week for my D&D groups fills me with so much joy. Excited to see what comes next!
I do not like the restrictions to ability score choices with backgrounds. Custom backgrounds should have been the one thing adapted into the PHB from Tasha's Cauldron.
Pretty sure there'll be a custom background option like there was in the UA. The standard options are for new players and people who want to embrace the flavor.
I've been so encouraged by all the play test content, and the way y'all have talked about your design philosophies, and now all this great art... I'm very excited
It’s interesting to watch the handbook shift from prescriptive to descriptive in some ways. Rather than setting rules, they are now describing how the game has been played for years, sometimes in spite of the rules.
Agreed. The two guys in the video are awesome. I don't doubt their commitment at all. Plus, it is sorta like the church...how much art has it been responsible for sponsoring...
@@Creepernom No, the people who make the game are their own terrible brand of cultists. Fall in line with our ideology or be canceled from the community.
@@NovusIgnisExactly this. I'll stick to 3rd party for any future updates to the game. I never viewed WotC as the arbitrators of the rules anyways. Isn't even their own work. Most of the content in this book are third party content that they're pirating for themselves.
I can remember the playtest material for D&D 3 back in 2000 and I can remember watching Todd covering this stuff way back on MSNBC over 20 years ago. I am gratified that I got to be around to experience all of this.
Which is crazy given that between your spell slots, invocations, pact boons, mystic arcanum, etc warlock is actually one of the more feature intense spellcasters
@@SMXanatharTell that to Volo’s and Tome of Foes. There’s a 0% chance they sell the old books these ones will replace. If you own it already, it’d be earmarked as legacy, but they’re retconning and delisting the original content for release.
I suspect it’ll replace the existing. They mention in the interview that the book can still work for 2014 characters but the old PHB rules will not work with the 2024 characters.
I wondered this too. I own the digital 2014 PHB and I want to buy and check out the new version but I’m in an online campaign where we aren’t switching to the new rules (at least not right away) so I need just the 2014 rules to apply to that character in dndbeyond.

