I’ve had Armitron watches in my collection for years. They are the unsung hero of American watch brands: great designs, solid quality build, and blue collar prices. Great watches so it’s good to see them getting some love from across the pond!
YES. ARMITRON. I genuinely haven't bought a Casio since I discovered there was a company out there still making steel-cased digital watches. They also make a retro ana-digi combo watch that I really enjoy.
I bought a steel Casio with that shape in 1986. With 4 pushers and a 37x42x10.2mm case, 200m water resistance, and a very legible display, it's a great little watch. The size is in my preference zone, too and it's still running.
Great review, as always. I have two Rubiks so here's my 2 cents: Pros: They look good (don't look too close though) and the straps are neat. Price is good as well. Downs: QC is questionable. Also there's no button guards and the buttons really stick out. The snap off case back is also a minus. I got two of these Rubiks and they were both duds, after a month of use, one of them had one button just shoot out of it's socket after being pressed. The other one has the graphics overlay printed askew, can't even look at it, also the buttons squeak. I also have two A1000s and CASIO always have great quality, as you know. CASIO just needs to roll out the A1000 in plain stainless steel, with a black watchface, positive LCD and solid link bracelet (like the Rag and Bone one) and i think that a lot of people would buy that for +/- 200 USD.
01:09 Why did the second hand tick forward and then backward? Low battery indicator? I can't be the only one who caught that. Or did you loop the footage forward and in reverse?
As someone who has 2 bw 640 and a Casio 158 i'm quite happy with them, i do like the idea of personality and as they change with time. I use almost every day a silver 640 and for the past 2+ years i had no problem with it or any other ones from the above, even thought at first all pulled my arm hair.

Just be sure to use a bright color like white, blue, pink, or green. I have done this mod on numerous Casios and it works pretty well. I'm curious to see how it will work on the Armitron as I def want one of these (Too bad the black and gold ones more than Double the price)
I would definitely buy a Rogue for a few more bucks if it had a usable night light. I was literally about to snap one up until you showed that. Seems like Armitron is trending in the right direction, hopefully you can show us more soon!

Before knowing about Armitron I bought a belarusian made Elektronika (ЧН-52) and it also feels like a Casio alternative with better materials and even more personality.
i did some video work for them in the 90s. good people, nyc based operation. they mostly oem watches for fashion designers. they would approach designers back then like anne klein, kenneth cole, etc. and license their name. the watches are designed in house at armitron and approved by the fashion designer. you used to be able to get great deals on the overstock at century 21 in nyc.
So happy to see Armitron. They have quite a selection with many steel-cased options. Their LED Tetra and Griffy are two very unique ones. And the Flashback is another Casio killer, squarely taking on the Casio AQ800E. Great review as always. I love my Casios but I love my underdog Armitrons too. 😁
I have a few Armitron watches and they are really good. They seem to be getting more and more attention from outside their usual markets, which is good. I think they are far better than Timex.
Thanks for the introduction but I still like casio~ (I don't like the gap at the lug to the braclet from the armitron) 01:09 the second hand doesn't want to go?
I bought Armitrons for my boys when they were younger. G-Shock in appearance but not as robust and the straps were crap. Both straps eventually broke. But, they were good for their purpose, and now that the boys are older, G-Shock makes more sense.
I remember Armitron from back in the day and honestly didn't realize that they were still around. Not planning to replace my Casios anytime soon but I'll definitely keep these in mind.
Cool to see an Armitron mention:) I have both the Rubik and Rogue, good additions to my collection despite the dreadful backlight. I also have an Armitron 40/8447 which has a great backlight, big number display and a nice soft rubber strap with 2 keepers rather than the usual 1 with Casios. I probably wear this one more than the other 2.
@Omar Zoya just tried it on a 2 piece canvas strap (only 18mm strap I think I have) and gotta say it looks good. Never considered trying different straps as happy with the metal one. Thanks for post.
