I think "dystopian" has more political connotations, I mean, yes, things go to hell, but mostly regarding government. freedom of speech, basic human rights, things among that line. If it is just "things went to hell" it could be, like natural disasters, civilization gone to hell, no government at all, and that will be post-apocalyptic. I think. And those 2 are different genres.
Totalitarian.
Omd u have the same name as meee... Sorry its just this never happens
Yep agree so hard.
That's a nice and well thought distinction, I highly agree.
Also, Dystopian is an older genre and more "adult" reads, while there's a lookout of post apocalyptic YA for the last decade.
With a subgenra of zombies, with World War Z and Walking Dead heavily contributing to the trend.
I disagree, what she said is pretty spot on. Look up the definition of dystopian bro🤦🏻♂️i don’t need to i already know what it means but it seems like you need a refresher cause like she said it could be any reason the world has gone to shit or part of the world went to shit whether it’s due to natural disasters or the government or both or just all out war from all governments it’s all dystopian futures
2:00 Unwind by Neal Shusterman
3:03 Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
3:45 Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
4:53 This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

10:47 The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfield
I literally sit with the Amazon app open when watching these videos and add the books that sounds good to my wishlist
I do the exact same thing.
Same 😂😂😂
Same
Me too!!
Exactly
Dystopian: set in the future, a corrupt government ruins everything
Actually, a dystopian is a place (bad) set in anytime, but usually the future and it doesn't have to have a corrupt government, for example How to Bee, set when the world's bees have died out, it was actually not very bad.
Sounds very much like our present lol
So not so much different that the present
The Legend series is truly amazing.
I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but that shatter me book cover 😍😍😍
Night Wing Oh I do too lol there are certain types of covers that totally draw me in or deter me from books
I got drawn in by that cover and DNFed about halfway through. 😩 I hate when bad books have gorgeous covers.
Technically, judging a book by its cover is the whole point! They design it to appeal to the desired audience! They're literally there to be judged 😊
You should read Shatter Me, it's really fun...Especially when you get to the third book.
Ashley Kendall Yes, they were absolutely atrocious
I really enjoyed the Testing trilogy. It was kind of similar to the Hunger Games but more intellectual testing instead of physical.
Nichole Pace I liked The Testing alot to. I LOVED the Testing itself but I couldn’t get through independence day so i didnt end up reading graduation day. I wish i had likes them though
I got the trilogy and let me tell you, all I had to do was read a little of the sample and I was hooked and I had to get it immediately. I got it and I was so hooked that I couldn’t wait to read what came after. It was a little like hunger games, a little like divergent and a little like maze runner. But it was an amazing book. I’m hoping they’ll turn it into a movie soon. Lol
I am reading the whole series right now, and I hella recommend
Yes I loved the trilogy I couldn’t put them down such a great story
Loved the testing trilogy!
I recommend the Giver Series by Lois Lowry.
It tells stories of this community who grew up within a perfect world. But under the surface, everything isn't so happy-go-lucky.
MaizeMai 13 if you like that one tryout the Matched trilogy the 2nd is Crossed and the 3rd is Reached. Kinda same concept of perfect on the surface. But it's definitely a progressive syfi dystopian
He I'm late but the giver is literally my fav book. I like how it isn't a directly related series meaning it is in the same world at the same time but doesn't us e the same characters though at the end they all are related in some way.
My favourite dystopian series:
- legend by Marie lu
- The darkest minds (DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE, YOU WILL RIP YOUR HAIR OUT!!)
- the maze runner (i only watched the movies, didn't read the books)
- slated (so original and unique!!)
you should really read the maze runner! It goes way more in depth with the characters!
@@amyv9312 I have tried, but I already know the ending and that's putting me off.
@@sidrahyasmin8976 the books are pretty different from the movies
@@cam8921 i have heard, but again I know the overall plot line and that's off putting
OH MY GODS LEGEEENNDD. That book broke me before page 50.😂
I am definitely picking up some of these recommendations that I haven't read yet. I always love a good dystopian book. Side note, I will never forgive Veronica Roth for the ending of Allegiant. lol Take care!
Ahhh!! Why did you have to put this back in my head!! I was crushed!!
I feel u
Same Allegiant was such a disappointment cause i loved divergent
uhm in divergent you also have the faction amity known for their kindness
Rianne Dijkstra ah thank you I knew I was forgetting one!
but those amity people were secretly fed a type of serum that actually calms them without them knowing it...