Got my basic set of D&D for Christmas 1980. This was the set with the famous "Keep on the Borderlands" adventure! It's hard to imagine that so much time has gone by and that so many versions have been printed. Looking forward to the new rules. Hoping my wish list gets some answers... better range of weapons... like an actual 1-handed sword (the old broadsword)... that represents the most common sword created in the middle ages... like a Viking sword, or a Crusaders / Knights sword. (NOT a short sword) There have been ongoing arguments of "what is a bastard sword vs what is a long sword" IS a longsword in D&D actually the Bastard Sword from history? I hope there is a return of Master Craft gear. I hope there is a return of more materials and metals for weapons and armor. What are the rules for Siege engines? Trebuchet's, catapults, scorpions, ballista... Can you substitute "Siege Engines" for "Land Vehicle" if you have a military background? Do you use Dex for attacking with a trebuchet? Or do you use wisdom or Intelligence? A massive engine doesn't really rely on agility... Are you disadvantage if you aren't skilled with siege engines? I'm glad there are rules for buildings and construction cost. In many low-magic settings... you don't have a "magic item super center" to spend your piles of gold. So players end up wanting to buy property, or a wizard tower, or a private keep. I've had to wing it or looked to 3rd party sources to come up with costs to buy/build a roadside inn... tower, or a small keep... I can't wait to dive into the bastions rules!
This sounds good. I want art of characters DOING THE ACTUAL ABILITIES of their class. What do some of these look like, such as Turning Undead? Sounds like we are finally getting more spell art. That would be great.
If you decide not to use the 2014 books, you might consider donating them to a local library or school. Many places would like to make that stuff available to the kids and teens who hang out
Here’s hoping the Item Crafting section (in either book) includes options for different materials and such for weapons and armor. Obviously not expecting every creature in the Monster Manual to have a crafting purpose, but rules for making armor out of bone, hide, scales, various metals (not just Mithril and Adamantine), etc.
OMG, I am beyond excited about the new PHB and cannot wait to get my copy this autumn!! 🥰🥰🥰 And I love how everything has been expanded and filled out regarding subclasses! Also really loving all of that gorgeous artwork and how inspirational it is going to be! 🥰🥰🥰
17:33 "We were able to coordinate the work in a way that we had never done before." Hilarious that they've never coordinated the work between the PHB, Monster Manual, and DMG before, but it shows.
In one of their first videos about this edition, I remember they mentioned that in 2014 they had tight deadlines and ended up finishing and releasing the books at different dates, which didn't help. Something along those lines.
That 19th century combat wheelchair scene and that Wild West orc scene were surprises that got me thinking of less common D&D flavors, like some of the 2014 PHB art. I wonder if there are new pictures showing even more, like, say, Arabian Nights, kung fu / wuxia, ninja infiltration, airship exploration, pirate swashbuckling, chanbara sword fighting, ...
i notice beyond has set up preorder for the digital and physical bundle with pre order bonuses but only for the US. I can pre order in the UK from the d&d official site but not as a bundle or wit any preorder bonuses. are others seeing the issue here?
Even though I’m not super super stoked about 5.5 because it’s pretty much just a revamp of fifth edition with nothing super significant that we’ve seen so far, here’s to hoping that I am greatly mistaken, and they completely blow my mind with the new stuff today. I still love dungeons and dragons. It was the first system I ever played back in the Mid90s when I was a teenager and I will always have a special place for dungeons and dragons on my role-play shelf. However, the system is definitely getting really really boring at this point lol for me at least. But I hope that everyone that still enjoys it gets to enjoy it and has many many great adventures for the years to come, here’s another 50 years of dungeons and dragons.
I think it will blow your mind. The changes are pretty significant in areas in which change was sorely needed. The books themselves also sound like they could be the best books, in terms of organization and usability, that D&D has ever given us. Let's hope so. I hope you love it. I hope we all love it.
I disagree. The fighter will be so different and "fresh" that players will not want to play the old version. Also, i suspect many of the species (previously "races") will be different as well and the players will want to play these. This is a different version of 5th.
I mostly skipped 3.5 because I was near the starting point of a very long 3.0 campaign. I'm not sure if I will end up in a similar situation. However I will be jumping into a short campaign as a player to get a sense of what the updated version offers.
