Auxiliary drive belt (fan belt) replacement on Freelander 2/LR2

- Fitting a new auxiliary drive belt, or "fan belt" as some people call it, and new tensioner pulley on a 2009 Land Rover Freelander 2 XS.
This is the belt on the side of the engine which is visible, not the cam/timing belt which is hidden.
This belt drives the air con, power steering, and alternator. If this belt fails then you can still drive the car for a short distance on the remaining battery charge, but the steering will be VERY heavy. If your steering has suddenly got heavy and the battery charge warning light has come on a short time later, then this belt has probably failed and will need replacing. I recommend changing the tensioner pulley at the same time as it makes fitment much much easier. The tensioner is ~£50 from Euro Car Parts.
Centre bolt is 25Nm, T50 torx bit
Thank you, for your informative video instruction. My belt snapped, this morning and getting the car back home, was quite a fight, regarding steering. After watching your video, I'm now confident, that it's a task I can do myself. I'm one of those drivers, that operates by driving and neglecting the mechanics, so thank you again, for the video and the burdensome cost saved, by not having to take the car to a garage.
what a great teacher, I would never have attempted this job, but now its my next project.
Thank you! Good luck with the belt change! Let us know how it went.
Just did it. Thanks to your video. I couldn't push the old tensioner away so I just cut the belt. The worst part was to remove the pin!!!
At last a good quality video with clear steps. Il go do mine now. Thanks 👍
You are amazing. Yet again a great video presented so well. How you do all this on your own with a phone is inspirational. 👍👍👍👍
Another very handy video!! The second one of yours I've used to help me with my wife's Freelander. Keep up the great work, you instill confidence with the fact you are doing the repairs with simple tools, outside with a jack and axel stands...keep them coming!!!
Thank you Gavin, so nice to read feedback like this!
So glad I found your post, I have this job to do this weekend and now quite looking forward to it. Thanks for taking the time to film and explaining your process , a real Diamond.
Again, thanks to you I did it in half hour. Nice one mate 🙂👍
I had the idler go on my previous Freelander - this time it's the tensioner, but I think I'll just replace the idler as well, for all it costs and while I'm in there. Wonderfully clear - thank you for your time and effort.
Thanks Norman! Yes, do both pulleys. My idler failed shortly after I replaced the tensioner.
Good job and well explained
Thanks alot i found the way how to change it.
This save me money and time Thank you very much and best wishes for you .
Very helpful, clear and precise!
Dan, thank you, glad you found it useful
Mines developed that noise over a couple of weeks, job for tomorrow if I can get the parts
A brit knows their own vehicles👍
Hi, jeez you made that look so handy! What about lining up the marks on the crank shaft for the belt to be lined up properly? And what about the water pump replacement?
Not being picky just wondering? Cheers
This is the auxiliary drive belt not the timing belt
Thank you. Much appreciated.
Nice video. Thank you
Good video first decent one of watched, although I’ve got an evoque the same stuff applies
Good tractor!
Hi.
Did you by any chance do a video of a cam belt change, same vehicle?
I found your delivery very clear and easy to understand.
No sorry, I got my local garage to do my cam belt as it looked a bit too advanced for me to do at home
Ok thanks
I've watched this video at least 5 times now! Did you have to change the idler/guide pulley at a later date (from the comments below)?
Is it mounted on a bracket that has to come off with it? I couldn't see how to remove it as it seems to have a cover over where the nut would go through it.
Yes, I did the idler shortly after. Should have changed that too when I did the tensioner. The idler has a plastic dust cover over the bolt. Simply prise it off with a screwdriver.
Did you ever get round to having a go at compressor clutch mate ?
