Another winner... thanks!
Tried adding notes and arrows to a PDF. Works great so far
thank you, this is actually very helpful. before your video, I was very frustrated with the tool
Thank you very much
Preview is excellent and with only a little bit of work could solve most image editing needs. I do a lot of basic editing in Preview even knocking up quickie thumbnails and covers in it. The colour palette is a quick way to get good clean images in minutes. I also archive a lot of images to heic format (with alpha) which saves vast amounts of drive space.
It also demonstrates what a Byzantine bureaucracy Apple is. The image editing tools in Preview are similar but _not the same_ as the tools in Pages/Numbers/Keynote and Photos which shows the teams _don't communicate_ and don't share code, as much as that would make sense and save a lot of duplication.
Preview is excellent. The "Markup Tools" are actually shared code between these apps. But different apps set them up differently, which is why they vary in functionality between Mail, Quick Look, Preview/Images, Preview/PDF, Photos, etc.
@@macmost My idea of a good System wide editor would be that in any shared App it would use Preview and save the result locally. Which would encourage Apple to fix all the UI inconsistencies and fill in the missing bits.
btw Preview used to work better with the older iWork Apps copying any iWork objects and switching to Preview > New would create a neat vector pdf file. Now it rasterises the objects to low res bitmaps.
Actually I was looking for instructions on how to put one object under another above it thus giving the text in the square a 'higher hierarchy' hence not covering the actual text but hey, I've learnt a lot of useful stuff from this video that I didn't know. I've liked and subscribed of course.
Great 👍🏼
Very Good Video..
bro I don't know your name but you are the best you have help me in my time of need I thank you so much I could give you a hug keep doing your thang boss

I am needing to change the color of some PNG files for graphics to be put on shirts. So far it seems that using preview for this is working out well, and when I upload the edited png onto the mock-ups on the printing site, it says the image is good quality and from what I can tell will print fine. But after trying to figure out other ways to change the color (I have zero graphic design experience lol), doing it in preview seems to simple or too good to be true - so I want to be sure, is there any reason that changing the color of PNGs using preview would distort the quality of the file or anything like that? Thanks so much for this video and your help!
Hard to say without seeing the results. If you are spending the money to get shirts printed, I would find someone with some graphics experience to help you with it.
Thank you Gary. Have you made a video on making memes with preview?
Some of this video may help you: ruclips.net/video/NAlYWuHxhIM/видео.html
Great ....
Nice Tutorial, Can you save the settings and apply to another Image ( adjust color ) ?
Not in Preview, no. You can do that in Photos though.
How do you rotate the image in small increments to make the horizon level?
There's nothing for that in Preview. Is this image in the Photos app? If so, you've got a tool for that in there.
great video, how do I straighten up a image ? thank you
There's no rotation tool in Preview. There is one in Photos though.
Can Preview be used with Apple Photos to make local adjustments (i.e. exposure, contrast, etc) using the selection tools?
What do you mean by "local?" Do you mean selecting an area of the photo and only adjusting that area? No. You'll need an app like Pixelmator Pro, Affinity Photo, Photoshop, etc to do that.
@@macmost Yes, that is what I meant. Thanks for the clarification. Excellent video.
how do u rotate without using two fingers (not 90 degrees but the way you did on 6:24) do you know keyboard shortkey?
I don't think there is any way except using a trackpad.
Preview EXIF lists focus distance. Is this in feet, yards, or meters?
Do you mean Focal Length? Focal Length is always in millimeters. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focal_length
My mac doesn’t have an adjust size option in the toolbar or anywhere in preview 😩 probably because it’s a different generation than yours 😑 but what’s the easiest way for me to resize a .JPEG photo in this situation? Thanks in advance
What version of macOS do you have? Do you see Adjust Size listed in the Tools menu?
Good video but is there a way of doing permanent change's when is pdf file or does it only perminantly save changes in jpeg files?
Yes, it saves the changes in the PDF. Test it out and see.
on the video minute:6:20, how can I rotate if I don't have a trackpad?
You can't. This is one case where a function only works with a Trackpad, not a mouse.
How do I use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and zoom out?
Unless your mouse drivers have an option to do that, you can't.
I have a lot of JPG images I've downloaded from various websites. When I make a change, such as flip horizontal, I get a message: "This document can be duplicated to a format that supports editing." I have the option to choose "Convert to TIFF" or "Undo Changes". This does not happen on every JPG file.
And while converting to TIFF solves the issue for that particular image, it gets old when I have to keep doing it over and over.
Anybody know how to solve this? I have looked around on Google and RUclips but found nothing.
I have privileges set to read and right and I'm signed in as admin.
