Ken has not tested this :) This has a brand new VC system, and I will be testing it tomorrow so will let you know. But whatever gear you use, you need to learn it and shoot accordingly. As I said, I find Tamron VC amazingly good.
I have the 70-300 VC and it does take a second before the stabilizer "locks on", but so far it hasn't really been a problem for me. And just like Matt says, the stabilizer in it is insane! With steady hands, it is possible to get sharp shots at 1/50s on 300mm on a DX camera (=450mm eqiv). Say about 7/10 of those shots will be sharp in that case.
You Are The Man! I've been waiting to get a good 2.8 lens for my camera (D90). So when I heard Tamron had one on the way. I tried to find out everything I could, to no avail. Until now. Looking forward to seeing more reviews on this and other Tamron lenses in the furure.(Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 VC) Keep up the good work.
It's a full frame lens (its a standard zoom for full frame, as you 18-55mm is for APS-C), so you can use it, but you'll lose wide angle compared to your 18-55mm. But Tamron does have a very good 17-50mm f/2.8 which will be a very good replacement for your 18-55mm.
Appreciate your honesty with a non-Nikon lens Matt....I'm after a 24-70 so will review your test videos. Looks a serious piece of glass I could opt given the price.
Hi Matt ... I'm considering this as an affordable alternative to the Nikon f2.8, but I'd be very interested to hear how the auto-focus performs. I'd be looking at situations such as continuous focusing tracking cars during Motorsport meets. How do you feel this would hold up? (Thanks for the videos, btw :) )
I believe it's for DX and FX Cameras. So yes it works great on both kinds of bodies. "making it a lens at the top of its class whether you use it on a digital APS-C, full-frame, or 35mm SLR camera." - from Tamron website. I'm impressed haven't really looked at 3rd party lenses before.
I could only wish that this lens was less than £1000 GBP over here in the UK. Initial reports on what this lens is like is pretty awesome. I'm a fan of Tamron lenses, having an 18-270, 90mm macro, 180mm macro and 70-200 f2.8 zoom. I'm deeply impressed with them all and they are very capable performers. With Sony though, the VC hardware is inert so that's the only issue I have.
can you say something more about the build quality? is it such a rugged tank of a lens just as the C/N? and is it sealed in any way? at all dustproof or something like that? cause I've had the 28-75/2.8 for some time a couple of years ago and it was very keen on sucking up some little specks of dust. cheers mate!
I have had this lens for almost a month now and I love it with all of my D3200! It will also be very nice on my D800 that I will get in april and I havent used my other lenses a lot since this baby came!
I am thinking of buying this lens for my 650D.. I wanna hear your opinion if you think this would be a good buy for my DSLR... I am shooting Portraits and fashion and anything that actually get's my attention...
Hi Matt great hands on review looking forward to your real world testing. I'am looking for a standard zoom to go with my D7000 but i guess this could be a bit long at the wide end your thoughts would be interesting thanks Graham
Awesome, I'm a Nikon man through and through but would be happy to see this on a Canon. I can't justify the spend on the Nikon 24-70mm for my D90. Considering I'm an amateur, I have the 18-200mm VRII do you think I need the 24-70? I just love the f/2.8!
Hey Matt, would this lens be a good add on to my Tamron 70-300 VC (with maybe later buying the Tamron 10-24) That way i can cover the full 10-300 range, should it be wise? :) Cheers!
I'm almost tempted to sell my nikkor 24-70 and get the tamron version and have extra money left over... Just maybe... 1) if the optics are very close or on par with the nikkor, 2) if the focusing is fast and quiet, and finally 3) the weather sealing is legit. I hope you will check those three in the following videos :) cheers!
I got this lens for my D800! if I had money for the Nikkor version back then I would have it! I also chose the tamron version because of this review since the sigma is cheaper but the bokeh is pretty nasty compared to this!
Hi, great video! I have a cropped sensor camera and I'm really torn between the Canon 17-55mm IS and the Tamron 24-70mm VC, which one would you go for? I'm shooting video btw. Thanks!
haha, in Australia some brands( Including Nikon) are not giving an official RRP at all on many products now - just leaving it to retailers to set the price!
Thanks very much for the great review! I'm concerned about focusing speed/accuracy in low light, so I was hoping to get your opinion on that seeing as you've probably logged more hours with it since your original review... I shoot weddings w/ the 5D mk 3. Cheers, j
Maybe your copy or camera has focusing issues as my Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 focus quickly and accurately in low light. I haven't seen any issues with focus at all. I am truly amazed with this Tamron lens for the price I paid. Most definitely pro quality.
In response to Francis, Matt has had to replace the rubber lining on this lens but he also notes in the showdown conclusion video that it's a rugged lens. Might I add that it is weather resistant too! :D
Got the 1st one which had a known issue with canon 650d (t4i) where it drains all the battery within 48 hours even the camera is turned off. They replaced it another 1 and that too had the same issue. so 2 consecutive bad copies with slow AF & finally i got it exchanged for a canon 24-105 f/4 IS :(
I think it's because it's aimed for full frame than a crop sensor. You can use it, but it wouldn't be 24-70mm. Honestly, I would go with the 17-50, however I can understand that people want good glass or full frame, so they would purchase something like this or similar. It just depends on want you really.
2020 and I just bought one of these in MINT condition. It's still an incredible lens.
Do you use it for video? How’s the auto focus?
Ken has not tested this :) This has a brand new VC system, and I will be testing it tomorrow so will let you know. But whatever gear you use, you need to learn it and shoot accordingly. As I said, I find Tamron VC amazingly good.
Hi - welcome back! Last comment I recall from you, was you saying you didn't like my video and were unsubscribing.

