Hey, nerd family! In this video, we’re going to be talking about how to break sugar addiction and the 7 steps to help you stop eating sugar!
At the end, we will also discuss honey, agave, and artificial sweeteners.
Sugar is a substance extracted from plants like cane and sugar beet which is refined into a white crystalline substance.
Since their effect on the blood stream, insulin, and brain are virtually the same, they are both considered sugar in the context of this video.
    www.health.harv...
Sugars are addictive because they cause a supernatural release of dopamine in the brain.
    www.sciencedire...
Dopamine is the primary neurotransmitter involved in addiction.
In fact, multiple studies have now revealed that sugar and sweet rewards can not only substitute to addictive drugs, like cocaine but can even be more rewarding and attractive
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
The brain chemistry of those addicted to drugs and those addicted to sugar are virtually identical.
7-Step Process to Breaking Sugar Addiction:
#1. Realize what’s going on with your brain your body, sugar, and flour.
People often stop consuming obvious sugar culprits like sodas and candy bars and trade them for bread and pasta.
As previously discussed, those breads and pastas cause the same problems as sugar.
    #2. Understand levels of addiction
Not everyone who drinks becomes an alcoholic.
The same way not everyone who eats dessert becomes a sugar addict.
We are individuals with different brain chemistry and the important thing is recognizing your own personal level of addiction.
If just thinking about giving up sugar seems like a bleak, dark, and unhappy world, understand this is uniquely similar to how addicts feel about substances they abuse. You may be VERY addicted to sugar.
    #3. Detox
You need to spend a period of time completely away from sugar and those dopamine spikes to break the addiction.
This will often lead to an initial period of headaches, hormonal fluctuations, and just feeling like poop for a little while.
The detox process can last from anywhere from 3 to 21 days.
However, on the other side of breaking any addiction is a much healthier place.
#4. Become a nutrition label ninja.
Sugar is often hiding in places you don’t expect. Yogurt, pasta sauce, are protein bars often have TONS of added sugar
You need to become a PRO a reading nutrition labels and feel free to check out my older video on the topic.
#5. Balance blood sugar levels by eating balanced meals
During the detox process, you need to focus on having balanced meals to keep your blood sugar levels steady to prevent crashes.
You do this by eating meals that combine protein, fiber, and healthy fats.
Whole egg omelets with lots of veggies, Chicken salads with olive oil dressing, and a grass fed beef stew are great examples of this.
Protein, fiber, and healthy fat at every meal.
    #6. Heal you gut
In an interesting study in Switzerland, men who were separated into two group based on chocolate cravings.
    www.washingtonp...
You do this by eating balanced meals as listed above, avoiding sugar and processed foods, and getting healthy probiotics into your diet.
What about honey and agave nectar?
Because of how the brain works the more you eat sugar, the more you crave.
The more you stimulate supernatural sensations in the brain and taste buds, the more it’s going to want and need.
While these sugars do have mild health benefits, if you are struggling with even a mild sugar addiction, you need to cut these things out.
Sooooo what about artificial sweeteners like Stevia?
While previous correlated evidence told us that artificial sweeteners caused additional sugar cravings and even cancer, better studies have shown us otherwise.
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
Randomized double blind studies - aka the gold standard in scientific research - report that artificial sweeteners help us becomes less hungry, consume fewer calories, and don’t stimulate additional sugar consumption.
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
    www.ncbi.nlm.n...
The conclusion on the research as of now points to these sweeteners being ok in mild doses when trying to break a sugar addiction.

i've always ate insane amounts of sugar but for the past 3 months i ate NOTHING but sugar. and i mean NOTHING. BUT. SUGAR. i gained way too much weight and decided to detox. first i told my mom not to buy any sugar when grocery shopping. it worked. then, when i go out, i don't bring any money with myself because i know i'll spend it on food. that worked too. now i'm 2 weeks clean and it has been HARD. i've had some serious headaches but i feel like it's getting better. i'm really proud of myself. also, after about 10 days you will stop craving sweets that much and it'll be easier to detox after that.

Bhavika Aswani It's difficult to get rid of this drug because, you know, it's difficult to not eating, like it's difficult to not drinking water or breathing. It's difficult to not live. Because sugar, flour, etc. is food, food is necessary to live. Cocaine is not food. So calling some type of food worse then cocaine is stupid. Eating too much sugar is bad. Drinking too much water is bad. Eating too many fruits is bad. But it's stupid to say that food cause addiction like a drug.

