Jekyll: Leave me alone, please Hyde: No, you can wait, I’m gonna be on the cover of a fashion magazine Jekyll: It’s literally been three hours please just leave. *cries*
Oh to be a Victorian-era man angrily duetting my reflection who smirks and leans through the glass gently caressing my face and tilting my head upwards to taunt me
The idea of Hyde being seductive somewhat fits with his character. Hyde represents what Jekyll keeps hidden inside himself. Jekyll is a good man who occasionally does shameful things, while Hyde is the man without inhibition, without guilt. The man Jekyll tries to hide.
So hear me out: a version of Jekyll and Hyde where you get identical twins to play the two leads. Whenever one transforms into the other onstage, there’s flashing lights allowing one to go on and another to go off. Then in this song, at the you will never get away from me, the Hyde actor (after mimicking the Jekyll actor perfectly) steps through the mirror and begins to converse with him face to face. Anyone, thoughts?
A highschool actually did this, I can't find the actual video, but it has been done. For Confrontation, they basically turned the internal conflict into a full on fight scene between Jekyll and Hyde
My favorite part of the whole song is when Hyde says “they’ll never be able to separate Jekyll from Hyde”. Then you think about it and you’re like “damn, he’s right. The two are forever connected”
@@jasonhenry8067 well if you think about it, Hyde was always there. Even before Jekyll made the serum, Hyde was there to some extent. The serum just unleashed what was there laying dormant(?)
@@shmoop6496 you’re right. In the book, Jekyll puts on the serum to change his appearance and unleash a deeper side of him. Although Hyde does kind of gain a different personality later, he’s just Jekyll with a different look.
The seductive approach of Hyde, almost like he's trying to trap Jekyll in the taboo of removing his inhibitions. He moves like a gothic demon, grasping at his mind and tearing him apart. This will always be the best song of the series and this series you've drawn shall always be the best introduction to a musical for me.
*Exactly.* Honestly, the reason I come to these things is to see how people portray Hyde. This one’s the best yet, since it kinda gives off a lust feeling in the beginning when Hyde shows up. Also, the fact you describe him as a demon is just- w o w. .O.
Cause that is what Hyde is, he is Jekyll’s desires that go against the prim and proper Victorian gentlemen. Other than being young he actually doesn’t physically transform like in the classic movies. People said he had a deformity but were never sure because he was evil and desire unleashed when he was just a younger wilder Jekyll that wore Dirty suits. So this version of Hyde is probably the most accurate we can get. Just got to get Jekyll 20 years older.
@@RavenSutcliffe I mean, it was mentioned that it was as if he had a deformity or sth like that but no one could tell what it was so I guess it was not a physical deformity but the evil that the people could sense.
@@anastasianicolaenco4476 Not exactly a deformity. They mentioned it seemed something wasn't quite right with him, that he was scary but you couldn't pinpoint why, that you got a sense of something distorted on someone who otherwise "looked normal, if a bit uncouth" and that you couldn't really look in his eyes. He's supposed to give off a creepy evil vibe, not to be Quasimodo *side-eyes Hasselhoff's stage costume really hard*
Blue Sapphire you can’t run or hide from the you inside of you, they know ALL your secrets, your wants and desires...to bad sometimes you can’t survive yourself
@@linkenjust938 well, not exactly, in the song No One Must Ever Know it kind of reflects the book in that Jekyll and Hyde are hinted to really be the same person. But because there are differences Jekyll has convinced himself that he is not guilty of Hyde's crimes and that he is not part of Hyde's perversion
Franchesca Mia which is basically what DID is. They have the same body but they aren’t the same person, hint as to why Jekyll doesn’t want to be perceived as what Hyde does and is
@@linkenjust938 I think knowing the book is messing with how I see the musical, but they are the same person. Hyde is everything Jekyll already was, but didn't want to admit to being.
I think this is one of the best villain songs ever. He’s the protagonist and the antagonist at the same time. Also the man who plays the character has one side of his face like Hyde and the other like Jekyll and goes back from each side of himself. It’s truly haunting and sends chills down my spine.
Likely it was David Hasselhoff. He’s an absolutely brilliant actor and was absolutely brilliant in this role. I feel like it was literally made for him. I also think it’s one of the best villain songs! It’s so powerful
@@linnykins4169 This version was song by Anthony Warlow. Honestly David Hasselhoff dosnt hold a candle to Warlow from what I've seen of the two singing this . Though that might be because I think Warlow was able to do 1 take for Jekyll and 1 for Hyde, while doing both on a live stage ends up with the actor extremely out of breath and it kind of messed with the performance.
My favorite moment is the visual accompanying the lyric "Damn you, Hyde! Leave me be!" Poor Jekyll looks so innocent, so broken, so desperate to escape the monster he's created. Hyde looks so triumphant, knowing he's weakened Jekyll's will enough to take full control. It's such a powerful moment. (3:50, if anyone's curious.)
