Wow what a fabulous tutorial. I have been trying to get my head around this for ages and in a matter of 12 minutes you’ve not only explained it, but actually demonstrated how to use it in the sort of way I would use them. Thank you so so much Gary, you are the BEST 😁. Please keep up the excellent work.
Hey Gary: You did a great job with this instructional video. The way you provided succinct examples so smoothly aligned with your verbal explanations shows a mastery of editing.
Thank you for showing this on apps.... I use preview to create transparent images. Just asking why you didn't mention that as an option... is preview not as good as apps?
As always, very nice video Gary! But I am wondering why you didn't show how to create transparent image using the Mac's default app Preview. We can do this in Preview > Markup > Instant Alpha.
Sadly, the current version of Preview does a poor job of this. It works if you cut out the image manually, but the other tools only get it right if the image has a very well-defined background. And if you do it manually there is no way to add/subtract from the selection which makes it more difficult.
Gary, is there a way to open a PNG or other file type so that it is transparent to desktop- like a floating image that has a hole cut out and will show the desktop beneath it?
i want to write text onto pic using preview. i am looking for a sort of transparent effect wherein the image behind the text is not changed. is there a procedure for doing this?
If unchecked, then any transparent area is just filled in with the background color, usually white or block pixels. If checked, then transparent areas remain transparent.
Hello. I am trying to place a background image on a Pages template but I would need to make the image itself more transparent than it is, as to not cover the writing that would go on top. So far, I have not been able to do so. Is it possible? If so, how? Thanks.
Depends on the specifics. For instance, if it is black text at the top, you could place a white box in-between the background image and the text, then set it to 50% opacity or whatever works to create a lighter background. Or, you could make the text white. Or you could have black text but add a shadow or outline to the text to make it stand out. Lots of options.
Very clear (and best I have seen ) description of layers used to produce colors and image backgrounds! Thank you again, Gary!

Couldn’t have said it better myself, Gary has a real talent in explaining things in such a clear, simple and concrete way.
Thanks Gary. Your videos are addictive haha

Knew about that, but Thank You!!💐
Thanks Gary. Why doesn’t the Desktop thumbnail respect the transparent pixels and is there a way to make it do so?
You mean the icon for the file? I suppose it is to prevent people from accidentally creating invisible icons and such.
@@macmost yes, the icon. So it’s a feature, not a bug?
@@eyeojo Neither. Icons just aren't 32-bit transparent images.
Another: I did not know that topic. Thanks.
Very informative 👍

Not really. You'd need to be viewing it in an app that has that as a feature of its windows. What is it you are trying to DO?

So what does the preserve alpha button/box do? Especially to the edges of an image?

Hey do u or anyone know how to use custom made ringtones for WhatsApp notifications?
Sorry, no I don't.
Ok, if you don't mention it, Preview is not a valid option via Instant Alpha. 😉