Ayy, an Armitron video! Been waiting for someone to make this. They've capitalized with some common sense upgrades over Casio's lazy complacency and I dig it. I have the Ridgemont and I love it TO BITS! It's weirdly reminiscent of a Casio model (even moreso than these) but cheaper and with the same stainless steel upgrade. It shares the engraved/etched caseback, which was a lovely and unexpected surprise when I picked it up last year. The face is a nice dark blue (almost black in some lights) with a vertical brushed pattern. The light on the digital portion (it's ana-digi) is even EL rather than a cheap LED. I threw it on a 20mm jubilee and it's become one of my favorite watches. I've got two nitpicks though. The 12 o'clock marker is slightly crooked, which I can live with. Also, the analog and digital times don't stay synced very long. For the price I paid, I'm still happy, but it's not perfect. I'm tempted to get another as I've banged mine up a bit, so hopefully the 12 o'clock marker is aligned next time!
I don't have any of the cheapest Casio's, but I do have a Casio G-Shock (solar, atomic, titanium back, 200m, etc) which I paid around $100 more than a decade ago and it still looks and works fine. I certainly wouldn't trade it for an Armitron. Guess you could call it "brand fidelity" but to me it's just a rational choice, I'd rather pay a little bit more and get a better quality, longer lasting product.
I have been using an Armitron Griffy, which has illuminating led digits like an old digital alarm clock, as the watch I sleep in. I use it as a micro flashlight to check on my infant twins at night. I replaced the metal bracelet after waking up with some cuts and blood with a soft fabric velcro i-watch strap. They are much much cheaper on Amazon whereas their website prices are almost double
The bracelet on that Rogue is identical to the bracelet on my first watch - a Roamer quartz circa 1989. Pleased to report no trouble with it over many, many years.
armitron is a good brand, i was hitchhiking when i was younger and as i was walking along backwards with my hand out i spotted one laying on the ground, i picked it up checked it the time the date and slapped it on my wrist some guy watched the entire thing and as i stuck my hand back into the traffic he stopped offered me a ride and asked me what i found so i showed it to him and he said they were a good brand then showed me the same watch on his hand. that was maybe 1991?
My grail watch isn't a Rolex or whatever but instead I desire a small digital watch made from real metal and a water resistance that allows you to swim with it worry free. I've been looking at this exact watch for a while now. It was super obscure to me, especially since I'm not in America. I've been looking for reviews before buying. Thanks for finally looking at it.
Good review, Ben. I have both of these models, along with a resin Sport Chrono and a vintage digital from 1979. I cannot understand why Armitron did not put the backlight from the Sport Chrono into the Rubik and the Rogue. The backlight on the Sport Chrono is equal to or better than both Indiglo and ElectroLuminescence, at least in my opinion.
I own two analogue Armitron watches, both purchased at Amazon (at half their retail prices). At these prices, they offer incredible value. They can't compete with Chinese brands (you know, homage brands) for obvious reasons, but they do offer better value than Casio, if you can get them at half the retail price. They use Seiko movements, are all stainless steel, their cases are well finished, the dials have applied indexes, lume, etc. For 40 dollars, you don't get that on a Casio MTP (which I've also owned).
Just that swimming logo and I can smell the chlorine, pickled onion monster munch and Highland toffee bar from my trips to the Swimming Baths on the 80s. 😊
@@TalenGryphon I'm good at soldering, but blah I don't want to have to figure out sourcing parts, buying a soldering iron just for this, making sure that all the parts are compatible and fit, and I've never pulled apart a watch before, etc. It would be a fun project sometime! I hope they release a version with a mesh band and a black coated one with resin as i can't wear link bracelets with my super hairy wrists since they always pop hairs out and annoy me Mesh is my favorite followed by resin. But if it's resin I hope it has more holes for finer adjustment than the casios. But i love how resin watches never get hot when out in the worst of summers. Metal watches get uncomfortably hot.
Great review as ever Ben. Always wonder why you maybe overlook the Casio W-96h when mentioning Casio's. It's got splitlap stopwatch, 2'timezones,reasonable backlight, easily avail in uk, fits small wrists, large numerals. Great jogging watch . How about a review?
