    Hi Austin. I just watched Zola and it was amazing. Colman Domingo is sooooo underrated. This man should be getting nominated for all these acting awards. This film reminded me of Spring Breakers. The look and style of the movie. Love all your reviews Austin keep giving us that A+ content. One love!

    Saw Zola in theaters today. I thought it was good, but not great. I think Bravo is a fantastic director and can establish style and mood very well, but I wanted more from the screenplay. I ultimately didn't feel like there was much for me to learn (mostly because of the ending). I had the same problem with another A24 movie called Never Goin' Back. I do like the studio overall though.

    I don’t even know which one is my favorite of what I’ve seen tbh. I loved Room which was the first one I watched. That was very hard for me emotionally but was kinda sweet and beautiful. Hereditary was haunting. And The Witch was very well acted and creepy. A Ghost Story left me feeling emotions that I never knew I could feel. Waves… wow what a powerful movie. The Florida Project was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Moonlight was beautiful in many ways. But I guess if I had to pick, it would have to be Lady Bird for a lot of reasons

    Comment After: So yea I agree, I enjoyed the cinematography and most of the soundtrack (mainly the cues in the beginning when they showed Zola and Stephanie connecting.) The acting was also great too.. but the ending definitely left me wanting more from it and the overall story just kinda..bored me. I dunno if I'll ever watch it again but I might read the thread.

    Austin, I think you’re giving A24 a bit too much credit. A lot their movies are made by other indie companies, but are picked up by A24 for distribution, sometimes after they play at festivals, etc. It’s not like Pixar or Ghibli where the studio has their own creative force. They just have good taste in which movies they pick up. And good taste is nothing to scoff at, but let’s not forget it’s the artists who make the movies.

    • @AustinBurke
      @AustinBurke  3 года назад +1

      I agree.
      My point is that they are normally very particular about the projects they pick up. A positive for the studio strategically picking their project is no slight to the talent. I feel like I praise (or knock) the talent according on the film fairly!

      @@AustinBurke fair enough! I totally feel they same way where I see that something is picked up by A24, and I’m automatically more interested in seeing it. But even in this video you say A24 “made Zola” which isn’t really accurate.

    Knowing Zola was based off a series of tweets I was hoping the film would be presented with that in mind and it definitely was! Its less of a depiction of real events and more someone telling you what happened from subjective perspectives. And it being shot on 16 mm enhances that idea. You mentioned the sound and I also thought was an important part of that presentation, including voiceover and the iconic tweet sound. Good film!

    I almost walked out within the first 5 minutes because of how much I hated these characters, especially Stefani. The voice that Riley Keough puts on might just be one of the most annoying things I’ve ever heard in a film. But as the movie became more suspenseful I guess I kind of started to like it a bit more, but I’ll still never watch it again

    • @owencharlish110
      @owencharlish110 3 года назад +5

      Well it’s very intentional. So much of it has to do with cultural appropriation and how that’s influenced by social media. The voice that Riley utilizes is essentially her using the dominant syntax within the black community and over-dramatizing it which is a pattern we see within white people who are borrowing various stereotypes or cultural elements for their own aesthetic. It’s something I think the film could have dived into more but I found it humorous how exaggerated it was because I thought it contributed to the theme of cultural appropriation while also adding to the sense of humor.

    I thought it was terrible. It was boring and tame compared to the twitter thread. They made so many unesseccary changes which i don't understand why. Everyone said the thread would make a perfect and then they come in and makes tons of changes, leaving out some of the craziest stuff while at the same time revelling in being x-rated. There's literally a montage of penises in this movie. The worst sin is the characters. In the movie Zola goes along out of fear. She's being threatened. No she's a lot more involved then that. She's in for the money. And the ending in the thread is absolutely perfect so why change it? They do a million minor changes too. The guy who gets shot is only known at the guy with dreads. Does he have dreads in the movie. Of course not. They made 55oo the first night, in the film it's 8000. they leave at 8, in the film it's at 2. Just silly changes.
    I'm so disappointed in this film. There's a reason why everyone said it would make an awesome movie, and then some filmmaker shows up and thinks they no better. Terrible film.
