I wrote, voiced, and edited this guide before 1.0.1f came out, so some of the joker screenshots are slightly outdated --- the basic principles in the guide still apply, so don't let that throw you off!
Ohhhh. Oh that makes so much more sense. The part of my brain that played autobattlers just straight up refused to touch reroll more than once or twice without Flash Card. “No, my money that I get 5 of every round minimum is way too valuable to spend on one reroll, anyway I really hope this Arcana pack bails me out somehow. Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll open a Buffoon Pack and find something in there besides my reflection.”
Im gonna preach my hatred for orange/ gold stake black deck on every balatro video i see until I beat it and finally move on on life. On day 2 of my grudge right now.
First off, you do a great job explaining. The video is well-structured and well-paced. Second off, BLESS YOU FOR PUTTING THE MUSIC SOURCE IN THE TIMESTAMPS!
balatro attracts autistic people like lamps attract moths... anyways, thank you, this was actually really helpful! I like how you went straight to the point, actually gives me something to work with.
I’m mad I didn’t realize this sooner. I played the demo for crying out loud. This is basically the perfect game for everybody born with the STEM autism that Rainman had (or you’re me, with my roguelike special interest). I have never seen more absurdly detailed breakdown infographics of a game than here. At no point in the entire time I played and talked about Binding of Isaac did I ever have to talk about aleph null for a laugh.
Great video! It's refreshing to see you make it clear that you placing winrate as a #1 priority is just a personal preference on how you have fun with the game, and make it clear that all playstyles and preferences are valid, and as far as maximizing win-rate goes, these tips are pretty much the best there is to win as consistently as possible.
I remember one time where I had gotten an actually insane run, I was lucky enough to get Perkeo out of an Arcana pack which if you didn’t know, Perkeo creates a negative copy of a random consumable you have, then what happened was I got the Observatory vouchers which give x1.5 mult for every planet card you have towards the respected hand, then all I had to do was get a single Jupiter and soon enough I had 16 Jupiter that each gave x1.5 mult every time I played a flush, I soon lost the run to The Fish
Good video and appreciate your admittance of not caring about endless mode, especially since a lot of your advice is very bad if that's someone's goal, but it's great advice if you just want to win.
Oh. Well I think that explains why I consistently ate shit trying to force an Endless-viable build while also playing this general strategy but bad (not nearly enough mult mult)
Good Vid but do not sleep on planet cards! If you upgrade hands even a little bit the chips can allow you to net even need chip jokers which can give you more slots to mult utility and econ jokers. Especially with strong hands the planets scale very fast.
while that's true, that does mean you run into consistency issues --- if you're unlucky enough to miss your 5-card hand in all your discards, you'll likely lose the run outright.
I love space joker. Its really good when you play it with the oops all 6 joker. Basically, every second hand levels up the hand type, which is quite broken for a flush build
I’ve literally been stuck on green stake for days for some reason, and after watching this video I beat it first try and then beat black stake on the second try right after. I was spending so much money on “synergy” jokers that only worked with the hands I wanted to play and booster packs and stuff before, now I have so much money I don’t know what to do with it. It feels great to not have to worry about what the boss is or what cards I draw because all of my scoring is in my jokers Edit: update, i just beat my first gold stake run! I had 7 hands per round from burglar and was eventually able to just one shot all of ante 8 from square joker, one holo joker + a ton of xMult cards. It’s like a whole different game
I guess an unpopular opinion but an early space joker is super solid. Don’t even really have to focus planets since your main hands will level automatically
Yeah, Space Joker in a vacuum is booty, but if you're likely to play only one type of hand, he can bank the equivalent value of many, MANY Planet cards over the course of a run. I won a Gold Stake run on Checkered Deck recently thanks to the Spaceman and Burglar... and without a single X Mult.
