  • This episode of the podcast raises a straightforward question: Does God ever deceive anyone? While listeners might think the answer must be in the negative, that actually isn’t the case. This episode considers several passages where God uses deception and suggests the same to biblical figures. We also consider related questions, such as: Is deception the same thing as lying? and, If God uses deception, how are we to think about that? Are there ramifications for personal ethics?

Several years ago, Brother Andrew of Open Doors wrote a book titled "The Ethics of Smuggling" It was in this book where I learned of the story concerning God's instructions to Samuel concerning the anointing of David. I appreciate this video which added to the instructions which I learned from Brother Andrew. He would smuggle Bibles, Christian literature and ministry materials behind the Iron Curtains of the Soviet Union and China.

Thank you so very much for bringing the legal context of "Thou shalt not bear false witness" into the conversation. I have tried so many times to explain the cultural and legal context of this commandment to show it is not an absolute command to truth telling, however the point is often missed. It is nice to hear a distinguished scholar support the correct contextual application. Huge fan of your work.

Doubting Didymus don't you think it was more for testifying falsely against someone? Like "I saw that man leave the house" when you weren't even there to see them or were there and didn't see him but said you did because of threat, your own belief, to protect someone else, or for personal gain to you or for someone else. God bless.

I had a conversation in a comment of a video on deception. I tried to help the brother to understand the point Dr. Heiser has made. I told them we studied this in our Situation Ethics course in Bible college back in the 80s, I think I really scared him. He said "I don't think the Lord would like me to be talking to you" I felt bad because its hard to make an argument in the comments. I could not explain the "Truth"
I am glad I found this episode as it explained it better than I had. I think I will send him the link. Of course, I will use deception and use a Pseudepigrapha name. lol

Liked your funny back an forth at the first of the video about studying ethics. We were required to take a 4-hour ethics class at the IRS years ago, and of course, I had to teach it after I took it myself! Lol! How do you impose ethics on sinners? Crazy 😜 (Just having a little fun)

They wouldn’t have crucified Jesus Christ if they had known who he was for the sake of “reversing” the effects/ redeeming the list world. The withholding of the specific details [from the rulers of this world] of GOD’s plan was perhaps a huge example of this idea of GOD allowing delusion to propel his judgement of sin.

2Th 2:11 For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false. It doesn't look, in this case, that God was "withholding" something, but"sending" something... ??

I think to comment on this comment, think about Ahab, and the lying spirit that was sent to him that Dr. Heiser references earlier in this podcast episode.
That is an example of God, probably sending a deluding influence to Ahab, because at that point, he was judging Ahab for his lack of repentance.
      But that’s just a thought.
I’ll leave it for your consideration

Psalm 18 comes to mind as a prove text to what Michael is saying:
With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
    Psalm 18:25‭-‬26 ESV

I am so late to this video but so blessed. Also one thing that came to mind is that I don’t think people realize that the entire plan of salvation to save the human race hinged on the forces of darkness the spiritual creatures in rebellion not knowing the full plan of salvation as Paul said (and I’m paraphrasing) “if they knew the outcome they would’ve never killed Jesus” so clearly deception and mine are not the same thing when it comes to the subject matter

Even Jesus Christ said of Lazarus, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.” And ultimately had to clarify that he was indeed dead.

This was brilliant, Holy Spirit inspired. I praise His name for all of you.
Now, similar to David calling for the ephod in Keilah, Jesus may have denied the apostles knowledge that the blame of Satan in Judas would stand without distraction, so that the 11 would be without blame or guilt or inadvertently participate in The Wiles of the demons the Jesus would lose none that were given to Him.
I treasure this message from above. Thank you. For answering the apocryphal question of will He find faith at His return. Indeed He will find enduring faith. I see it, hear it prophetically alive and living. All glory to Yahweh.

    Consider the wisdom of Solomon.
He judged between two women both claiming to be the mother of a child. He tricked the women into revealing their true feelings and relationship to the child by suggesting to cut the baby in two, each woman to receive half.
By this, Solomon discovered who truly loved the child the most (and was the real mother of the child.)
It is about wisdom, discernment, discretion and ultimately compassion.
    Can you be too truthful?
When Jimmy Carter was elected president he had to face a hostile press who took advantage of his being a Christian and a moral man.
They asked him if he had ever committed adultery.
He said, "Yes, in his heart". (by a strict teaching of the Bible)
You can imagine what the press did with that !
There are some people who are not sincere when they ask questions about the Bible. Rather, they are looking to discredit or attack the Bible or the person they ask.
They do not deserve an answer.
There are some people who are not able to understand the answer if it were given.
Our Lord Jesus told His apostles He had many things to tell them but they were not able to
    understand them yet.
Sometimes you have to be creative. If a 3 year old asks you why the sky is blue do you give the scientific answer?
At that age they are not able to understand the true answer. But, they do have a wonderful imagination and a playfulness. So you can explain -
God made the dirt and painted it brown.
Then God made the trees and painted them green.
God made animals and people and painted them many different colors.
Finally, God made the sky and the only color He had left was blue.
So God painted the sky blue.

lw216316 yeah I’m starting to rethink what the 9th commandment teaches us and what does it really mean that God does not lie. Would God lie to protect Jews living in an attic to protect them from the nazi’s or something like that? I’m thinking God forbids lying when for example you were called to the stand as a witness against your friend who did something bad and you lied to the whole court saying he was innocent and so forth or you spreading false information against somebody to degrade them. With God lying, I think it’s more and long the lines of he keeps his promises and whenever he swears that he would do something he would do it like his judgments unless they repent

Michal saved David’s life from her father King Saul by letting David down through a window to let him flee and escape. She even lied on his behalf by making it look like he was sick in bed and lying to Saul’s messengers. When confronted about it, she then doubled down, and lied about her deception.

Nkh: John 3:16-17. For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved.
And this is the confidence, that we have in Him that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us, and we know that if He hears us we have the petitions that we desire of Him. So I am asking that He will make Himself real and personal to you, and since I know that your salvation is His will, I believe He will do this. Your will is involved, but why would you turn down so great a Gift?
