When I first started trying to slap, it sounded more like a grenade going off inside an old upright piano, than anything musical. Several years, and hours and hours of practice later, I can now get through an entire song without my band buddies making that, I-just-stepped-into-a-huge-smoldering-pile-of-dog-do-face. Wish you had been around when I was payin' my dues bro.👑🎸🎵
Daric, I ve been learning how to bass at the internet has 4 years, and dude i got to say, by far you are the best teacher i ve seen. Rly dude, keep the good work. Cheers from Brazil
Man, I love all your Tutes DB! you're without a boubt, the best teacher I've found, you've helped me so much already! New paid student coming your way mate.. many thanks from the land down under!
Your lessons are very instructive. They have a kind of flow to them that instantly gets you on line You leave no space between instruction and practice. - coming from the Louis Johnson school of slap (i.e. the bounce), it is particularly difficult for me to unlearn it and replace it with that glancing blow -
I love how you make your lessons fun wow you got me hella interested in your video wow thanks man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow I can’t thank you more I am improving my bass slap 🤩 thank you man
Hey!!! In the first lesson you said that the motion was in the forearm, not the wrist!! But this one you said it's in the wrist!!!! I'm so confused!! Just kidding!!! These are very good and helpful lessons!! Thanks for posting!!!😁
Great lesson, now I have blisters on my thumb. Two questions, though: 1) You say it is about twisting the forearm but what you do looks like you are at the same time doing kind of a downstroke. Do you actually do that? 2) Also, with what part of the thumb do you slap the string? As far as I know it is supposed to right at the bone of the joint but again what you do looks more like you are hitting it with the side of the thumb near the thumnail. More like you are doing a downstrum while _also_ slapping the string.
I think your first question can be answered with that he just has that technique down and the muscle memory, and if you keep practicing you will get the muscle memory and your hand will get it down and play it autmaticly a little different and "look different" just keep practicing and you geg there and slap with the bony thicker part of your thumb
I will support preceding speakers - very clear lesson, I know exactly what to do, good exercises. One question: I have flats on my bass... it's hard to make any sound... am I doing something wrong? Should I change to normal strings :(?
+TheAndrzejjj thank you! I would admit that flats are a little tougher to slap wirh, but its still doable. Experiment with some different style strings and see how you like it. The ones I use are in the description at the bottom
I love your lessons - there is one thing I just cannot get my head around, at 8:45 onward it looks SO much like you are slapping the D string - I know you can't be. What's going on?
He is coming down on the a string, but is landing his thumb on the d string, so he doesn’t bounce his thumb at all. It’s pretty cool, still a trick I can’t get down.
Thanks daric when you started slapping how long did it take you to get to slap competency? I know everyone is different and learns on different levels but on a rough estimate with continuous practice how long before someone sees results? I ask because iv being practicing for a while and wonder if im doing anything wrong Im starting again going slowly trying to retrain my mind and fingers but I have so much other stuff that i need to practice patience is not my strongest point but as a late starter i want to become a better bass player and take my playing to anothet level But sometimes i feel all is against me but i want to battle through still enjoying while im learning I love the bass i love playing bass just want to be better at it. Thank you again sir
how about how to play with your fingers instead of with your thumb? I started out playing that way and I can't shake it. I've got good speed, but I hit a wall. also am the three finger guy lol
Dude! Your an AWESOME instructor! Of course I'm subscribed! Finally a teacher who teaches with all of the necessary explanations all the while demonstrating examples of the whys and why nots! There's a Brit on YT that thinks he owns bass lessons but doesn't teach shit because all he does is talk about himself, his pets, fam and some web channel he promotes! He sucks as a teacher so why would I go to his web channel?! You are the king bro!
Idk it’s it’s my bass string or me bc I’ve done a hand full of slap bass tutorials and I get everything but the actual sound of the slap good and it’s just not getting picked up or it may be because I’m a budget beginner with a 2nd hand guitar amp 😂
How low does the action on the bass have to be for slap bass? I ask this question because my strings are far away from the fretboard and I have to use a lot of force to slap the strings and get them to hit the fretboard.
How do you get the sound from your G and D strings to sound as full/strong as A and E? I've tried using more arm (which kinda worsens my accuracy) but sound's still pretty weak.
+Chenni Li unfortunately the gauge of the d &g strings doesn't allow them to have as much fullness as the a&e. So the eq might be a factor. Great question

Could not stop staring at that gorgeous Plex preamp hidden in the background there Deric ;) ;)
+sherwin chia oh yea!
Back in the old days here in good 'ol USA. This style was called thump pluck. I still call it that. Either way. You got this on point.
That's cool
I like it a lot

One important thing: what's the strings action on that bass and at what fret ?
I will support preceding speakers - very clear lesson, I know exactly what to do, good exercises.

Does either string require a different slap....harder, softer, slower, faster etc.
Thanks, Daric. I want to learn slapping techniques. Where can I get your lessons on it for a beginner, please?
Do you have a lesson on the thumb technique? On the first part it gets cut off I think
how about how to play with your fingers instead of with your thumb?
I started out playing that way and I can't shake it. I've got good speed, but I hit a wall. also am the three finger guy lol

can you teach me how to do right double thumb on your next course video?
Daric!! I can't see any mention in slap video 1 or 2 about how to actually do the slap with yiyr thumb?????
Just to be sure, the string you hit has to be between your thumb and the bass or between your thumb and the string below?
Idk it’s it’s my bass string or me bc I’ve done a hand full of slap bass tutorials and I get everything but the actual sound of the slap good and it’s just not getting picked up or it may be because I’m a budget beginner with a 2nd hand guitar amp 😂
@jeff parker I was able to do it the next day but thank you for the help 👌🏻
i am asking about how to set up tone color on my bass to play slap
How low does the action on the bass have to be for slap bass? I ask this question because my strings are far away from the fretboard and I have to use a lot of force to slap the strings and get them to hit the fretboard.
+NoPlaceLikeNYC it doesn't trace to be super low at all, but if it's that difficult for you to play properly I would suggest to lower the action
Floyd mayweather big version
your are wonderful

With this exercise improve the pinky strength?