No, not tried that yet
@@BeavisPits new ones are around £90 on eBay, I'll check mine when I replace these parts next week now.🤞they lasts that long
Very helpful, I have to replace mine. ***** star
HELP! Hi awesome clear video, but i need a bit of help, i am getting a bit of a howl on just a particular low rpm, doesnt matter if car is stationary, in gear or in motion coming to a stop, I can generate the howl when slightly tapping the accelerator pedal, and I mean just a tap, could this be caused by a bad pulley i.e. one of the ones showed in your videos. Mine is a 07 Freelander 2 Manual. Very good acceleration, no smoke etc!
It could be a pulley or may be a split hose. Get someone else to dab the throttle while you listen in the engine bay.
Awesome thanks for response
My belt just snapped and I’m at the in laws during a bank holiday weekend.
Can’t find any parts stores open so I’m stuck with the in laws until next weekend when I can get the parts and fit them. 😢
I carry a spare belt and tensioner under the boot floor, just in case. No eurocarparts near you?
@@BeavisPitsI moved to Romania and it was a national holiday so nothing was open.
Brother in law managed to find a belt from a family friend who owns a parts store.
Put the belt on, immediately snapped again.
Turns out the alternator pulley is bust, the end cap/rail to stop the belt slipping off is gone.
New pulley and belt fitted and all is good again, for now.
Also, do you have any videos of the boot handle/trim?
The entire trim came off in my hand a few weeks back - broken brackets and is being held on with zip ties. Wondering what it’s supposed to look like on the back side of the boot trim where the plate lights are
@user-bc3zs2wn5z the alternator pulley has some kind of one way freewheel clutch inside it apparently and this can fail.
I did a boot handle upgrade last summer.
thank you for the video!
may i ask: if i just need to take off "fan belt" without change the "tensioner pulley",
so i unscrew the tensioner pulley then take off the belt. put a new belt on. then i just need to tighten back the tensioner pulley??? or the black disk of the " tensioner pulley" can not be tighten back ???
You can do this, by using a socket and long handle on the tensioner nut to pull it away from the belt, but it is much easier if you change the tensioner too as new pulleys come with a locking pin which you pull out after refitting the belt.
@@BeavisPits thank you for the answer! happy new year!!!
@@BeavisPits thank you for the answer!
Can you change the alternator this way or do you need to remove the power steering pump?
This belt will need slackening off to remove it from the alternator pulley. Ideal time to renew the tensioner and idler too. You should be able to reach down and remove the alternator without removing the PAS pump but I’ve never tried it.
Is it same for for left hand drive, because this is the easy way to access the belt
having seen your vid i changed the belt and tensioner and like yours most of the noise went away but like in your vid still have a knocking sound, is this normal?
Probably. It is a diesel after all.
Hello ,
Thank you for the video, is this a 1 hour job? I'm being charged 3 hours which is like €150 is correct ?
Approx 1 hour for a first timer. Experienced mechanic should be able to do this in about 30mins. Sounds like you are being charged for the ‘timing belt’ change, or simply being ripped off!
@@BeavisPits tnx for clarifying ye it's a rip-off

When do you need to replace the timing belt?
Cam belt is 144k miles, but aux belt is whenever it wears out
Do you have the SKF part number, I live in Spain and they dont recognise the VIN Number? sorry to be a pest. VIN SALLNAAE73A277616
The Dayco belt I fitted : www.eurocarparts.com/p/dayco-drive-belt-202771265
The SKF tensioner is : www.eurocarparts.com/p/skf-drive-belt-tensioner-326591330
@@BeavisPits Thanks you are a star, will le you know how I get on.
Hi. What is the exact part number of the pulley installed? TIA
I'm pretty sure it is LR003651
Hi again. Is there a torque setting for the tightening the Torx bolt in? Or is it just as hard as you can with a breaker bar?
Haynes doesn’t say. I just tightened it a reasonable amount by hand with a ratchet. Breaker bar would be too tight. That’s only needed for moving the pulley rather than tightening the torx screw.
Yeah ok, thanks for the reply. I can’t find my Haynes book but your video is enough to guide me through.
45 Nm according to LR workshop manual
I need the number of the bell
Belt is LR000996
