Loving this series. I have vague memories of the Tripods. Perhaps it was something I read as a kid. Two interesting ones for this month. Great video 😊

Cheers, Debs! I do think that the Tripods series could still work for kids today, it's just not my cup of tea in terms of the world set-up etc, and the prose style isn't for me either. Really looking forward to June's science fiction selections - should be really good, as long as my brain doesn't melt out of my ears again during Solaris! 😂

Showing my age here 😳 but I remember liking The Tripods on telly when I was a kid! I haven’t read the books, but I did enjoy The Death of Grass by John Christopher.

Lol, I just missed out on the tv series - I was a bit young for it when it first aired in 1984. A few years later and it probably would have been something I'd have enjoyed! I'll definitely try some more John Christopher in the future, I like the sound of a few of his adult novels (The Death of Grass included). I've read a couple of his short stories and enjoyed those. The White Mountains just wasn't a good fit for me, I think. Many thanks for watching and commenting! 😀

Too bad about The White Mountains but I guess not super surprising. That's a trilogy that should probably be considered a single book (the prequel is pointless). Not trying to convince you to read on -- life's too short for books that don't do it for you -- but the second and third books do build and pay off. Interesting -- I don't remember Will being annoying (any more than most any teenage character). I'll have to take another gander at some point. Enjoy 2001 and Solaris!

Yeah, The White Mountains just wasn't for me - I'm not a fan of the writing style and the set-up of the world doesn't really grab me that much. Which surprised me a little, I expected to like that element of it. But hey, I'm a mystery. Plus it's always possible that I was in a particularly grumpy mood when I ready it 😉I'll take it from you that the series picks up and pays off in the end!
I don't think Will was probably any more annoying than any teenage character to be honest, and Cassie in 'The 5th Wave' was also irritating in her teenager-ness (probably more so than Will in a lot of ways). But she was also very funny at times, and a lot more relatable. Will just came off as a bit dull to me.
Gonna start 2001 tonight or tomorrow - can't wait, I've got everything crossed that I get on with it!
