Russia’s Giant Military Exercise Wasn’t A Cover For War After All (HBO)

  • Russia's biggest war games in years didn't result in the "big invasion" a top NATO official had warned about, but there's still suspicion in the West that the Zapad 2017 exercises involved many more troops than Moscow let on.
Zapad, which translates to "West" in Russian, took place in western Russia and Belarus between Sept. 14 and Sept. 20. NATO's Military Committee Head General Petr Peval had said the exercises looked like "a serious preparation for [a] big war". Russia said 12,700 military personnel were involved, though some western estimates put that number at 100,000.
NATO observers were allowed to watch the war games, though some complained their access was restricted. VICE News visited Zapad and found the Russian military was touchy about what we could see and where we could go.
The exercises were hit by bad weather and occasional military mis-steps, with an attack helicopter accidentally firing on a group of men, injuring three. Russian president Vladimir Putin watched parts of Zapad, which involved a scenario where a fictitious region of Belarus tried to break away with help from NATO.
Russia has been modernizing is military for the past decade, at a time when trust with its western neighbors is at its lowest point since the Cold War. Sweden is currently holding its biggest military exercises in 20 years, involving 19,000 troops, with support from other NATO countries.

Is that not with any other military? Nations don't let reporters in with 100% access. Just like if I take a tour of Fords automotive plant, I'm going to be escorted and shown things they only want me to see......

No, they are going to let you in on all their secrets, even show you how to disable their electronic warfare trucks as a gesture of good faith )))) I at least appreciate that this is one of the few news agencies which inadvertently showed that this whole hysteria about Zapad exercises being a cover for invasion of Belarus was "fake news". Although VICE really went downhill over the years. The only thing it does well is entertainment.

Perhaps you should explain to me why they would allow a blatantly anti-Russian so-called "news" platform , to see whatever they wanted .They did have NATO observers there , with , I would imagine . similar restrictions ., How many Russian observers were invited to the NATO war games on the Russian borders ?

Robert Fazekas Georgia was when Russia was protecting its citizens, Ukraine was when Russia was backing other Russians in eastern Ukraine against the fascist government. Also, Crimea wasn’t annexed. Crimea had a referendum and the people of Crimea joined Russia. Yeah, and 75% of the Ukrainian army switched sides and joined Russia. Russia is also growing and modernizing its military because when they fought against Georgia and when they were trying to get Chechnya back into Russia, they were stronger but had too many casualties. Russia has also had tremendous success, because after the USSR collapsed Russia was failing and the rich were stupid burglars. Now Russia has one of the most powerful economies in the world and is the world’s second strongest military following the USA ( or so most people say ). You can never know who is stronger in tell you have a war and a war between the US and Russia is death to the whole world. Instead the US and Russia should make a treaty with all the other nations that have nuclear weapons to destroy all nuclear weapons in the world so that if we have a war ( hopefully not ) the world won’t die.

+howabout no We had no business going in these countries under the false pretense of eradicating the threat of WMD (which btw were NEVER found) and bringing "democracy" to the people who didn't ask for it. These were sovereign countries and we had absolutely no right meddling in their business. Am I protecting the dictators? No, but what they did worked and kept the region stable. What we did is stir up a hornet's nest and now the whole world is suffering for it. So, unless you're telling me that a country ran by dictator that keeps everything under control is a worse alternative to a failed "democratic" terrorist state, I'd advise you to think really hard before posting something so stupid next time.

Iraq wasn't strictly NATO operation, it was the coalition of the willing, and also they were acting on bad Intel against a tyrannical regime with expressionistic intent. Yugoslavia, what a joke, you are literally saying that Serbia should just genocide away because 'muh state sovereignty'. Afghanistan was in response to 911, and bonus it was fucked up because of Russia in the 80s. Libya was in support of the people of Libya against a tyrannical dictator.
On the other hand the Ukraine had a port. that seems like a reasonable reason to annex part of their country.

The Baltic countries are right to worry about Russia they have been under Russian rule 2 times and their populations had been forced to work for a government not their own. Also the reason its KINDA ok for NATO members to do war games is because they have been doing them for well since NATO was a thing its just regular for NATO to do these things so its not named warmongering it is a military alliance after all.

