I think Joker tier lists in Balatro are extraordinarily hard to make and maybe even fundamentally not useful, because (as with all good deck builders) their value in isolation isn't usually what's important, it's their value in certain combos. For Common Jokers in particular, you can sort of divide them into "Great to get in Ante 1 to make sure you survive until Ante 3, but you'll be replacing it by midgame," and "Not that great on its own, but it's common, and it combos really well with Uncommon/Rare Jokers X or Y, or wins you the game with X and Y." I think it's much less useful to try to divide Uncommon and Rare Jokers the same way, because you can't rely on being able to get them in an 8-ante (i.e. not Endless) run; but building towards something that requires a Common Joker when you don't have that Joker yet isn't at all crazy, if you have the economy for a decent number of re-rolls. I don't have any suggestion for how a Tier list could comprehensively take this into account, because the number of combos is too large; but I do think it marginalizes the utility of normal Joker tier-lists .
People beg for tier lists like students asking "how many questions will be on the test?" To which I always ask "what would you do if I said 4? What about if I said 8? How would the answer actually affect your studying? There are approximately 50 minutes worth of problems to solve."

This may be why professor doesn't dislike it as much as others, as he appears fine taking several minutes on even minor decisions. But often times I see people short circuit when they take it and open every pack (even when their economy is struggling) and skip almost every pack. Theoretically I can see it adding value in a run where your econ is sorted enough for you to easily buy every pack and are somehow hurting hard for +mult, but that seems pretty niche to me especially when having enough econ to buy every pack usually means your run will survive almost off planet scaling and deck manip alone. Although now, after actually watching the end sequence of the video I am now confused what his actual opinion on the placement of red card (and green joker I guess) would be lol
You slandering all the scaling +mult is crazy, wtf Is there something I'm missing or are all of those cards (Bus, Supernova, Green Joker) actually that bad? They're been my ride or dies on gold stake recently
Gold stake is probably a big reason for the disparity, since you might be a little more desperate for scoring given the difficulty. All three you mentioned require spending hands to level them up faster, with Green penalizing you for discarding, Supernova forcing you to play the same hand repeatedly, and Bus preventing you from taking advantage of face card synergies like Smiley or Photograph. Compare to Abstract which is +15 for doing the thing you were going to do anyway, which is fill your joker slots. By the time you've got the scaling +mult jokers to far enough past that to matter, there's a good chance you've either won already, or you've run into, idk, Blueprint or something and replaced them. Also every +mult joker in the game is worse if you have xmult that goes before them. Glass and polychrome cards, Bloodstone, Photograph, etc.
Low Xmult compatibility is perhaps one of the greatest weaknesses from all the +mult scalers. And there's that point of prioritizing immediate value over steadily increasing value. Both because you're pretty much always working toward an Xmult and planet cards endgame that will eventually replace them anyway, and since one-shotting blinds offers precious economy you'd miss out on if you're spending all your hands each round.
Coming back to this months later, you are absolutely not wrong. Ride the Bus is one of the most consistent ways people get to C++. Green Joker is one of the cleanest scaling mult jokers in the game. Supernova isn’t the greatest but for pairs and high card it’s perfectly serviceable.
I’m a scholar defender. Great card to build around. I think aces are a good build around card, esp for abandoned deck. They give you the most chips, they have a joker designated specifically for them, they have a spectral card that gives you aces. Pretty consistent gold stake wins when I build around 4oak and 5oak aces. If you have an okay first ante and a half ish, you guarantee getting a 4oak once a round and scholar makes that hand win (On abandoned deck). It’s a common joker so I end up seeing it pretty consistently in the first 3-4 antes. After you have a 4oak w/ scholar you can almost play jokerless style and save slots for econ jokers or jokers you want the sticker of. Most of the other commons don’t have that build around potential, but to be fair, are a lot more versatile. I may be biased though, it is really fun to use…
My main problem with scholar is that there’s just no retrigger effect for aces. They’re pretty solid, but landing right in between sock and buskin and hack makes me rarely want to be focusing on them if you’re strengthening kings (which are obviously insanely strong) or can make them 2s (which are still fib cards but now have hack + wee options)
@byrne1807 sure but as an early game common this lack of synergy isnt damning. The whole thing i like about it is that its pretty good entirely by itself
@@byrne1807 that isn't the problem. Common +chips/mult jokers (maybe aside fortune teller, shoot the moon with suspicious numbers of queens in deck and eggbuckler which have potential to be big enough to matter in A8 high stakes) are supposed to carry you for few first antes before you upgrade enough your hand of choice with planets.