For some reason I looked at this musical through the lense of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Jekyll being the patient who's either weaning himself off of his meds, or who's being improperly medicated, and eventually overdoses trying to get rid of Hyde. His condition eventually growing worse to the point that he thinks Hyde manifests as a separate commentating voice within his head that can take a shape in his vision. Hyde is everything Jekyll wants to be in terms of ethical boundaries, that is, none to speak of outside of what he desires to uphold, and Jekyll is what Hyde longs to be, real, alive, in control. Hyde is over confident, calculating, charming. Jekyll while confident, holds himself back from pursuing women he desires, and doing what his heart wants, favoring his logical mind over everything else in terms of decision making. They're only aware the other exists because they've been diagnosed, Jekyll being triggered to switch to Hyde, and vis versa, thus why a psychologist would be able to prescribe medication, maybe the wrong type, or too high or low of a dose. I'm ranting I do apologize.
@Sleep Paralysis Demon wait did I really write that comment? I'm surprised by how horribly its written... the grammar, the comma splicing, the run on sentences
Everyone says how gay Hyde acts in this, but to me the way he acts is fitting of his character. I've always thought that evil characters have that kind of seductiveness to them, but imo its not gay nor meant to be actually sexual.
Thank you! I see all these comments about people shipping them and it's like, " . . . No . . . I mean, you can have your opinion, and the art can imply that, but just . . . no."
Hyde has always been a collection of feelings, desires and thoughts that Jekyll believes is unbecoming of a proper gentleman. That, yes, COULD also include repressed homosexual feelings or desire if the artist portraying the story chooses. Though that was never in the original book. In the original book Jekyll and Hyde are less two personalities and Jekyll is FULLY AWARE when he’s in his ‘Hyde state’ and just uses a different name so he can do whatever the fuck he wants without having to face the consequences as Jekyll. Jekyll in the book just wants to be a dirty gremlin asshole without facing the consequences so he makes up the Hyde name and uses science to change how he looks so people won’t know it’s him.
@@alwest4472 I always thought of Jekyll being the human and Hyde just being a living list of what he wants to do but actually does so it kind of made me unsettled when people started shipping them but then again I stick to canon relations a lot so I don't have anything against it
So... I still don’t see any shoes... but I have a theory of what happens to them. So I’m guessing Hyde either chucks them out the window, tosses them off his feet, or he (this is probably the best theory) takes the shoes with him, sits on roofs, and chucks them down at unsuspecting Londoners below.
I like how jekyll and hyde are more shown together than in the older version - although there, it felt like they were switching all the time Here, it shows more that jekyll and hyde are confronting each other, not hiding that there are both hyde and jekyll, but they are one person - this is done great at the ending showing more that jekyll is going mad - I also like how he uses a shard of the mirror instead of a knife - he uses what produces his own reflection and what encaptured hyde the first time he came to existence, the first thing that saw hyde In basic sense, jekyll dies because of hyde or more over because of himself actually Brilliant
I find it odd that whenever Jekyll threatenned death to Hyde. He calls the bluff, knowing Jekyll has to die too. Confident that he could never do it. But when he grabs the glass to finish the job, and end the torment, Hyde still goes down smiling because he knows he isn’t going alone.
Hyde has no inhibitions, he's like drunk psychopath, his fear response is severly weakened. Nothing really holds him back. So even though he doesn't want to die he also isn't afraid of it. So yes, he takes joy in the knowledge that Jekyll dies to. Because although Hyde can't win he's happy knowing that Jekyll loses as well. Either Hyde comes out on top or he drags you down with him.
My absolute favourite line of this song is when Jekyll says “God Damn you, Hyde, take all your evil deeds and rot in hell!” and Hyde just responds with “I’ll see you there, Jekyll.” The way Hyde growls on the word Jekyll, the way Henry sounds so defeated. UGH just everything about it just gives me shivers.
idk why but i really loved the detail of hyde's hand bleeding around 2:42.... it really shows how malevolent and violent he is to the point of insanity
The thing with Hyde is he's mostly repressed feelings instead of a separate conciousness along side Jekyll. Hyde presumes his slaughter will continue on forever which it obviously can't whether he actually took full control or not. Hyde also states he will live on without Jekyll but also says that Jekyll and Hyde cannot be separated contradicting himself. Hell he probably didn't even realize Jekyll was contemplating suicide. I feel like Jekyll actually had more control than he realized but noth the confidence to see it while Hyde had too much confidence but not the control to stop Jekyll from killing himself.
Remember everyone. Jekyll turned into Hyde to fulfill his dark desires and urges. When he repeatedly when to far his mental state degraded and then he started believing Hyde to be a seperated entity from himself trapped within his body.
At 1:54, it almost seems as if Hyde is mocking Jekyll by acting upset. He looks like he’s almost taunting Jekyll. I may be wrong, but I really enjoyed that little part.
