    Oh, this looks really interesting :o
    As a "new" player (more of a noob than a new player really), seeing the effects of all those difficulty levels made me think "Looks like a lot of bs that makes things harder but not really more interesting", and it didn't motivate me to play to reach that, being a very casual player.
    But those perishable and rental mechanics? They look really interesting, and that makes me want to try it sometime. But well, I've got to unlock it first, but now I'm motivated.

    One thing i love about the new perishable change for orange stake is, sometimes you say okay i win if I have all these jokers right now so sometimes you just end up skipping at the end meaning less chance of loosing from bad card draws as well as being forced to skip if you want to win with the current jokers.

    Great video. I’ve had a similar train of though about how the ultimate goal of high difficulties in strategy games is forcing the players to make more/harder decisions
    Side note, I didn’t expect to see a microbial shroud mention here. I wish they could’ve kept infested Terran for thematic purposes. But from what I’ve gathered, it’s kinda fundamentally frustrating, and I don’t know what could’ve changed/fixed that

    What are your thoughts on how easy a strat is to play, and how quickly it loses? With almost 200 hrs in, beaten gold stake on blue and up to purple on the rest it's something I think about a lot. I'd rather play with a lower wr if I'm losing my runs faster and when you're grinding for like 10 hrs at a time reducing cognitive fatigue is important but often overlooked.
    Of course, you can play the game with different priorities but probably most players are going for the completionist achievements, which requires a ton of hours.

    • @autumnchiu
      @autumnchiu  4 месяца назад +2

      personally I take a quality over quantity mindset --- I'd rather play Balatro for 2-3 hours at 100% of my mental capacity than 10 hours at like 60%. that goes not just for Balatro but for life in general; it's how i got good at chess, sc2, and other games, and how i got thru college and work and stuff.
      the cool thing about doing it that way for long enough is that it strengthens your concentration and lets you stay at 100% focus for longer. ultimately i was able to finish completionist+ pretty quickly because i was taking every run seriously.
      (this goes for games where I'm "pushing" towards some goal; I've also played plenty of balatro where i just blitz thru white stake while watching The Yard, and I'm probably at like 30% focus then haha)

    • @whong09
      @whong09 4 месяца назад +2

      @autumnchiu I think if I take things too seriously I start either choking or might rage. With Balatro do you think the game is always winnable given perfect play from the beginning? Like maybe on the low stakes but I feel like that's probably not true at the high stakes?
      Like there are often moments in runs where you need to choose what hand you're going to score with, the probabilities are similar, and it comes down to a coin flip if you made the right call. Probably the longer a run is the less believable that the run was impossible. That'd be pretty cool though right? A seed where excellent play seems to always lose if the player doesn't know what's coming. Or like PvP balatro, one player chooses cards, jokers, shop spawn etc to make the other play lose.
      Do you track your wr on the higher stakes? Favorite deck?

    • @autumnchiu
      @autumnchiu  4 месяца назад

      - i feel u on the choking/raging, i had to master that side of myself when i was grinding chess. long journey
      - i think below purple stake every run is winnable, purple-orange not sure, but at gold i think it's maybe 50-60% at best? but other ppl seem to have gotten more so maybe there's even more skill ceiling
      - if you want PvP balatro, try Dominion! i intend to make a video on it soon
      - WR tracking no (just lazy), favorite deck either Blue or Yellow. i'm a default girlie at heart

    I find the "I haven't played much of gold stake yet, I'm working on the guide" to be an interesting concept of content creation in games. The more time you play the game, the better you get, but you also have to devote time to making videos. How does one find the balance if the intent is to be both proficient at the game but also need to spend that time creating a video. Compounded on this is time. Content creators want to make videos as quick as possible, but also need enough time to interact with the game to get good enough to even have a worthwhile opinion. This is not accusatory, I'm genuinely curious what your thoughts are on the matter.

    • @autumnchiu
      @autumnchiu  4 месяца назад

      you've hit the nail on the head for one of the biggest problems I'm facing rn. i started making balatro vids a lot later than other creators because i needed time to get some mastery over the game and have something worthwhile to say. and because i spend a LOT more time editing than playing, I'm not quite as good as, say, Balatro University, who spends way more time playing (and not nearly as much editing :P). i can't do the speedruns or records or gold stake winstreaks that other creators do bc i just don't have the time to reach that skill level while also editing for 5-6 hrs per day.
      my compensation is that the quality of my videos is a lot higher. I'm pretty sure my videos are the highest quality/highest effort balatro content on the market rn, and I'm hoping that that outweighs the fact that I'm not quite the best player out there (although I'm up there 😇). I've only been doing this for a couple months, but I've been seeing some great channel growth already.
      long-term, my approach will be to grind other games until I have a reasonably high but not perfect mastery of the game, then use that knowledge to make videos for 3-6 months in it, then restart the cycle with a new fame. so basically I'm doing all the gaming mastery work up-front, then spending the rest of my time purely writing and editing. this lines up well w my natural tendency to hyperfixate on games; i can get it all out of my system at once, then have a pool of expertise to draw from for my next 15-20 videos.

    Got my first Orange stake run since patch yesterday, I love the concept of Perishables, especially on the last antes it adds a layer of decision making involving skips that makes the run so much more interesting. Do you keep your jokers to the end and skip on shop upgrades or do you fish for alternatives? Decisions decisions.

