That hull looked remarkably good
Yeah this was in good shape 😊👌👍
Paint and bottomcoat did it's job I suppose.
I just knew we were going to see some barnacles being blown to smithereens based on your intro video 😢 Alas, it was not to be. It was another finely executed job showing your skill and expertise.
We remain faithful in believing our wish will manifest in the none to distant future.
😊👌👍
That was very therapeutic watching you strip back that hull. 😁
😊👌👍 glad you enjoyed it
Very satisfying and therapeutic to watch. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it 😊👌👍
That was a big job for one guy. You made it look easy.
😏😊👍👌
Man, it's crazy how perfect it left it. Great work.

Super jeszcze wypiaskowany Pozdrawiam serdecznie. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Strangely satisfying to watch.
😊👍👌
Very satisfying to do, I was a sandblaster for 6 years in my 20 ‘s. NZ lytleton dry dock.
Awesome! I could use a sandblaster in my kids room.
😂
Hey brother ,cool video , great work ,I also blast and am a fabricator /welder from Alberta Canada 🇨🇦 👍🏻 keep Crushing bro, God Bless 🙏🏻
😊👌👍
Amazing job, I would be interested on seeing more of this refurbish!
😊👍
Always love the end of the boat videos for the ''While you're here, can you just...'' bits to appear!
Only seems to happen on boat videos though! lol
It happens on nearly every job I will start and film more of em 😂😬 can you just...
That's mint, lovely job.
Thanks 😊
Who wanted to see more of the underside being blasted 👍
I have videos of the base plate been blasted 👍
The most efficient use of blast media and effective profile creation is with an orbital motion at the nozzle.
Just saying.
Not enough room for the camera and him to work.
Great video nice job👍🙂
😊👍
Very nice job, amazing you got that done in one day!
Yeah it was close to using all the media I tuck like so close I was on my last pot 😂
Great job looks like a new boat ❤
Thank you 😊
You made it look easy...again great job
😊👌👍
You should do a video about the machine you used. Thanks. And nice job by the way
😊👌👍
Beautiful 👍🏾
😊👌👍
Nice job and wish ya good luck....... from North Carolina USA.
Thank you 😊 welcome to the blast hood 🙂
Looks like they timed the blast and repaint to perfection; before the (epoxy) paint breakdown and loss of steel. Lot of berthed time for those young barnacles but a big resulting slip.Great job.
It came up real nice 👌
I work in Newport News Shipbuilding and yup, you're correct. Better to blast and spray BEFORE the paint coating breaks down.
New safety working well 😁
😬😆
Great job!!!!!
Thank you 😊
Love the video. If I've told my students once, a thousand times;edges 1st.
Wish I could use this on the boats I see.
Neat to watch.
Lee
Thank you 😊 I will be honest I always seam to do the edges 1st and don't have a real answer as to why just feels like the right thing to do 😬
Nice job you made it look easy
😊👍👌
bc it is easy lol
Look forward to seen your videos 😏
Done a good job 👏👏 would like to see it finished in paint 👍
Thankyou 😊🫡👍 unfortunately I'm never about when it comes to paint I perfer to stay clear of the putting it back on stages haha
Crickey mate that was so good to watch 👍👌🇭🇲🇬🇧
😊👌👍
nice job Mick, looks like that new compressor is really working good for ya.
Thank you 😊 yeah I'm more and more happy with the purchase as every job gets done just need about 5 years worth of work now to pay for it 😂
Дорогу осилит идущий✊
Did you use a more aggressive media on this one, as I notice the grey floor and less dust like there normally is with the recycle glass. Perfect finish for paint , great job Mick. Oh and where do the wheels fit on the barge🤣
That came up very well, a big old boat compared to a normal canal boat.