LOVE THIS LENS on my Nikon D750..great all around lens. Thanks for this review!
It's a full frame lens (its a standard zoom for full frame, as you 18-55mm is for APS-C), so you can use it, but you'll lose wide angle compared to your 18-55mm. But Tamron does have a very good 17-50mm f/2.8 which will be a very good replacement for your 18-55mm.
so quick!! hope to see more samples; how quickly it focuses; and several videos with VC active.
Hey, Matt. I gotta say, I love your new signing out. GYGO just rolls off the tongue and means a lot to us photographers.
You are the man, Matt! Good work as always!
Appreciate your honesty with a non-Nikon lens Matt....I'm after a 24-70 so will review your test videos. Looks a serious piece of glass I could opt given the price.
Nice video Matt. Looking towards the rest of the videos about this lens :)
Keep up with the great work, and quality content. :)

manfrotto stile soft shell jacket - i love it.

Love your videos, I think I've watched almost all of them. Thanks for taking the time to make them.

it's all good - happy to test it on the 5D
@valordk yep... expecting velvet packaging and a leather case?
Hi Matt great hands on review looking forward to your real world testing.

haha - welcome back - been a while. No killing please = even if they are zombies.

Hi Matt since you are going to do this on a Canon can you include a comparison with the tamron, nikon and the canon 24 - 70
see the next video I uploaded - I won't be extensively testing the weather sealing - but I mention it in this one.
I have personaly tested this lens and its sharp at f2.8
I recomend this 2nd to oem.
sure - depends if you are thinking about re-selling, or shooting!
Matt, can you tell me the manufacturer of your jacket, please. I think you did a review of it some time ago. Thanks!
Hi, nice reviews! What about the focus ring, seems a bit small for video? Use with follow focus?
Hey Matt, would this lens be a good add on to my Tamron 70-300 VC (with maybe later buying the Tamron 10-24)
That way i can cover the full 10-300 range, should it be wise? :)
Cheers!
Matt, I currently have an 18-55mm 3.5-5.6G & 35mm 1.8G. How does this compare to those lenses? Would it be a complimentary lens or just a filler lens?
Matt please do a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 vs that Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 head to head. I want to see the effect of the vibration reduction. I have a 28-75mm.
of course I will be testing on a 5D very soon.
I'm almost tempted to sell my nikkor 24-70 and get the tamron version and have extra money left over... I got this lens for my D800!
if I had money for the Nikkor version back then I would have it!
I also chose the tamron version because of this review since the sigma is cheaper but the bokeh is pretty nasty compared to this!
Is there any chance you could get your hands on the tamron and/or sigma 17-50? cheers!
Hi Matt, is the Nikon mount compatible with the Nikon D5100?
Hi, great video! I have a cropped sensor camera and I'm really torn between the Canon 17-55mm IS and the Tamron 24-70mm VC, which one would you go for? I'm shooting video btw. Thanks!
Will this be a great lens for the D600? This might be my first DSLR and this lens seems to be the right fit. Thanks, great vids!
haha, in Australia some brands( Including Nikon) are not giving an official RRP at all on many products now - just leaving it to retailers to set the price!
I have the Tamron 24-70 VC for Nikon and shoot it on a Nikon D750. If the light is not good, the fotos turn out soft!
I have found the same issue with this lens. If you stop it down to f/4 it becomes very sharp, but image quality is slightly dissapointing at 2.8.
how would the build compare to the 18-270? a heck lot better or bout the same?
Matt already has a review of the Tamron 70-200 f2.8.
What about the rubber focus ring,.. does it look like it will eventually hang off the lens in a couple of months ?
Thanks very much for the great review!
I'm concerned about focusing speed/accuracy in low light, so I was hoping to get your opinion on that seeing as you've probably logged more hours with it since your original review...
I shoot weddings w/ the 5D mk 3.
Cheers, j
I assume the Sony mount would sell for less since the image stabilization is done in the camera body thus would not need the VC?
Maybe your copy or camera has focusing issues as my Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 focus quickly and accurately in low light. I haven't seen any issues with focus at all. I am truly amazed with this Tamron lens for the price I paid. Most definitely pro quality.
Hi matt, do you encounter blurry images with this lens at high shutter speeds (1/100 and up) with vc on?
Ahh been waiting on this lens! But I'm not too sure of third party stuff after I bought a sigma 24mm the focusing was horrible always back focused.
looks like a lovely lens big time! want it a lot!
IF - and I am not sure - IF I can get a hold of the canon 24-70.
would you recommend yiur lens or the Canon 24-70 2.8 non is for low light wedding and event
haven't seen the pricing for sony.
yes, fully
Would the imagine stabilization still work if I used the lens on a Sony A7s, given a specific adapter? Thanks!
When will be doing the test shot for this :)?
Should I get this or the 24-105 f4L is? L Build quality is amazing but I want that 2.8 and VC please help!
In response to Francis, Matt has had to replace the rubber lining on this lens but he also notes in the showdown conclusion video that it's a rugged lens. Might I add that it is weather resistant too! :D