For everyone listening to this video months after it comes out: This video is extremely outdated. Well, to be more specific, the part about forcing Supernova/Ride the Bus high card every time, and the part about Tarot/Standard packs being bad. These parts just aren't true anymore. This video was made for a version of the game that was far less balanced. You were basically forced into a certain build at high stakes. Now the game is significantly more open in terms of strategy I personally lean extremely heavily on Tarot and Standard packs, as I think they're extremely strong. And you should too! Regardless, you can listen to specific advice from this video, just don't take it as gospel.
My success rate went up massively when I started prioritising economy. Balatro is a game of luck but the more money you have, the more rerolls and the higher the probability of getting the cards you want. Really good video btw!
Insanely good video; high effort, fast to the point, straight forward, great personality and not a chore to listen to. Can't wait for update 1.0.1f and what kind of video you may make for that. Awesome job
I saw your video, opened balatro and played with the strat of the chip joker, +mult joker, and 3 x mult jokers and I immediately won 💀 I bet it was of course with a little bit of luck but it was insane how comprehensive this video was. Great content and great video ❤
hey boss thanks. After getting my ass beat by purple stake for the past three days i listened to this advice and got myself through it. Friendship ended with flush gaming. Now pair is my new best friend.
I have already spent 62 hours playing Balatro and I wanted to unlock rest of the decks while winning stakes on checkered deck. I was struggling on blue stake and I randomly found your video. I decided to try your methods and...I won it for the first time! Ante 8 had a Green Leaf (200,000 score) and I beat it in just one hand - 401,219. Thank you so much, man!
Good video! And I would wager to bet you’re doing this because you live in an atomized society and any excuse to socialize with strangers while also having fun is worth it because that is literally what life is all about But hey that’s just me
the section from 11:41 to 12:06 is great! I'm actually here seeking instructional content because this was the playstyle that, with a little luck, took me all the way up to bashing my head against orange stake with the checkered deck for a while before realizing no this isn't gonna work I need to step back and rethink my life
Loved everything about this video. Concise yet thorough. The game is very lenient at base stakes but rapidly starts requiring a more disciplined approach.
Dang, this was fantastically presented, and definitely not how I approached the game so far. I was leaning hard into planets, which I suppose I was eventually going to realize was not as worth it. I had the joker order concept down pat though, proud of myself for deducing that
Thanks for the video. It helped me unlock the first 10 decks and I won all 10 white chip difficulty. Would you say the same basic tips apply to the higher stakes. The less money from no small blind money is noticeable starting out. I just started last week when it was released on mobile.
The higher stakes are more RNG dependent imo. I've beat gold on a few decks and am going through the decks one by one to gold them all, and once you hit purple stake or so sometimes you just don't hit the hands/jokers you need in the early antes to keep the rounds/money coming to stick to this strategy (don't get me wrong, it's still a solid strategy and I tend to use it) Maybe the really good players can win the high stakes most of the time but sometimes you gotta tailor your run to the rolls you're getting
I know you addressed this already in post, Autumn, but watching this video 5 months after the release of 1.0.1f feels like looking into a cursed time capsule. I forgot how bad pre-patch Orange and Gold Stake used to suck. Minus-1 hand size and packs costing a fortune made most elements of the game so unplayable that you had no choice but to build the EXACT kind of Joker setup you instructed and avoid consumables like the plague until you completed it. Changing the rules of the higher Stakes, as well as buffing non-Joker mechanics like Blue Seals and The Magician, was a really savvy move by LocalThunk that opened up so many more strats.
Good video, I agree that which jokers to buy and keep are easily the most important decisions you make in balatro. That said I think some planets are worth picking up though, like Venus, Mars, Saturn and maybe Jupiter all give decent boosts for hands that at the same time aren't too difficult to make. But I guess if you mostly focus on high card, yeah Pluto is kinda trash unless you are already swimming in money :D
This was good. What's hilarious to me is that I do the opposite of everything you say and I'm still getting a decently high win rate. I think that's what makes this game so fun. Also on the endless mode, I think it's useful to use that to try to buy up everything possible in order to speed run early unlocks. It's how I got many of the vouchers. I knew that I was going to lose rather quickly but it was a chance to be able to grab those vouchers. Anyways, great video EX
The thing about spending money on rerolls and fishing for multiplier jokers makes me wonder if they make up the majority of the jokers I haven't unlocked yet. I rarely see any in the shop and the ones I see are often not great to work with, like the x4 four-in-a-row one. EDIT: Yeah, ouch. Of the 23 I'm still missing, about half are multipliers.