Sad to know that Brazil isn't even in the "rest of the world" locations if you wish to buy the physical books.😞. I'll have to wait for Amazon or some other store to have them in store so I can order them.
Strength for perception might be related to something like “Scent” where you try to take a deep breath to smell what might be around you. Also constitution option in the same vein. For dexterity perception I would imagine something along the lines of a “sixth sense” or “Spider Sense” or Will’s goose bumps from Stranger Things where your body senses something off in the environment
I’m hyped! I’ve loved watching these deep dives with Jeremy, Chris, and Todd - really good to understand the process and see behind the screen. Lots of promising changes!
I am so excited for the return to Greyhawk. When we were kids - my brother and I had the huge poster sized maps of Greyhawk on our bedroom wall next to the bunk beds. 😊
This has me really excited for the new 2024 edition rule books. My only play experience with DnD is through BG3, which I loved, & now I'm getting into painting minis (as I await the new PHB, DMG, & MM). The art & overall project's awesome, & I'm looking forward to reading these I hope y'all make more games like BG3. DnD seems like such a well-constructed universe... &, with all that World Building, so much is possible. I'd love to see games, like BG3, that let you take your character to level 20 & feel like you've got as open a world to experience as WoW (but still feature offline modes & are console-friendly). There could even be real-time versions too
I REALLY wish they would add a chapter into the DMG or a separate book down the road that is specifically for props to use during gameplay. I feel there is a massive enabler there they are missing out on to help DM's use props, both made with simple household or dollar store items or more elaborate 3D printable items, which not only feeds in-person experiences, but also could be a good market for WotC such as STL files you could purchase on DnD Beyond. When you talk about enhancing an experience, simple things like parchment paper or a D&D elven or dwarven fonts, the infamous reusable glass/plastic tubes with D4's in them for potions or printable trap/puzzle boxes that go with a specific adventure, really makes the game immersive and fun. In a world with everything digital, keeping a connection to tangible items brings things back to the table.
I’ve made RUclips content about making physical game accessories, and the content is like a dead fish in water. I’m not sure it’s something with mass market appeal.
@@TheTerrainWizard Well, you just got yourself another subscriber. People these days want to lean into digital for everything because they lose sight of the game and it's true meaning...A bunch of people socially gathering, expressing themselves, and telling stories in a safe environment. Oh, and having fun doing it and not having to pay a therapist. I'm good with digital character sheets and I've written my own Access database with forms for battle tracking and campaign tracking. But I stick to the social source of feeding imagination when it comes to the game itself. Props help with that and I use them religiously. People love being handed a half-burned note or a puzzle box with an artifact or encrypted message inside or moving figures around to better strategize how the attacks flush out. I'll watch your videos for sure.
@@switchimpulse I can agree with that. To build on that, those small businesses would do a lot better with Wizards offering a partner portal to promote them better. The added content in the books could be as simple as discussing how to incorporate tangible things into your world building. Not really the "what" or from "Who" in the books. That would be better suited for the D&D portals also look for places such as x-products. It would be a win for Wizards to show they support the community and a win for the businesses who can grow as a result of royalty-free acknowledgement. That can be Wizards way of paying it forward.
This all sounds awesome! More options, but delivered in a way that's easier to understand, and much easier for newer players to get into the game. I can't wait!
@@skycrafter2042 only some of them. Fighter for example still gets abilities at the same levels, but cleric, warlock, sorcerer, and any other class that got their subclass before level 3 and got features at different levels than the 2024 versions are going to need a little "fixing".
Why are more people not talking about this? Why are they rolling them out 1 by 1? Just wait until they’re all done and release them all at once, otherwise the vision of 5.5 isn’t there. I honestly think this edition might catch hate just for that alone because people are going to experience 5.5 characters on 5E rules and not be able to play the game as intended for 2-4 months, and 2-4 months is plenty of time for people to move on and/or swear off 5.5, as if plenty haven’t already after the OGL incident.
Potions requiring a bonus action to drink always made sense, especially when one of the examples of free item interactions in the players handbook is literally chugging from a flagon of ale.
