Riding to the New Cycling Hotbed in Arizona -- Tucson to Patagonia

  • Tucson has been on the map as a go-to destination among cyclists for decades. With nearly guaranteed perfect weather, abundant roads, plenty of climbing, and a way to get away and log those early season miles.
It's all of those reasons -- plus newly discovered gravel -- that Patagonia is pinging as the next great stop for cyclists headed to Arizona. Tag along as I hit the token places, roads, and climbs to migrate from Tucson to Patagonia.

Tucson has some incredible bike paths that connect the city, you can do some major distance with never touching a road.

Loved Tucson back in 2000, I used to ride the Shootout quite often. I rode Tucson to Patagonia and back on pavement many times. It's awesome country out there. I love your way. Thanks for the great video.

The Bike Path here in Tucson,
Arizona #520 is breathtaking. It's like our 8th Wonder.
Unbelievable. Incredible how it connects the whole city and surrounding areas together so beautifully.

As a Tuscon native, GREAT VIDEO. Yes, our roads go from brand new (Gates Pass) to absolutely miserable (Mission Road over Sprint Hill). Yes, you'll need wider tires to go over the pass into Patagonia, but those 44s were just enough. Thanks for the warning about fueling and watering up in Green Valley. There's absolutely NOTHING out there until you get to Patagonia. Overstock is the word. Nice bike also. Hope you visited the local Cannondale dealers while you were here.

Haha I recognized some of the spots on the loop immediately, was there yesterday. Also it looks you took the same dirt roads east into Patagonia that I did on a bikepacking trip once. Some of those “roads” really are rugged lol.

Some really bad advice here. Riding Gates Pass and Mission Road is VERY dangerous for a road biker. There is no shoulder. People have been killed on these routes. Also, DO NOT take Highway 82 to Sonoita after you finish Box Canyon. It is a death trap. Sonoita to Patagonia is a pretty good shoulder. King is a daredevil and hopefully his crazyness will not kill him. DO bike Patagonia. DO bike Box Canyon.

This type of hyping up of locations adds to the gentrification and colonization of these places imo. Just say it's a cool place but is there a need to call it a "hotbed" beyond the attention grabbing title?
