  • Lots of Christians interested in prophecy talk about the tribulation period (aka, the “Great Tribulation”), but they never seem to get around to asking where the idea comes from. In this episode we explore the development of the eschatological tribulation idea in Second Temple Jewish literature up to and including the time of Jesus. Surprisingly, asking what the tribulation meant in the actual New Testament era is a recent strategy of scholars - and something that never happens in popular prophecy teaching.

When I was in a Christian high school, I was required to read a Christian fiction book each year for a book report. I picked the left behind series, since the other options at the time were terrible. The Left behind series was pretty bad, but I should have read something by CS Lewis instead.

So glad I saw this.. even though I like the "feel good" effort of the prophecy guys, I am really tired of "He is coming soon" loose date setters pointing accusing fingers at those looking for signs in the heaven date setters. What is the difference between saying look at the signs in the stars for His coming and the more broadly put "He is coming Soon!" . I love prophecy but I love learning more about our Saviour. Dr. Mike is bringing the word off Mt. Sinai and teaching us how to read it. Not bored yet Dr. Mike. Thank You...

I have come to see prophecy as an overarching view. It all happens in the passages that happen over thousands (or number) of years until the end. Some has happened and some has not.
It makes me think that our whole timeline and is a big lie and since the future view is blind man walking there is no telling what or when the end will come. This is convicting and a lot to think about.

    • @mcoz6934
      @mcoz6934 3 года назад

Yeah, we're not supposed to know. We're supposed to remain faithful & always be ready. Just like Israelites in Egypt were supposed to eat the Passover lamb fully dressed & ready to go. Just like the parable Jesus told of the servants waiting at the gate for their master, because they never knew when he would return.

But in Daniels 70th week, it is in 2 parts. Each part is 3 1/2 years. It is not one 7 year period. I mean yes, it is a total of 7 years. But they are not 7 consecutive years. There is a separation in the middle. That is easy to see that in the writing in Daniel. The first 3 1/2 years is the 3 1/2 years of the Messiah, ending when he is "cut off", i.e., dies, his ministry ends, his Witness, the Witness that he loves the father, "that the world may know that I love the Father", happens. The second 3 1/2 years are the 3 1/2 years of the Two Witnesses talked about in Revelation. And their Witness ends after 3 1/2 years.
I am beginning to wonder if there is 2 tribulations, the first during the time of the Messiah, and second, the "Great" tribulation, during the time of the Two Witnesses. I mean, two 3 1/2 year time periods of tribulation.

Vijeyarajah Saverus that parable is about the Jews. They haven’t done what they were supposed to but now Jesus is there and he’s giving them one more chance to bear fruit before they are disinherited. Some responded and believed the gospel but many others did not and thus the temple was destroyed and they were put into slavery or killed. At that point the vine was cut. The kingdom of God is now, all ready here but not yet brought to fruition and the body of Christ is the church. John the Baptist’s ministry was to declare the arrival of the kingdom of God and when Christ ascended and sat down at the right hand of the Father it was inaugurated. Christ is reigning as king and He must logically have a kingdom to reign over; We are His body on earth and we are the new temple. Christ himself declares the kingdom in Luke 11:18-20/Matthew 12:27-28 and Paul clearly states we are the body in 1 Cor 12:27

All throughout history, God's faithful followers have been persecuted & killed _because_ they're faithfulness to righteousness & holiness among wicked people & wicked nations _magnified the evil_ of those who hate God & His Truth, _magnified the weight of guilt_ on their consciences, prompting hatred for & violence against the faithful.... However, _through this very persecution_ God has advanced His Kingdom & the renown of His Name, gathering more sheep into the flock because of it. From the prophets, to Christ Himself, to the Apostles, to early Christians throughout the first few centuries, to medieval burnings at the stake, to the Reformers, to religious freedom Pilgrims, to the Soviet Union, to Communist China, to modern America.... We honor God & show His worth & value when we reject all the sinful trappings in which everyone else indulges, when we remain faithful in the face of hatred & violence & rejection of society. We tell the world:
"My God is _far more valuable & precious_ than anything this world has to offer. You may take my possessions, you may take my freedoms, you may even take my life, _but you'll never take away my Jesus_ !!"

Couple disagreement with his observations especially when he speaks about the temple, John doesn't say that there is no temple, he says "I don't see no temple because God almighty is the temple" wich is different from no temple.
Plus there are the letters of the churches, and at the end of each one, it ends up almost the same way, "he who overcome will sit on the throne with me". There is always a temple description, i doubt that you can fit this into a preterist view.