Yeah I did wonder if I could complete when I sported the size 😆
very nice
Thank you 😊
Really nice video, at least not as bad as the boat with the filler 👍
Ya know when ya pull up as I don't have any info just that its a boat when I pulled up and spotted the size of it I was wishing the boat to blast was parked somewhere els haha turned out OK in the end glad it wasn't full of filler 🙏😆
By the way, that barge has a nice attractive looking hull. It has nice lines and shape to it. It looks like a proper vessel.
I thought it looked too big when I turned up 😂 surly that will struggle to fit down the UK canal system?
@@Mobileblaster it’s probably to wide and deep to fit down and through some of it where the canals and locks are only 7 feet wide.
good job
Thank you 😊
There’s nothing better than watching a master artist practice their craft.
😊👍👌
Perfect job for someone with OCD lol but he is doing a beautiful job of it.
😬😊👌👍
Top job, looks the dogs bollocks 👍🙏
It did come up nice this 1 😊
Here is NACE Level 3 inspector notes :
1) Scrape all Barnacles and loose growth off the hull first
2) Pressure wash the hull fresh potable water @ 3000 PSI
3) Now you are ready to blast, Remember prior to coating application to test steel hull with a CSN test kit or a the least use a Kittagwa tube. For Soluble Salts.
Should be no more than 3 PPM soluble salts. The CSN tests for chlorides,Sulfates,Nitrates.
Blasting all the marine Growth and unwashed hull contaminates into the steel is not recommended as it imbeds in the steel and painting over it is a major cause of coating failure.
Any coating Data sheet should outline this ,and prior to work commencing should be reviewed with coating applicators.
My job sheet says prepare the serface to SA2 I always try for SA2.5 or better then the rest is upto the painters 👍
You make it look so easy! What CFM compressor do you run and how many PSI? That blast pattern looks fairly large
425 cfm @ 125psi :)
@@Mobileblasterbrilliant I need one 👍
This is a nice little set up. When larger vessels are done with multiple blasters we'll use double or triple the air volume at similar pressures. Sandblasting is the fun part. Painting sucks until its all done and looks pretty lol
Hey mick a good run of work there ,I used to blast and paint on the gas holders ,there was 2 of us would spend a couple of hours under the hood and then a quick clean up and prime paint , the good thing about blasting is no other prep work before paint and it looked good as well
Well done.!! Surprisingly little dust is created when you are biasting. Is it because of the blasting material?
More likely that I'm the 1 paying for the media so I try to only use what I need 😬👍👌
What becomes of the blast media you use on the job? Is it one and done, or is the media recovered, cleaned and reused? Or can it be used for other tasks? That looks like a fair amount of left over stuff to just send to a land fill with no other applicable use.
Once and done for me it's oready a waste product finding another use it comes from the ground they processes it get what they want from it then bag this for us to purchase
R'reet Mick, Big buggers them Dutch barges eh! Are they restricted as to where they can go on the canals & rivers?
How long have they got to treat/paint it before it starts to flash rust again.
Great job as always mate.
I'm not sure about the canal systems I think they can go almost everywhere the narrow 1s do but I'm unsure to be fair. Depending on the humidity it could last weeks like that even months but my advice is get atlases some primer over it as soon as possible usually the next day 👍 some days if I can get done in a reasonable time frame the lads stop over to get a coat onit the same day but I think this was painted the following day
If it was small and easy, they would di it themselves. My grandad came out of Barnsley and complained about everything. I'm from Australia.
😂👌👍 I have friends in Wauchope 😊
very interesting video. im a spraypainter but ive never sand blasted before. Is it difficult to hold the hose with all that pressure?? im going to be at a job that does blasting and painting. any advice you can give is appreiated
Its not as simple as these videos make out 👍
Is that a torch blaster or sandblaster? It was fun watching the video.
Sandblaster 👌👍
Thanks
Thank you I appreciate that 😊👌👍
Hello my friend. What kind of sand-blasting medium did you use? Another question, is it possible or cost-effective to collect or save the sand again? I think is not possible like when you work in a workshop.
