pls note that up has ordered 100 unit of them as 3000 class series, #3012-3099 is the production unit while #3000-3011 is a 12 emdx demo unit currently on testing at other carrier, once testing is complete the emd will hand over 12 demo unit to union pacific, of 15 unit #1501 will be used as testbed while #1603&1604 which has only 4 power axle will go to bnsf.
When I worked for CSX we had nothing that nice and shiny. I guess it's because our division included the main shops & they'd route the almost-crapped-out engines our way, so when it was time, they could limp in for the overhaul.
One thing CSX has over up is they spent some nice money on some of the rebuilds. I've seen SD40-2 rebuilds with repainted interior slightly larger cab new interior lighting. What do you get at up? fresh coat of interior and exterior paint. Interior may have been painted over some of the previous layer of dirt. New inward facing camera and a small addition to the electronics maybe new seats . Everything else looks the same as in 1975.
Tier IV are not EMD anymore. They belong to Caterpillar now. Caterpillar should do a rebranding to it's locomotive company so people should know them as CAT locomotives from now on. And nothing to love about them either....that growling V12 four stroke engine sounds nothing like the good old 710 engine....V16 and two stroke. The screaming sound of two stroke engines is what consacrated the EMD image...
sorindncs Caterpillar owns the company called Progress Rail. This happened years ago. Progress rail released a press statement saying the company EMD is no longer, however they will still use the EMD name and logo on their locomotives, as well as Progress rail.
Nice catch. I've been watching for some of these on the Golden State Route and I'm sure they've been past, but I haven't seen one yet. The flat top should make them easy to spot.
The problem with the loader is it isn't working hard all the time and the tech that replaced the entire system stated he'd heard from the factory they were having a lot of problems with that. Model loader with the emissions systems. The sensor was replaced 9 times before the owner said fix it this time or give me my money back. That's when they replaced the entire dos system and that fixed it.
Stupid question here - Would I be correct in assuming that when a regular locomotive pulls an Amtrak, that the RR company provides the crews all the way through from Point A to Point B, etc?
As I remember talking to an EMD engineer involved in the Tier-4 project they were redesigning the engine to meet Tier-4 specs without using DPF fluid. GE GEVO's don't use DPF and meet Tier-4 specs primarily because the railroad's didn't want the additional expense and trouble DPF brings to new diesels. My neighbor runs a loader at a gravel pit and 2 years ago they bought a new Volvo 220 front end loader and 7 months old they lost 217 hours of service because the DPF emissions system kept stopping him to regenerate. The fix? The service guy from the dealer had to replace the entire emissions system to get it to work properly and this was with a factory engineer working alongside the mechanic. Can you imagine a railroad loosing that many days of service on a new multi-million dollar locomotive? This is a perfect example of why the railroads don't want anything to do with DPF systems. DPF also adds a ton of equipment to the locomotive to meet Tier-4 specs, so why bother if you can design the engine to meet the specs without using DPF. Personally I think we are going at it the wrong way in Europe construction equipment and diesel locomotives don't have to meet Tier-4 specs as they aren't the reason for the majority of pollution. It's the millions of cars that are the problem iIMHO.
DPF is the particulate filter, it doesn't use fluid. DEF is diesel exhaust fluid and is a separate system. Modern diesels use a combination of the two systems to meet emissions regulations. I don't know how they can engineer these systems out of new engines completely. Maybe there's some new tech?
