I'm nearing the end of season two and scenes like this one were my favorite where the Captain is actually on the ship... captaining. There were so many scenes where he went on mission and I have to wonder if that's usually the case for a naval commander or if the show just wanted to showcase this particular Captain going to all these different places while leaving the XO in charge. It seems like they wanted to have their cake and eat it to. Have Chandler be the Captain so the buck stops with him, but still have him go on all the important rescue missions and the like because he was the main character.
From what my friends in the navy have told me, no, the Captain of a ship stays on the ship unless it's shore leave or he's ordered to travel to another vessel for some official reason. But it's also a case of the show taking place during an exceptional time.
I know it's a TV show but having served with sailors when I was in the Marines.....I'm so proud of our Navy. I will always be partial to my Marine Corps....but the Navy does this country so well.
Well I mean our destroyer fleet alone is more powerful than most navies and our Navy is the worlds second most powerful Air Force, directly behind the US Air Force.
@@okedoke1234 Astute class is a more advanced attack sub, given the sound matting making it extra quiet. The US navy is incorporating a lot of its design into the new Virginia class.
The proximity detonators on the world's most effective torpedoes all decided not to work that day... At the same time! Torpedos be like: "c'mon lads let's just sail I'll right past them even though we're carrying enough explosive to blow the ship in half if we detonate now!" Whilst this was a fun scene and it was a good show for the first couple of Seasons - If you look on plans that are publicly available of where the forward magazines are on an Arleigh-Burke if those torpedoes had of detonated where they show passing either side of the ship they would have ignited all the munitions in the forward magazine and the ship would have exploded monumentally! There is no armour only splinter protection around those spaces which at that range from approximately 900 kg weight (combined) of very high explosive the splinter protection would have given about as much protection as a cucumber. And lastly - At the range they were away the sonar on the sub would have been easily holding the ship on passive, by the time the ship heard the torps they would have already been in the water for quite some time and would probably be in terminal homing and there is no chance for evasion when that happens. Cool story though.... As they say 🙂
Not to mention the shockwave from the torpedoes detonating as they passed alongside would have torn the hull apart. Explosions in water are far more powerful than in air, and a point-blank detonation from just one of those torpedoes would have been more than enough to kill that ship.
Can I ask your question? What knot is all ahead"flank 3"? I know what knots it is from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force(Japan Navy), but I want to know a little because there are many unclear points that it is a command of the US Navy. If you know anyone, please let me know.
@Will Kelly holy shit. I thought the ABs usually go 35 kts. But it seems for Chandler's case, he probably ordered to disengage the rev limiters and override the engine safeties, thus kicking it to overdrive. For as we would see it this happen in S2 EP12.
Fun facts from 3 years after you asked. "Ahead standard" is the ship's most economical speed at which fuel efficiency is highest, generally somewhere around half the ship's maximum speed. Some speeds will be fractions of this e.g. "Ahead two thirds" would be two thirds of standard. "Ahead full" is the ship's highest sustainable speed before the ship's fuel efficiency drops off dramatically and the ship risks engine damage. This would be around half of maximum engine power but would be close to its maximum speed. "Ahead flank" is the true maximum speed of the ship, fuel efficiency and long-term engine health be damned. This would only be used in emergencies as it burns through fuel several times faster than normal and is not sustainable for the engine to do. For an Arleigh Burke class destroyer, this is likely in the range of 35 knots, but the true (classified) top speed may be higher. I imagine "Ahead flank 3" would be disabling engine governors and safeties to get more speed out of the ship, but the '3' is not something I've heard of outside of this.
A destroyer has sonar exactly like a submarine. They have anti-submarine torpedo, and anti submarine missiles. From greatest anti submarine capability: Submarines Guided missile Destroyer Guided missile cruiser Aircraft carriers
Uhh really? One of the primary goals of modern (WW1 onward) destroyers is anti-submarine warfare. Back in the day they used depth charges (bombs set to go off at certain depths) but once homing torpedoes were relatively perfected, they became the primary anti-submarine weapon. The only reason most destroyers nowadays even have torpedo tubes is for anti-submarine work.
Good scene, but if that was real the Nathan James would've lost. Spearfish would lock on to her engine noise as they approached and tracked to target. They wouldn't have just gone straight by like they did.
James was doing some. It's a tv show. They can't use all their tricks in one moment or you'd realize the basically never any danger to the James. The Arleigh Burke is the most advanced class of destroyer in the world, with the most tricks and best equipment money can buy. (except a magical third helo bay that is just there when doctor Scott is. Not sure how they missed continuity the size of a fucking helicopter bay but okay) A single one is more powerful than most navies and could probably beat a small country into submission. But it's tv and we need suspense. Theres another scene later the same season in which the James uses another 6 ways to counter a single salvo. And there are some that aren't even in the show for 2 reasons. 1: Military secret 2: It'd be pretty repetitive to see this thing kick ass 24/7
They showed the UK Astute class Submarine aka a sub warship destroyer or as known a hunt to kill - In real warfare this sub can go silent in milliseconds. With the right captain at the helm oof
Can you type the line you heard? I don't recognize the word "sabot" anywhere there. If its what I think, you're referring to is "Fire torpedos down established bearings, Solve for second *****" The word he said was "Salvo" which effectively means "Group fired" -- So he's saying, "Fire our torpedos now without guidance towards last know position of the Achilles(the sub), use the reload time to solve(input guidance) for the second grouping of fired torpedos." Thats if you're talking about the word at the end of the sentence at 1:04
Those torpedoes must be from WW2 when they needed to hit a hard target instead of proximity fuses and wire guidance + acoustic targeting. Then what about decoys.
“Batteries Release”🚀
I like the show but that was Bravo Sierra! No bloody way all four torpedos miss - not with their sensors, sonar and search-and-destroy capability