lyrics (cause I like it with the animation) [Jekyll] It's over now i know inside no one will ever know the sorry tale of edward hyde and those who died no one must ever know they'd only see the tragedy they'd not see my intent the shadow of hydes evil would forever kill the good that i had ment am i a good man am i a mad man it's such a fine line between a good man and a... GUYS! Anthony Warlow is reprising his role of Henry/Edward this year for the musical's 25th anniversary! ... I just wish it was a worldwide tour thing and not just in Australia...
Man, when you really think about it, Jekyll drove himself to insanity and he couldn’t take it anymore, he couldn’t bear to see everyone get hurt. He went mad with Hyde who destroyed his life, he couldn’t take it anymore, so he killed himself. It’s a really sad story if you think about it hard enough
In addition, the contrast between Jekyll at the end of “No One Must Ever Know” to his opening monologue in this song is heartbreaking and staggering. At the end of that song, he‘s confident that he can beat Hyde for good, so sure he will win and pay back all the karma he owes to all of Hyde’s victims. But here, he's completely lost all hope. Lucy’s murder destroyed him and any hopes of destroying Hyde without also destroying himself along with it. And I feel confident in assuming that was Hyde’s intention.
are we not going to talk about how "take all your evil deeds and rot in HELL!" "i'll see you there, Jekyll!" has got to be one of the most metal exchanges i've ever heard?
Every time I watch this, I think about how Jekyll/Hyde is done by one actor on stage and how difficult that would be. It's obviously done differently than this on stage, since there's a lot more you can do with an animatic, but it still must be really difficult.
Oh dang yeah, I did a piece of Jekyll and Hyde solo and it is very difficult to kind of figure out where to cut one off with the other, I wasn’t even working with the musical though so mad respect to the people who do, it’s so much more difficult than a play.
It's so strange to see Hyde's crazed expression on Jekyll, despite the fact that they literally look exactly the same. Also, these animatics are absolutely beautiful!
I love how Hyde sounds like he knows he will win and how Jekyll is sounds scared and sounds like he knows his fate is sealed but he’s trying to convince himself it’s not
Oh man, that flash of Lucy in the mirror right before Hyde shows up. This was a brilliant finish to your wonderful series of animatics. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work with all of us.
3:12 on is such a powerful moment. Hyde believes he’s won, and knows in himself that he’ll overpower Jekyll. Jekyll feels defenseless yet still in defiance, just wanting Hyde gone. He’s in outright denial of Hyde’s proud claims, but it grows into a feeling of hopelessness and defeat. This leads to the climax scene of this song. I love this animatic; it conveys the emotion so well. Thank you for the amazing work!
Just so everyone is aware, the original Jekyll and Hyde actually wasn't because of a split personality thing. It was actually just Dr Jekyll having these repressed morbid urges, and eventually he created a potion that allowed his physical body to change to reflect those morbid urges. He named this Persona Mr Hyde, and used it to enact those morbid urges whenever he wanted. It was still Dr Jekyll in control every moment, it was basically like him putting on a mask so that he could do disgusting things without regret or societal shunning
That's probably why I've heard this play get related to being in the throes of addiction and criminality. Based on the true crime shows I've watched, a lot of criminals take drugs to shut off the pangs/warnings coming from their morality and conscience while they perpetrate their crimes.
@@justopinions5919 that's exactly right. Most criminals that don't fall into a psychopathic or psychologically disturbed category (in other words: criminals who understand what is right and wrong) take drugs in order to get rid of their moral protests
I absolutely love how throughout the song, Hyde is portrayed as seperated from Jekyll, but at 3:58, they're finally shown as being one and the same person, really letting the viewer decide who now has full control...
Just because I can't find anyone else commenting on it, I love the detail in that final frame where Hyde has control, as is made obvious by his fang-toothed grin, but Jekyll's tears remain in his eyes. Makes it much more emotional as this man renowned for his mind and morality finally loses both.
And So Ends This Twisted Tale Of Mad Science 🧪 And Love ❤️ Lost 💔 And Thus I Quote Our Dearly Departed Dr Jekyll “Good and evil are so close as to be chained together in one soul”
I like to believe Jekyll and Hyde get into fights like this all the time for every little disagree like Hyde wants to go to the bar but Jekyll has work to do or they can't decide on a movie to watch.
The way that Hyde creepily sneaks from the back of Jekyll is much more scary than the interaction there was in the first version. That part where Lucy's ghost just showed up in the mirror was good too.I have to say that when it came to the first part wherein Jekyll is singing to himself that I prefer the first one. Same with the mirror smash. As for the ending... it leaves me very empty... and curious. Will Jekyll see Hyde in hell, I wonder?
I laughed when Jekyll said "Goddamn you hyde!" since nowadays no one takes any offence a that and it seems really good-natured, which made me remember that Jekyll's so posh that's like his equivalent of cussing like a sailor