You've mentioned it a couple of times, but the d6 tag, it turns out, is uh, terrible. The bit is that you have to compare rerolling n times from zero to spreading out your rerolls over two shops. So basically to see n+2 shops (you see two shops for free either way so this makes the math easier) costs (n^2+n)/2 with the tag, and n/2^2+n/2+5n without. So you save 5n-n^2/4 bucks. Which peaks at 8 rolls with 24 dollars. But to have that you still need to spend 36 bucks. So it's like an instant economy tag, but you can only spend it on rerolls, and if you wanna maintain full interest you need to have at least 61 bucks already, realistically over 70 cuz, ykno, you're spending money to buy things from the shop. And the economy tag is basically only good cuz it gets your interest off the ground. Skipping blinds is bad cuz you miss shops which are good cuz you can spend. Skips are better, contextually, when you have less money. d6 is never good in these conditions. It's terrible.
why is abstract joker lower than the suit based mult jokers? abstract is essentially a free 15 mult whereas the suit jokers are a lot more volatile and require a flush to get to 15 mult, and the abstract joker can scale with negative jokers (even if it just ends up being +3 or +6)
I was nodding along until square in expelled. I’ve won many high stakes runs with it! I mean I think it’s probably still mid tier at best but still, surprising
At the start if was also thinking superposition shouldn't be in the top tier. Then I thought of how many ace-5 card boosters there are like replaying all 2-5 and +8 for 1,2,3,5 and 8. In abandoned deck it's obviously a must use but in other decks where you have comedian or the other ones I forgot their names it makes an amazing run
Supernova is good for High Card (and Pair) builds, yeah, but playing only High Card is not typically something you should be doing long-term. Assuming you have the support, the advantage of playing High Card is you don't care what cards are in your deck, and you don't care what cards are in your hand. You /can/ be successful even if your deck-building and discard strategies are poor. However, Pluto and Mercury cards are very low yield, on top of an already incredibly low base. High Card doesn't benefit from Tarot Enhancements on your cards. If you're playing only High Card, you need greater than 90% of your scoring to come from Jokers alone. High Card is the thing you get to do when you get a lucky setup. High Card should not be something you're always, or even often, trying to do. If you get Supernova early, you can't actually lean into High Card until you also find a viable +Chips Joker, which is rare among Jokers. Easy enough to do on White Stake, but not as free on Orange and Gold Stake. The scoring requirements on White Stake are low enough that you can win 100% of the time and can win with High Card specifically 100% of the time also. However, on higher stakes, you have a good chance of not finding enough material to survive, scoring wise. Even before you actually lose, you are losing money each round by playing more hands each round. This drain on resources makes it even harder to find more scoring material, as you won't have as much money to reroll for things like xMult Uncommons. And you won't be able to open as many Booster Packs. All scaling +Mult Jokers suffer the same problem. If you don't invest, they don't payout. If you do invest, they just become obsolete later in the run (most commonly by Glass and Steel cards which activate before your +Mult Jokers).
@@drspectred I said I wanted to learn sure enough you taught well! Thank your prof! Totally makes sense, yeah as i am going for stakes beyond gold I am finding I need to adapt more (which is fun)! Thanks again!
I'm at purple(ish) stake with every deck so now Delayed Gratification just pisses me off when I see it, because all that hassle is not worth $4 Banner too is so annoying now. +60 in exchange for not discarding is just trash. +80 would be barely playable. They really did massacre my boy.
I think you’re looking at Chaos wrong; it’s not that the last reroll is free; it’s that you get to look at 2x the number of cards by default. It effectively lets you see 4 shop items over 2 from the get go (and scales with the shop upgrades which are top-tier). Given that runs can really easily be defined by 1 or 2 key jokers, being able to choose from 2x as many for free is huge. The point of common jokers are to keep you alive until you can get the uncommon/rare jokers you need. Chaos exposes you to those jokers far earlier
ive always thought green joker would be more interesting if it were +1 for discards and -1 for hands, that way you get punished for not being good enough instead of for just playing the game
This would make it significantly worse; if you don’t one shot every blind then it’s not going to gain any mult over time I like green joker as it is; you’re sacrificing your economy a bit to consistency scale (and it’s good with jokers like reserved parking)
Bro square is sick if you get it early with a scaling mult joker and other jokers to hold you over while you upgrade them then you replace the other jokers with x3 mult jokers and such. ive lots of high stakes runs with that combo. its obviously unusable late as with most scaling jokers but definitely should be ranked at least "see me after class"

Can someone please tell me why green was expelled? I do love me some full houses from time to time, but high cards and duos are my go-to whenever I attempt challenges and higher stakes. Thus making green a no-brainer choice for base mult. … or was he just trolling?
