maxxxine movie review
maxxxine reaction
mia goth
This trilogy really has me excited to see Mia in more films and it shows the creativity of Ti West.
Definitely check out Infinity Pool if you haven't seen it!
@@FritzTheCat_1030 it’s been in my list of movies I need to see I’ll definitely get around to watching it!!
I agree with the 1980s vibe.
These past 5 or so years, some movies and shows have been going back to that era but it comes off like a joke or over exaggerated. This movie gets the vibe right without going over the top
Absolutely
Pearl is the strongest in writing, directing, acting, cinematography and music.
X is a strong slasher with some interesting threads to Pearl (if you watch it after Pearl), it’s a great rewatch.
MaXXXine is a good 80s slosh of fun set pieces. Hollywood is a character in this film and I really enjoyed it. Sure, it’s the weakest but considering the standards of movies today, it’s nowhere near as weak as some we see outside of this trilogy.
As long as the film is entertaining, it won’t matter to me. I’m excited to watch it!!!
went and saw it last night. it was super good. loved Mia in it and Kevin
Worth seeing in cinema?
definitely
@@balkee42absolutely!!!
I liked the movie, but since it’s the finale of a trilogy I expected more and I’ll admit I was a bit disappointed with the climax.
Just after returning from cinema after seeing Maxxxine. Huge expectations after X & especially Pearl (Mia Goth should've won an Oscar, her performance right up there with Kathy Bates in Misery), unfortunately Maxxxine is bitterly disappointing. I expected this movie to be right up there with Drew Barrymore/Adam Sandler movie The Wedding Singer when it came to mid80s cheese, expected it to be way more violent, more explicit sex, more Hitchcockian......instead Maxxxine just barely dips it's tiny toe in, the supposed climatic scene in the end is ...a joke, in every scene Mia Goth is there posing with wind blowing through her hair courtesy of wind machine, if you're expecting Mia Goths performance to be up there with Pearl...brace yourself for major disappointment. Diehard fans of X & Pearl severely short changed with Maxxxine, bitterly disappointing.
I loved the movie. The third act I thought went on a bit to long, it felt odd, but i really liked it. I think i prefer it to X but pearl will always be my number one
I think for me what failed is I never felt Maxine was ever in any real danger. Granted that’s why we love her cause she is a bad ass but there was never really any tension there for me. I think the ending was easy to see why they did it-it all made sense but I guess I was hoping for something else.
Still enjoyed the movie and will add it to my physical media collection with the previous two
I don’t like using this term but I think some viewers missed the point of the third act. My take away is that is was all about art imitating life and vice versa and the horror movie she was going to be in would have ended in a similar way as this story did. It was all about the reflection of it and the whole movie was doing just that along the way in different ways.
All that can be true and it could still be silly and unfulfilling
@@Trill_Tour fair enough. I personally don’t see it that way especially since I don’t like silly or goofy stuff in my horror. It’s unfortunate it didn’t work for you but between the Argento like quirk of the characters to the scenario I mentioned initially it works for me.
I agree with everything you said. I absolutely adore everything about this movie up until the third act. I totally get what they were trying to do, and I could get behind the reasoning, but it’s something about the way that it was shot that felt very off. I loved how the story progressed and genuinely was hooked on who the killer was. For a moment I thought it could have been her! The rest of the movie I loved so much that it completely overshadowed my dislikes of it.
The quote at the beginning of the film set up the ending really well! I’m not too sure what everyone’s problem with the third act is, but it was necessary to complete the story that was told.
The movie ended for me at the car crush.
I liked it, but I’m a fan of the styles Ti West was going for (the late 70s early 80s dark side of Hollywood pictures). Along with obviously Brian De Palma, there’s a lot of Paul Schrader’s influential DNA, specifically “American Gigolo” and “Hardcore.” I was also picking up vibes of William Friedkin’s “Cruising” in some places. Ti West made a trilogy using 3 very distinct and different styles, yet somehow they work as a larger overall piece. That’s pretty impressive. I’d rank this in the middle of the trilogy. X was good, but a little standard for a horror movie (but that could just be exhaustion since it seems every horror director post-Tarantino has kicked around 70s grindhouse and slashers). Pearl was absolutely amazing and a breath of fresh air for a seemingly tired genre. MaXXXine didn’t quite hit the highs Pearl did, but it felt more interesting than X.
