- Live in the Fraser Performance Studio at WGBH in Boston, violinist Anne Akiko Meyers pianist Anton Nel perform Bach's famous Air on a G String, from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068.
Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the most sought after concert violinists on the stage today. She regularly performs as guest soloist with many of the world's most prestigious orchestras, in recital, and on television and radio. She is a top-selling recording artist who has more than 24 highly acclaimed albums to her credit.
In 2013, it was announced that Anne was selected to receive lifetime use of the 'Vieuxtemps' Guarneri del Gesu, reportedly the most expensive violin ever sold, and considered to be one of the top violins ever created.
Anne was born in San Diego, California and grew up in Southern California. She studied with Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, Josef Gingold at Indiana University, and Felix Galimir, Masao Kawasaki and Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School. At age 23, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, the only artist to be the sole recipient of this annual prize.
Cathy Fuller hosts this episode of Drive Time Live on Classical New England, 99.5 FM in Boston.

Anne Akiko Meyers is a fascinating violinist.
Such talent and such beauty!
They say an instrument is only as good as the musician who plays it. Or a musician is only as good as the instrument being played. You could debate either....... But this makes any discussion moot. This marriage, this perfect synergy of woman and violin is without a doubt, undeniably as good as it will ever get. It touched my heart, my soul, my being.
Wow, what a great comment. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
eargasm!
wow, it's so clear and beautiful...
I can't stop listening to this. A master violinist with a timeless instrument. What a treat!!
Glad you're enjoying it so much!
I thought I was the only one that could not stop listening to this LoL!
barboza ewell Thank you both!
still listening until now : )
I listened to Mrs. Meyers for the first time in 1992, when I was been at London for four weeks because a language Summer course, and I visited my friends there.
What an absolutely brilliant and sensitive virtuoso, and an incredibly humble human being, too. She breathes so much life and soul into everything she plays; a tremendous joy to listen to.
Finally I am listening to a music that bring tears. Thanks WGBH.
I applauded long and loud at the finish. I hope you all heard it. Thank you so much, Anne Akiko Meyers, Anton Nel, WGBH and WGBH music.
Tremendous applause, Don! Thanks so much
OOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGGGGG I PLAY FORTNITE
This piece brings back so many memories. I listen to it and wondered of the many people that were moved by it. Of all the songs in the entire world, rock and roll, oldies, etc this one is number one.
I didn't expect such a nice comment coming from the handle "se7ensnakes". There's no doubt this piece is a masterful work of art.
Anne and Anton: Thank you! You made my day.
Love, Kurt
I being listen this at least 100 times, what a interpretation!!!
It is amazing to see your playing. You play your intruments with your heart and soul.
Exquisite, the last note was only to remind us that she is human. My admiration
What did the last note say to you about her being human? That wasn't a slip or a mistake. She just added her own flare.
It was an accidental wrong note in an otherwise amazing performance. Calling it flair is just denial
How wonderful to hear the love she has for such an extraordinary and unblemished instrument. Such a beautiful piece played by such a beautiful violinist.
Transcending, magical, and brilliantly honest!! Cheers
the sound of the violin is very sublime and pleasant, like!!
An incredible violinist can truly make miracles with that kind of violin and composing!
رع
Thanks for the nice comment! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Exquisite. Thank you.
The epitome of what humans are capable of, both the instrument and the performance. I love this video so.
thank you for sharing this.
Just so beautiful
That brought me tears.
Thanks for your comment. So nice to know you were moved by the performance.
Exquisite playing! This is quite a different version from the "Air on the G String" arranged by August Wilhelmj back in the middle 1800's. Same melody, but totally different placement on the violin. Both are gorgeous, and both are Bach at his finest.
A performance that makes me smile/laugh, out of sheer wonder and appreciation of the execution.
Well said!
facinating and mesmerizing ........feels really good to the soul :)
Mind blown!
