  • In this vlog we are at Nasesara Village, the neighbouring village of Navuti. Here at Nasesara Village there is a woman that has a custard pie business and she sells pie to the Island of Moturiki.
She bakes everyday and we follow her on her recipe for the custard pie and how she bakes it. Her Pies are very popular on the island and she gets orders almost everyday especially during the festive season.

Andara & Happy New Year Uraia & Clan! Your videos have been priceless to me - Living in the “city” of Birmingham England these last few years, but especially last couple months (and Christmas time) has been full of city craziness... these videos bring home the real humanity. Why is there need in this modern world for all this energy spent on craziness? Lets just just breathe the clean air, view the golden sun in sky & eat custard pie! Although I have yet to try the Malay / Rose / Water Apple...

A classic, the perfect pastry to go along with tea or some other hot beverage. Even the custard mixed with condensed milk is divine and topped with crushed peanuts is something my grandmother would make when baking custard pie. 😋
Anyways pie is usually cheap as usual in the villages compared to places like Suva and Nausori, and speaking of the village one cannot escape the "brown label" as in your case Uraia. 🤣

I thought she cracked eggs in mug to make sure no shell entered mixture. The easiest way to check if eggs are ok is to submerge them in water. If they sink they are good, if they float they are bad. This way she could check all eggs at once. ( Of course she will need more than a mug. 1 large bowl will do the trick). Happy new year.

Bula Ura, totoka vakaoti na pie. Loved the island/village life. Isa, way back in 1988, when I was attending Delana Methodist High School, during school break. I went and spent Christmas and New Year in Niubasaga Village with the late Momo Nasarawa and families (Ratus). Best and unforgettable time of my life ♥️ Went out fishing, qoli, picnic at Nasautabu Island, grog at night, also spend a week in Caqelai Island with Nei Di Litia and the crew. Really enjoyed it. Anyway, born and bred lad here from Levuka Vaka-Viti, knows the in and out of village life haha 😊 Moved to the UK 🇬🇧 in 2001. Qai loloma yani vei nomu Na (Merelita) next time you speak to here. I like this video. The pie just seems delicious, with the traditional Fijian style of making in oven.
The pie crust is also soft and tasty.
Thank you Ura for bringing this live.

If the dough is hard the pastry feels like biscuits? No worries triffle it ga. When pastry like biscuits cut them in slices put in a dish layering it. One layer the pastry baked one like biscuits mix cream butter sugar well layer it top of biscuit layer. Next custard and add fruits like pineapples water melons pawpaws and dessicated coconuts shred it. You have all those fruits in the villages there. Next another layer of pastry biscuits repeat the layers.
If you got an icekey or huge pot fill it with cool water. Put your tifle dish inside in the middle that is if you got no refrigerator or ice cubes. It makes the trifle dessert settle firmy and good to enjoy.

I do it here in US . Pineapple, Milk, lemon and coconut custard pie. I do it to eat not to sell. I don't like how crust is done here to make apple pie, pumpkin pie, etc..its horrible 😫. Naba one ga is Fijis custard pie.