Okay, I will WATCH this video. I’m SO tryhard that I card count EVERY time I go for a flush or a straight and mental math the best option and try to never skip unless it makes like $40 but I STILL feel like there is a lot of strategy I’m missing
I agree with this advice for white stake. To win all decks at gold you will need to have an expert understanding of mechanics that go beyond jokers however (e.g. deck manipulation). But this is a good way to get a baseline you can experiment off of. I will just mention that the latest patch created a couple imbalances - namely the Saturn planet card and the Mail In Rebate economy joker. You can leverage these often.
It would be great to be able to see you apply this strategy to real games fully recorded. I have checked a bit your channel but only see 10 minutes videos on specific topics
@@autumnchiu Ah thanks I didn't know that was a thing, i'll definitely check out the last one. I've just learnt stuff on balatro AND youtube, what a day
I tried it out today in my red pot games and it certainly comes in handy. I don't even want to think about the amount of money I've spent on tarot packs that didn't give any real improvement or on rerolls with joker packs available. Is the deck based on Tarot or 5-card hands still viable after the last patch? Greetings from Spain!
from my early experience, i think alternate strats are still viable as always under purple stake --- at purple/orange/gold, the high card build still feels the most consistent, but i had a convincing run with straights too! will experiment more at gold stake and update in a video~
Thank you for the insightful video! I am curious to know more about skipping blinds. I think you don't skip a lots of blinds since you lose a chance to get money and jokers, but maybe some good deals are there?
I will say if the goal is just to beat ante 8, I have have a lot more success recently going for planet packs. They are pretty reliable to get every game, and can fill in if you struggle to find good jokers on your run. Doing way better now than when I mostly ignored them. The chips tend to be more beneficial on those upgrades though, relying more on jokers for the mult.
roguelikes are, in the general case, about taking the tools you're given and converting them into advantages. while the ability to play a high card build is very powerful, you're missing good chances with this approach. linear scaling gets you most of the way through the game; a little Xmult is all you need to cap it off outside the unfair stakes. besides, even if this advice is still optimal for white stake (big balance patch makes me think probably not as much) I tried following it and lost runs because I wasn't paying attention lol. I think it would be better to present this as a particular playstyle that you're very good at rather than a playstyle that straightforwardly converts to W's
yes! usually when this happens I'll rearrange my jokers on purpose to score less for the first couple hands. usually though if you're in that position, you're strong enough to win even missing the few points of scaling
I just saw this video and it was an interesting view on how to win at Balatro. However, there's this problem where you need to unlock some things in the game to get it, for example, I still have 3 big bosses left (the boss at the end of Ante 8) and I think I need to get really big highscores to unlock them. Also there are some jokers and vouchers that you need to buy and unlock by doing the opposite of what you said in this video. What would you recommend to win matches but also want to unlock everything?
Whilst this is a cool video, it seems to assume you've unlocked all the jokers. I've still not done this, and whilst there is an unlock all, that disables achievements for your profile. I also do not know if the "unlocl all" feature is even supported by the black hole accessibility mod which lets screen readers interface with Balatro so that I, a blind person, can play the game.
I'll generally only skip if it's worth $20+ or if I have a throwback --- seeing shops is rly important to find more jokers, so you should take fights whenever you can!
The wall I am up against right now is trying to win with zodiac. holy cow do I hate that deck I have gone through ante 1 AND 2 without seeing a single joker at times, and when I normally do see jokers is it maybe 3 in the first few antes and they are usually terrible.
good question! with nebula (and all runs w/ telescope), I'll buy planet packs if I'm at a point where i can win fights with high card or pair. the reasoning is that before that point, you'll need better jokers to survive, but once you've entered the high card/pair, you can actually make use out of the planet cards from telescope. if you're going for something other than pair/high card, you can start opening planet packs when your deck can consistently play your target hand (straights or flushes probably). before that point, buying the packs isn't effective because you're not guaranteed to get value from the planet card, so the $4 would be better spent on a joker.