I'm at a family gathering and still clicked on this so quickly. (My aunt saw and asked if Jekyll and Hyde were gay for each other, lol) This is so beautiful. On a different note, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for gracing us with these beautiful animatics. Thank you so much. I'm actually doing a small class presentation on you because we were told to do one on an animator that inspires us and you were the first one that came to mind for me. It's been so amazing to get to watch this series of beautifully made Jekyll and Hyde animatics and I'm so beyond excited to see whatever you'll be creating in the future. Thank you again for all of these and for the inspiration you've brought me. Please never stop creating because you're amazing. Thank you.
It's symbolic. Hyde is every part of Henry that was suppressed, the compulsion to break every rule and do anything he can think of. Every social taboo, especially sexual and violent ones. Hyde is a manifestation of temptation, so he tempts Jekyll in such an obvious and, at the time, scandalous way.
I went to see the musical and at one point during the performance of "alive", there's this 'orgie' of people on the scene, that's all crawling up Hyde, while he sings about feeling alive and "lust like a raging desire" yadda yadda.. Both men and women.. Hyde is suppossed to be every dark side to a human during that time period, so he'd present everything socially taboo, which also includes, being gay. He probably had a few male sexual encounters during his lifetime, using Jekylls body...
Cri Lune in the novel there are homoerotic undertones, as Jekyll’s suppressed desires are let free when he becomes Hyde likely including his sexuality.
I always loved the interesting duality posed by the song and how it's not a cut and dry "good and evil side" Jekyll regrets everything and wants to end the entire ordeal, but he wants to cover it all up to maintain his standing. Hyde wants to do it all over again, but still wants to come clean and own up to the violence if only because he's PROUD of it. But the key thing both of them share is that they don't want to be CAUGHT.
I argue it might be because of how they present themselves. Sometimes posture, gait, attitude, and general demeanor could be enough to be perceived as an entirely different person. People have doppelgängers in this world after all.
Here's the thing: in the musical, Jekyll is clearly the victim in the relationship. However in the book, it is Jekyll who is the villain, given you search deep enough. I think I may be book Jekyll
2:48 I love that confrontation duet. 3:10 I especially love the transition into Hyde's triumph. Jekyll's "No"'s are amusingly full of desperate denial. 3:36 Hyde's checkmate duet with Jekyll sounds amazing.
That was the first one i saw and then i saw a Mark and Dark Version of it and was like "hey i know this" and looked it up and then came across the musical
No, no, no- you made them even hotter- especially Hyde! I can't take this! How is your art so amazing? Your proportions, anatomy- h a n d s ! Just- you're amazing!
Whenever I sing this...I wear glasses and I flip my head back and forth dramatically and my glasses usually end up falling off with my black hair falling on my face and it makes me feel so eviiiil and this animatic just makes the entire expirience better.
@@shmoop6496 absolutely not. My friends and I actually made a bet that I was exaggerating in this statement and I told them to play this video and cast it if they didnt believe me and if it was true they all owed me 5 bucks. Lets just say I've added 20 new assets to my personal economics 😁
Maybe I'm just weird but when it comes to things like this, while everyone is talking about the characters I end up with the same thought. "Can I has the outfit... it's neat"
I didn't know that you could surpass perfection until I saw this. It's absolutely breath taking! The body language, the poses, the art! And man, I loved the way you made Hyde both his own being (though an illusion) while also making him a part if Jekyll. Like, that really cements his place as an alter ego with a separate agenda.
2:06 Oh lord Jesus Christ my mind INSTANTLY went elsewhere when this came up and I paused the video and put the screen on my bed and went to the bathroom to contemplate what I just watched Edit: 3:47 OH MAH GOD I SWEAR THIS REMINDS ME OF THOSE MANIPULATIVE THPES OF LOVE WHERE PERSON A MANIPULATES PERSON B TO LOVE THEM LIKE A YANDERE
What a beautifully dark way to end this story. I can't wait for the next saga you're going to give us. Though, what you said in your pinned comment has gotten me really interested in the future.
The fanbase having a homoerotic relationship between the characters is actually a perfect interpretation, because a huge theme of the book is "impropriety", hidden desires etc.- at the time of writing, the Blackmailer's Charter was a massive thing and half of the jailings at the time were because of "sodomy" and it is heavily implied that Utterson thinks Hyde is in a sexual/romantic relationship with Jekyll and is blackmailing him. So, nice job and great interpretation!
Also, let's remember the defining trait that led us here. The only reason this situation came to be. Jekyll is NARCISSISTIC. A disorder named after a tale of a man who fell in love with his reflection (and was doomed by it).
@@___cony.floppa Well, it's difficult to diagnose a written character, but he does exhibit symptoms (thinking himself superior, " _I_ deserve to know" being a recurring theme for his endeavours (aka entitled and hungry for power, knowledge, etc), not particularly caring about the effect he has on other people, just how it reflects on him etc). And, yes, that is the tale of Narcissus
and to think that this animation was a year ago.... CONGRATULATIONS ANIMATOR YOU JUST MADE ME SIMP FOR THE ANIMATION VERSION OF JEKYLL AND HYDE... THAT I EVEN WENT TO WATTPAD FOR A JEKYLL AND HYDE X READER STORY... I have never simped for an animation character before...