Happy to do it. We'll be posting more video from Anne's show at WGBH in coming days. Consider subscribing so you won't miss new videos. Appreciate it!
Glad you enjoyed the vid! Thanks for leaving a comment.
Wow, this is beautiful.
I hope i can play like her in one day
Fantastic!
ex-Vieuxtemps 1741 Guarnerius, called the "Mona Lisa" of violins. Owned by a private collector who bequeathed lifetime use of the instrument for performances to violinist Anne Akiko Meyers.
An expert and beautifully played accompaniment by Anton Nel.
... there are no words that do justice ... only tears from the joy of listening ... thank you ...
Wow, thanks for the comment!
brought me to sleep, it was soothing.
The story of how the violin just came into her life unexpected reminds me so much of how my cello came into my life! Thank you for sharing her story and a beautiful performance.
Thanks, Peter! Sounds like you have a great story about your instrument as well. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for leaving your comment.
This is so amazingly beautiful, I just read/listened to an article about her and this amazing instrument. I loved the sound so much that I looked up more info and purchased her 2 newest albums on Amazon.
Glad you found this video and thanks for leaving a comment! Anne is an amazing talent with an incredible instrument.
Wow, thanks for watching & dropping a such a nice comment.

Superb!
Qué excelente violinista¡¡ Bach en su mejor expresión¡¡
Splendid ♫♪♥
Thank you for watching!
Which idiots disliked this?! This is brilliant.
Just a troll. Nobody with a human heart.
Maybe they just thought it was download button.
It's merely the mis-clicks. 27 out of 1127.
Always bugged me. Even if one doesn’t like it, a turd or something, common intelligence suggests: move on. Not liking (or understanding) art or pure magic is a reflection on the (turd) individual. Again. Move on. Either make a positive opinion, or don’t make it at all. That should guide RUclips, or whatever media’s etiquette. I know, I know. They have the right to express.
I like someone says they thought that was the download button. 🤣 which case I apologize, I must have judged too early.. Stupidity is a given genetic entity, which case, they can’t help. And that’s completely fine.
violoniste exceptionnelle
Excelente arreglo, excelente ejecución.
Come to Seattle!!!
We would love to hear you play
La mejor interpretación que he oído de esta hermosa pieza!!!
Thanks, Angie! Glad you enjoyed the performance.
it seems to me most certainly that Anne Akiko was forced, due to the time constraints of TV production time limits, to perform the Air by Bach from Suite number 3 at a near andante time signature. I feel that it was somewhat pressed, almost anxious, so to the point of which she Anne Akiko Meyers was oppressed and not given appropriate, sufficient time give to us all her most glorious rendition of the Bach Air; how be it, she is not at all to blame but, her given grace to us at this most excellent performance has once again captured and sustained my heart to her. on her blessed CD The Bach Album, she, Anne Akiko, presents her most true beauty in all the tracks included on that glorious recording. Thank you generously, Anne Akiko...
Point well made and duly taken.
I think she does magnificent with the solo pieces accompanied by piano. My guess is many people want a piece of her and start orchestrating and then it loses a little. Maybe it’s just the intimacy that gets lost, but damn, she’s good!
only one mistake, she hit the d string right at the end.im amazed at how someone can play the instrument so beautifully she must practice for hours every day.
It's not a mistake. She just brought some of her flare to the ending. I do the same in some pieces
@@pluutoop lies
beautiful music played by a beautiful woman, what else do we need in life ? :)
Wonderful,.. Pretty
Acoustics in the studio is slightly different than orchestral hall. But it is very beautiful performance by an already legendary violinist, Ms. Meyers
That vibrato! How does this not have a million views?
I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who picked up on this. I think she has the most beautiful vibrato of any famous living violinist. It makes me wonder if that was a major factor as to why she was chosen to use this violin for the rest of her life.
The violin is it's Players voice, and here we have an very beautiful example for it. Thank you very much.
so beautiful
+Bianca “Beyonce” Love Yes. I think she has the best vibrato in the business!