The Great Commission to preach the Gospel around the world is the project to recall the lost tribes of Israel, along with any others who will convert to Christianity. When that is completed, the Exile will be ended because all of the children of Israel who will respond will have been regathered into the family of God. God knows who He has chosen, who he is calling to hear and accept the Gospel, and they will also know the travail of being in exile as the last days come upon us, leading up to Jesus' return. Look at the persecution of the Church, especially where it is gathering in the most new converts. When that becomes global in scope, THAT is the final Tribulation.

Just to add, I don't think that even your average Christian believes that a physical third temole would be good or right. They know they are the living stones of the third temple.
However, what a common church message I run across is that the Jewish people continue to reject the sacrifice of Jesus, and will thus build a physical third temple in error, and once again begin sacrifices, again in error. In fact, some writers maintain that these false sacrifices are the catalyst for the 7 year tribulation to kick off, as God cannot allow this to continue, and the end goal, as noted in Revelation, is to have Israel finally kneel before Jesus as their king.

The tribulation comes in two phases, because God loves to use typology. The first exile, into Babylon, ends after the lesser tribulation... but the second exile, after the destruction of the second temple did not end until after the great tribulation, which would have consumed all of Jacob if it had not been shortened. The Holocaust caused the great ingathering of the Jews to see the rebirth of the nation of Israel, in 1948. So many times we see God giving us a hint in an event or person that prefigures what He's planning to do later.
And Jesus' two parables of the fig tree, are clear to observe today. The tree that was withered, because it was not yet the right season for fruit, has once again turned green, and it is beginning to yield its fruit, as the Jews in Israel are hearing the Gospel and many are responding to follow their Messiah!
The return of the lost ten tribes was prefigured by the events of Pentecost, but the final full return is waiting for the Christians to declare their allegiance to Christ returned to Jerusalem as its King. Many of us have Israelite blood, but do not know it, and the rest are from the nations who have been liberated from the lesser gods.

How about we look for a literal temple because Ezekiel 40 thru 46 in the greatest of detail says there will be

David didn’t live in the temple lmao. The fact that he even has to say that and that people believe that is beyond hilarious 😂

David did not live in the temple period but he was alive with the tabernacle which was a temple the dwelling place of God. David wanted to move it and he even tried to move the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem but was not to be. There was a temple but not the way everyone thinks. It just was not in Jerusalem. It was a moving dwelling place of God and the articles were there. So was Gods presence which was evident in when David tried to move the Ark in the incorrect way. So the use of the word temple has been incorrectly used in many ways. No a permanent temple did not exist but the dwelling place of God did.

@@sharonburgin1710 you seem to miss that David later moved the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem correctly (2 Sam 6:13-17). But you are certainly correct that the temple was not built until after his death

🤔💭 We often think so incredibly _1 dimensional_ & arrogantly think we've fully grasped & understood a particular matter, when in fact _Truth & reality_ are so incredibly _multi-dimensional_ .... Regarding both Scripture & science, God & governments, both His story & history, both Providence & persons, both spiritual & physical, both ourselves & others.... We're more like _tiny ants_ trying to comprehend Quantum Physics!!😆

Luke and Matthew's accounts on end times are different in every way.
One given privately to only four disciples.
    Another given to all.
When Jerusalem was surrounded by the armies in 70 AD, Christians knew they had to get out of town. And so they did.
Those who did not believe Jesus' message - stayed and died (1.5 million of them)
And abominable thing was never set up in the 2nd temple.
Now. Another private briefing of Yahshua speaks about end times abomination of desolation mentioned by prophet Daniel (chapter 12). And we have not seen a great tribulation (unequalled ) to anything earth had ever endured!
I think the great scholar is wrong in his thinking, because desolation of Israel 10 tribes was multiplied according to the Law 7 times!
Ezekiel's laying on one side for the sins of house of Israel 390 days (one day for each year!)
    390×7= 2730 years.
Considering the history that the house of Israel's 10 northern tribes started to be scattered roughly in 722 BC,
--- we are very close to regathering of lost 10 tribes!
Your great learning Michael is leading you astray!

Definitely don't tie it to salvation. Even the Apostles did not get it right and Jesus did not hold it against them.

I think Dr. Hesler may be a closet preterist. If so, I wish he would come out and say it. But, his listenership would evaporate... a bridge too far. The preterist view aligns with old and new testament scripture far better than any futurist view. Love his podcasts.

18:30 all of that was fulfilled when yeshua came to live. because they killed God’s anointed, or he did it to himself to curse us to destruction, as jonah did to nineveh, the tribulation is the whole second half of the divine week, a day is as a thousand years. nothing needs to be fulfilled twice, but we never learn.
see: jeremiah 9:16 that makes a lie of all the promises of peace.

israel wasn’t in exile when yeshua came to them! this is subterfuge for the lie that the revelation isn’t mostly fulfilled. that is so clearly a lie that i just lost all respect for michael heiser. they were very happy under roman rule. so happy, in fact, that they declined their king!
