      Feeling the same way as you about the rising cost of bluray/4k collecting. There's a window of affordability: sometime after the new release buzz but before the total sales volume slows to a trickle (community saturation). After that? Try the second hand market but by no means wait until there is low stock! That's where the scalpers reside...

    I predicted this when everyone was in denial as fewer big box chains stopped selling or greatly reduced their inventory. Fewer sellers mean higher prices.
    The denial stemmed from ignorance and a love for gimmicks more than the films. Extra cardboard and steel don't enhance a film. But many will pay an extra 30-50% more (If not more) for gimmicks. I noted how, as this grows into a collector's market, it will become the new "Funko Pop", only not as many collectors. You don't need a player for a Funko and there isn't a streaming service to compete in. What I learned was how the collectibles bamboozle just keeps recycling itself and there are suckers born every minute.
    We are already seeing where people bought the "wrong" 4K and needed to get the "right" 4K. Oftentimes, the "right" one just has more cardboard and other novelties.
    Nothing will discourage new collectors more if they fork out $30-40 for a 4K and then a year later, a better transfer comes along.
    I bought my Wizard of Oz 4K for $10. There is no way I am going to throw $50-70 on the new anniversary edition because cardboard and the possibility of a better transfer. Why? Because at some point, it's about some valid status or sheer consumer stupidity.

    • @ronthorn3
      @ronthorn3 Месяц назад

      Nothing I hate more than the stupid cardboard cards in those overpriced collectors boxes! When the hell did these silly cards become so important to buying a movie? If studios could still make quaint movies on a reasonable budget they'd still be raking in the cash.

    I think Disney lost a lot of money they were expecting to make over the past few years on their “woke Marvel experiment.” This was during a time when Best Buy was still handling the exclusive steelbook releases for Marvel, and their partnership in the matter stung them financially as well. It is my opinion that the low performing woke Disney steelbook factor may have contributed to Best Buy quitting the physical movie market entirely. Now we have Deadpool & Wolverine, the only MCU title this year, and it was a hit with audiences. Disney’s gonna jack those prices up to make back some of that lost revenue on the likes of The Eternals. It’s a predatory practice, it sucks, and I truly hope all the other studios and boutique labels don’t become unaffordable to collect in the fallout of this decision.

I've found a lot of new labels like second sight. And it may not seem smart, wallet wise, but a lot of times I will even pay a little more on a boutique site because they need the business more than Amazon. And if major studios keep up $50+ movies, people will put that $50+ in a better product elsewhere, even if they have to wait for a later release date.
