    In this episode of Creating A Great Tone, I discuss how we can use the newly added Shelf and Tilt EQs that we received in Helix firmware update 2.8. I also show compare them to the popular split x-over technique that I have used so much in the past. I really hope you enjoy the video and that these new tools are as useful for you as they are for me.

    I wish there was a graphic representation of EQs in Helix

      For real, they have one for Global EQ, why not blocks?

    Awesome and thorough walk thru of this powerful addition in the new update 2.80. Thanks Jason - you are really helping to highlight what an awesome platform the Helix is...

    It's really nice to have all three tools . I've been using your split crossover technique for quite some time on my Helix floor but the shelf and tilt are definitely game changers for my Stomp.

    The shelf EQ sounds close enough for me with my tones. It's awesome, I really have to practice tweaking the EQs in my presets. Great video, thanks!

    Replaced my template with the Shelf eq block, just using the methodology from the prior tutorial, and it worked like a champ. Thanks for doing a follow up to expand on the capabilities. Also, you gave me a tip on setting the big knob to unity gain, and setting output from the preset output block, which has improved my workflow tremendously!

    As clever as all this stuff is, wouldn't it be better if the Helix and its various amp models just sounded more like the real things to begin with. I can honestly say that I've never had to use any additional pre or post eq with any of the 'real' amps I've used over the years. I love my Helix, and I've used it live exclusively for the past two and a half years but, you have to work harder to get 'realistic' tones from it, compare to the Fractal stuff for example. It will get there, just takes a bit more effort, and experience. I can get mine to sound virtually indistinguishable to a real valve rig, in a live mix, but not without the use of an eq block, or sometimes even two of them. Another interesting video Jason. Thanks.

    great stuff Jason. So glaf to see L6 continuing to improve the Helix. Just wish they would do the same for the still in existence Firehawk FX users who havent received any real updates in over 3 years! :(

      I had a Firehawk, and was very happy with its sounds. It had to go though, simply due to the latency (tiny dropouts) between preset changes. Helix has overcome this with snapshots but, that does create other problems. We're all at the mercy of DSP speeds and capacity.

    I've been trying to dial in the sound of the new Neural DSP Soldano Slo-100 plugin on my HX Stomp. But, I haven't been able to get the upper-mids to sound right. I think the Tilt EQ may provide a solution to that. Thanks again for you awesome videos.

    This is all new to me. Owned the helix LT for a few weeks now. (Purchased your American preset pack to get me started). But my question is that can’t you get close by using the tone stack controls on the amp models to limit and boost the frequencies?

  • @ValveReactor
    @ValveReactor 5 лет назад +1

    Still think the 10 Band EQ is the best for toneshaping and the Parametric EQ is the best for finding annoying frequencies.

  • @chris_and_music

    Is there a reference point for choosing center frequency? How does it vary accordint to the tuning ?

  • @indianrockstrat
    @indianrockstrat 5 лет назад +1

    Thanks !! I've seen some folks who sell patches ( and others ) always put a compressor both at the beginning and end of patches. Do you normally only put one at the end? Ever considered a parametric as the first block to deal with pickup resonant frequencies or other issues up front, before those go through the amp etc?

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  5 лет назад

      I do on occasion use a comp at the start also, but only when it is warranted. The end one is more a subtle glue for the preset. Haven't really had a need to put the para eq at the start yet.

    Thank you for the video I've been waiting for it's release!
    Idea: couldn't you set the low shelf to 650 Hz and then lower it, if you wanted to lower the lows, then just raise the level to compensate?

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  5 лет назад

      My pleasure :-) That should work, but just no sure how intuitive it would be. I have been finding the Tilt eq to be very useful!

    • @zackfreedman2486
      @zackfreedman2486 5 лет назад

      @@JasonSadites Yes, after trying it does make it harder to dial in from the differences in the volume. I am also finding the Tilt eq useful, don't have to back the mic off to where it sounds thin to get a usable tone anymore!

  • @tomw1970
    @tomw1970 5 лет назад +5

    What would happen in the shelf EQ, Q of the slope aside, if you left the high shelf untouched, set the low shelf at 650 and dropped it by the desired level plus the amount you want to raise the frequencies above 650 then volume compensate with the level?

    • @dalebrownmusic
      @dalebrownmusic 5 лет назад +1

      I was about to say the exact same thing! Set lows below 650 to -2db then set level to +2db for example.

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  5 лет назад +1

      I would imagine this would give a similar result, but I would rather have it built into the block for simplicity. I have found the Tilt is working very nicely though!

    Hello, maybe a silly questions from my side: What happens with old presets including the split crossover within the new firmware 2.8? Do they work anyhow?

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  5 лет назад

      Yup they will still work just fine :-)

  • @jorgea3507

    do you still have the link for the crossover technique? Im on Jason overload and cant find that one. I want to try all techniques as you mention with two amps on Xover.

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  4 года назад

      I talk at length about that in a number of videos....I use it very subtly at the end as a 'glue' to the overall sound. Almost like a mastering section. Hope that helps :-)

  • @sjsphotog
    @sjsphotog 5 лет назад

    Jason - so I assume you dont have access to a waveform generator/software to see the actual EQ curves being applied with each and the sliopes of them?

    • @JasonSadites
      @JasonSadites  5 лет назад +1

      I do and I could have done the tests, but just approached this by ear instead.

    • @sjsphotog
      @sjsphotog 5 лет назад

      @@JasonSadites ok yeah I figured someone with your studio recording prowesss would have that capability. of course there IS the graphic EQ visible in the global eq which you can use to find harsh frequencies but no graphic curve visible outside of that mode sadly....naybe they will add a way down the road

    What Line 6 needs to do is add a pop up window that shows the over all EQ at the end of the signal chain. Options should allow real time view and a static view of the overall EQ of the signal. Also allow us to “zero out” to flat the display and that allows us to see the EQ effects as you turn on EQs and effects. For example, you select your amp and cab and zero out the EQ display. As you add EQ blocks the display will show the effect on the sound. This window would not affect the sound, but only show the EQ of the sound at the end of the signal chain.
