    Trailer is nice! Thought about doing this too instead of a 5th wheel. I will tell you though, that carbon monoxide detector is pointless up there. Carbon monoxide is heavier then air, so it should be right below where your pillow height would be. That way it goes off before it fills the room while you’re asleep. At that point, where it is, you’d be dead by the time the detector went off, if you were asleep in there.

    Nice job, dude. It's simple and gets the job done, which saves space. It's easier for others to copy if they're looking for how to build one on their own. A lot of people over-complicate their builds and they end up cramped and super heavy.

    • @JayOakes
      @JayOakes  3 года назад

      Thanks. It's easy to get too heavy. I found a few places where I could trim a few pounds. When it's all loaded with toys I'm easily close to 10k. Last time at the scale with 3 quads was 9500

    We have a 41 foot diesel pusher and still very much enjoy our 29 foot gooseneck enclosed trailer with 10 feet of living quarters in the front. We do most of our cooking in the garage in the front is separated and heated for cold weather snowmobiling. We have all the major appliances and a sink. This year I need to give up some garage space for a shower/ toilet.

    Looks great you did a good job for a last minute build! FYI if you decide to buy a new trailer have the trailer builder use screws to attach plywood interior walls. Do not use staples. Also a one piece aluminum roof,thicker gauge metal for exterior walls and replace the drop axles with straight axles it will increase ground clearance and enable you to lift trailer higher should you need to in the future. Most of all HAVE FUN!!

    • @JayOakes
      @JayOakes  3 года назад +1

      Great ideas! More clearance would be ideal and increasing the overall build quality would be nice for life longevity. I'm pretty excited with this one for now, but definitely excited about some future improvements.

  • @JosephWolf
    @JosephWolf 3 года назад

    What I learned recently on a conversion that I just begun is that sometimes the plywood panel is held on what looks like a tiny Phillips head screw but it doesn't come out with screw driver.
    If you go off to begin a project like this see that the existing wood panels are held on with screws.
    Also consider the interior height if you want to put air conditioner in there may need to be taller than you think

  • @djsonfire0001
    @djsonfire0001 3 года назад +1

    I agree with you on the vinyl click flooring! Great job I was also going to say between the metal supports under your floor you can also build storage boxes in between them so you could lift your flooring up and have tons of storage in between all of the Rails or some of them ... great job on the build that is one sweet trailer! (You can also use one in insulation under the trailer and when you're done putting it up use some paint on weatherproof. )

    • @JayOakes
      @JayOakes  3 года назад

      Love the suggestions! I like the boxes in the floor and considered that for storage, but decided against it because of time. I may opt for it down the road or in the next build, but they are really convenient. And insulating the floors would be a good route to go. Do you have a suggestion on type of insulation?

    • @djsonfire0001
      @djsonfire0001 3 года назад

      @@JayOakes in my 6 by 12 I have half inch on the floor and 1 and 1/2 in my walls and ceiling. The half inch on the floor is a little drafty but not bad with just a space heater in the winter time in central Arkansas. This winter I will be putting one in foam insulation on the underside and then trying to find a mastic type paint to paint it to weatherproof it. I use the polypro board foil facing the airspace from lowes. I live in my trailer full time and the insulation is great for summertime like I said for winter I was thinking about adding the one inch

    instead of removing the original wood paneling, could you place the future insulations/foam over it, then cover with more wood? Curious about that. The top tier mattress is a good idea, leaving it near floor level ( as other cargo trailer converters do) means some wasted space. Also, you could put a 'den' with TV underneath the bed, when the trikes aren't brought along .

    Lots of good ideas but I find it interesting when a person designs a kitchen like yours. When washing dishes, one needs a sink big enough to hold the pan otherwise water will splash everywhere. Also the location of the stove hinders the dish washing experience. My conclusion is that the people who design these types of kitchens probably are not the dish washers of the family. 😁

      Thanks! What a compliment! The bunks are 2x4 frames, 1x4 slats underneath, hinges to the wall and then a 1x4 on either side of the front corners with a screw (soon to be a bolt) through it as the pivot point. Then I used bead board to cover the slats and cut out mattress topper foam as the mattresses... but they're only for toddlers, so I could get away for simple and a faux mattress.

    Very cool build out, I’m looking at doing around the same size. After looking at your floor plan I’m a little surprised you can’t fit more than 4 quads. Is that the max or just the most you’ve loaded in so far? Also would you go taller on the trailer next time? (I assume you have 6.5’ inside height)

    • @JayOakes
      @JayOakes  3 года назад

      Thank you! Because of things mounted to the walls, you can't get them side by side between the wheel wells. So if they're all full size quads, I can only get one between wheel wells and 1 ahead of that and dirt bikes aside them. Plus, I generally keep a pretty large tool box in it which takes up a bit of space as well. For height, it's 6'-6'6" depending on where you stand and YES! I would Ideally go at least 7, with a desired height of 8. Wouldn't need more than that though in our case.

    • @JayOakes
      @JayOakes  11 месяцев назад

      I have since gotten rid of the trailer as it was a little too small for the family. But we didn't have a shower in it and just utilized campground showers. As for a holding tank, that was something that needed to be installed. I ran a drain line out the bottom of the trailer temporarily and never got past that. But because of the sink I put in it and the way we used it, I never had anything to put down the sink.

    Sincere question. Is that one of those generators that other RV and conversion creators say are too loud? Google says that particular model is 68dB and that quiet is considered 50s to 60dB.

    • @JayOakes
      @JayOakes  Год назад +1

      Yeah, that’s about what it is. It’s not quiet, but if you’re off boon-docking and willing to move it a little ways away from your rig, it’s not a big deal. It also becomes white noise for me and has never seemed like a big enough deal, nor do I use it enough, to justify the cost.

      @JayOakes  2 года назад

      I'm not 100% sure, but I think ballpark is 3500 lbs. With 4 quads in the trailer and stuff packed for a month long trip with 4 people, it weighs in right around 10k. I believe the net try weight of the trailer without any buildout is about 3500 lbs. Flooring, as vinyl click, is too heavy vs. linoleum and with the tradeoff of dollars spent, I could reduce some weight by building things out of aluminium instead of wood. Also, the Home Depot cheap cabinetry is VERY heavy as 3 walls of it are particle board.