Ooooh, oh damn.

Everyone says how gay Hyde acts in this, but to me the way he acts is fitting of his character. I've always thought that evil characters have that kind of seductiveness to them, but imo its not gay nor meant to be actually sexual.
Thank you! I see all these comments about people shipping them and it's like, " . . . No . . . I mean, you can have your opinion, and the art can imply that, but just . . . no."
I mean old England would never accept someone being gay and since Hyde is the desires that Jekyll hides then it is very possible Hyde is suuuuuper gay
Also they’re the same fucking body sooooooo how gay can it be?

I like how jekyll and hyde are more shown together than in the older version - although there, it felt like they were switching all the time
Here, it shows more that jekyll and hyde are confronting each other, not hiding that there are both hyde and jekyll, but they are one person - this is done great at the ending showing more that jekyll is going mad - I also like how he uses a shard of the mirror instead of a knife - he uses what produces his own reflection and what encaptured hyde the first time he came to existence, the first thing that saw hyde
In basic sense, jekyll dies because of hyde or more over because of himself actually
Brilliant
Symbolism
yessss
My absolute favourite line of this song is when Jekyll says “God Damn you, Hyde, take all your evil deeds and rot in hell!” and Hyde just responds with “I’ll see you there, Jekyll.”
The way Hyde growls on the word Jekyll, the way Henry sounds so defeated. UGH just everything about it just gives me shivers.
That part where Edward smacks the mirror and Henry's hand gets cut is an amazing way to show that they are in the same body.
I applaud you.
Indeed
idk why but i really loved the detail of hyde's hand bleeding around 2:42.... it really shows how malevolent and violent he is to the point of insanity
I feel like Jekyll actually had more control than he realized but noth the confidence to see it while Hyde had too much confidence but not the control to stop Jekyll from killing himself.
also the fact that Hyde smashes the mirror and Jekyll's hand bleeds too, just.... *chef's kiss*

