In this episode of Creating A Great Tone, I discuss a topic that seems to be another one of the most frequently asked questions I receive and read people enquiring about. It is the question how we can balance our preset and snapshot volume levels so they are consistent. When playing live sometimes it can be a real problem to have our clean and distorted tones sit at the correct level. In this video I talk about a couple ways we can be more successful in balancing our levels when using snapshots or changing presets. I truly hope some folks find this video helpful :-)

Ive struggled with balancing clean to overdriven snapshots. This is exactly what ive been looking for. Great video. Especially appreciate your style in explaining.
Awesome! This is extremely helpful. Really appreciate to get your insights on this complex topic. Way to go.
My pleasure and thank you :-) Glad it was helpful!
Huge help Jason! Thank you for this video!
Thanks so much buddy and glad you enjoyed 😀
That was extremely helpful! It solves the exact issues that that I’ve been struggling with. Thank you so much!
Thanks Jason. Great demo on this important topic.
My pleasure Stephen and thank you 😁
Thank You again Jason-These Videos are great & I think the same way as you do ( in depth ) :)
My pleasure and thank you so much George :-)
An another great video, I needed it ! Good work, thank you for the links
Thank you very much Jason - incredibly helpful as always
Jason, this is really great!!!
Thank you so much Gary :-)
You are the best, Jason!
Fabulous Jason, thank you again 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
My pleasure Rob 😁
Great video! Event helix user should see this.
I haven't read through the comments so I'm not sure if this was mentioned but putting the tone generator from the pitch blocks at the start of the chain is a great way to get a perfectly consistent input level when doing the snapshot/preset balancing. Doing this I can get my snapshots balanced to the tenth of a dB without touching a guitar. You can even notice how delay increases the overall level of a preset. Obviously differences in compression between presets means you probably don't want the levels identical but it gets them really close in practice.
Thanks so much Brad :-) Great idea with the tone generator.
This video is one of the best shown examples of balancing your patches. Thanks Jason for your time and knowledge for putting this together. I'm going to try to develop a workflow to balance all my pedal-boards with the Youlean Loudness Meter via Logic. I play live in a few covers and tribute shows and I notice there's a big difference sometimes between mono and stereo loudnesses through the same PA. Sometimes the stereo (same patches as mono) are quieter on some patches. I'm not sure why yet but expect it may be that one channel has different processing in stereo giving a lower reading. Meanwhile, appreciate any advice. Many thanks 🙂
Nice shirt Jason, also great video as always!!!! You
Thanks so much John 😁
Rush rules!
@@JasonSadites great video but. What is the correct final volumen? Amp +stock cab or amp + impulse response? Because the diference of final volumen between stock cab vs impulse response is too big. With the impulse response i have digital distortion with same setting in the amp . In clean or crunchy sound with the impulse response im having digital distortion. Im crying for this problem... In a corner of the bathroom 😁
Pre pandemic used helix rack in the studio but in homme use helix native. have a gibson les Paul Studio with gibsons 57 classic. Í love fender and vox tones in clean or crunchy and marshalls for more ruaaack
Hey Jason. This is perfect timing. I've been battling the levels on all of my presets and snapshots and never got them where I needed them to be. Have a gig on Saturday so this will give me a way to really smooth things out across my set list. Thank you!!!
My pleasure Mark and really glad it was helpful 😁
Extra tip: even after I do all that the volumes may vary slightly so I program my volume pedal to control the output min 75%, max 100% of channel volume. If the preset is too quiet, I use the volume pedal to raise it. If it’s too loud, I use my guitar volume to lower it. Also, learn to use edit mode with your feet so you can change the channel volume or final compressor volume on the fly.
Yes Brent! Excellent tips, thank you so much :-)
Thank you bro, great video
awesome video, I've learned so much from this channel! I'm curious as to why you didn't mention the output level control at the end of every patch.
Thanks so much and glad you enjoy the videos :-) The output block needs to be set for everybody's individual needs based on what they are plugging into, so I leave it for each person to set appropriately.
Great instructional video, again, Jason, exactly what I needed to "polish" my snapshots. Keep rockin'
Thank you so much Roberto and really glad it was helpful 😁
❤nice video
You Lean also has an install program so it can be used independently of a DAW... at least in Windows you can. Works like a champ. Plus there's an online version as well.
That is awesome to know, thank you so much John :-)
Would you ever recommend using a a gain effect in a slot to adjust the volume at the end of the chain vs changing settings on the amp or effects?
Jason, what value of LUFS do you think is the best (for balancing presets/snaps volumes) when you're going direct from XLR to a mixer in a Live context?, ¿About -23db? ¿More?, ¿Less?... Thanks!!
Hi Jason, on this video I noticed that when you go from clean to lead or vice versa there is a what I can only describe as a rushing sound like a spike of volume? I am new to the helix and am getting the same issue. Can you advise me on how to fix this? Love your videos which are excellent.
I am new to the Helix Floor. This video has been a lifesaver for me. I do have a probably dumb question. When I go and change the Ch Vol for a snapshot, it won't let me change the Ch Vol differently for each snapshot. Am I missing a setting? Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Hi Mr. Jason, I’m new your channel and I recently have the Helix Line 6. How can I make the balancing level directly in the multi effect pedal? Or Do I have to do the balancing level of the Helix on my computer? Using my DAW. Thank you.
Another great video!
Note you used amp ch volume throughout. Would it be better practice, when building presets/snapshots etc. from scratch, to use the meter on every block we add, therefore, when bypassing them, levels continue to remain consistent? If so, any pitfalls to this approach?
Thanks so much! In my use I have not found that to be necessary. You could also use the final output block to adjust volume.