So true.... Its the best ive heard. Very nice..
Beleza demais!!
That violin is singing..
Incredible music and performance. Is Bach on G String on this violin available for purchase?
I think I am responsible for about fifty of those view hits. *video ends, hits the repeat button*
haha... nice. Keep it up :)
Just wondering.. What did Anne do with the Strad she just purchased in 2010 at auction? thanks
someday I'll be like you.
Karencita Vargas That 's the spirit ! Sure you will. All my good wishes!
oh my god, she's doing it perfectly! i hope that i could do as perfectly as her... even though it might be impossible, hahaha~
it is a nice video anyway^^
Thanks, Desi. Keep working on it! No one starts out as good as a master player like Anne Akiko Meyers.
i wish Amazon would sell this piece as FLAC and not MP3
Why can’t they make violins now like back then?
When a musician has an instrument such as this, how can a human partner compete?
just start at 3:30
Stop
I was trying to figure out the spelling of Henry's name whom Anne mentioned in this interview. The 19th Century violinist. Does anyone know? Thanks and this is lovely!
Henri Vieuxtemps (Belgian violinist, composer) 1820-1881
Can she play Freebird?
3:30
I thought i never say this but i actually think i prefer the Molitor violin. lol
I should not be asking you this question. But, I have noticed that you tend to play bit sad songs which I really like. And you express that sadness or the immortion from your face. Have there been sad situations in your life which you are trying to express when playing? Sorry if I offended you.
Is that a wrong note at the very end of this performance. I've heard it in another performance of Anne's and wonder if it's deliberate or not.
Yep it sounds and looks very deliberate.
It's on purpose. Not a slip
Lol yeah right hahaha
:')
I am in love with your crap you're all enhancing and wishing on life and I am with you and wishing me changing one life at a time beginning with mine and yours thank you for your class craft ideas and you and you're being in in love
I thought she also had a strad? Does she have a genuine strad AND a guarneri????
Kurt S Two genuine Strads, actually, the Royal Spanish and the Molitor, but those are hers. This one was granted to her by an anonymous patron. D.R.
Wow. That's mind blowing. She honestly has it all then. She's so lucky to have the skills and the instruments to match them.
Kurt S The beauty, on top of that, hehehe. D.R.
Ok, nevermind, i like the Guaneri better, it is starting to grow on me. lol
T sei preoccupata molto sulla prima domanda !
she is playing the violin just like Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants
Is that a wrong note played at the very end?
It was an accidental touch
@alohababe007 it was not an "accidental touch"
16 million dollars violin
you know one thing i dont understand. A violin of great value has to be kind of burdensome, because one would have to take measures so that it is not stolen. I mean would you walk down the street with a million dollar violin and just hope that no one tries anything?
se7ensnakes I guess it would be almost impossible to sell, wouldn't it? Who would want to buy a million dollar violin knowing it was stolen? But then again, this could also be said about art, and art is stolen quite often.
Sander van Kuijk I dont think that the criminal mind has such limits
She doesn't just walk down the street with the violin in hand. Of course she has the violin in a case, and who would know that the violin in the case is a million dollar Guarneri?
Joumana Rashad everyone that watches this video and a host of other videos that she claims that it is a million dollar violin.
+se7ensnakes Yeah but not everyone watches these shows with Anne Akiko Meyers in them. I never knew who Anne was or that there were million dollar violins until I started playing the violin myself. She's really famous in the violinist community, and outside it, just not as much as inside it.
Should be played g string
What is G string? That's basic! wrong title! should be:" Air by Bach" not "On G string"!
kamjew
Yea, On G string is a transcript that plays only on violin's G string.
Dustin Liu Edit made. Thanks!
RUDE
Where is the "Air on the G-STRING?" Giving a title which has nothing to do with Bachs composition and then even not following it....funny...