Crushed glass or iron silicate I believe this was iron silicate. It would be possible but eat up a lot of time my idea was im hear to blast so I try and do as much blasting as possible and collecting media would make the job a lot longer
Do you return and blast the areas obscured by the blocking holding the barge in place?
No it's not so bad of area to hit with a sander if they wanted it doing 😊
The steel hull of my 35ft ex RN harbour launch was sand/gritblasted 10 years ago. The dust was incredible. What system is this?
Probably the same system but an operator that's paying for the media not a worker that's not interested in optimization 😂👍 some people think more media is faster I believe letting the air do the work 😎👌 the is a sweet spot too lean and your diesel bill will be on the high side or too rich and your media will be eaten up too quick
I'm surprised you didn't prep i.e. cover the windows. You weren't afraid of hitting the glass? What did you use as your blast media? Sand, glass? Thanks, I blast log homes mostly.
I don't prep the windows I'm confident I won't hit them. Media was crushed glass
@@Mobileblaster Cool, thanks for the reply. Looks great by the way.
@@TheAstraeuss turned out nice 😊👌👍
Great job done again mick 👍👍👍
Thank you 😊 👍👌
Nice to hear the voice of someone from 'home'... I'm curious, have you considered using a laser? Or is it too expensive?
😊👌👍 yeah I've looked into these and the costs involved plus the cut rate is super slow the technology isn't quite ready to rival a sandblaster even if it did do a similar job to a blaster the energy needed wouldn't make it feesable just yet. I believe it will be the future but not for a good time yet 👍
A laser doesn't provide a profile for your paint to grip to media blasting makes a rough surface for paint to get maximum adhesion to the steel
Lovely example of a Dutch barge cargo conversion (replica). Did any of the barnacles hit your mask?
Haha they messed it up and ruined the pov shots I had so I tried a little faster but longer time-lapse what you think good speed?
@@Mobileblaster Speeded up, the job looks quick and easy. A good mix showing how long each section takes and then an overall sped up version is perfect
@DEmma1972 😊 it was hard on this 1 because I forgot my battery bank and the gopro batteries don't last very long I nearly filmed it all 😂 just a shame the pov I did get the lense got covered 🫣
I thought the UK had banned sand for blasting. I love your setup. I hope that is supplied air you are using.
Yeah its been banned since the 60s I only use approved medias the media I used hear was iron silicate (silica free) yeah I filled air from the compressor its grade D air poor air but better than neet air from a Compressor as thats not breathable
Question : why would sand blasting be banned ?? I know they have crazy laws and rules like paying for watching TV, anti-guns, heavily taxed, arrested for posting on the net, ect. but sand blasting ?? thanks be well.
@MegaBait1616 yeah to use as a media as its got free sillica (sillica sand/kiln dry sand) tests was done and they found its a lead course for silicosis its best just to use approved media's that way they can tax us properly on the media instead of sweeping up some grit off the ground and siving the dirt and using free media 😂
Oddly satisfying ! So that was a canal boat?
😊👍👌 yeah apparently so seems more like a ship to me haha
Just outta curiosity what happens to all that stuff you blasted off that ended up in the floor? Are you responsible for sweeping it up or do they do it once they are finished repainting it?
I have a contract with the boat yard they take care of the clean up 👍
Everybody can see that the paint can easily flush away, and disappear in the nature. It’s a little sad.
@@willem3690 it's a little sad to even think that's what happens I have a deal with the boat yard I blast they clean up
Good day, would it be possible to see some Before/After shots you pointed out during your initial walk through?
Something I will make note of on future videos 👌👍thankyou
You don't know much that will be appreciated.
We know it's gone but I for one would like to see a little before and after if your video time permits.
Do you ever need to prewash anything? typically any grease or oil substances would be solvent cleaned prior to blasting to avoid embedding the oil into the steal causing adhesion issues later on.
It would help but not essential as the blaster will remove most to all of anything on the serface
Well done. What abrasive did you use?