A really good series I 100% recommend is The Lunar Chronicles. It has 4 books in the series and they get better each time. The characters are based off of fairy tales. For example: Cinderella, little red riding hood, Rapunzel and Snow White. It has a bit sci-fy but like damn. It's action packed with cute couples. It has its own unique plot. I freaking love the series. I'm not the best at review stuff, search it up for better description because I suck. But read it now. You can thank me later.
e l l i e if yoi like those you should read the land of stories and/or fablehaven
Omg when you said "that's where the US is headed with this next presidential debate" I DIED 😂😂😂
MissLexiPaige me too😂😂😂
Same ! ^^ But soooo true !
MissLexiPaige Same but where's the lie 💗😂
That's what my friend said at school when he won XD
How ironic because some Americans is living in fear because of that guy
All of the Unwind books are amazing. You should read the rest they are great!
"everything goes to crap" 😅😅
I was disappointed that you didn't mention Lois Lowry's books, starting with The Giver. Recommend The Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler.
Ah I forgot about The Giver!
Regina Mullen I read those books when I was like 11 and loved all three of them, they are quick reads and just very entertaining
The giver is such a beautiful book
I read the giver in 6th grade and that book changed my whole perspective on life. Such a great book. It's up there with hunger games and anthem for me.
The giver is the only good book in the series. The third book is okay and the second is slow and kinda boring
I love the Divergent trilogy
YESSSSS DIVERGENTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT (sorry I got so hyped when you said "next up is divergent")
Uglies trilogy was the first dystopian I ever read back in middle school before the dystopian craze started and I loved! I've read a few of these but I still need to pick up the darkest minds! Great recommendations :-)
uglies is one of my fav books series. for uglies they also have another book involving it called extras. it was pretty good too.
What is the ugliest about,I’m sorry if I’m being annoying
Same! I just re read them, and I’m on Extras right now. The author is writing another series set in the same universe as Uglies, he’s published the first and second books, Imposters and Shatter City, and he’s working on Mirror’s Edge and the 4th book is unnamed. I read recently that Netflix is picking up the uglies series and Joey King will be starring in it!
Uglies was just so good. I loved it
I recommend Unwind to everyone, I need more people to read it - I adored it!
Yasss
I just finished the last book today. I loved it so much 😭
@@mugglepuff is it scary
@@batoolhams not really. It's not horror scary. It's more like utopia I can't believe this shit is happening scary.
OMG SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME LOVES ALLEGIANT!!!! THANK YOU!!!
rianna reads I actually like Allegiant as well. I thought I was the only one
SERIOUSLY PEOPLE! WHERE ARE YOU ALL COMING FROM?!?! but seriously I appreciate knowing that there are people out there who share a love for famously hated book :)
Allegiant was the BEST!
The thing I like about Allegiant is that the main character died which different from what I was expecting.
I loved it too my fave ever
I LOVE LEGEND SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Legend trilogy is some of the greatest books I have ever read!!!! Love them!!!!
I just finished the Legend Series on Monday and out of all the books I’ve read, which is a lot, it was probably my favorite. I cried, I smiled, I laughed, I put my hand over my eyes and said “why would you do that, that’s stupid” and I’ve had every emotion possible from that book.
Yes Divergent! I loved Allegiant too! I think my favorite dystopian though is Battle Royale by Koushun Takami, it's amazing
The Maze Runner is my favorite book...she just broke me.
That U.S election comment, though...lol! You know we're in trouble when people in other countries know we're in trouble!!
Lmao totally, I live in the middle east in a place where every boom sound can have people on their feet and ready to run and hide, and if one of the candidates gets elected (I won't say who. Hint: they're orange) you're probably going to have it just as bad lol. No offense but your country is kinda screwed.
lol I should not be laughing but oh man, that is scary that you say that!!
ayeletdrago ישראלית? 😅
😑
Allison P I’m not from the US and Trump is the best thing that could ever happened to the States. Unfortunately, this is so hard to understand if you follow the traditional media and don’t know anything about politics.
Oops forgot Amity the Peaceful in the Divergent factions!
I still love dystopians even though I knowwww its a dying trend, I can't get over them!!
great video! my fav is 1984 which is a classic, but it has that scary dystopian element tho its really good!