    The stinky stickers make gold sticker hunting so much harder. I have a white whale I've been after, hit the road, my last rare joker to sticker (besides invis), and everytime I see it... it's parishible or rental.
    But I still blindly grind gold stake on red deck, building jacks and dutifully building econ and focusing on scaling a repeatable perfectly cromulent hand. One run, which still haunts me, I had econ and hand independent scaling. Swash, gift card, rebate. She appeared, the most beautiful road signage I had ever gazed upon, with a rental sticker. I was elated, I finally got what I wanted, and my econ was to the moon. But sadly, the whole ship crashed when the 13 jacks were put by the prng at the bottom of the 42 card deck.
    But yeah the meta for gold stake right now is pump your econ, get utility jokers focusing on econ and hand size, pull a blue seal, pair your deck down to a repeatable hand. There's this interesting push and pull in balatro of having your score upstairs or downstairs. High card, or pair builds often have all the power upstairs, but most high card enabling jokers require a lot of hands played, which is econ at the end of the day. But it seems like it's better to have the power downstairs, in your deck. 1 strength card, and a blue seal can enable 4ok easily, and if you hit the planet every round it outscales the blinds until ante 5. But still you may have to spend hands to find your 4ok and blue seal, the scaling outpaces high card enablers.
    So for sticker hunting right now, you want all your power downstairs most runs so you can carry the rental perishable joker to the finish line.

    A couple of things. The STS comparison isn't accurate imo as your actual deck of cards is where adding cards vs removing them is limited, not your jokers slots.
    I think the frequency of perishable, eternal, and rental is too much RNG for gold stake. I'm not against RNG, but this is particularly "feels bad" kind of RNG when you finally roll for a joker you need only for it to have tags that make it useless to you.

    Interesting video, good to hear other peoples perspectives on this - balance in a game like this is always an interesting topic.
    I know I'm in the minority on this but my experience has differed a little on this from yours (for some context, I'd estimate I've been winning about 85% of my gold stake games mostly using Ghost, Yellow, Abandoned and Blue). I think Gold Stake is actually less skilltesting now than before, largely due to the scrapping of increasing pack costs - imo, people were undertaking packs previously - they were expensive, but what was inside often justified the cost if you had solid econ established. It made taking a pack an interesting decision which you had to carefully consider. Now, I think the game is "See a Pack, Take a Pack, Pick good thing in Pack" past the point you've got some level of econ established. Due to this (and Blue Seal becoming broken), I think you don't have to think so much about this and reach levels of power that you just kinda win. While I think that more hand types can win now, and perishable and rental can introduce some interesting scenarios, I think none of the hand types and barely any of the games have the same depth that navigating non-highroll high card used to, especially after earlygame.
    I do think it's a step in the right direction in spite of this though - I think the game is probably more fun at high stakes now than before - having more hand types be viable is great (I think pair is the best, but its not the only type of line you play anymore) and I think that if the flaws are addressed then the positives of the patch will really shine in the long run. I'd even appreciate a stake or two above gold, but not expecting that one for a while.
    Sorry for such a long comment, just kinda love talking about this type of stuff and it becomes a bit of a stream of conciousness lol.

    I feel like I'm the only one who liked the increasing pack cost modifier on orange stake. I was consistently surprised to find myself buying card packs for $10, $15, even $20. They're just that good. Granted, you do need decent economy to make those big purchases, but this patch made it a lot easier to accrue a nest egg and hold onto it (Investment tag $15 -> $25, Joker tags making the guaranteed joker cost $0, all these changes making Speedrun tag more valuable, etc). Generally, the only packs worth buying for the increased price are ones which provide a powerful bonus: Arcanas, Buffoons, occasionally Standard packs. Planet cards are much easier to obtain in the shop (with Planet Merchant and Planet Tycoon voucher), through Joker effects (Burnt Joker, Space Joker, 8 Ball), or card modifications (Blue Seal, Purple Seal). If this difficulty modifier were brought back, the only thing I'd change is make it impossible to find Rental or Perishable jokers in Buffoon packs.

    • @autumnchiu
      @autumnchiu  4 месяца назад +3

      honestly it wasn't a terrible modifier, but i think the new ones are definitely better. similar dynamic with economy management but with less of a "screw you" feeling for the player

  • @prodigg9299
    @prodigg9299 4 месяца назад +1

    I definitely agree this is a step up from the original orange and gold stakes. However I'm still not super happy with how the mechanic plays because while it does allow for more decision making, the way that it does this is by making options worse. If we look at the eternal sticker, that sticker actually can make a joker better because it can synergize with jokers like madness, ceremonial dagger (allowing you to keep the dagger to the left of your x mult jokers without having to destroy something), spectral cards that destroy jokers, etc. Obviously locking you out of selling the jokers is largely a downside, but there are a few ways to use it positively and there are situations where you actually would prefer it to be eternal, which I think is a good example of increased decision making. Perishable to me only increases decision making by making the option worse. You never want a joker to be perishable, but if it is then you have to decide if leveraging it is worthwhile. Rental jokers do have some of this at the very end since they cost 1 gold sometimes you can actually save money by having it pop up as a rental but largely its the same. You don't want the joker to be rental but now that it is you have to decide if it's worth keeping around and for how long.
    Both stickers encourage more skipping of blinds which can be thought of as increased decision making, but again it's only creating this decision by making the alternative of playing the blind so much worse (costs 3g per rental, a round of a perishable). I just wish the stickers were more in line with the eternal sticker in that they actually open up certain opportunities or ways of playing the game instead of just forcing decision making by making the jokers worse. Regardless though great video, thought provoking stuff.
