This is my favorite song, so I greatly appreciate seeing this video on the channel.
It's about PTSD. A guy enlisting to be in the US military, thinking he's going to defend people's rights and be a hero, but going overseas to a country filled with oil, murdering innocent civilians in front of their kids because he's ordered to, watching all the good people he spent months training with be shot in the head or lose their legs to landmines or bleed out in front of him, then all he gets when his tour is over is a decent payday and to go back home to people who aren't grateful for what he's done. They call him a murderer and tell him he's just a tool of the government, and he has nightmares every night of all the innocent people he feels have died for nothing. He has to justify to himself his reasons for going, and what really went missing in action is the part of his mind where he could be content and not have the guilt which consumes his soul. The gang vocal part represents a military funeral. M. Shadows' vocal change at the end was actually him crying in the studio, and it represents not only sorrow and regret, but also this young guy carrying the weight of years many people won't get to live. The character in the song is no longer able to be a young, innocent man with how many lives he saw meet their end.
Synyster Gates has said the main solo, the one split into 3 segments, is the hardest he ever played. This song is technical beyond belief, and that definitely applies to The Rev's drumming as well. This song may not be your #1 so far, but it will age a lot better than the singles you've heard. A lot of the deep cuts stay fresh because of their structures while the hits feel more and more repetitive over time, and a few singles were phased out of live shows by fan request so songs like M.I.A. could be added. It will grow on you, especially with the meaning explained.
I think you guys should check out the song I Won't See You Tonight Part 1 next. It's a really meaningful track with piano from their 2nd album Waking the Fallen. Something profound and impactful like this. Keep up the good work!

I'm glad someone else really listened to the song. Im sure many have but I've never seen someone explain it so accurately. I mean its mostly a matter of opinion but you know what I mean.
@@lonestoner8297 A lot of songs can be very interpretive, but sometimes artists really set out to make a direct point. Members of the band were worried that their friends deployed to Iraq would lose a part of who they are and carry trauma for the rest of their lives. They wanted listeners to recognize the hurt US troops feel when they take innocent lives. Not everyone watches interviews or reads the ins and outs of a song, but this song's lyrics are so raw without much interpretation. Anyone who listens for the sound may miss that.
I loved this song back in high school solely for the music and instrumentation. Now I'm 30ish and love it for a totally different reason.

if you guys are wondering what the "x" in a7x means, Avenged Sevenfold got their name from the book of Genesis, in the Bible , about the brothers Cain and Abel "But the Lord said to him, therefore whoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." So the "7x" means it happened seven times or sevenfold
While Genesis 4:15 that you quoted is correct, in Genesis 4:24, the descendant of Cain called Lamech is described as also cursed where the expression avenged sevenfold is written verbatum in the King James version "If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold."
Always found that interesting, especially after the stage album.

This song is one of the songs portraying a soldier’s perspective in Iraq while everyone was protesting against the war and that he feels like he was only doing what he was told and was confused why everyone hates him and the people he served with protecting where he’s from
The song is about soldier that came back home, but his soul is lost in the war.

Like your honest opinion. Appreciate the music for what it is. I dont love the entire song myself buuut like you guys all agreed on the climax of the song, pretty much the second half lol, is where the song takes off. I've heard it pleeeenty of times. That entire album is pretty dope.