Rick S Oops thanks for the catch there Rick spellcheck strikes again. GE was the first builder to meet tier 4 specs without using DEF as their customers here in the states said they wouldn't buy any locomotive that required it. Locomotives are expensive enough to buy and operate without having to equip all the fueling stations with an expensive additive. GE simply went back to work to find a way to meet tier 4 without any additive and they were successful, the EMD ran into the same problem with their new 4 stroke engine and had to do the same thing. I've driven a dump truck with a tie 4 engine and had the computer tell me after 5 hours of operation on the first day in service to pull over and start a cleaning cycle. Took 50 minutes before I could continue initially I ignored it until the computer cut my power to the point I could barely move in first gear. Imagine what the railroad would say if an engineer reported he was coming to a stop on a busy single track main line because he had to run a clean cycle on the emission controls! That is exactly why the railroads refused any new power that requires it. That dump truck I drove with it? Took 7 days to fix.
If the diesel is run hard and hot, an active regen should hardly ever be required. A lot of idling or slow running will cause the DPF to build soot and thus require an active regen. Most of the time in cases such as yours, a sensor is found to be at fault. It's kinda cool that diesels don't stink like they used to but the tech needs improvement.
Train probably can't go as fast as it could as nearly all freight locomotives today are geared at 70mph. The Amtrak unit is probably pushing the UP unit somewhat, being geared higher.
No more REAL EMD 710 2 - Cycle engines...EVER!!! For new-build...power! Welcome to the damn world of Tier DAMN 4. The only consolation is that EMD 645 and 710 rebild will continue to run until after most of us are DEAD. But it's indeed very SAD that the era of the whine of brand new EMD locomotives is now over. Very sad indeed! Even as they finally came back with the EMD windows up front!
The ACe's design honestly looked awkward with a chunk of the long hood missing. The hump doesn't really detract from the appearance any more than that of the ET44AC anyways - the 70ACe's is longer, but the ET44's sticks up like a middle finger. While I like that EMD resurrected teardrop windows, the way they designed the nose slopes to be reminiscent of GE makes the face look worse than older notch-nose SD70s. I do have to say, though, they managed to make Armor Yellow look somewhat appealing, with the way it's applied to those huge flared radiators. Which is an accomplishment for anything not a covered wagon or a DDA40X.
I like the EMD version more as well. Tired of looking at GE locos all the time! Wish NS would get some of those EMD T4 locos and get rid of some of the GE locos! EMD all the way with me! Judging from the video, the EMD sounds great with that new 1010 engine! People need to give this thing a chance instead of bashing it! I'm not bashing GE,..I'm just tired of seeing all GE all the time!
+NorfolkSouthern1068..... Sure would have been great though if EMD/Cat could have found a way to keep the 710 two cycle and meet the ridiculous ways that the tree hugging EPA try to get the NOX reductions.... why can they just produce better fuel, like they do in Europe, without loading up the engine manufacturers and their engines with all kinds of complicated add - ons and afterburn treatment systems. The new semis of the last 5 or 6 years are getting worse fuel mileage now than they were before they implemented tier 2..... while the very same federal government is Still buying NEW 2 cycle Detroits (6V53T and 8V92TA's) for use in military vehicles and "other" gov't applications... WITHOUT Any of Tier 3 or 4 regulated add - on's !! HYPOCRITES !!! Back to EMD... to me, EMD will Never be an EMD without that big 2 Stroke under the hood, any longer.... at least not here in the US.... they're still producing them and shipping them everywhere else around the world in the various configurations to suit different roads in their respective countries, with the 710 two cycle.
Matthew Sanders Oh, that's fast! In the cab above the window there's usually a sticker with the max speed of the locomotive on it. I haven't been UP locomotives so I really don't know.