There’s an entire section in the DM’s toolbox on curses? Maybe we’ll see a much improved version of the remove curse spell! I made a buffed homebrew version to include a wider variety of magic under the “curses” umbrella because I love the concept of dark magic so much, so I’m definitely excited to see where they go with that!
Really excited about this! The impact of art on setting the atmosphere and fostering imagination is heavily underrated. It's also what makes the books really appealing to buy. I'm glad they focused on that.
Every time y'all treat fighters as "they should be simple" it feels like an insult to our intelligence and a reason to just keep casters stronger. It ain't like mass-warriors cutting waterfalls and or other epic feats is limited to anime. That happens in Celtic myth, Greek myth, myth in general. God, let fighters be wu-xia/Tuatha de danaan nonsense with equal epic power to casters.
As a subclass. Or an alternate fighter. I would not like that personally. There should be classes that can win without being epic. It feels like a simple man standing against mythic monsters. If fighter starts to walk on water - then that feeling would be crashed.
I don't think the dude with a sword and shield with some armor and maybe a bow should be at equal power as a wizard who can literally bend reality. I think the role play gos out the window because at what point are you now a spell caster in order to match that level?
I'm excited for this! I'm also interested to see how the general TTRPG community will refer to it colloquially. It seems like a pretty straightforward 5.5E and that feels simplest to me. Remember that not all of the 2024 Core Rulebooks are coming out in 2024 so I see that phrasing becoming difficult over time.
@@20storiesunder Yup, I've seen it. I am so happy they're not a half-caster like they were at one point in the UA. Now I'm actually a bit worried that they might be too good. xD
@@TweaksDIRT That sounds awesome. I'm not sure it's something into which WotC would want to invest, but one could always visit a bookbinder to have their core books merged. There are some cool rebinding videos on RUclips.
Im curious what the chicken and the egg is here with some stuff in Baldur's Gate 3. There are so many things in BG3 (mechanics, names, etc.) that are in this new version. Wildheart Barbarian is the biggest indicator for me that makes me wonder if Larian's work inspired some of these changes or if these changes were being worked on in the early alpha of BG3.
Remember everyone! Regardless of how exciting this is, NO Preorders! Pre-orders as a concept only hurt the consumers. Wait for it to be released, wait for the reviews.
They should make it that when you buy a physical book, you get a dnd beyond code that you can enter to get the book on the website. Codes are all randomly generated and stuff as usual. That way we don't have to pay twice for the same bo- oh right, wizards of the coast.
I pre-ordered the new PHB since the new rules and additions look promising. I'll probably use it like a sort of 5.5e where I take the best rules from both versions to run the kind of game my players prefer
MSRP of the PH, per edition (CPI-inflation-adjusted): 1989 2e: $20 ($49) 1995 2e revised: $25 ($50) 2000 3e: $20 ($35) 2003 3.5e: $30 ($50) 2008 4e: $35 ($50) 2014 5e: $50 ($64) 2024 5e: $60 I did the math out of curiosity, but I'm amazed at how often it came out to $50
I won't judge a book by its cover, as the updated rules seem good, and this books might be great, but I'll judge the cover itself: the default cover art is pretty bad imho. In the monster manual we see a spellcaster casting a spell right in front of a beholder antimagic eye, and none of the characters seems intimidated by it enough to even look at it, it should be the main threat and the focus of the charatcers attention, possibly showcasing it's antimagic ability. In the player's handbook, the gold dragon anatomy is a total mess, I can't understand what pose it's in, or why its right arm and wings seem malformed and out of proportion. This is partially hidden by the cropping of the cover, but in the full image it's clear there's something wrong. The characters too have very odd poses, in particular the ranger legs, the arms of the spellcaster are awkwardly posed, almost backward, and her staff interacts oddly with her cloak going behind it instead of in front of it. The knight in the front too has some golden light reflecting on his gauntlets that don't seem to make sense, I suppose it's intended to be a reflection of the wizard's spell, but the light shouldn't bounce there, it's out of place, and it breaks the silhouette of the gauntlet. The alternative covers do a significantly better job, as the art is more stylized, less cluttered, and has a clear artistic direction.
Ughhh, I can’t stop myself so I’ll probably be grabbing the books as soon as they release, but I likely won’t be playing this version until I finish my current 5e campaign which is set to finish around the end of 2025.
I can stop myself. After the last year or so of the Hasbro/WotC stunts, I'm done with them. Moved on to Tales of the Valiant and Dragonbane, and watching DC20 with great interest.