Please explain why you would dime the level on the Helix unit? Why not place it at 2 o'clock for all presets. If it is dimed, how would you quickly and emergently adjust volume levels mid gig or mid song without going into any settings? Am I missing something?
😂😂😂.. I have seen all your videos with beard on.. first thing loaded this video was.. who’s that kid… 🤪
Just kidding.. Big Fan 🤟🏼
im havin this issue on my helix floor ,some patch and tones very low and when i go other patch way too high ,i just want every patch same sound level
I play with 2 different guitars and use one preset. My problem is that both guitars don't have the same output. So one guitar is very distorted and the other quite clean and quiet with the same preset. Is there a trick or something tp achieve the same level?
Does the same apply when using Native?
How exactly are you rolling back the volume??
Thanks Jason, I know this this video has been a time ago, but i like to know, when do you use the output block level.?
My pleasure :-) I usually use the output block level when I just need to raise or lower the level without affecting anything else.
Thanks for all the videos. I am a new user and having a hard time understanding why you would want you rhythm and solo perceived loudness to be equal when using this live. I set it up for a gig last week and had my snapshots increasing slightly in volume from clean rhythm, to crunch rhythm, to solo, my leads were still not loud enough to even hear without the sound tech riding the faders up and down during the various songs. Wouldn't you need to boost your solo volume by 3-5db to have it stand out on top of the band mix?
I use +2db and +3.5db on solo patches
What is the video called where you show how you set up your patches and the reasoning for each effect block in your template? I’m a huge fan of your presets and I’ve been using them for awhile now without really trying to understand them. They just sound good and I’ve been fine with that. But I’d like to start digging in and understanding how to build my own patches and I’d like to watch the video where your explain how you build your patches. Thanks!
Thank so much Ryan :-) I believe you are looking for the first one in this series, I have a playlist with all of them in it...enjoy!
Glue compression?? What does that mean?
I feel so stupid. I did this and thought my levels were good on the meter but still didn’t sound different. I realized I didn’t have into the computer through a audio interface
you sound exactly like Andrew Wasson
Would it be easier to run a white noise generator through the Helix patches and set the volume as needed?
David, I guess you could do that. Not sure it would be easier and it would likely get a little annoying after a while, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
To match the volumes you change the channel volume? I thought the channel volume was for the pre-amp which is where most of the tone shaping is happening? Wouldn't changing the master volume preserve the tone and simply reduce the volume?
Exactly the opposite of what you just described. The Drive control is control of preamp. CH. VOL has no effect in tone, only volume.
@@JasonSadites Yes, I found this out on my own running sine waves through the helix to observe harmonic distortion. Line 6 could have done a better job labeling/explaining this as I also thought channel volume would change the amp tone.
My big issue is after properly gain staging the big knob volume on the Helix to the input of my Powercab with a single coil guitar, I'll start clipping with a humbucker guitar. I've tried to avoid having different patches for every single guitar I have, but I am not sure if there is any other solution.
Yeah, the different pickup output between different guitars will most certainly change things. I personally always keep my big knob on full and use the preset output block to adjust the preset to where I need it.
@@JasonSadites I never thought of putting the big knob on full and adjusting from the output block. That sounds a whole lot more precise when trying to dial in the gain staging on the Powercab. Thanks as always, Jason!
Mr Jason I down loaded orban LM and everything went well on install and when I pull down sorce it has helix speakers and helix interface , but either one I choose I cant get any response from my LM guages , is there anything I'm missing to get meter to activate you can think of
There is also a little power button at the bottom that needs to be engaged, have you pressed that also?
@@JasonSadites that was it Jason my power button on orban meter was below my task bar lol.thanks so much
Haven't even turned on my Helix yet and I just wanted to know how to adjust volumes between presets for when I do start building sounds and I'm 6 minutes and 30 seconds into your video and I don't even think you started to answer that
Would you like me to delete this video which has a 98.1% approval ratio and shoot a custom one for you?
Another great video Jason. You suggest changing the Channel Volume on the amp to affect the patch loudness since it does not affect the sound. The Helix manual does not say what Channel Volume does but on my H&K tube amp increasing Channel Volume would increase the volume coming out of the pre-amp and therefore would affect the extent to which the power amp distorts. The Master control affects power-amp volume, and Gain affects amount of distortion in the pre-amp stage. I haven't played with Channel Volume/Master settings on the Helix amps to see whether I can hear difference. So I think using the output block to vary volume is sure way not to affect patch sound?
The output block is definitely a great way if you don't want to affect anything else in your signal chain (i.e the compressor at the end). Having said that, the channel volume in the Helix does not affect the amp sound, it simply raises and lowers the volume.
how do i hookup my helix to my laptop so i can use this sound meter?and in span shots you just go to ch level to each span shot and put volume where you want then click save ?ty
Make sure you download HX Edit from the Line 6 software website. Then connect your Helix to your laptop via USB. Here is a video I did a while back on how to use Snapshots correctly: ruclips.net/video/nSJefCG70Kk/видео.html
Hope that helps 😀
Hi Jason! I am trying to use a preset with Brit 2204 in clean and dirty where the change is done via snapshots (Drive and channel volume are controlled). My problem is that when I switch back from distorted to clean a loud pop noise is audible, which would hit the ceiling on the loudness meter. Do you have a workaround idea for that? It is especially annoying for chords ringing out. I am an HX stomp owner. Due to the DSP and slot limitation I try to avoid dual amp configurations.
12 minutes in still not getting to the point
Don't watch. Problem solved. You are very welcome.
Less talk, more info
No, don't watch if you don't like it.
@Jason Sadites good attitude to criticism. Maybe do some editing on the Helix too instead of the computer
BTW, good info. But a half hour video? C'mon