    • @abes3925
      @abes3925 5 лет назад +8

Vimini USSR were doing war games since forever too even before nato existed. They stopped because the USSR fell and Russia was rebuilding its economy. During this time NATO took advantage of a weak Russia as the west wouldn’t face any repercussions on the world stage.
After the invasion of Iraq and the world started being very suspicious of NATO especially the US. Then the Libyan and Syrian intervention happened and western influence began to decline moving towards Russian and China.
The US is losing world influence because it’s using the UN to push US interest like enforcing harsh sanctions on Iran even after Iran had complied too have them removed.
Now the EU is having problems since the UK choosing to have more economic ,political and defensive ties too the US than the EU.

Nobody has been predicting a 'big war' with Russia, except some over-excitable young reporters who listen to pronouncements with far too much credulousness. Are we that far from the era of the Cold War that journalists no longer understand how the game is played?
Troop movements and exercises are just one of many means of communication and posturing utilised by politicians, alongside diplomatic expulsions, withholding of co-operation on this or that international body etc. When the players are skilled, as Vladimir Putin most certainly is, actual deployment of armed forces only occurs in controllable regions and at inconvenient times that guarantee that other actors cannot intervene - or hostilities are conducted via proxies calling themselves 'freedom fighters' and 'rebels' that not only provide a convenient alibi and degree of separation, but also ensure that any conflict cannot truly get out of hand, since they do not possess the full firepower or authority of the actual rival powers. At other times, they conduct grandiose military exercises... which guarantee that those troops are on display but are not in any readiness for actual deployment somewhere that matters.

+meh757 Precisely: beating the drum is one of the many empty ploys that have been used since the beginning of the Cold War (where, if you took everything said or printed at face value, you would have thought the world was ending every day for 44 years) and for centuries before when we called our rivalries with Russia 'the Great Game'. Nearly everything you hear from politicians concerning foreign policy is designed for an audience - to encourage people at home; or to rattle people abroad. The media parrot and amplify it, often unthinkingly - which affects public opinion but doesn't affect what diplomats actually do. Almost none of it means what it actually says.

They could have also named it the Belarusian exercises.....Russia of COURSE is going to have defenses on their most defenseless border with no natural defenses, historically it has been an invasion corridor with nations invading Russia using this flat defenseless region, so what if they call it the western exercises?? ....jesus christ you people believe all the lies Vice feeds you! :) The Earth being round any precise cardinal point location it's just academic. Also the former CCP behemoth was the one who divided first Europe arbitrarily in two, using the Eastern subjugated part as a buffer against the "Westerner" European countries. The Easterner forced to accept communist regimes (with leaders decided at Kremlin), have gone poor cos of that whilst the Westerner capitalist ones were thriving. Cos of that social - economical gap, the term of West has gone for all over the globe, West meaning rich democratic states whilst the East the poor authoritarian ones, cos people can't thrive neither intellectually, socially and economically when their governments has turned them in obedient automated like people.

Rolf Saitoti now look at the numbers. You are comparing a small exercise of a dozen tanks and 2 companies with a huge 100 000+ people exercise with artillery, choppers, planes etc. Besides, NATO goal was to train with an ally up north so they really didn’t have much choice. Russia however has similar terrain way further from its borders and chooses to be right up against the border.

