As a kid growing up in Jamaica John Barnes was everything to me, I cheered for Watford because of him and then for Liverpool because of him, He is the reason why I am a Liverpool fan today. The 1rst time I saw him score a goal from a conner kick I was in total disbelief.
John Barnes is a legendary footballer. Yet, he's often overlooked in the conversation of great Liverpool and English players. His dribbling skills were remarkable, and he had a rocket of a shot in his left foot. I used to look forward to watching the few televised games of English football we used to get in Jamaica, in the early 90s, just to see Barnes play.
When Barnesy was playing at Liverpool, Malaysians like me would have to wait every Tuesday to watch the premier league highlights on TV. Loved him as a player always...Legend!
John Barnes isn't classed as a great Liverpool player because he's a massive part of the Liverpool family still. Just like Kenny, Rushie, Aldo and many others.
He played like Maradona. He glided across the pitch while defenders would slide past him in the background. When he got older and carried more weight he moved into midfield and was brilliant there too. He's in the top 5 players of LFC for me.
I always remember this saying after watching John Barnes documentary few years ago. The reason Barnes didn't really fair fill his potential in a England shirt was there was not many English players like John Barnes doing his era. It would be interesting to see how modern day peak John Barnes would be in today's game.
Barnes was such a unique talent, and it’s true that his style was quite different from many of his contemporaries. He could have really influenced the way wingers play in the modern era!
Barnes was amazing indeed, but I have wondered how even more incredible he would have been today. Unlike some other stars of his era, he had a skill set that would be ideal for the modern game. I think playing under someone like Guardiola, on today’s pitches, he would have been (even more of) a world beater.
The goal against Everton in the 4 all @ Goodison in the FA Cup, was text book Barnes took it on to his right before bending it in to the top bin. What a player
He was 1 of my football hero's as a kid, lucky to see the gladiator play live, magic man, could of played in any club or country on earth, stunning gentleman on and off his stage ❤️🦸❤️🫡❤️❤️❤️
Class player and one of my childhood heroes. Saw him score for Watford against Liverpool in the FA Cup in '86 before he signed for us. Should also credit how he adapted to injury and moved to central midfield, so good on the ball and also played a key role in the 'Collymore closing in goal' in the 4-3 game of the century.
Excellent video and narration. Like & sub for sure. So many moments. The one comes to mind immediately is the goal v QPR where he wins the ball on the half way line. The rest is pure class, balance, agility and grace. What a goal
Thanks for the support! It’s awesome that you appreciate the club’s rich history. Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan are absolute legends-I'll definitely be covering them soon!
@@itsballernoir and Kevin Keagan cause it seems like he was on the same level as Platini or modern day Bellingham winning Balon D'or once again all the best have subscribed ill be sure to watch
Great suggestion! Steve McManaman is definitely a player worth diving into. I’ll add him to the list for future videos-his story is fascinating. Stay tuned, and thanks for the idea!
I sadly remember the racist abuse heaped on Barnes'ie and all black players at that time. It truly was a feck'n disgraceful affair. It always seemed that dear, dear Johnny bore more of the racist abuse because he was the star of a team that always beat everyone else. So he was at the forefront for it all but took the abuse like more of a man than I believe I ever could be. I remember an F.A tie against Man City and the whole of 1 wing at Main Rd was so covered in bananas that the stewards had to come on and clean the pitch before play could restart again, then a season or 2 later the fans of all clubs had got into the habit of bringing inflatable toys of all shapes and sizes to the games, the type of thing that you might have taken to the beach. All nice clean fun until Liverpool come to town and suddenly they were all caring giant blow up bananas absolutely thousands of them. John Barnes was a fantastic player and we all loved him for that and it hurt us to see him abused the way he was. You see Barnes was more than simply another great player he was a truly decent man and apart from him backheeling that banana so famously he never ever showed the slightest concern about his situation or the vile abuse. He was the embodiment of English stoicism. We loved him as Liverpool fans and even the rumour that Barnes'ie was the only Tory or Conservative voter in the team and maybe the City couldn't change our mind because he had stolen all our souls with his performances. He deserved much better from England but then he is in good company there with his fellow Liverpool players never recognised by England managers.
Barnes & Beardsley in 87/88 were brilliant to watch. That season Liverpool easily won the league, losing their first match in March ! About 27-28 games into the season. They only lost 2 league matches. Reached the Cup Final and should have done the double. The following season they missed the double again having beaten Everton in the Cup Final, they lost 0-2 to Arsenal in their final league match with the last kick of the game, and lost the league on GD
Great video. Combining who he was with his legendary footballing status. Look up his lines from the song 'World in motion' by New Order. His rap part had some good footballing advice. ;-)
Great suggestion! Viv Anderson is an absolute legend and has such an important story. I’ll definitely consider covering him in a future video-thanks for the idea!
It's wrong to claim Barnes wasn't embraced by England fans because he was black. He wasn't embraced by them because he rarely ever delivered for the national side the way he did for Liverpool. Look how Gazza carried England to another level at the 1990 World Cup. Barnes was expected to deliver like that, but he never did.
Why does everyone want to go on about "society"? Barnsie was one of the best left-wingers the game has ever seen. What the virtue signalling banner wavers see as good deeds actually has a very negative divisive impact on society. I mean, seriously, what in world does punk rock have to do with being a great winger? Please keep our sport free of dirty political propaganda.

He was phenomenal. Him and Beardsley were terrifying for any defense

@@VinoVeritas_ He is though
Still my favourite Liverpool player to this day. He was outstanding.
John Barnes free-kick goal against Arsenal in November 1989 was one the best IMO
He played like Maradona. He glided across the pitch while defenders would slide past him in the background. When he got older and carried more weight he moved into midfield and was brilliant there too. He's in the top 5 players of LFC for me.
He was a sensation.. one of the best players I have ever seen
Absolutely phenomenal player and without a shadow of doubt he would have excelled in the game now as well.
I loved him as a Liverpool player but I love his passionate, intelligent speaking even more. He's an inspiration for everyone.

One of the feared Wingers in English football. Woow Awesome, and ahead of his time 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