I've been (definitely not playing on my phone on a bootleg mobile version) playing a lot of balatro and find my self veering off the baron course to see that e13 score dream!
A channel called "balatro university" having so many disgustingly disagreeable takes in this matter is astounding to me. Over half of the best common jokers in the game are in the bottom of the list.
"Bloodstone goes hard without Lusty, Lusty goes hard without Bloodstone" - that means you SHOULD be using BOTH of them if you DO have to happen to have them both.
"I'd like it to be Lustful Joker, but it's Lusty, so get outta here" is an objectively wrong reason to put it to the bottom, ESPECALLY when you remember about Bloodstone. "But it's only a 1:2 chance!" Hello, everyone, "Oops! All 6s!" is here to solve this kind of a problem!
I think delayed gratification needs to be expelled like green joker was. Think of it this way: you're comparing one discard costing you $6 vs one discard costing you 1 mult. Green definitely deserves those honors.
Hot take but from a numbers standpoint, the Golden Joker is better than Egg because Golden gives $4 per round and Egg gives $3 but Egg can synergize well with Dagger, temperance, and Swashbuckler so selling Egg is inefficient and Golden Joker is better for economy.
Temperance is incredibly common, appearing in 1 out of 3 regular Arcana Packs (closer to 1 in 4 for Jumbo and Mega) and appearing rarely in the normal shop queue and from Purple seals. Temperance pays you backward for all the rounds you've been holding the Egg. With one Temperance, the Egg has produced $6 every round, not just the base $3. Factoring in the probability of getting a Temperance (and factoring in interest from money gained by Golden), Egg overtakes Golden in value after after the 5th round, on average, with a full run being 24 rounds total.
diamonds and spades are quite a bit better in the context of the checkered deck and the checkered deck is like decent but rough gem does suck relatively lol
no, but that’s because I assume you play face cards a lot. I play them too, it’s fine. I don’t like bus either. In abandoned deck though, or with a little deck fixing it’s amazing. Red is F tier. Since his requirement to dispute a tier was a charity donation, he was trolling to fish for donos
@@kieran9499 ah, thanks for the context I missed. That does make everything make a little more sense
@kieran9499 Truly commited to be a real university then
2:54 Freaky Sevens mentioned by the doc himself! A big day for r/okaybuddyjimbo
That made me realize that there isn’t any joker that synergizes with sevens. Crazyyyyy
@@thepurestvessel9249 there's the freaky synergy
Huh, it would be really cool if there was a joker to make sevens freaky...
We stay winning 👏👏
they should add sex to balatro
dang superposition went from graduating with honors to expelled
They were caught cheating on their final :(
I see Chad and photograph at the top, I am now a happy man.
The best budget combo to win high stakes!
Photograph is out here being the only Common Joker available at the start to rock xmult.
That's such a huge advantage even with its low compatibility.
You slandering all the scaling +mult is crazy, wtf
Is there something I'm missing or are all of those cards (Bus, Supernova, Green Joker) actually that bad?
You should change the name of See me after class to C’s get degrees and you’re in the wrong class to Summer School
Yeah, I love it as a source of both chips and mult simulataneously. Scaling it is tricky
Scholar is nice only in pair with strength card (same with 8-ball and other 4oak cards (ignore cloud 9 - it is strong without deck manip)
He's finally done it.
11:04 I have a special place in my heart for Halfsie, got my first gold stake win with a three of a kind build
I am a square believer
I actually nearly cheered when you moved Delayed Gratification down, because I've been in pretty close agreement for all placements except that one
on gold stake gold joker and delayed gratification are basically the same except one you dont have to do anything.
Thank you for posting this!! I’ve gotten gold stakes on every deck except for plasma, I’m so close!
plasma deck gold stake can be tough - maybe the second hardest after black stake imo just because the scoring can be very awkward. you got this :)
Not showing the card text is criminal
Polychrome misprint gets a cool looking 3D effect and because of that I usually go for it if I see it firet round with the ghost deck.
I would love to see a playing card tier list. How good is an 8 compared to a 2?
you shouldn't be talking about smashing the jokers that are your students tbh
also dang putting green joker in expelled and redcard in solo is wild
Hes just baiting us honestly
It's terrible.
why is abstract joker lower than the suit based mult jokers? abstract is essentially a free 15 mult whereas the suit jokers are a lot more volatile and require a flush to get to 15 mult, and the abstract joker can scale with negative jokers (even if it just ends up being +3 or +6)
I wish there was a Joker that would let you overflow straights, like 3-2-A-K-Q. Would make Superposition a lot more fun.
