    In this episode of Creating A Great Tone, I discuss a topic which comes up a lot in comments and messages I receive. I have a lot of folks say that the Helix can only sound good when used with all sorts of tricks, FX, heavy processing & IRs. In this video I take a look at what the tones are like with no processing other than using an amp model along with the paired up stock cab. It was a lot of fun to simply treat the Helix as a simple amp and see what kind of tones can be coerced out of it. I really hope you enjoy this fun look at the most simple use of the Helix :-)

    That’s what I’m talking about! I agree that I think most people overprocess their sound. I always like the more raw, basic sound of a guitar amp and a guitar squalling and playing beautifully.

    Jason, you make everything sound great. Even your “angry” response to the “rude “ guy, so polite and willing to help. There’s a reason companies like Yamaha Group/Line 6 pick you up. Let me say what I took away from this video. I didn’t find any of the patches did anything for me...but what I did find is 34 most excellent, easy to follow, foundational videos flying through my head saying I can make these sound great for what I want!! All credit to you. What is the saying “give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime” Thank YOU, as EVH says “Great stuff as always”!!

    A while back, when Kirk Hammett would record, he'd bring at least 60 of his favorite amps to the studio. They'd all be in another room turned on and warmed up. He'd pick an amp (or couple of amps) to give him the specific sound he was looking for, for a particular song. Most people would use pedals, he'd use amps. This is definitely one way to approach getting various sounds from the Helix.
    Excellent topic, covered well, Jay! Thanks.

      @@JasonSadites You are most welcome; I've been watching your Helix series for a while and I am thoroughly impressed. I've learned a lot by just following along. I think I am now at the point that I am ready to pull the trigger on the Helix Floor :)
      With regards to those negative comments about that Helix tone, I think they are fuelled by the stock Line 6 patches. Those usually leave a bit to be desired (I have the HX Stomp and I remember being not too inspired, save for those patches with the JS_ format, ha ha!
      Having said that, we have so many options at our disposal these days - it's virtually impossible to make anything sound bad, as long as we stay on top of it. With something like the (inexpensive) Orange OMEC Teleport interface and a Helix Native along with one's favourite pedals that most of us still have (Meris, Origin Effects, Strymon, The Hungry Robot, Xotic, to name a few) one can build massive hybrid patches & rigs that can feed, say to an FRFR, or the Powercab units, or regular amps, or both! In that context it shows how flexible and robust the Helix platform really is. So yeah, maybe there are "better" modelling units out there, but as a platform & workflow, the Helix is just unparalleled. Amazing stuff!

    I'm a great fan of yours Jason. I often use your videos as reference; especially now that I have my own Helix. One thing that always puzzled me about all your video made in your studio: Being that you work so hard at getting sounds out of your Helix, how come you never did anything to your room itself and minimize the reverb in your studio? I can tell the lady of the house has no key to your studio otherwise there would be all kind of shit on the walls and throw carpets on the wood floor lol. If you feel like it one day after your dusted, pan the cam around to show us your workstation - would be nice to see your environment. maybe a couple of bean bags and a carpet on the floor might turn out on day lol.

    Jason, you make it sound so much better than me. I’m
    Just meh about it. I have great amps and I love dirt and fuzz pedals. Which I’ve integrated into the Helix but tbh I’m only using a guitar cab. I don’t gig and I’m losing interest in it especially today. I need to spend more time with it but so much tweaking and I liked the zen drive but the great king of tone. Nope. So I know most people use a computer to tweak and tweak but I’m unable to due to a neck issue. I can come up with a decent sound. But I can come up with a great sound in a quick moment with my amps pedals, guitar and play. No tweaking for hrs. Again, you sound great. Idk. I have a no problem with the kemper but I don’t think that’s as good as an amp either. No issues working a Revival Drive. It actually makes the kemper sound and feel better but I’m sticking with amps. They take the pedals better too. I just can’t get the feel and sound I want.