I also purchased the Armitron Rubik which is a good watch for the price and agree with what you have said about it. The main concern however for me though is that the Rubik has a Chinese movement so don't know how long it will last over time. Like you I did purchase another Armitron and thst is the analogue/digital Armitron Ridgemont. I think it is has a an awesome stainless steel watch for the money at around £47 on Amazon US and it ahas a Japanese movement in it and is also water resistant to 50M. The bracelet is the same as the Rubik but is 20mm so no problem seeking another strap if you wish to do so. A really good backliight on the digital display though compared with the Casio analogue/digital equivalent which doesn't have this function. The Casio is a lot smaller and slimmer than the Armitron Ridgemont which on the wrist wesrs like a 39mm or 40mm. The bracelet is a better quality than a Casio though and wears very comfortable. The Armitron Ridgemont is a excellent value for money watch imo and I think it should last for many years to come. Great review Ben and thanks for posting.
I bought the Rouge on the back of this video. I love Casio and have a G shock, a158 and a168, all excellent in their own right but the Armitron Rouge takes me back to the days I remember fondly and it’s all stainless steel like the old Casio of the day. I’m in the UK so struggled finding one but worth the search and well chuffed with mine! The function and quality is excellent, wears well on the wrist and definitely looks the part! Wear it all the time. Seems in life we all get to a certain age and we start hankering for the old stuff we remember from old, know and love.
I've had an Armitron LED watch for a while and it just works and does what it says on the tin. No complaints for the price that I paid for it. This is the first time that I've seen an LCD Armitron so I might just take a look. I have an A1000 positive display and don't really have any significant complaints but the price is a lot higher than the watches under review. Many thanks for sharing Ben.
Armitron makes solid, basic watches. Small company based in NYC, with loads of affiliation with the Yankees and other local sports teams. They also make the blank watches for a lot of fashion timepieces (they license designs to fashion brands too). Good budget brand, and they make decent three hand quartz pieces. Better bracelets as well. I'd say it's the closest thing to Lorus or Depth Charge that we have in the US. They also make a bunch of fashion-adjacent skeleton watches with Seagull movements. Glad to see you get your hands on them!
Basically I’d love a 316L stainless steel A168 (WA-1YES) with a screw back, 100m of water resistance and a quality bracelet. Would pay £200 for it. It is the most beautiful Casio model imho. A top notch quality would make it quite desirable. Throw in a sapphire crystal and I’d pay 250.
I'm an American, and just got my first two Armitrons. I'm usually a Timex and Seiko guy, but the quality of Armitron at low prices point may push me to collect these, too! LOL
Is the Rubik's and Rogue's crystals really mineral glass ? Armitron's website shows them both as acrylic resin. Normally if it is glass the bevel on the crystal is normally opaque white, but photos shows it as clear which leads me to believe it is indeed acrylic.
The Armitron is a much nicer object than the Casio. Feels a lot more solid. The second time zone is a handy feature. The readout is superior on the Casio if you are looking from an angle. The steel Armitron case is a thing of beauty though. Not sure i would agree they are better than the steel Casio a1000 though. That is a beautiful watch and a bit bigger than the Armitron, which would be important to those with bigger wrists.
Ben, I’d LOVE for you to try out some of the “Merkur” or “Seizenn” watches from Ali Express. I have the Seizenn dirty dozen WW2 watch and I love it. Great quality for less than $100.
Looks like Timex is finally getting in on the stainless digital scene at least here in Canada. The T80. Waaay too much at $139 CDN for an acrylic crystal, 30m water resistance, hair puller and no countdown timer. The only thing going for it is the caseback has screws not snap down. Get the Armitron , happy with mine for half as much.
One of those reminds me of my first digital watch I got in 6th grade with was an Armitron Seiko clone. One day while rushing out of class I banged it on the metal door frame and broke the crystal. Never fixed it.
If you are looking for new ideas, there is an interesting Kyiv based brand called Kleynod selling Ukrainian made watches with Ronda movements and interesting designs. I was interested in buying a Poljot but in lieu of the current conflict that didn't sit right and that's how I discovered them.
When you get around to reviewing the Armitron analog models, which all claim to have "Japanese quartz movements," could you please take the caseback off and show us which movement(s) they're using? I can't find info on their movements anywhere on the internet. Are they Hattori? TMI? Miyota? Something else? I'd like to know. Thanks! 😃
I hope this will spark a competition and casio will finally create a steel case versions of their affordable watches.
This has been out for years at this point and Casio's answer has been the A1000D model.

I've got my eye on the Armitron Rogue - I love the design and that it's all stainless steel to boot is a strong selling point.