My favorite of the trilogy! Ready to go see it again
Got my tickets for Friday night. Can't wait
what did you think?
Super 'X'cited to see this
Hehehe
3rd act didn’t exactly ruin the movie but it was a tad bit of a letdown that 3rd act was. The movie was headed towards greatness until the ending. I’d still say the film was pretty good
New viewer here. Great review, and very well articulated and explained. Subbed. 👍🏼
Awesome, thank you!
The best of the trilogy by far. The only one with an actual story really lol
It's so funny because I feel the same way. Just came out of the theatre and I love the cinematography so much! So many iconic shots. Now story wise.... I was left kinda annoyed. I felt like we got cheated from a couple moments (Lilly Colins death. The head dos NOT cut it // The detective getting a crucifix to her eye! Cmon how did we not get that shot. It would have been such a beautiful callback to the barn death in X) . Overall i love Maxine as a character but this just felt like she was exploring a scooby doo episode.
Great review brother, I just wrote a huge piece on this and I completely agree with everything you said. The jarring tonal shifts and the lackluster 3rd act were definitely the film's biggest flaws.
I thought the scene in the dark hallway, as the leather clad killer is walking towards the sign, followed by the close-up shot of the gloves as he's watching the peep show was BRILLIANT. Straight out of an Italian Giallo. I feel like if Ti stayed more in that lane (ie: film store killing) this could have been a legit 9/10.
Still enjoyed it. Very fun despite the flaws. Solid 7/10 for me.
I hope they keep going with this franchise. It doesn't need to just be a trilogy
Ti West mentioned depending on the film's reception, he has plans for a 4th installment.
Nah I hope they end it. Some franchises need to end some don’t
Saw it and loved it.
This movie was good, Mia Goth is gorgeous and a great actress. Pearl is still my favourite, that movie was amazing. But this movie is still good, and I actually thought that this was better than X. So my ranking for the three in my opinion:
1: Pearl
2: Maxxxine
3: X
I love your review! Personally, this is my favorite of the three, it just hit all the right spots for me, mind you especially the third act. Everything felt as it should and it's a great way to finish an excellent trilogy😄 Favorite A24 horrors, The Blackcoat's Daughter and Midsommar 🤩
Yeah I miss anakin 😭💀 the memes and his phrases just make al the memories come back, he was a character they should’ve gave more screen time for sure
Giancarlo and Bacon were the best
I was bummed about the 3rd act.
best horror trilogy of all time imo peale was amazing X was phenomenal and maxxine was amazing not a single bad movie in this franchise and everything fits and mia goth is a fucking star ⭐️
I loved the respect and psycho Easter eggs. Everyone should revisit psycho each summer part 2 and 3 (3 is awesome).
Inwish there would've been more horror. Those were easily the best parts of the movie
The movie is a vibe. I liked it.
Loved the vibe of the film, the story itself isn’t the best, it could’ve used 10-15 more minutes into but overall still loved the film.
It was a movie that I'm glad to have been able to see on the big screen. At home would have cheapened the experience.
I think the cartoonish aspect toward the end is a reaction toward what's going on with religion in America. It felt relatable. A lot of politicians are cartoonish, but it could have been handled a bit differently.
1)I didn’t like the director in the movie. Felt she was unnecessary, no connection to Maxine.
2) they should’ve had the scene of her describing what happened to the agent. Could’ve had a Pearl-esque monologue
3)should’ve tied in the night stalker more. Maybe build up the suspense and not give the plot away right away with who was after her
4) what happened with the tape? It would’ve been good if she was actually being investigated or being set up for the murders
5) overall, Mia Goth was great. 80s vibe great. Music great. The movie is worth watching, but honestly the trilogy overall is underwhelming
You glazed for 7-8 mins on one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a while
Interestingly for me the production values on this film were the worst of the three. It was lit soooo dark that half the time I couldn’t make out the actors faces. It felt suitably 80s and the set/costumes and so on were good. However the lighting let this film down for me.
