Sailing downwind either directly or on a broad reach is perfectly fine with just the headsail. I’ve traveled 100’s of miles with just the headsail out. Reducing sail is called reefing. Good luck with learning, sailing the best thing I’ve ever done. Also I did see a comment on learning how to heave to. It’s absolutely essential to learn in case of storm, rest, injury. It’s easy to do. Just go into a tack but don’t release your jib sheet. Keep the tiller hard over like you want to tack back and tie it off. The boat will stall and slowly make way.
Thanks. Yes, I know how to heave to. I had to in a pinch during an earlier video when my furler jammed up on me right before my approach to the MacKinac Bridge. Wasn't a fun moment, but heaving to gave me what I needed to go up to the bow and sort everything out.
New subscriber here! I too knew nothing about sailing and bought a boat last year(hunter 27). I had one lesson and a lot of pointers from helpful people at my marina. I mostly sailed around Sandusky area on Erie but I sure packed it in. 150 days slept on the boat, roughly 70 days out on the lake, 15 nights at anchor and 15 nights at other marinas. Next summer I plan on trekking up to the north channel with a few boats from my marina. Maybe we’ll cross paths 😊. Smooth sailing
Hey buddy you should really learn how to heave to so you can square away the gear issues. Your Triton with the full keel should heave to very well and be stable enough for you to do whatever you need to safely. Keep learning and keep sailing ⛵️🙌🏼🫡

I learned this the hard way. Always use ethanol free gas in your outboard. The ethanol will really ruin an otherwise good day. Also, thanks for the content and good on you for toughing it out.
Heywood island is a great anchorage. Nice jump off point across georgian bay or when going west to the north channel. I agree with little current.. Ok facilities. At least there is groceries etc. But they could be better.
You complain like an old man :D Im 53 and have just bought a boat - still waiting for the first trip on mine - enjoy the time on the boat where YOU are the master and everything is depend on YOU :)
Dude you urgently need to have a way to lock your rudder in position, so you are free to do things in the boat. A line and a couple of cleats would do the job. Sheet to tiller wouldn’t be bad idea either
