The contrast is hilarious. They know how elitist and self-important many prog-rock/metal fans can get, and they keep trolling the fuck outta them with every new video. 😂
people who get into it later or get led on by has-beens forget that it was always 'take the music seriously, but don't take yourself seriously'. like, you notice how nobody worth a shit is ever arguing if something has a high enough bpm or not enough blast beats?
Saw them live last year. They bring every bit of that candor and selflessness onto the stage with them. At the same time, it still felt like some dudes playing music they love and sharing that love with the crowd. In short: they rock!
Evan Davidson Saw them live the other day in Ohio. I wasn't much of a fan prior but they are pretty enjoyable. Also, Primus was kinda underwhelming because half the show was playing through The Desaturating Seven, which felt like a lot of filler. So, if you liked their newest stuff you'll be cool but if you hold your breath for the og Primus hits, you may be a bit disappointed. Overall, pretty fun and not bad for my second concert ever.

The frustrated bald guy, the hippie chick, the angry punk, the businesswoman in her power suit, the almost involuntary seduction of the older punk guy. Everything is played perfectly. You FEEL something for each of these lunatics.
The band never has any say in their music videos. They said they want their videos to be funny and memorable and not really reflect their music, because they get really serious writing each song. They don't want to be seen as pretentious prog-musicians. The videos are usually directed by their director friends and most of them are from that "adult swim"-type indie circle. I know you guys are joking but I just wanted to point that out.

I can't help but admire the balance Mastodon strikes between taking their music very seriously and being as carefree as they want with their music videos. It is evident in their interviews that these dudes are just as hilarious as they are class act musicians. Serious music with serious music videos can be bleak. I love their humor.

although they're not my favorite, mastodon is the best metal band nowadays with a unique style. They are so inventive. They are technical and still emotive, they can sound demonic and angelical, underground and mainstream. Their videos can be serious or hilarious. Brann's clean vocals are amazing, their lyrics are amazing too. I love them.