It probably depends on the type of jpeg the image is. Usually you should choose PNG, not TIFF though. I'd try doing it with a third-party image editing app instead, like Pixelmator Pro or Acorn. It is probably that Preview can only save in certain types of jpeg formats and so if an image is one that it doesn't save in, it has to convert it. I'd still export in jpeg though as a TIFF file would be huge. A PNG still better, but probably not what you want.
How do i delete the arrows and edits on my image?
Select them and delete. Or use Undo. Once you save it though, it is permanent.
Can you fill in a deleted part of a background with another part of the background?
Yes. You would delete the portion, leaving a hole. Then select all and copy. Then open up the other image you want to use (or a copy of it) and paste the one with the hole over it. You can do it in Preview, but it is much easier in a multi-layer editing tool like Pixelmator Pro, Photoshop, etc.
How do you out speech bubbles and other shapes behind the image, as the image doesn't allow me to do this.
Not sure what you mean. Put them behind the image? How so?
What is the easiest way to insert an image onto a background photo using preview on mac
Select the part of the image you want from the first image, and then Paste it onto the second image. ruclips.net/video/hRNToJv78g0/видео.html
is there an option to insert an image? thanks
You can paste another image into an image you are working on in Preview, yes.
how about if i want to erase something in the image ? like writings
In an image, you can mark it up and put a rectangle or other shape over something you want to "erase."
Hi. Thank you for a great video. I am new to macbooks and am struggling to find a way to do something I could have done so easily on my PC. If I have an image, say Apple's logo and I want to change the entire color of the logo itself to say green, how can I do that. They called it colour fill in Windows. I know how colour picker words, but can't figure out how to apply the colour chose to a certain part of an image. Windows would normally change everything that is a specific colour and which is joined to each other to that new colour chosen. In other words, the Apple would have changed colour, but not the leaf above the apple, because there is another colour seperating the two from each other.
To do that in Windows, you have to use an app. Which app did you use? Likewise, you can do it with an app on a Mac, like Acorn, Pixelmator Pro, Seashore, Photoshop, etc. Preview doesn't do pixel editing so you can't do it with Preview.
@@macmost Thank you for replying so quickly. I can't remember, it's been a year that I've been with Macbook. Is there any free apps to do such things with? Photoshop is ridiculous for now and then purpose I want it for. I don't mind paying a reasonable amount once off, but all these guys want huge monthly/annual fees
@@marthunisoosthuizen5429 Photoshop will be the most expensive. Pixelmatopr and Acorn are reasonable. Seashore is free.
@@macmost Thank you
Thanks bunches. I cannot seem to remember where the video on how to create a short cut to the vaccine card ( I used the shot emoji) is located. I did mine and I have forgotten how to do one for a friend. It this day and age, it will become more important to have such or we will not be able to visit place, buy, or sell anything.

@@macmost Thanks again
my 'adjust colour' is greyed out - any one know how to fix this? thanks!
Are you viewing an image? That option is for images, not PDFs.
How do I insert an image into an image, and rescale the inserted image without preserving the aspect ratio of the inserted image?
Not sure you'll be able to do that satisfactorily in Preview. You'll probably want to use an image editing app for that (Photoshop, Pixelmator, Acorn, etc).
Gary I tried to use one of your videos that talks about creating a clipboard in preview to print some passport pics. I resized the original(to 2 by 2 inches) and copied a few of the same 2 by 2 image to the clipboard and printed it but it seems it only prints in PDF quality. I had to go back and use photoshop as usual to do the job and get high quality passport pics. Is there any other way I could have done this using preview? I set the resolution to 600 as I do with photoshop too. thanks!
Not sure what you mean. "PDF quality" could be anything. What do you mean by "creating a clipboard in preview" also, that I don't understand. What did you do exactly?
@@macmost I don't know which one of your videos it was but you did a workaround to create a canvas by doing a copy of original pic and then "new from clipboard". I did that to resize my original picture and then copy a couple of my resized pic to this "canvas" then print it. The print quality was low. Don't bother if it takes your time. not important. Just thought use it to create passport pics quickly. Thanks!
@@paulcamalin5236 My guess is that these have different pixel sizes. Not sure why you are pasting one pic on top of the other for this.
no I put them side by side on the canvas. I chose 600 as resolution. same as with photoshop. I was just trying to print some passport pics. If you have an idea how to do it with the preview edit or pages in high quality let us know. thanks!
@@paulcamalin5236 It all comes down to the resolution of the photo you are inserting vs the resolution of the canvas you are inserting it into.
Great Preview preview but where is preview or its equivalent on an iPad?