Are you sure you meant the 70-300mm which blew you away or is it the 70-200mm which is a 2.8 as well?
Hl
D70 camera with Canon
Do you have a benefit Propagation 24-70
And if it does not work what are the appropriate lens for my camera type
Does this lens have a manual overide focus? The m/a mode on nikon
How much will be the price of it? ...
Does anyone have a thought of Tamron 17-55mm 2.8 VC? is it good?
Thanks from Portugal
Thanks Matt great video!
cheers!
How do I order through your link?
hi matt thanks for the guidline thanks
sigmas 24-70 has a filter thread of 82mm as well
It's 2018. Is this lens still a viable option compared to the Sigma 24-105 Art?
Tom D yes
Is this lens worth the purchase. Im debating between this and Nikons 24-70
Aaron Favors I'd push you towards Tamron. It's cheaper and at least as good if not better.
does it feel plasticy?
thanks
it is made of plastic - i said it feels good and best built tamron i have tested.
Just won a bid on Ebay for this Lens!! IN THE MAIL... :D Thanks for the review.
Nice job, as usual :)
ASAP
my tamron 24-70mm has a play on its zoom ring is it normal?
@lcko fake?
How would this lens fare on an D7100?
This lens would be overkill for a d7100.... you would be better with a sigma 17-50 or tamron 17-50
I think it's because it's aimed for full frame than a crop sensor. You can use it, but it wouldn't be 24-70mm. Honestly, I would go with the 17-50, however I can understand that people want good glass or full frame, so they would purchase something like this or similar. It just depends on want you really.
***** It's a lens that's not very wide and not very long in a crop frame sensor. 17-50 costs a third of this lens, and you have a very cool wide angle
Thanks for the advice
i love your videos :D
can i use this and 70-200 2.8 vc on my nikon d5200???
Prakhar Sharma You can, but for a DX camera there are better options. Try the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 instead
you can override at any time.
Is it good for DX camera?
Rosser Pablo No, 24mm is not very wide on DX cameras. Try the 17-50mm f/2.8 instead.
no
now we want a 3 way shoot out, nikons sigma and tamron!
around $1300 vs 1900 for nikon
huh?
Your in Narwee :-)
if you want 2.8 and VC... you already know the answer.
This lens is not compatible to the 100% with the Mark III 5d, you can't use the 61 AF points, just the center, returned mine today
can i buy ur jacket somewhere?
RRP US$1299
this lens for Nikon is not 77mm it is 82mm as well
MUUUUUUCH better.
This lens is actually better than way overpriced Nikon version.
RRP $1299
Who do I have to kill to get one?
Smart Tamron, sending that"Nikon"guy a canon mount lens for review, LOL
Good in 2020?
