  • It's rated by many Reds as the best ever season for sheer quality of football. In 1987-88, Kenny Dalglish’s side won the First Division title with a string of breathtaking performances, led by the brilliance of John Barnes and Peter Beardsley.
The Reds amassed 90 points, scored 87 goals and lifted the championship trophy with four games to spare.
In nine league matches they scored four times, twice they hit five and the Reds only failed to score in four First Division games that season.
Here, in a series of clips from videos and news bulletins from that season, are some of the highlights.
And if you enjoy this, check out our series of What We Call History podcasts discussing the season game by game with Reds who went home and away.

This was a fantastic football team. A massive shame that English teams were banned from playing in Europe, as I feel Liverpool would have possibly added to their tally of European Cup trophies, and they would have also have had the chance to test themselves against the great AC Milan team of that time

Barnes , Aldridge & Beardsley.. What a front 3 that was ... Absolutely deadly.. Always pains me that we couldn't test ourselves against Europe's elite but...

These were some of the best days of my life :)
I had become a Liverpool fan in 1986 after watching Rush and Kenny win the double.
    But 1987-88 was just breathtaking.
Dare I say that Klopp has brought back a little bit of that in the last 2 years.
    Up the REDS !!

John Barnes was simply unplayable that season. What a season he had. Beardo, Aldo, Stevie Nicol, Steve McMahon and Ray Houghton were different class. One of the most exciting teams ever built.

My favourite Liverpool team ever.I was 13 going on 14 that season, just starting the best years of my life.Being a southern red, tickets were hard to come by but the old man came up trumps and got tickets for the Charlton game early in 88'(selhurst was sold out and noisy as fuck)Steve McMahon and Digger were giants that day.Few teams could touch us that season and we went unbeaten until spring of 88' when Everton(current champions) ended our run with a narrow win at Goodison.Forest were our nearest rivals that season and beat us at the city ground the week before we beat them in the FA cup semi and then absolutely
TONKED them at Anfield 5-0 in the league return at Anfield just days later..Still fills me with rage thinking about the defeat to those fucking cloggers in the FA cup final of that year, Beardsley scored a perfectly good goal after 5 mins only to have it ruled out.Shame really,as I thought that the 87-88 side was perhaps more deserving of a league/FA cup double than the 85-86 side.

Aldridge was indispensable to this front three combination working so well. People say Rush offered more because of the defensive work he did in the opposition 's half , but Aldridge's departure inexplicably coincided with Beardsley's dip in form and him constantly being left out of the starting 11.

Probably going to be controversial to say this, but bringing Rush back from Turin & ousting Aldo was probably the turning point for this team and Kenny let sentiment cloud his judgement a little bit.
That triple threat of Beardsley, Barnes, Aldridge, but including Houghton & McMahon, you had one of the most fearsome forward lines & a midfielder who would flatten anything in their way.
That was a side who never got their chance to challenge Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard and the rest of Arrigo Sacchi's superb Milan dynasty. UEFA cut their nose off to spite their faces and made European competition the poorer for it.
BTW, yes I'm a Mag but my Geordie father has been a Liverpool fan since the days of their white shorts and when Paisley's career the club was on the pitch, not in the dugout.
I grew up knowing nothing but Liverpool's relentless dominance of the league (apart from 78 & 81).
Needed a good Toffees side to give them a challenge too....

Liverpool played a warm up game against the Irish Olympic X1 at Lansdowne Road in Dublin in August of 1987. I was 9 at the time and my da brought me. There was a huge air of anticipation, Kenny had reshaped the team after coming up short in the league. Liverpool won 5-1 on the day or something. The result wasn’t really important. Peter Beardsley was magnificent. Steve Nicol was playing left back and was bombing up for the first 15 minutes giving Beardsley stick for hanging on to the ball, you could see Ronnie Moran frantically gesticulating on the other side too. Beardsley was getting stick from everyone, but then the whole ground slipped into a trance watching him. He could bend time. I think he scored two and set up another. The match was abandoned with ten minutes to go when Kenny stripped off to come on. Literally thousands of kids jumped the stanchions and charged in this big mob towards him. Up the Reds.

msec Ses Liverpool lost the league in 1978 and 1981 but still won European Cups. Liverpool of late 80s could’ve won or at least compete for the title imo (if we weren’t banned obviously). Still think that tragedy in Hillsborough could’ve affected us tho... However this particular Liverpool side of 87/88 played the most exciting and beautiful Football in English history and you can’t deny it. P.S. AC Milan only won the league title once under Sacchi during his 1987-1991 tenure. Some quality sides in Italy there were back in a day...