I bought one, but the inside digital part is not aligned properly.
Awesome! Ordered the rogue just now via your link. Cheers!
saw this vid and went straight to amazon I've been waiting for one of these
I have 3 Armitrons 2 are pro sports that are PITAS to set and my dress watch is a Armitron 20/4935TB Men PC33 and 3 Timex, I enjoy the brands.
If only they had improved the night light..... It's a wasted opportunity get the upper hand over a Casio & Timex.
The light kinda kills it for me but then again the extra time zone is great. It’s either the B640 or Rogue for me.
Very unfortunate about the night light.
Throw in a sapphire crystal and I’d pay 250.
that shit cant destroy nothing
Does the armitron rogue have 50m WM? I’m thinking knight g on getting one
The only way casio will bounce from this is to release a smaller duro. I like that Armitron watch,I just might get one. Thanks,Ben!
A smaller Duro would be nice, it's huge!
I’ve been looking forward for a review on these as they keep popping up on Amazon and I’m always been tempted to bagged them both! Great review
They are awesome watches
Thank you for sharing this, great stuff love your channel, best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺
Must review the Armitron Instalite. Love your videos brother, keep up the great work!
Just got the Rubik in the mesh bracelet and I really like it a lot. I'm gonna get the rouge too since I think it looks nice too.
1:10 WTF is going on with the second hand?
Glad to see Armitron get some love!
I'm an American, and just got my first two Armitrons. I'm usually a Timex and Seiko guy, but the quality of Armitron at low prices point may push me to collect these, too! LOL
I would love the Rogue face panel on Rubik case.
Is the Rubik's and Rogue's crystals really mineral glass ? Armitron's website shows them both as acrylic resin. Normally if it is glass the bevel on the crystal is normally opaque white, but photos shows it as clear which leads me to believe it is indeed acrylic.
given the cons, maybe not so much a Casio 'Killer' as 'Challenger'
nice to see though, about time Armitron got another bite of the apple
I wear my Armitron Griffy day and night and am amazed just how bright and awesome it is. Waterproof too.
I'm sure those are skmei re-branded watches
The Armitron is a much nicer object than the Casio. Feels a lot more solid. The second time zone is a handy feature. The readout is superior on the Casio if you are looking from an angle. The steel Armitron case is a thing of beauty though. Not sure i would agree they are better than the steel Casio a1000 though. That is a beautiful watch and a bit bigger than the Armitron, which would be important to those with bigger wrists.
My wife would tell you that I "need another watch like a hole in the head" but that won't keep me from my next stop, which is Amazon.
The T80.
Waaay too much at $139 CDN for an acrylic crystal, 30m water
resistance, hair puller and no countdown timer. The only thing going for it is the caseback has screws not snap down.
Get the Armitron , happy with mine for half as much.
If you were lower middle class in the 80's, you had an Armitron. We all had one.
One of those reminds me of my first digital watch I got in 6th grade with was an Armitron Seiko clone. One day while rushing out of class I banged it on the metal door frame and broke the crystal.
Never fixed it.
My favourite digital is an Armitron, the Griffy, their take on the Hamilton Pulsar/PSR ❤
One of the few times I’ve sat through the sponsor bit - those leather goods look dope.
They are mega, I need to see if they'll send me their updated backpack at some point though, looks far more functional than their old model 😮
If you are looking for new ideas, there is an interesting Kyiv based brand called Kleynod selling Ukrainian made watches with Ronda movements and interesting designs. I was interested in buying a Poljot but in lieu of the current conflict that didn't sit right and that's how I discovered them.
The Vincero Italian leather?
When you get around to reviewing the Armitron analog models, which all claim to have "Japanese quartz movements," could you please take the caseback off and show us which movement(s) they're using? I can't find info on their movements anywhere on the internet. Are they Hattori? TMI? Miyota? Something else? I'd like to know. Thanks! 😃
Thanks for the video. I've seen these watches and never new they were steel
Nice, but I don't like that the display ist set so low.
A cool watch I would like to see is the Orient Retro Future Camera. I've had my eye on it for a while because of its unique looks.
Acrylic glass isnt that like you find Kids watches. Casio have better materials thats why they cost more.
Thank You for all of your videos that you did.
Not all links are working in US.