Curious if others agree with me but I will have to use the 2014 PH for wizards as they only gave 4 subclasses in the new PH. Not sure why they would do that but I suspect they will market those subclasses in other books.
Yeah, very weird to only have 4 of the 8 schools of magic present. Guess the Conjurers, Necromancers, Enchanters, and Transmutationists gotta fork over more cash to play their characters, and have to wait for it too.

Fairly minor thing but I'm very excited to hear the summoning spells are being adjusted to give more variety and options, trying to marry the cool variety of the 2014 conjure spells, without being as laughably busted and flooding the initiative to track some selfish guy who summons 8 wolves
33:18 ... Negative... This can and will be done. You guys cooked... but for all intents and purposes this needs to be a thing people can do. As a DM and as a player. There might be some changes I want 5e for and some I want 2024 for. My players, totally want Weapon Spec backported into 5e, and I will do it by hand if I must for them.
I'd like to know how much of the changes that Baldur's Gate 3 made to the 5e rules were inspired by the changes in development for the new version of D&D, and the other way around too, how much of the changes to D&D were inspired by the choices Baldur's Gate 3 made? For example, in BG3 using a potion is a bonus action. Did BG3 make that change first or did they do that knowing that the 2024 version of D&D would work that way?

What’s really funny is hearing these guys talk about like the most basic homebrew rules that have been around almost as long as fifth edition and making it sound like there are new ideas that they thought of for the first time
I love this game, despite whatever goes on behind the scenes running the two sessions a week for my D&D groups fills me with so much joy. Excited to see what comes next!

2024 Player's Handook - 17 September 2024
2024 Dungeon Master's Guide - 12 November 2024

I do not like the restrictions to ability score choices with backgrounds. Custom backgrounds should have been the one thing adapted into the PHB from Tasha's Cauldron.
Pretty sure there'll be a custom background option like there was in the UA. The standard options are for new players and people who want to embrace the flavor.
Hoping for a look at table of contents or the index

It’s interesting to watch the handbook shift from prescriptive to descriptive in some ways. Rather than setting rules, they are now describing how the game has been played for years, sometimes in spite of the rules.
My love of this silly game overrides my distaste for the horrible corporate mind flayers.

How is the new PHB going to work in DnD Beyond? Will there be a toggle for using only the 2014 era books?
It's probably the same as the existing legacy content being on a toggle.
Hopefully they will finally offer a complete list of books to allow or exclude.
It should also be a "campaign" restriction for the DM to set.

Dont get me wrong, I know Chris and other developers have talked with THOUSANDS of players and masters, and I liked A LOT the U.A... but this videos are not it.
(NOT a short sword)
There have been ongoing arguments of "what is a bastard sword vs what is a long sword" IS a longsword in D&D actually the Bastard Sword from history?
That would be great.
just recently got (back) into DND because my 13 year old wanted to play. Just bought the 2014 books. Gonna have to pick these up too. lol

Here’s hoping the Item Crafting section (in either book) includes options for different materials and such for weapons and armor.
What's 5.5
@@solarisdevorakthese new core rulebooks they’re talking about aren’t going to be “dnd 6e”, they’re updating and adding to 5e

Strength for perception might be related to something like “Scent” where you try to take a deep breath to smell what might be around you. Also constitution option in the same vein.

This has me really excited for the new 2024 edition rule books. My only play experience with DnD is through BG3, which I loved, & now I'm getting into painting minis (as I await the new PHB, DMG, & MM). The art & overall project's awesome, & I'm looking forward to reading these
I hope y'all make more games like BG3.
Nah let's keep it in the hands of third party small businesses, Hasbruh doesn't need any more money
I can't wait!
fingers crossed for guidance on using xanathar's and tasha's subclass with the 2024 classes like there is for races and backgrounds
subclasses can \be used with there new 2024 classes as is
@@skycrafter2042 only some of them. Fighter for example still gets abilities at the same levels, but cleric, warlock, sorcerer, and any other class that got their subclass before level 3 and got features at different levels than the 2024 versions are going to need a little "fixing".
So, why are they not releasing all three at once?

I’m actually kinda excited about this now!
There’s an entire section in the DM’s toolbox on curses? Maybe we’ll see a much improved version of the remove curse spell!
The fighter video they released was actually not bad, they got some cool tactical abilities. So they aren't dumb but perhaps easier to play
@@20storiesunder I still hate that they know maneuvers should be baseline but steer clear
You should watch the fighter video...
The tracking sheets are going to be a godsend

I'm excited for this! I'm also interested to see how the general TTRPG community will refer to it colloquially. It seems like a pretty straightforward 5.5E and that feels simplest to me. Remember that not all of the 2024 Core Rulebooks are coming out in 2024 so I see that phrasing becoming difficult over time.

This drop (all 3 included) is gunna be crazzyyy , me and my friends got into this just in time 🔥🔥
I won't judge a book by its cover, as the updated rules seem good, and this books might be great, but I'll judge the cover itself: the default cover art is pretty bad imho.
Wait Wait? ARE those?

Pre orders on DNDBeyond don’t seem to work from Canada? I’ve never had this issue before.
Really looking forward to this
