  • DISCUS DRILL:
Sweep around Cone to Power - Initiate:
I have my athletes do a lot of drills without implements to focus on the movement, rhythm and positions without worrying about distance all the time.
Using a cone to help the athlete with widening the right leg sweep before entry is an easy way to improve the overall throw.
I tend to have athlete's 'initiate' the right foot or hip turn at Power instead of just stopping at POWER POSITION. I don't like the idea of large sets of drills where the athlete stops at power position. We want the hip to be constantly turning the throw at power position, we don't want to train it to stop.
    Thanks Sam

This is a VERY good example of being flexible while having strength through the FULL range of motion.

Rotate more on you left foot out of the back and turn your hips more. Swing your right foot like it was attached to a rope. You're looking for angular momentum not a run across the circle. you want the spin out of the back to accelerate your middle phase. Jumping up like that takes time and while it's not much it all adds up. It also breaks the angular momentum and basically nullifies your spin out of the back. The object of the game is to get across the circle as smooth and as fast as you can while maintaining a good power position.
I know this is a drill but don't ignore the left arm out of the back.
    Good luck.

The right leg should be going DOWN, not up! Go watch Malachowski.

Do you teach her to drive up like that? Or do you believe that to be a technical flaw?

+ThrowinBombs80 Teaching that drive specifically for rotational Shot Put...its certainly a little exaggerated here in this drill. Its a bit of a holdover from shot put training and should be a bit more subdued for discus.