CombatantFrost 4, hello, i am russian, and i have family in Donbass, where is the CIVIL WAR, and i have been in Crimea many times, before Russian sent troops to help us against ukrainian nazis, and after that, i will tell you something, because it´s very difficult to talk with you western people, i don´t know what you have in your mind, but i will try anyway, because it´s very offensive to our people when you talked about something never happened, but you not talk about the important things, like ukrainian nazis killing ukrainians and russian citizens in Kiev and Crimea, like ukrainian nazis attacking peaceful people because they do not agreed with the new government sized by a military coup in Kiev in 2014, like ukranian artillery bombing civilian areas and killing women and children less than 1 year old, like ukrainian nationalist battalions sent to Donbas to EXTERMINATE us because we were simply russian people, like nazi hanging people, burying them alive, like nazis bothering children because they publish their opinion on internet, like nazis in cities like Kharkov, Mariupol, Slaviansk, etc etc raping women because they just decided to kidnapp girls of 15 years old, and make them "love" Ukraine. In Ukraine, there is no war between Russia and Ukraine, there is a war between russian people, as ukrainian people can be considered russians, because we share the same blood, history, mind, and land, nd 84% of ukrainians speak russians, or have russian family, at the beginning of the war in Donbass, we were waiting for russian soldiers to arrive, but never happened, only we have volunteers from different regions that came to help, so we were fighting already against ukrainian nazis, but in 2014, 2015 we were militias only, today we have a professional army in our Republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, all we receive from Russian Federation is humanitarian aid, thanks to that we were able to survive, because ukrainian bastards cut off electricity, water, food supply, gas, we could not use banks anymore because they were ukrainains, so we had no money, to buy anything. In Crimea, after the military coup in Kiev sized by the nationalist organizations like Свобода (Svaboda = freedom) and Правый Сектор (Pravy Siektor = right sector) they sent their nazis to fight us, and create caos also, and our ukrainian authorities and army did nothing to stop the killings and attacks of these animals, so we decided to create militias, and defend ourselves, and make a referendum to be part of Russia again legally, i say legally, because we always have been russian people, despite have ukrainian passport, but Crimea this is Russia for us, and this is something you western people can not understand, but this is how it is, and we tried during the 90´s many times to be part of Russia again, but the ukrainian authorities did not let us do it and we were repressed bruttally, so finally we could do it and we did it, so for us, when Russian Federation Forces arrived to Crimea, for us it was liberation and protection, and there it was no firefight, most ukrainian soldiers joined Russian Army and others went to ukrainian territory, so it wasn´t an anexation as you call it in the West, and you must count something, every invasion through history, it takes a lot of blood, because a FOREIGN country invades another one, but for us Russia is not a foreign world, we are part of it, and we came back finally. Today there is peace in Crimea, you can go and visit it by yourself, there is no war, thanks to Russian Federation forces, but sadly in Donbass, the war still going on. I hope you understand this, i leave you some information about the nazis, they never talked to you in your mass media. Best regards.

It's literally cost so fucking much to get the territory under your control, all the infrastructure, business etc. Russia is barely doing that with Crimea but still doing that because can't afford losing bases in Black Sea, and the risk was 100% justified, current UA goverment goverment would've throw away russian fleet out of Crimea without any doubt to get along with NATO countries.

Ciuma Padurii in the first year of war Russia provided actually a very decent support to refugees from Donbass, who moved to Russia to escape war by giving them welfare payment. Main problem is that if Russia would've start bold moves in Ukraine west countries would've been enormous, like cutting down SWIFT and shit like that. So all they could do is covert ops operations and weapon support. But yeah, nowadays support is mostly gone, nongovermental organisations tho are doing charity deliveries for kindergardens/hospitals etc.

"NATO has never been the aggressor"
NATO was the first to put nuclear missiles near the Soviet Union in Turkey and Italy before the Cuban crisis.
NATO invaded Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq and Yugoslavia
NATO put their military excersises up against the Russian border first, long before Russian-Belarussian Zapad excersise. They currently have excersises in Norway and the Baltics which all shares borders with Russia. Not a while ago it was declared that all NATO countries have to restructure their roads/railways for the heaviest U.S equipment.
NATO was originally created in fear of communist Soviet Union, but it doesnt exist anymore. Russia is not a threat anymore, as Sen. Franz Klintsevich said 3:07 Russia wants to be friends with everybody. But because of the Russophobic politics it gets hard for Russia

by the way i see things going right now. Russia will be a superpower again. You want to know why? People dislike european union ;) Most eastern european civilians hate eu and their shit. Before we joined eu (estonia) the eu was promising to help build our land while yes they have done it but at what cost? our country is in dept since it changed currency in 2010 to eur. Prices have gone higher mid to high class citizens wage gap is rising and there is a lot more poverty now than it was 15 years ago. So yes Russia will be a superpower in future and thats only because the nato's warmongering. Thats my point of view from a place where I live side by side with russians. You know whats funny though? the eu makes propaganda and our country's liberals are puting russians in bad spotlight but half of our country is full of russians and i dont see it working out fine in the end when they keep doing it.

    • @augustus331
      @augustus331 6 лет назад

I'm sorry to hear about that, I hope your country will fare better in the future. Why I think Russia won't be a superpower anymore, is because they rely on natural gas and oil heavily. But with the low prices set by OPEC and the green initiatives gaining ground all over the world, we rely on those recourses less and less and with that, Russia's main source of income has shrunk. Again, I hope Estonia will get better soon. Cheers

*+Guinness* Honestly it is not as bad as he makes it up to be. Depth is 9.5% of the GDP so not too bad, Prices went higher to cope with the huge change of currency value (1 EUR to 15.65 EEK), poverty and wage gap mostly came from the party we had in charge (mostly known for changing socialist leaning policies to capitalist ones with a bit of corruption thrown into the mix and voting fraud) and they're no longer in power.