There is no Preview on the iPad. You can preview many files in the Files app, and use third-party apps to edit images, etc.
I can't remove a Preview phantom app
Sorry, I don't know what you mean by a "Preview phantom app."
We’re working with some photos we are getting printed in a book and they need to be 300 ppi. They are at 72. Can that just be changed by selecting the 72 and changing it to 300?
Basically, yes. ppi (dpi) is just a number. A 3000x2000 image is 3000x2000 whether it is 72 dpi, 300 dpi, or anything else. Just put the image in the document and don't worry about that number.
@@macmost The company we’re working with requires it be 300. If I change it do I need to just uncheck resample size? Does MB have anything to do with it?
@@toyhuntermike1564 Then just change it to meet their nonsensical requirement. Don't resample. It should be exactly the same file size because you really aren't changing anything.
Excellent. Question about resolution: When you D/L a .jpg photo that opens in Preview, if you increase the pixels under Adjust Size, say from 72 to 144, what happens? Will this double the actual resolution -- that is, make the pic look twice as sharp? Or is real resolution always limited to what the original photo has, say 72 pixels in this case? This ? is analogous to a taking a D/L song file, typically 320 kbps, and converting that to a WAV file. The result will be a much larger file that now identifies as WAV, but an Apple Genius told me that it won't actually sound any better, because conversion can't ever overcome the "resolution" limits of the original 320 .mp3 -- as opposed to, say, starting with a FLAC file, in which case conversion to WAV (for iTunes) WILL sound better than any .mp3 of the same song. Is this also true of photos in general?
You are probably referring to DPI (dots per inch) which is a printing thing. It doesn't really matter for the image and for viewing it on the screen. A 4000x3000-pixel image is going to be 4000x3000 no matter if it is 72 or 144 dpi.
@@macmost Thanks, Gary. Your vids are terrific and move quickly. In PREVIEW, I've been using the Sketch tool, basically a paintbrush, to remove unwanted text and objects thru in-painting. But this tool seems to have a mind of its own. Without my selecting arrow or curve etc, the brush will automatically turn into an arrow, a line, a curve or change the boundary, at which point I have to delete that work session and start over. Happens constantly. Have you ever noticed this, and is there a way to stop it?
@@issadad Sounds like you use it more often that I do. Play around with it to see if you can get it to work better. That's all I would do.
@@macmost Fair enough. I should be using an "eraser" anyway. Not sure if Photos has a good one, do you have one you like?
@@issadad Not sure what you mean. There's the retouch tool.
Gary, if I add text or other images to a photo in Preview and save it, they are permanent. Is there a way that I can add text or other images to a photo that is editable later on?
Not in Preview with images, since they are just saved as regular images. If you want something like that, you'll need to switch to an app that saves in its own multi-layer format like Pixelmator Pro, Adobe Photoshop, etc.
@@macmost Thank you. I have Pixelmator Pro. I will give it a try.
How to remove text box in a photo on macbook preview?
I was clicking on various tools. The text box came up and now I'm stuck with it in the image. Searched all over & no correction found yet. Trying to prevent having to dig out the Ext. HD and find the image again. Why would Apple make App tools like this? My PS5 is on my old laptop.
It sounds like you edited the image and saved it as an image. That's the image now. Use your Time Machine backup to restore it to the previous version.
can't use my colour adjust. idk why?
Din't realise preview was so full of features for a basic program
but there is no back option
I copied some folders with photos from Onedrive to a pictures library on my mac. Some of the folders I can open all of the images with preview. In other folders that I copied over I can’t open the images with preview, I get an error message about not have permission. ‘The file “IMG_0001.JPG’ couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it’. I have tried to change the permission at both the image level and folder level a number of times, but nothing seems to work. Why can I view some of the folders and not others. I copied them the same way.
Are you sure you are changing the permissions to the right thing? Should be read and write for your user account. If so, then it is likely that something wrong with those files and it isn't a permissions problem at all. Maybe try copying them again?
@@macmost Ok thanks. …. Will keep trying ……
I'd like to put a picture of an award I won for a costume I made "inside" the photo of the costume. Should I use preview? What steps should I use?
You just want to combine images? Open both in Preview, copy one, paste into the other, position and size.
@@macmost Thanks!
Why is my Preview different? I have the latest I think, but I only get one sketch pen which only does straight line etc, with the fountain pen tip. Help please!

In the Finder? Usually if you have the Finder set to list view, you would use the down arrow.
@@macmost when using preview to view say 100+ photos in a folder, how to use arrow keys to move to viewing the next photo or back, then forwards again if wanted. Photos are in folder on server, not imported into Mac photos app. Computer I am using is connected to server. Thnx