Damn, hope a little more dirt doesnt build up on the roof of that station. A train pulling in will take out the whole roof. That is not alot of clearance.
I've seen that, but it is unusual. I wonder if the cars were also powered. They seemed to have some kind of engines in them, and at least one compressor. They looked & sounded too big for air conditioning.

RB Railfan When an Amtrak train has a locomotive go down the host railroad doesn't care how new or old the locomotive they provide is just that it is reliable and able to do the job. I was working a work train dumping ballast from side dump cars when dispatch called me and ordered me to stop dumping stone and get the train to a siding 8 miles away and then go rescue a dead Amtrak train. The mow foreman was mad but we did it then grabbed the Amtrak train 24 miles from the siding then had to haul it 64 miles to its last stop in Boston. My power? 1941 built ALCO S-2 switcher no mu. We had to remove a drain cock on an air tank to feed compressed air to the Difco side dump cars. No other power was available for the work train. Man you should have seen the built up carbon being thrown out of the turbocharger by the time we got to where we were dumping the trap rock that old girl was running better than I had ever heard her run. No speedometer on that engine but I timed her to 52 mph at one point but you should of seen the looks at the few stations we had to stop at with that old ALCO on the point. The passengers were just happy to be back on the move even though there was no lights or air conditioning.. Only problem I had was after arriving in Boston was an Amtrak train master who asked me why a switcher was used instead of a road engine? I told him it was the only engine available closest to the train, we're here aren't we? He just looked at me and walked away. Why use an old ALCO switcher? The GP-10 they were going to use had a water pump fail and the old ALCO S-2 was the only other available engine. You never know what the day is gonna bring.
The Tier 4's look pretty good actually.
Good to see the "EMD" style windshields back.
Gabriel Perez yes the teardrop windows are so good
pls note that up has ordered 100 unit of them as 3000 class series, #3012-3099 is the production unit while #3000-3011 is a 12 emdx demo unit currently on testing at other carrier, once testing is complete the emd will hand over 12 demo unit to union pacific, of 15 unit #1501 will be used as testbed while #1603&1604 which has only 4 power axle will go to bnsf.

I’ve seen at least one brand new version of a csx locomotive but it’s rare
I think the SD 70ACe Tier is spectacular. The teardrop windows are again brought back. The GEVO looks to me like most GE locomotives.
Radiator housing just fits under the platform roof
Beautiful night photography!!
Awesome catch of AMTK #822 P40DC Phase III Heritage Unit and UP EMD SD70AH-T4!♥️👍

I wonder if they make a "New Engine" scented tree lol
i'll buy 10!!!!
They deteriorate very quickly due to lack of proper hygienic practices. Pre and post covid.
Just something about the smell of diesel in the morning 🌄
Awesome catch Snuffy, beautiful locomotive! Excellent video as always.
- Balerio
Thank you!
That is one sweet engine. The UP of course.
The headlights weren't on when the locomotive departed the station.....
Nice crisp clear audio great shot content nice nights work...professional shoot
Love the bell on 822
I might have been in that 3012 some time ago. I don't know, i've been in so many most don't stand out in particular.
Amoral 822...The type engine we lovingly call 'mud missles' after bridge disaster in Louisiana years ago...
OMG THE PAINT THO!
Awesome , it is the most special Amtrak what I ever seen .
Thanks!
Sweet. So new and shiny. Thanks for sharing. I liked and subbed
Nice catch. I've been watching for some of these on the Golden State Route and I'm sure they've been past, but I haven't seen one yet. The flat top should make them easy to spot.
Thanks! This unit is currently at West Colton yard, FYI.
I love trains
A locomotive that is 10 times better then any P42 will ever be!!!!
Do these have *Soot,* then? Those P42 have a little when working hard. It was cool to see it when northbound.
Nice video snuffy; I can't believe that AMTK heritage came back
Thanks!
Gorgeous new Loco!
I'll say!
Nice mise ene sene shot framing very atmospheric there well done great framing
This video was good and I liked it
THAT IS CRAZY THE WHOLE TRAIN HAS LESS THAN 5" OF CLEARANCE
if it fits it ships!!!
Excellent video Snuffy.
Thanks!
👍 Nice catch , snuffy !
Awesome! *Coast Starlight!*
i love t4 aces!
EMD's Ying-Ying sound has gone with tier-4 XP... but it still awesome.
There could be a way to get a ying-ying while still meeting tier 4.
Where’s the bell on Amtrak engines?
somehow i went from anime to this... how does that work?
The power of will

