Beautiful Black-throated Sparrows foraging - King Canyon Trail - Saguaro National Park

It was the last morning of my trip to southeast Arizona, in the first week of February, 2018. I reached the King Canyon Trail at dawn. With camera mounted on the tripod and shouldered, I began the hike to Wasson Peak. The eastern sky glowed like embers and all was quiet. As the sun crested the ridge, a few Gila Woodpeckers and Cactus Wrens made their presence known.
Near the last climb to the top, there was a faint rustling and some erratic movement on the desert floor - birds…sparrow(s)…two Black-throated Sparrows (Amphispiza bilineata)! Realizing the birds could disappear any second, I just start filming, leaving questions for later. How wonderful to watch the birds canvas this patch of dry ground nipping at tiny seeds of grass. On my way down, I had to look back…where are they now?

Cute birds. A bit more decorative than our eastern white throated sparrows. I wonder if they can or ever interbreed.