Iron silicate 👌👍
Hey Mick quick question don't never had that feeling when see a or started a job that looks fun to or easy do doing and while during the job you immediately regrets to taken that job on and you can't backing out the job anymore of it ? 😂
Loads of jobs when I 1st started out but since making them mistakes I don't fall for them again 😆 I've been at this game for some years and taken on alsorts of jobs looking back knowing what I know now some I should have walked well away from haha
@@Mobileblaster yes i know but if you don't make the mistakes you never learn anything about it plus this the way to become a pro in something if you don't take risks or willing to trying something you won't achieve things in life avoid mistakes that you can don't make them purpose 😆
Boa noite Mick , qual abraaivo você usa ... vejo q nao faz pó. parabéns pelos vídeos 👍
Iron silicate on this job. Thank you 😊
It was around 18x 25kgs bags so 450/500kgs if memory serves could have been less. I really like crushed glass it's cheap and fast cut. Iron silicate is 2nd choice only reason been its slightly faster cut and a deeper profile but in my opinion not worth dubble the money per bag only on really the odd jobs or if I have some left over and Im trying to keep stock fresh 👍
poxa tem um rendimento muito bom mesmo, quero agradecer sua atenção e vou continuar acompanhando seu trabalho, um abração meu amigo Mick ... sucesso e fique com Deus 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Mick i just wondered how come it does not start going to start rusting before you get any primer on the metal...
Depending on the humidity and if you can keep the steel dry it will last days even weeks before flash rusting appears I've had an old lambretta frame sitting in the unit for almost a year and it was still fine obviously the type of metal plays a part in this as cast iron flash rusts near instantly after blasting with very little humidity. But rolled steel seams to have a good resistance to flash rusting
اعمل بهاذا المجال منذ ثلاثون عام
👌👍
How much time do you have to apply primer before rust starts showing up?
If its kept dry week months even years but it would need to stay dry and in a climate controlled area for humidity its best to coat it straight away or as soon as possible for best results 👌👍
Nice work Mick ,you never mentioned how long it took buddy
It was done in the shift well just under 8 hour 👍
Bang tidy 🎉 why the wheels 😅
@@chriseccles1454 😂 we have to keep roiling somehow haha just a tiny can you just.... haha
Out of curiosity, is this kind of work taxing on the hands/body? My husband just started this line of work with no experience and said his hands felt horrible after the 8hr shift of doing this.
I'm curious about the rudder, very different to a normal canal boat , doesn't look very hydrodynamic. Is there a reason for it's form?
I don't have a clue 😂
Hello Mick!Haw difficult learn sandblasting and haw much need money for start Thanks
Well alot of verbals at play with that question depends on what line of work you want to learn this will determine how much you need to spend if your going to buy new or 2nd hand etc

I'm never about when they paint them unfortunately
is there much difference between the power plus nozzle and standard nozzle? I've got 400 cfm
thanks 👍
Yes definitely worth the investment and I like to see a different when I spend money but you will find it hard to find the 950 needed for 400cfm I've got the 850 and the next hit is 1050 ya need 500cfm I believe for that. Don't fall for the sales pitch of they add power that's bolx but they do add reach well they keep the cone tighter for longer so it will feel more power as the overspray is reduced and the hotspot is hotter 👌👍 they add about ft extra reach compared to a standard nosel
@@Mobileblaster thanks Brother i think I'll go for it.
keep up the good work 💪
@tonymccaffrey9025 I pick the XL over every other nosel I've got Hopefully you will like it as much as me 😊👍

Glass? I wasn't near any 👌👍
So is it yourself or the customer who gets landed with cleaning up the site afterwards?
Neither 😂 the Dock owner dose the clean up 😎 we have a nice agreement 🤝
Where is all that sand going...and can it be recovered or is it too fine?
