Fun fact (and a gut-punch to WT being "realistic") Realistically, positioning the bombs in that bomb bay behind the pilot's back presented two issues: 1) Dive bombing was absolutely impossible because there was a significant risk of malfunctions of bomb release mechanism. And due to Yak's cockpits being already cramped like hell, no bomb sight was ever installed. So yeah, the pilots had to drop their payloads practically blindfolded. Who would've guessed that, paired with relatively small explosive mass of compatible bombs, Yak-9Bs wouldn't have great ground kill counts? 2) Having a ~400kg ballast tossed right behind the CoM of the aircraft made it unstable. Like reeeeally unstable, almost I-16 levels of uncontrollability (and the "Donkey" was a deceptively nimble bastard in good hands - thanks to that "edge") which changed significantly upon releasing the bombs, because the Soviets' partial solution to the problem (iirc, at least) was readjusting the wings to make the plane less susceptible to stalling, which posed huge issues upon disengaging from the bombing run (btw another reason nobody practised dive-bombin with Yak's - chances were you wouldn't be able to pull up in time after the drop), since the quite noticeable instant weight reduction and consequent maneuverability loss due to - once again - CoM being really sensitive in such light airframes, made piloting it a real challenge, not to mention fending off any fighters that were sent after you when you are much more vulnerable. All in all, the plane was a fun experiment and pretty much the first mass-produced Soviet fighter-bomber. Iirc they replaced the bomb bay with a fuel tank sometime after introducing it in the first place, which solved the flaw native to all Yak's - terrible effective range; but that's another story of actually clever solutions to actually important problems (History rant over. Love your vids as always)
The cool thing about Yaks is that if you carry minimal fuel and enemy sets your fuel tank on fire, the tank will actually drain all the fuel faster (thus stop the fire) before the fire breaks your wing. You will have only the half of fuel then. Once happened to me that they lit both of the fuel tanks, i survived but then i was left only with 8 seconds of fuel, so not enough to make it back to base.

This was a bunch of under 10 year old kids, too It was remarkable. It was legendary. It also took 12 buckets of water to flush that thing down. But it will go down in camp history I think
The Yak 9B was basically designed to level bomb using PTABs. Which are heat bombs. They are low weight and are dropped in the dozen's over enemy tank formations. Since you have so many small bomblets accuracy isn't really an issue. You cant really wingmount them, you need a bomb bay which is why the yak 9B has one. Gaijin will probably never add ptabs because they would siginificantly fuck up the balance since nobody else has similar weapons.
I recently played a lot of GRB 5.0 Germany, using the FW-190s for ground striking to then boom and zoom hostile air. These Yak-9Bs outperform any FW-190 I used in any situation, even out climb me while ascending after a max speed bomb drop all while being at a much lower BR.

The plane can be strong in Ground RB because it carries bombs and is decently nimble and enemy planes are bombers or attackers? Yes. The plane itself is overpowered? No, not even close, Yak 1b is much better as a fighter and is also 3.0, and IL2 is better in the ground attack role and can defend itself pretty well, while also being 3.0

Ooh, for good CAS aircraft: Try the israeli Spitfire Mk IXc. It gets 16 HEAT rockets that have no spread, meaning you can aim for ammo racks and the like.
U said it can't actually flyin without wings, but with half wings it can.. i recorded a landing in a yak where the wings got ripped just after the landing gear..
Nice seeing this plane. Criminally underused, wondered if anyone even remembered it was there. I had tried it and liked it, though I think I quit using it for something like the P-36-A5 due to 50 cals and what is it 3 500s? Hard to just not use a premium plane. I am not a good shot either.