I had hoped shortcut might do that, but it doesn't. Still, it does make superposition easier to activate
I feel like lusty Joker is the best of the common suit jokers because of how strong bloodstone can be
I was nodding along until square in expelled. I’ve won many high stakes runs with it!
I mean I think it’s probably still mid tier at best but still, surprising
Putting gold (4/round) below delayed (usually 4/round minus hands used to dig) seems funky to me
Abstract and runner are my personal fave commons.
Wait am I missing something (really want to learn), isn’t supernova incredible for high and pair runs?
I'm at purple(ish) stake with every deck so now Delayed Gratification just pisses me off when I see it, because all that hassle is not worth $4
Banner too is so annoying now.
Chaos exposes you to those jokers far earlier
swashbuckler+egg is a nice economy synergy, but that only leaves 3(or 4 if you voucher boost) joker cards to develop an attack synergy
swashie gives + mult, so that’s some attack
Misprint is like the fist but you don't get to decide if you get the high mult
ive always thought green joker would be more interesting if it were +1 for discards and -1 for hands, that way you get punished for not being good enough instead of for just playing the game
You can discard 1 card 5 times for free 5 mult
This would make it significantly worse; if you don’t one shot every blind then it’s not going to gain any mult over time
I like green joker as it is; you’re sacrificing your economy a bit to consistency scale (and it’s good with jokers like reserved parking)
Square is the second best common chips joker
Crazy that it's only been a few months but damn this list needs a revision. Maybe after the new content from next year's update is all settled in.
Feel free to make your own here: tiermaker.com/create/balatro-joker-tier-list-version-101f-17122176
At the end of the day, Joker decisions should be evaluated in the context they arise. Tier lists are more for entertainment than educational value.
Can someone please tell me why green was expelled? I do love me some full houses from time to time, but high cards and duos are my go-to whenever I attempt challenges and higher stakes. Thus making green a no-brainer choice for base mult.
… or was he just trolling?
Hes was trolling for donos. Same thing for red joker and pooperposition.
I've been (definitely not playing on my phone on a bootleg mobile version) playing a lot of balatro and find my self veering off the baron course to see that e13 score dream!
Might be the only tier list that I'll accept even with my own disagreements because its University backed information
do you consider riffraff a somewhat decent money generator?
Great video!
Maybe have gfx that show what each Joker does
only clicked on this cause of the red card in thumbnail

old to do list is expelled, but i agree with new to do lists placement
Ruined this by doing it with chat.
Factoring in the probability of getting a Temperance (and factoring in interest from money gained by Golden), Egg overtakes Golden in value after after the 5th round, on average, with a full run being 24 rounds total.
diamonds and spades are quite a bit better in the context of the checkered deck and the checkered deck is like decent but rough gem does suck relatively lol
this video is getting expelled
Green joker in expelled is the only one I disagree with
Am i insane or is supernova just a better ride the bus in every way?
no, but that’s because I assume you play face cards a lot. I play them too, it’s fine. I don’t like bus either.
In abandoned deck though, or with a little deck fixing it’s amazing.
However, I also hate supernova cus I tend to play a bunch of different types of hands.
tldr; it heavily depends on how you play.
oh I get it the balatro university

would it be better if runner went to 10 per hand but instead it counted for hands containing straights?
It sure would have been nice to be able to see their descriptions and not just the pictures. I don't have them all memorized.
just memorize them all smh
Where do u put the descriptions, there's hardly any space on the screen as is
he describes the jokers in the video. did u even watch?
@@meetgamit4431 I watched him do the first 3 jokers, and then skipped through the video to see if it was all the same.
Listening to someone read the description once, without being familiar with it already does not help much. Even when watching someone play the game, I have to pause the video and read and re-read the descriptions several times to get an idea of what they do.
I am sure this would be a great video for someone who has played the game enough to be familiar with how they work already, but for someone who has never even seen 75% of them, it is not really all that helpful.
Even if I could remember what they did for a few minutes, by the end of the video, I have already forgotten what 90% of them do, so I have no frame of reference when looking at the completed board.
@@Breadward_MacGluten I thought this channel was going to be noob friendly, but it seems that you are expected to already be an expert to understand what is going on.

So why was Banner nerfed then?
Your avatar should be holographic, not negative.
The problem with Rebate is it losses all value on one of the most important rounds of the game, the last round. That's why Cavendish is better.
If you think red card is good, ask yourself: "why is orange and gold stake much easier now?" Out of all the jokers on this list it is the most anti-synergistic IMO, and it just feels bad.
Square would also be balanced if it started at 16, and would be even funnier. Shame about that :)