I'm sorry it's such a struggle, I suppose all I can say is you need to speak to a doctor/professional because you are clearly aware that you have a real problem. I know it's easier said than done, but is there something you could do/have as an alternative like no sugar sweets or fruit? You said that you have to walk for an hour to buy chocolate.... so you can at least go SOME small time without having it. Have you thought about maybe going away to visit family/friends in another place to take you out of the situation? Maybe you could explain that you are trying to deal with sugar addiction and you want to have NO ACCESS to sugar/sweets for a few days to try and break the cycle? I think you need to build a support network to try and deal with this because otherwise you might end up with health problems like diabetes etc etc. Good luck!! :) :)

It's because sugar itself is not that addictive. Sugar is addictive WITH fat together. The most addictive desserts, chocolate bars, donuts etc. contain a high amount of sugar AND fat. And this rule goes also for salty foods with high carbs and fat like cheesy pastas, lassagne etc.

Can't really prevent loose skin after a huge weight loss. It's not realistic thinking. You can try to minimize the loose skin as much as possible by loosing weight at a slower pace so the skin has time to tighten in between loosing the weight. But not having loose skin after a big weight loss or even after a smaller weight loss is not possible. It depends a lot in your biology as well. Some will have more loose skin than others, because of genetics.

    • @attab007

Finally our breaking sugar addiction video is ready! Sorry for the delay on this one :( We should (fingers crossed) be back on track for weekly videos. Let's jam about some stuff:
I want to clarify a point made in the video about artificial sweeteners - The data is not conclusive YET. Yes, when breaking a sugar addiction, a moderate amount of stevia is ok to liven bland foods up... But this does not mean you should running an IV of artificial sweeteners into your blood stream.
The negative studies on artificial sweeteners did show some problems with healthy gut bacteria and I am very wary of giving them The Health Nerd stamp of approval.
In summary: If you can break your sugar addiction without them, do it. That being said, a couple packets of stevia a day and you will probably be fine.
    Use Stevia over anything else.

    An addition to #6.
There have been studies that have shown that the gut has a direct link to the brain. Because of this connection, microbes in your gut can make you crave certain foods. The way to change these cravings is changing what microbes call you home. You crave sugar because the microbes rely on sugar to survive. If you start eating lots of fiber, you will starve the sugar loving bacteria and promote the growth of fiber loving microbes. The healthy beneficial microbes we often talk about often consume fiber as their main source of food. Because you have a lot of fiber loving bacteria, they will make you crave fiber rich foods like leafy greens.

Once you stop craving sugar, you almost don't want it. If you do have sugar it has to be of high quality chocolate. Going through withdrawal is not worth it. You didn't become addicted to sugar overnight so no need to torture yourself. Slowly ween off it. start by no sugar after lunch. Then switch to sugar substitutes like Atkins, then slowly ween off of that. You will find your taste buds will change.

I get that sugar addiction is similar to being addicted to drugs, but here's my problem with it: with cigarettes for example, you could say "I will never smoke again" and just cut them out of your life (not saying it's easy, but you get what I'm saying), but with food you can't say "I will never eat again" right? And I know what you're thinking: you could just cut the sugar and still eat tons of food, but the issue here is that you still have to think of an affordable meal (that everyone in your household likes), you have to go buy the ingredients (in a store filled with sugary stuff) and you have to prepare your meal before you can eat it. I often eat sugar, because it's just easier to not think about it too much and grab cheap tomato sauce and pasta. I think we often spiral down: we feel tired and depressed, and because of our lack of energy we get something quick and simple to eat. This makes us feel even more tired and depressed and so on... Does anyone else recognise this? Would be nice to hear how you broke out of this habit!

Yes, and while you're paying for your groceries, since they know most people have an addiction to sugar, they make sure to add the most unhealthy things near the cash registers while waiting in line. It might be time to start ordering food online.
lol I went to the store the other day and they had moved the candy aisle right beside the health food. It's by design. If we stay sick, they earn more $$$ when we go to the doctor.

True. But you just have to keep going in the right direction and soon you’ll break through that tired and depressed feeling. I eat sugar because it “makes me feel better.” In reality it makes me feel like shit. I use it as a comfort thing, sadly. Trying to break it ...

Hans Bjorgman ikr!? They do that in my local store! They put energy drinks and donuts and shit near the fruit and veggies and they also put other junk food right near all the cash registers. It’s crazy how the stores stock their stuff

True. Another problem is that many food contain sugar. Avoiding sugar also means avoiding lots of food that you are used to eat often. I live in Turkey, its so hard to avoid sugar because almost everything is made of it.

