Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this video!! It was breaking my heart to cut back my 2 stem Jade plant to the bark but after seeing your video it encouraged me so much that I cut mine back! It was so encouraging that if you where willing to risk a 20 year old tree I could take a risk with my tiny little plant!☺️
Mine is only two and a half years old and looks big, strong and full of leaves, with two thick central trunks. I've never pruned it. It gets morning sunlight and is very healthy!
Greetings from England! Thankyou for posting your hard pruned Jade Plant after 7 months. I pruned my old plant, a week ago, and I have set some of the leaves, which are now producing tine Jade Plants.
I can't imagine pruning such a magnificent plant back to a stump! I really don't understand why you trimmed the roots. Could use some explanation. This seems brutal. Like, it will take five years for it to look normal again.
Thanks a lot for this. I have a question for you. after the hard pruning, what is advisable. Exposing the plant to direct summer sunlight or to leave in indoors with minimal / indirect sunlight.
Amazing how different growth gets in different environment. I got a 30 year old Jade plant and it about as thick as this but healthy (partly due to that i was not repotted for a good 15 years or so lol) but also our long dark winters in Sweden. Has to be indoors most of time too. Umm by the way, maybe you should invest in a better knife with longer blade, looks dangerous too 😉😊
Mine is 6years old and allmost that big. You have enough light for your plant? And pls take a longer knife, it's better for the plant to just cute once 😊😊
@@EatwellFarm you should prune that one new branch so the plant will not continue to grow it and switch to the other one (it always have two "buds"-sometimes a plant just needs to be "told" what to grow. Wait until new pair of leaves show up and then just pinch it with nails or smth. The plant will grow a new branch. And then, when you will decide its time for an old branch to grow again (better if it will be already little lignified-cut it, leaving 4-5 pair of leaves (depends on where you want new branches to grow). And give the tree some good lighting.

Video molto interessante! Ho sul balcone questa pianta un po' trascurata e mi piacerebbe trasformarla in bonsai. per favore puoi aggiungere delle informazioni come il tipo di terriccio usato, quale filo di ferro usare ed altro... grazie!
I think you can plant them to grow the tree further. I will find out, because I just did this with a large jade plant that I cut back heavily, including one big main limb. I put that limb in water with growth enhancer for a few days, and then planted it. So far it seems to be fine. Time will tell!
In the Video, I cut the root because I want to make it small to fit in the pot and also to remove some dead roots out. But you can cut the root again when the roots bound (run out of space for the roots to go).

Maybe overwatering? Check the soil. Put your finger in the soil to the first knuckle, if you can't because it's too compact, it needs repotting. If your finger comes out feeling damp, don't water it. If it comes out feeling dry, water it
You will cut the roots only 2 reasons. first, when you want to keep them small as Bonsai Tree then you trim the roots to make it fit in the small pot. second, when the root bound (run out of space for the roots to go) then you trim them to keep the plant survive and continue to grow. Quick question. Is this essential (cinnamon power or candle wax) or can you hard prune without the aforementioned? Building up the courage to chop mine up but want to ensure it doesn't back fire. I am doing research well ahead of time looking to prune early next spring if that is the best time to do so.
would love to see an update on how this is looking one year later- any pics to share? ❤
There is one "7 months later" on the channel!
Thanks for sharing. You did some heavy root pruning which taught me something. Jades are so hardy and a pleasure to work on..

Its surprising how few feeder roots it seemed to have.

They love direct sunlight, just leave it in direct sunlight! After a week you should see the new growth to form.

Just prune the top and it will branch :)

Can a plant survive only in sand? Or what kind of soil is that which look like a sand?
It can survive in sand if it has fertiliser. The leaves won't grow as big (which is a goal in bonsai)
potting mix?
В какой супстракт высаживаете ,а срезы чем обрабатываете?
Where can i get that type of pot?
The way this dude uses that knife lol
Must have a heart of stone to make such a cut 😅
I'm confused is that a Crassula Ovata or Portulacaria Afra?
Ok I tried my best to look closely at the leaves and I think I can see the jade type leaves. 😂
What did you do with the parts you cut off?
I think you can plant them to grow the tree further. I will find out, because I just did this with a large jade plant that I cut back heavily, including one big main limb. I put that limb in water with growth enhancer for a few days, and then planted it. So far it seems to be fine. Time will tell!
Let them dry out about 2-3 days then plant them in well-Draining soil to make another plants!
@@superbonsai7537 thank you so much
Does trimming the roots help with growth or just a choice you made for the pot?
any ideas? i would like to know that as well
I have always heard that trimming the roots will slow growth. I believe he did this to make the plant small enough to fit the pot
As I know usually they prune the root trying to give a balance between roots and leaves and also for the pot
In the Video, I cut the root because I want to make it small to fit in the pot and also to remove some dead roots out. But you can cut the root again when the roots bound (run out of space for the roots to go).
Oh wow so cool
Do you replant the cut branches?
They could be rooted yes.
Why?
That's not 20 years old unless it's light starved..
Was ist das für Substrat?????👍😉
Мило получилось
All Jades can be cut back , but yours needs more light and fertilizer , mine is much bigger all around and it's 3years old.
I think OP is growing bonsai so deliberately keeping it compact
Pudge, the butcher 😂..
I tried the same before, but the overall shape doesn't look balanced, or good looking
Needs further pruning then. Overtime it will develop into a shape, it's not instant
Ok so my "just a little off the top" pruning method can't kill my jade lol. Yours was decapitated and it still lived!

that would be tough to do, after 20 years just chopping it down.