Serbian ultra-nationalists encouraged a wave of ethnic hatred, managed to establish control over their government, military and paramilitary militias, and then unleashed a campaign of ethnic cleansing not seen in Europe since 1945. for several years, other countries looked on, wondering if they should stop this. Finally, they warned Serbia's government to desist their campaigns, or face military consequences. When the ultimatum was refused, NATO forces unleashed a storm of cruise missile attacks upon Belgrade. Many people died, including civilians. But the mania of ultra-nationalism and ethnic supremacy was broken. If only those Serbian leaders had believed the NATO ultimatums, accepted that their crimes were untenable before the deadline and surrendered. Their hubris was paid for with the blood of their citizens. That blood to be added to the blood shed by forces under their encouragement who had murdered tens of thousands of other fellow Yugoslavians.

To be honest, Russian technology has been known to be notoriously unreliable and just plain bad in the times of the Soviet Union (because they didn't have to make sure the product was good to ensure sales; people just didn't have any other options). For that old dude, it probably does seem like a win when helicopters didn't fall out of the sky and rockets didn't blow up some barn in a completely wrong direction.

Russian technology, especially military technology, is considered some of the best nowadays. In the 40s and up into their fall they managed to pump out large amounts of aircraft, tanks, firearms and anything to do with their military in large amounts and in some cases double the amount of any other country simply because while they weren't extremely advanced, they were cheap, they had large amounts, and they worked.

So the statemnt by that officer should not come out wierd, i mean NATO does the same and gives exact same conclusions, thats why i cant really figure out what is your problem here.

And I know my comment wont be highlited ever since VICE is pro NATO media but ask Italian and French troops who died from radiation after serving in south part of Serbia the province of Kosovo. No NATO aint agressors they just happen to contaminante some parts of the world. And your reply is stupid, if your only answer on the question of commiting agression and terror on common people is another question then you have some problems in your head.

    NATO is no match .
Not because I don't like NATO, but history teaches when you try to combine many ethnic diverse people under one banner(NATO) soldiers start to question why and I going to the front today to die what purpose ? For the motherland or for NATO .
The Russia country knows they are fighting for there soil there families . Army without genuine purpose seldom win " Vietnam was a great example how America lost against the the North Vietnamese army .one was fighting for its soil another fighting for ideology.

Read a fucking military book or something.
Wars aren't won by ideology, they are won by resources and good tactics. We were in fact very successful on Vietnam but a few major mistakes from Congress (politicians not listening to generals as always) fucked it all up.

Alberto Francesca it doesn't matter what you are fighting for when you are being economically choked and can't afford to fund your military. Without money you can forget any chance of successful war campaigns, regardless of your intentions.

J Mik 100 per cent agree.
But we are talking about Russia with a high agricultural sector,, minerals, gold, oil ,gas . With a huge gold reserves.
What makes the difference is Russia close relationship with china.
China has money and Russia has what china needs even selling the best military hardware because they need trade.
The big loser is EU because they need trade with Russia.

"NATO has never been the aggressor" whou are you kiding? It's allways the same 1. russia is aggressor 2.serbs did genocid in civil war 3.afghanistan did the 9/11 4.gadafi was dictator and killer
    1. If Russia is aggressor explain why does the US have troops in Europe?, and why is us provoking russia (puting nukes on your planes and fly colse to russia's air space) 2. Genocid was commited by both sides 3. the people who you funded to fight soviets turned on your and did the hi-jackings (and did a plane really hit pentagon, i mean where was the plane) 4. when gadafi rise to power his people lived in tents, then he transofrmed libya to power in africa , they had free education, helth care, high paying jobs , standard of living was never better (and when libya sold oil every citizen had profit) and now look how is your democracy helping the wold

From Ekaterina The Great (II), who was actually of German descendant, Russian and German history know a lot og fruitful and effective cooperation.
But USA and UK will never allow great Russian and German alliance.

Russia's historic aggression includes conquering all of Eastern Europe from Stettin to the Baltic and holding it as an imperial fiefdom for 44 years, spying on the inhabitants they claimed to 'liberate', executing those who tried to escape their control, and sending opponents and people who simply wanted democracy to prison, the gulags or Siberian exile. You'd think people would remember something like that...