I've tried a detox w/ fruit and had to abandon it. It started off ok but I eventually got to where I was eating 20 pieces of fruit a day to get my sugar fix from the fructose. I lost weight at first but then ended up gaining more than I lost. I can go cold turkey, but my brain just shuts down and I can't focus at work which is bad, because I have to do daily problem solving and thousands of mathematical calculations. What I've been doing recently is eating honey roasted nuts, figuring that way at least I'm getting a lot of fiber and protein with the honey. I've only recently accepted that I have a sugar addiction and have probably had it my entire life. It's actually more of a relief than a let-down. Now I can finally start tackling the problem more effectively.

Super interested in the science behind artificial sweeteners. My 7 year old daughter has a tic disorder, and sugar is a HUGE trigger. We tried sugar free options in moderation, but it still has the same effect. She loves carbs, but we're careful to not let her eat them for every meal, which is harder than it sounds when dealing with a 7 year old.

I am extremely addicted to sugar. Since 2015 I've had it quite stressful, and so, my solution became food. I've always been addicted to light soda (like Cola Zero and now; Pepsi Max), but it's evolved to the extreme since october 2016 and I feel sluggish, tired and sick every single day because of my sugar addiction. When I try to eat healthier and avoid gluten or carbs (pasta, rice, bread, potatoes) I get physically ill after a short amount of time. It's even worse when I try to stop drinking soda all the time. I get dizzy, feel nausious, I get the worst headache and it feels as if my body won't work. I also get easily distracted and can't focus when I am like this, and I get easily irritated. I know people who have been addicted to drugs of which I'd think would've been worse than just sugar, and I feel as though they were better than me overcoming THEIR addiction, than what I am with my sugar intake. It stresses me out to the extreme, and if I could afford it, I would get a personal trainer and nutritionist to help me out. I actually WISH there were some sort of course or bootcamp where I live to break sugar addiction and overweight and stuff. The fun part is that I'm tall, so I'm not SICKLY overweight just yet, but I HAVE gained over 20 pounds in under a year, which isn't really good. i've gained about 60 pounds in 3 years, but I WAS struggling with depression and eating disorder three years ago, but have had a normal weight until last year. Thanks for this video! Hopefully, I'll get through this and lose weight and be healthy again!

You are never suppose to restrict carbs 100% because it’s the main way to get glucose to your brain UNLESS you are on Keto. It takes a few days for your body to switch from getting energy from carbs into getting it from fat and protein. Just track your macros. There’s tons of macro calculators online. Depending on your weight, you can still have those things as long as the quantity you are having doesn’t derail you.

    • @IHeArTrOcK20
      @IHeArTrOcK20 6 лет назад

Also part of the reason cutting carbs would make you gain weight is because you start getting sluggish with no energy from carbohydrates hence your body will not be able to physically preform as much.

The thing is that you don't have to avoid ALL sugar to be healthy, only the added sugar. Fruits and milk (also cheese, natural yogurt, etc. Lactose!) have sugar and they can still be a good thing to eat (always with responsability!).
I am trying to avoid sugar right and it can feel a bit difficult at the start (especially when everybody around you is enjoying something sweet!). But it also makes you fell good when at the end of the day you can think about how much sugar you have avoid today and how that will have a possitive effect in your health in the future (if you continue like this) :)

A lot of things mentioned here are the same things people like myself learn when diagnosed with diabetes. Quitting or reducing your sugar/carbs sucks donkey poo, but when your future health and life depend on it you find your way.
However, I personally don’t agree about artificial sweeteners. There still seems to be an ongoing debate about that no matter how many studies are done. And us diabetics are taught that the artificial stuff is processed by our bodies the same way as regular refined sugar and even turbinado or natural cane sugar.
For those who want or need to kick sugar, may the odds forever be in your favor. For those who aren’t ready or don’t want to... have a cookie for me 😊

For those of you struggling with fighting the cravings, I HIGHLY recommend fresh organically grown Green Grapes. When freshly storebought, they are so crunchy, juicy, watery, and naturally have a mild sweetness that really helps quell the cravings! I have small intestine issues that are exacerbated by sugar, and having a handful of grapes first thing in the morning or late at night has truly helped me suppress the desire to have a setback with cookies and other sweets. Good luck! You are all stronger than you know!