great video snuffy, the locomotive looks brand new and somewhere down the line this model will be in ho or n scale. nice catch snuffy
Hopefully an Athearn Genesis HO scale model,..in NS colors! Hoping NS gets a few of these to get rid of those GE locos! I like EMD better!
Thanks!
E P I C C A T C H S N U F F Y ! ! ! LOVE THE SD70ACe-T4 UNIT!!!!!!
Thanks!
2:06 that p42 idle tho 😥
New Prouduct Corp They are SD70AH-T4's not ACe-T4s
Standard Gauge Railroader unfortunately That's a SD70AH-T4 my friend.
Awesome Video
My apologies if this has been asked before, but what kind of camera are you using here for 4K?
I like when freight engines are on Amtrak trains
Nice catch dude! That Amtrack train must have been short on power or something.
A P42 failed, hence the Tier 4 ACe.
@@AVeryRandomPerson it was how it failed is what he tried to answer

excellent video

Awesome video!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
It's great that EMD went back to the better-looking windows, but that electronic bell doesn't get it.
Wait, electronic?
why build new ones when they have 300 on a track in the desert
One of the reasons is: Government regulations penalizing use of the older engines.
vegasdavetv k
because train engines do not last forever....
Probably damaged beyond repair.
Zack Kennedy,
That's not necessarily the case for the locomotives.
0:36 Whoop!
You gotta love youtube. about 50 questions and not a single answer to any of those questions. Same as with most of the categories on here!
Beautiful!!!
Stupid question of the day: why isn't Amtrak using its own locos?
0.56 the American flag is facing the wrong direction on the right side of the loco. The Union (stars) should be leading in the direction of travel.
Not according to flag code. The only exception is the military.
I love the GE GOVE
its the wabtec conspiracy--they will own it all!!
Is Amtrak 822 based on EMD SD70M-4 (SD70AH T_4) ??
excellent. great job.
Nice catch homie! Snuffy what's the update with the LAUPT run through tracks?
Thanks! I haven't heard of any update about Union Station.

Btw, what happened to the Metrolink Tier 4?
I heard it's going to be in service sometime in late 2017.
I caughe one of those in warner Robin's on the macon District!!
Honestly I think GE did a better job making their tier 4 units look like the normal GEVO. EMD didn't "slim down" the final product.
i like the EMD version more

And it won't be long 'til every single freight locomotive is an EMD SD70AH-T4 or ET44C4.

What was the first passenger train? I'm guessing the Southwest Chief?

Not as much as it takes to finish research on me.
Damn, hope a little more dirt doesnt build up on the roof of that station. A train pulling in will take out the whole roof. That is not alot of clearance.
Nice! Did you check the label to see if this Unit came from (Manufactured) Canada or Mexico?
I did not see it but it was assembled in Mexico.
Thanks for the response!
Nice unit
Awesome bruh
Snuffy's cat, snuffy's cat!
ill bet people were confused to see a freight engine leading a passenger train
Can it run as fast as the regular Amtrack engines?
Robert Heinkel Top speed on these is usually 70

Two things one this Amtrak model is far better and two what is that clicking sound
Yes I hate that clicking sound too I wish it would stop
You need to pay your CATera operator more hes quiet talented
Nice train
Fantástico!!!
Thanks!
Great Video! But...why? these engines are but weeks old and already rescueing Amtrak?
Or maybe the genesis locos are showing their age. As much as I like the genesis locos Amtrak is going to be getting the Siemens SC-44 Charger.
It just happened to be at Dunsmuir and UP decided to give it to Amtrak #14 and headed all the way to LA on #11. :)
Very cool, I saw 4 togeather today in Northern Ohio!!

If there's a broken down train blocking the mainline, I imagine UP sends whatever locomotive can get there first.
what is that whooping sound at 38 secs? anyone know?
That's the electric motor driven air compressor starting up