    Ha ha ha - Methinks Jason's got 2.8 (or some other new version) on his Helix, that's why he can't use it nor disclose why his Helix is indisposed. :) Fantastic video, and something I've been trying to tell people since the original POD - KEEP IT SIMPLE. Add stuff only if you must. Get a great amp tone first. Thanks for all you do, JS!

    I'm trying to recreate the steps from this video as I watch it, and immediately I notice two things: 1) your dry signal is way louder than mine, and 2) my dry signal is harsh and fizzy compared with yours, almost like an amp with cab emulation turned off. How could that be? The only explanation I can think of is that you're boosting and heavily EQing your signal somewhere along the chain. This could be a high-end preamp or interface you're not telling us about or this could be some plugins in your DAW or professional postprocessing. I'm switching between my Gibson SG, Epiphone LP Pro, and Strat. None of them is producing a tone close to what I'm hearing in the video, with my Strat tone even bordering on unusable. This is a great mystery to me why there is this huge tonal difference between your Helix and mine. Some people seem to get great tones out of the Helix the second they plug into it, while others end up with the harshness and fizz they can't work around no matter how much they tweak. One thing I'm sure of is, I certainly didn't pay USD 1,200 for a unit that requires a sound-engineer degree to sound good.
    P.S. And I think the title of this video is therefore misleading since it's not how the Helix REALLY sounds...

    • @Utubewrk123
      @Utubewrk123 4 года назад

      Rusty James it should be so easy. I have the rack. It just requires too much tweaking. I can get a decent sound out of it but I go right back to my amps and a few pedals. If I gigged yes I would use this. FYI one issue I could be having is I go straight thru a guitar cabinet but so what? It should still sound good. My Yamaha100hd goes right to guitar cabinet. Yamaha bought line6 btw. Sounds and feels great simple to use. This requires a learning curve requiring knowing a bit more than the average guitarist knows. It’s got option paralysis as well. I use the same preset every time. Because at some point I want to play my guitar. Oh I paid more than $1200 and since I upgraded my software to 2.8 the joystick which I barely use this product to begin with sometimes work. Researched it in the internet and others are saying the same thing. Go back to 2.71. I would’ve never upgraded tbh. I don’t use the new stuff anyway. Yea it’s fun to fool with but if anyone wants to know why did I buy it? #gas.

      Compression?
      Well, i know nothing about audio but i'm pretty sure that anything you hear via any apps will sounds completely different live. Have you tried dialing your Helix as loud as your environment allows it? Or try to use compressor at the end of the chain (i believe RUclips compresses its videos in an extreme way).
      That's why RUclips gear demos focusing on sound is borderline useless, unless we could percieve and imagine each gear's attributes and characteristics in real world use (and this requires experience with a lot of gear previously).

    • @a.l.1044
      @a.l.1044 4 года назад

      @@bambangkurniawan5634 I've tried pretty much everything. And yes, I think compression plays a part. A guy sent me a track recorded with the Helix, and it sounded different from his RUclips video demoing the same tone. But there must be something else at play, things like pickups with an impedance that conflicts with the Helix, bad cables, and so on. I noticed my tone improved a bit after I lowered my puckups all the way down, but it's still not as good as RUclips demos. I keep experimenting to find out how you get the Helix to sound good.

    • @bambangkurniawan5634
      @bambangkurniawan5634 4 года назад

      @@a.l.1044 Truee. Just enjoy and play it, Man!
      I remember the first time i jump into this tone and gear mess, i buy pickups, amps, effects, modellers, and cabs, built my own cables using top of the line components, setting up the guitar by myself, shielding, and everything, just to realize that all i need is a nice, mid range guitar, good cables, any overdrive, modulation, delay, and reverb, a small solid state amps, and a lot of parctice. Since i'm not a pro musician. lol.
      I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of "fixing tone" again. Now it's just guitar, helix, pc+, and whatever patch that is in the ballpark. Just turn it up to 11! Anything will sounds good if its loud enough.