It’s crazy every time for me when I remember - IT’S ONE MAN PLAYING TWO CHARACTERS AT THE SAME TIME! THE BREATH CONTROL?? The ACTING?!! Incredible
Too bad this was more of an attempt. He dies on the wedding day
In addition, the contrast between Jekyll at the end of “No One Must Ever Know” to his opening monologue in this song is heartbreaking and staggering. And I feel confident in assuming that was Hyde’s intention.
are we not going to talk about how
"take all your evil deeds and rot in HELL!"
"i'll see you there, Jekyll!"

Every time I watch this, I think about how Jekyll/Hyde is done by one actor on stage and how difficult that would be. It's obviously done differently than this on stage, since there's a lot more you can do with an animatic, but it still must be really difficult.

That part where Lucy's ghost just showed up in the mirror was good too.I have to say that when it came to the first part wherein Jekyll is singing to himself that I prefer the first one.
AAAAH I KNOW IT'S SO PERFECT

And man, I loved the way you made Hyde both his own being (though an illusion) while also making him a part if Jekyll. Like, that really cements his place as an alter ego with a separate agenda.
I can't stop rewatching this. It's like...self-cest and self-destruction at the same time.
We've figured out the mark of a good person... glasses.
Me: I’m bicurious!

Oh lord Jesus Christ my mind INSTANTLY went elsewhere when this came up and I paused the video and put the screen on my bed and went to the bathroom to contemplate what I just watched
Edit: 3:47 OH MAH GOD I SWEAR THIS REMINDS ME OF THOSE MANIPULATIVE THPES OF LOVE WHERE PERSON A MANIPULATES PERSON B TO LOVE THEM LIKE A YANDERE
The beginning of the song: damn. (I see a few changes, art style definitely better than the first version) end of the song: D A M N (??????!!!??!?!)
I loved how when Hyde cut his hand, the same wound appeared on Jekyll’s opposite hand! Clever mirror symbolism!!!!
Ahem, were you born under three moons?

You'll die and my memory will hide you, Hyde
I'm sorry i hear this every time

@@amieperkins4933 ... "If he's Mr. Hyde, I shall be Mr. Seek".
@@Lrd_Stormoh lord, is that true??
@@___cony.floppa Well, it's difficult to diagnose a written character, but he does exhibit symptoms (thinking himself superior, " _I_ deserve to know" being a recurring theme for his endeavours (aka entitled and hungry for power, knowledge, etc), not particularly caring about the effect he has on other people, just how it reflects on him etc). And, yes, that is the tale of Narcissus
@@Lrd_Storm ahh! Now understand
†GOD DAMN YOU, HYDE! TAKE ALL YOUR EVIL DEEDS AND ROT IN HELL!

And me falling in love with they one more time 💖💖💖💖✨✨
You are sick
I *love* how it's left ambiguous whether or not Jekyll succeeded. Since Hyde doesn't need glasses the only person we know for sure is dead is Jekyll.
and to think that this animation was a year ago....
I did the same thing 😳
