  • Gday Stephen here,
    Magpie had me when he met me at the door. I knew Magpie needed to be shared with the world. I smiled the entire time! Rescued Magpie plays with Rottweiler puppy! I rang Tony in 2017 and he said that sometime after this video magpie found a boyfriend and returned to the wild. He does, however, have visitors to his shop who inquire about Magpie.
    Jagzilla suggested Magpie should be called Naggy! Funny! Thanks, Jagzilla from this day forward I will call baby magpies Naggy!
    In the wild, they eat insects & worms. Two families of magpies that visit my home get irregular serves of meat scraps and mince. The whole family sings for their dinner it makes me laugh and smile. Their song is glorious, unlike Magpie who just squawked!

    Magpies are very smart and probably the easiest bird to tame. My mum used to feed them all the time with raw mince meat, they loved it. But when it got light early in the morning and my mum didnt go outside and feed them, the magpies would go around to all the windows on the house tapping on them until they woke someone up to feed them.

    A lot of commenter don't know that this is a juvenile bird and it's why it makes a lot of noise especially when fed. In the wild the clutch has 4-5 eggs and they have to be noisy so the parent birds keep feeding them all day long. The adult bird has a richer variation of chirps and would not be noisy like the young. They are very intelligent birds. There was a a pair raising chicks near my window and they attacked anything that is a threat for their chicks including big crows. They even land right next to crows and wait for the crow to take off as they're faster and more agile in the air they can easily pluck tail's on the crow's tail while flying. I swear they knew i was no harm to their young and would treat me peacefully even with curious and intelligent looks. When I saw how hard the parents work to feed the young returning to the nest every min or two with food the whole day, I developped respect for them. A month or more later i saw the youngs flying around and acting like children very sweet and cute, and still getting fed by the adults . They look bigger than the adult because their feathers are still fluffy. The adult look more streamlined. This video reminded me of them.

      That was great to read. There is noway those birds would have laid those eggs there if they hadn't the same respect you had for them. I get a lot of the same crows/magpies (afaik) that seem to just love chilling out on my fence as I work around the garden. Birds appreciate chill good vibes.

      Maggies have guts, that's for sure, we have heaps here and they attack the hawks, goshawks and even the eagles to keep them away, which is great for us, because it keeps them away from our pets too. Is amazing to see a dozen magpies all work together to chase off a full sized eagle...

    People say Magpies are bad, this isn't true. They're apart of the same genus as the Crow and Raven. Essentially, they're extremely smart. And they do have memories of who treated them right, and who treated them badly. They're awesome birds.

    Wow, I love this sweet, happy, talkative little bird. She or he would be nice company as s/he is so happy. Birds live in flocks in their natural habitats, thus they get lonely easy, thus including this little magpie in all of the family activities, or just hanging out in the same room with her/him is really good for them as they need the attention and companionship.

    • @TomCatFromMA
      @TomCatFromMA 7 лет назад +3

      Listen. What makes you think he's so happy?? Just because his call sounds happy to you? The bird is hungry "all the time" like it says in the video. It is asking to be fed most of the time. See the downy feathers? It is a fledgling and cannot forage for food yet. Don't anthropomorphize.

I truly am thankful for those responsibilities. My mother used to get a big smile about all of the critters that I would bring home. I loved them all. I even had a pet crow at the same time that my best friend did.(from diff. places) Smile & much love to all.

      @ChilapaOfTheAmazons 6 лет назад +6

      Compare a T-rex and a magpie. I wouldn't say that the magpie is underrated, it's simply nowhere as impressive as a real dinosaur.

    • @lan6947
      @lan6947 6 лет назад +17

      They're more intelligent though. Eurasian Magpies are almost as intelligent as humans - and more intelligent than dolphins.

    • @szymusiek1980
      @szymusiek1980 6 лет назад +3

      +Chilapa - compare a cassowary to T-rex and then you will find the similarities. Cassowary is as dangerous to human as a T-rex would be.

    • @PowellStephen

      Cassowaries are a large bird and can be dangerous if cornered or threatened as with any wild creature. Some are regular and welcome visitors to some peoples gardens. Welcoming a T-rex, I think not!

    Wow I wonder what happened to her mom and dad...most babies with no parents would die, but how lucky this youngster was that her temerity/intelligence and those people's kindness/patience coincided! I have a cat like that, a street cat that we rescued and once she figured out we weren't going to hurt her she never shut up in her quest for treats. My husband calls her a "troublemaker," I say, "she knows how to get what she wants...you give in to her every time!"

    They're so sweet and when I am depressed or in pain they come and snuggle with me :)
    ( 1 has 1 eye and 1 leg )
    ( 1 has 1 full wing and one half and one leg )
    ( One has 1 eye and 1 full wing and 1 half wing)
    If you feed magpies but not feed them to much they tend to not swoop humans who give food and they let the other magpies know.
    Been with me 10 years there so well trained they have a poop bucket and sleep with me on my bed and sit on me watching movies. ( Hehe some mornings there on there backs with wings out and like Bloop.

    Huge relief at 1:38. Was wondering if anyone was actually caring for the 'pie! Nice that someone is trying. BUT, this is a young bird (or was, when the vid was taken) and needs feeding very often..

      My appoligies, in my previousa reply I thought you were refering to another post. Magpies do live a long time. We have two families that vhave been visiting our house for many years.

      Stephen Powell oh fantastic. I have one family that visit every night. That I feed them. I feed them mince with a high mix of wombaroo rearing but I’m just woundering if there is something better like boiled eggs. What do you do. This family usually come inside to.

    • @PowellStephen
      @PowellStephen  3 года назад +1

      @@LW-qe8nk I don't feed them mince. It can stick in their beaks and cause beak rot. We occasionally feed them pet food that comes as a plastic-wrapped 'sausage'. it is firm and can be sliced into worm sized bits. I assume because it is a pet food it has a range of nutrients. Our approach is a little infrequently.

    Is it coincidence that the magpie sounds like a tire gun ?

      True. I thought at first it was the telephone, and that he is just an immature bird. But you are right, it is the tire gun he's mimicking. Good call!

      @@frenne_dilley Yes, we have a yard full of them at the moment (we are a small 2 acres of sanctuary in amongst cows farms, so all the birds, of every species, hang around here to breed, raise their young, and steal the left-over chook food). They all sound like that, and they are always hungry, the parents are saints, they put up with this demanding screaming until the young are fully grown, and even then, the little buggers still demand to be fed.