This is a Quentin Tarantino film without Tarantino. The environment and cast, makes the movie but the story is just fine. Its fine
First 2 acts were good but 3rd act kinda weak. Loved the Bette Davis quote and then song at the end. ⭐️⭐️
I think the ending was suppose to give campy. A lot of 80s movies were campy and I think it captured that perfectly lol
3d act didn’t work for me. But the rest of the movie was fun and entertaining
I enjoyed this movie so much. Maxine is a badass. The movie was beautiful
big time spoilers but:
honestly i think maxine’s dad being the killer was TOO obvious and i think it would have been way more interesting if she was the killer. the psycho references, the scene where the script mirrors the murder happening below her, etc. thematically it would have worked too with her killing off other women around her while propping herself up, and the turning point of her confronting the killer could have been her confronting herself and the way she had been stepping on other women to get ahead. maybe even a fake out where she sort of embodies her father while she’s murdering the girls 🤷🏼♀️
My favorite midsommar but the best easily hereditary.
3rd act just lost me as i was depending on it, it felt like a deffrent genre suddenly
I was so hyped for this and it really let me down. Started strong and each act got worse and more convoluted with the 3rd act going off the rails but not in a good way. I LOVE Mia Goth, LOVED Pearl and really liked X but this story was just sloppy and all over the place. I loved so much about this movie but the script was a mess
Fair! I have this slightly above X due to how original it feels compared to most horror movies, but I’m with you on Pearl. So good.
Fully agree with everything said here
Third Act Blind
feel exactly the same way and I know what exactly what you mean.
Did you say you thought bad boys was one of Michael bay best films why is it in the last place it had a more coherent plot than the second am I right.
*Spoilers*
I correctly guessed who hired Kevin Bacon as soon as his character introduced himself as a PI, so when we saw the killer get in Kevin Bacon’s car, it really let me down. I wanted to enjoy trying to guess the killer a while longer, but I knew about halfway through the movie who it was. And yeah, the third act didn’t work for me. Maxine kinda turned into another dumb horror protagonist after saying the whole movie she could take care of herself. The only reason she survived is because the detectives came in in comical fashion to save the day at the last minute. Like she let herself get caught pretty much without a fight. I get she was in shock at finding out it was her dad, but idk I figured with how composed she was in X that she would be able to keep her wits, but she turned her back to the known killer way too easily.
Saw it today...it sucks. Night Stalker tie-in was lazy. Pearl was good, the other 2 are 💩.
W0W!
How were the kills?
Solid but probably the weakest of the three
Not much of them
Not great. Almost all of the named characters to die were done offscreen. The few named characters who did have on-screen deaths were fun, gory kills though. Unfortunately most of the kill count comes from a shootout that just didn’t really feel like it fit the movie imo
so obsessed with Mia as an actor & this series ❤️🔥
X > Maxxxine > Pearl
There were a million storylines and none if them ended in a satisfactory way.
I know..I was so let down and I was sooo looking forward to it. Story was so convoluted and messing and the third act was just silly and ridiculous. Such a shame cuz I had high expectations
Loved it until that 3rd act 😔
That’s understandable!
Nice thumbnail 🙈🤔
Is this meant to be sarcasm? Lol
Easily the worst one of the series. Better with lower budget and less stars, oddly
Fair!
Yeah same here
Facts. I just wasn't moved by it like the 1st two in the trilogy but especially Pearl.
easily the best one from the series
@@mati.p172 Your off your rocker if you think this was best of the 3. Literally nothing happened. X and in particular Pearl were better in quality and execution. This film had no investment in the characters, by the time its over the payoff is not there for the viewer.
IGN gave this movie a 5. Seriously what were they watching?
They also gave Pearl a 5
Worst of the series but it was still decent, we love the series and Mia Goth
garbage movie, terrible writing and acting. nothing happened
It was bad…
1
Dude it was the worst of the trilogy. Everything you see is epic or insane?
Calm down. You’re going to be okay, I promise.
@@AustinBurke dude, you treat your viewers like this?
When they leave sarcastic and rude comments, yes. Your opinion is welcome, but I don’t have to sit here and accept your little jab.
@@AustinBurkeExactly!
@@user-dz2xr6lh6k😂
I freakin LOVED Maxxxine! Pearl is easily the last place for me. I am not sure how I’d rank X and Maxxxine yet.
This movie was just perfection.🤌🏽🤌🏽