This. I think I play even worse if I do it like in this video. Spending more money on tarot cards instead of rerolls gives me better results. Maybe I'm not good at choosing jokers.
I just started. I thought Space Joker was the best Joker. If pulled early I can milk 1 style hand and get it leveled up pretty quickly. That said Ive never completed a run so i dunno wdf im talking about.
I wrote, voiced, and edited this guide before 1.0.1f came out, so some of the joker screenshots are slightly outdated --- the basic principles in the guide still apply, so don't let that throw you off!

yes! usually when this happens I'll rearrange my jokers on purpose to score less for the first couple hands. usually though if you're in that position, you're strong enough to win even missing the few points of scaling
What’s your take on the DNA joker?
Whilst this is a cool video, it seems to assume you've unlocked all the jokers. I've still not done this, and whilst there is an unlock all, that disables achievements for your profile. I also do not know if the "unlocl all" feature is even supported by the black hole accessibility mod which lets screen readers interface with Balatro so that I, a blind person, can play the game.
I got stencil and copy a joker destroy other jokers in my first shop, x5 x5 instantly
"No, and stop talking" pushed me over the hump to minimize the video and click the Subscribe button.
ha! glad u found it funny :)
Great cover, this has been a great game
Great Vid! I was wondering how you play around skipping blinds and which tags are most effective that are worth skipping in each ante?
I'll generally only skip if it's worth $20+ or if I have a throwback --- seeing shops is rly important to find more jokers, so you should take fights whenever you can!
Yeah i can tell this will help me immensely! Thx🙏🏽
Well done. Great video.
Comment for the engagement ❤ nice work, Autumn!
The wall I am up against right now is trying to win with zodiac. holy cow do I hate that deck I have gone through ante 1 AND 2 without seeing a single joker at times, and when I normally do see jokers is it maybe 3 in the first few antes and they are usually terrible.
Yard intro jumpscare
you get it
@@autumnchiu Doctor.
What are your thoughts on skipping blinds?
usually not worth it unless you see a REALLY good tag, like an econ tag worth $20+. and even then only if you're comfortable with your current jokers
Mfw I buy anti synergy jokers together (Green Joker and Castle)
you get it
Very useful video thank you.
Does the advice to avoid planet cards and use rerolls instead apply to the nebula deck?
good question! with nebula (and all runs w/ telescope), I'll buy planet packs if I'm at a point where i can win fights with high card or pair. the reasoning is that before that point, you'll need better jokers to survive, but once you've entered the high card/pair, you can actually make use out of the planet cards from telescope.
if you're going for something other than pair/high card, you can start opening planet packs when your deck can consistently play your target hand (straights or flushes probably). before that point, buying the packs isn't effective because you're not guaranteed to get value from the planet card, so the $4 would be better spent on a joker.
That makes sense. I always tend to go for flushes with nebula deck indeed. Ill try high card with joker rerolls next time i play, thanks
I tried this and still can’t win
This.
I think I play even worse if I do it like in this video.
Spending more money on tarot cards instead of rerolls gives me better results.
Maybe I'm not good at choosing jokers.
@@DrOgas-qm5js the ONLY times I did win since then, I more skipped blinds when they had negative and polychrome jokers.
Loved this
I just started. I thought Space Joker was the best Joker. If pulled early I can milk 1 style hand and get it leveled up pretty quickly. That said Ive never completed a run so i dunno wdf im talking about.
Well i think the same thing with space Joker but the burn joker is just better
“Complete guide to Balatro” implies “Balatro is about white stake”
I cannot keep up with how fast your talking but thank you😂
Damn, thanks to these tips i managed to increase my modest 0% win rate to an impressive... 0% win rate. Yeah, gotta admit, not very good at this 😅😅😅
Wow this really works great video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