It gets disposed of at the end of the process. It could be reused but I choose not to just to keep good speed 👌
@mick blackley is there anyway I can join you for a 1 day experience? I've always wanted to do this, I'm from London
Unfortunately it would be a nightmare for my accountant as I would have to put you on my books to make sure your insured etc and I will be honest you won't pickup enough info up in just 1 day these videos do make it look easy so please take what you will from them but alot is going off that's not shown 👍
It seems like you forgot to use a high pressure washer before sandblasting...
A big no no..and especially if it has sailed in salt water....
Otherwise: Nice work and boat 🙂
Whys it a no no? I'm shooting clean media not reusing the media that's the only reason I can see it been a problem 🤔
@@Mobileblaster
I know many people thinks that... so:
Because you are shooting salt and other substances (grease) into the steel and especially when using grit. Worked many years as a certified blaster/ painter on oil rigs and on land, and the way to find out the right conditions within spec, is to measure: Purity, steel roughness and humidity by taking samples.
(Moisture meter, purity fluid test etc
Including condense in the blaster, air, temperature. This is on a microscopic level, but still critical. You should also try to keep a greater blasting distance when possible for best results. Purity and economically..
(Excuse my English)
@vinegum8835 distance will be determined by the cfm and psi and the nosel if I pull back anymore the hotspot would be weeker so in turn slower progress. When blasting with clean media so long as the steel is clean it's way more than the paint manufacturer recommends. Blasting will remove all contamination (old paints salts filler canal silt algi etc etc) steel profiling or moisture screening isn't applicable even the paint manufacturer doesn't spec a mesh grade. All it says is to remove flacky lose paints and key the serface. And they put a 4 year warranty on the product if they are so confident in their serface preparation instructions I'm sure going well over board by removing all the old pint and in turn getting a mesh grade profile perfect for most to all paint based coatings will be expectable 👌 off shore blasting is a different kind of blasting I know this as I've blasted the control bases for wind turbines before and the specs needed was on another level 😏
A warranty means nothing if you have a greasy underlay, humidity in the hose or air.
Offshore or inland makes no difference.and frankly, I'm surprised that you'r even questioning these facts.
Anyway, it's not critique, just suggestions so just keep doing what you do, it will not corrode immediately, but you would never pass a job without washing first here in Norway... 🙂
All the best and thank's for sharing!
@vinegum8835 it really makes no difference whatsoever if its been washed off beforehand or if the blast pipe has moisture init well if the steel is brilliant bright white then that's should tell any blaster that it's acceptable also leaving millscale is acceptable. If you had moisture in the lines you wouldn't be able to get a clean finish it would oxidise and leave the job tea stain colour same if salts was still present. Washing the job off before would only make any difference if the splash was fired directly on to another area that's been blasted and wasn't rectified but I wouldn't get paid if I left such areas. And take steps to blast at an angle to push the crap away.
If a paint manufacturer is offering a 4 year warranty with vague preparation instructions then that tells me going over the top will indeed be good enough
What type of media are you using?
I cannot remember off the top of my head it would have been eva crushed glass or iron silicate 👍
Maybe you can help duo vagari with their rusty barge with history dating back to 1910
I just watched their progress they really need a Sandblaster for sure 👌😊
what power do you use
Compressed air 425cfm at 125psi 👍

Thorne Doncaster 👍 please send business enquiries to info@mobileblasting.co.uk
How long did that take you to complete 😢
It was done within the day 👍
What for grit are you Using
Iron silicate fine 👍
how long can you leave it before you have to stick a sealing cover (like chromate primer ) over it
That would depend on how dry you can keep it also the humidity levels I've had a boat half blasted for weeks out side in the rain and it only needed patch blasting to bing it back
thanks Mick - so very much local environment - I thought there might have been an issue with it flashing as you might get with mild steel (untreated)- thanks@@Mobileblaster
@yachticus yeah any mild steel will last a decent amount of time if it can be kept dry boats are no different if the get wet they will flash rust but it's not a big problem looks bad but the tea staining really isn't hard to remove can be done with chemicals or even acid primers some say leave to flash rust so they adhere properly
How mutch did the sand cost for this job?