Manal sha Farenheit 451 😍 and 1984 😍 are my favourite dystopian books
If you love those books try reading Extinction Game by Gary Gibson and the 2nd book is Survival Game. Definitely dystopian syfi but nice and dark and confusing like 1984 haha
I definitely read many dystopian books and have problem to decide which read next. Good to know there are some good titles I haven't read yet. Thanks for this list! :)
I personally love dystopian books. I read the giver and the hunger games in middle school and have been hooked since then.
Unwind series is awesome ! Read the whole thing and if u have an e reader , this book serries has links where the author pulls in real world facts/perhaps inspiration.
I just read unwind and loved it!!
I needed to order part 2 right away!
My top dystopian books:
-mortal engines, predators gold, infernal devices and a darkling plain by Philip Reeve
-night flights by Philip Reeve
-fever crumb, a web of air and scrivener’s moon by Philip Reeve
-girls with sharp sticks by Suzanne Young
-road to winter by Mark Smith
MAZE RUNNER IS AMAZING!! But yeah maybe that's not your cup of tea! #DashnerArmy #MazeRunnerIsLife
Ameda Newtmas OMG IM watching the vid and it's the intro right now and I'm holding the maze runner
Ameda Newtmas #DashenrArmy I'm actually reading the fever code right now😂❤️
Ameda Newtmas i don 't hate the maze runner but it's Okay to me
valeria Ah lucky you! I still haven't got my copy. Can't find it.
Namfon Yay Go #DashnerArmy!
Unwind is my FAVORITE book of all time
I literally love the shatter me series with all my heart
The legend series is the best set of books I have ever read other that Brandon Sandersons books and Isaac asimofs books
Specsavers i have been recommended that a lot just haven’t gotten around to reading it
it’s my fav series lol
I think that you should have included the Scythe series as a recommendation
Yesssss
the uglies series is such a throwback, i read them so so long ago and now want to read them again
Yes!!!! Unwind is an amazing series, my favorite, highly recommend
Also another great dystopian series is the Young Elites series by Marie Lu. It goes into the side of the villains and the heroes and really uses the metaphor that is the book to truly understand our deepest darkest fears and actions :)
Did you know the Uglies series has a 4th almost spin-off book called Extras? I loved the original trilogy, but Extras turned out to be my favorite because all of the parallels it has to our world as it is now. You don't need to reread the original trilogy because they do little more than name drop the old characters. You should pick it up!
My civics teacher actually introduced us to the Unwind series a couple years ago. She showed the whole class a short film about it and I was hooked from then on. It's a great series and so much happens and I had so many emotions while reading this.
Legend series is one of my personal favorite series ever
UnWind is my absolute favorite Dystopia, read the whole thing it only gets better. WAY better
I've had the Unwind ebook for a while but didn't even think of reading it... but THE WAY YOU DESCRIBED IT WAS SO COOL!!! I will read it!
Ah I love Unwind, I love the whole series. It's worth finishing they get so much better
dystopian trilogies go like this:
1st book: amazing, perfect, really good
2nd book: either better than the first book or 10x worse, no inbetween
3rd book: the most boring thing I've ever read in my entire life
Lmao, that's so valid
I am SO DEFINITELY using this as a source for my termpaper in Dystopian novels 😂
Oh my god! How did I not know that unwind was a series.. I read this book such a long time ago (must have been in junior high) and I loved it!!
I loved the legend trilogy too! I knew I wasn't crazy it is good but some people think it's unoriginal which isn't true (to me anyway) since its plot and plot twist were so different from others. It holds a special place in my heart.☺️❤️
You should totally finish reading the Unwind dystology.. It's my favourite series of all time, it's just amazing x It would be such a shame not read the other three. Unwind definitely does NOT get enough credit, such a shame :( x (love your videos by the way, your collection is brilliant) x
Am I the only one who loves Allegiant? It's actually my favourite of the three 💖 Yeah the ending is heartbreaking but the whole book is just great.
I read unwind in 6th grade which was 2 years ago and then flew through the next three and then a new one came out less than a year ago on my birthday.
i just finished the 5th book of Shatter Me and gaaaawd its so good
I love all the Americans that want to come to Canada. We already knew we were awesome but this election makes us look even better ❤️ 🇨🇦
Yeah, I'm really wanting to move to Canada. It seems a lot of awesome people are from Canada! 😃
Not really.
Ik you posted this 2 years ago, but if you guys welcomed me I would LOVE to live in Canada, the US is not doing good 😂
Did you ever read Delirium? I didn't really like those books, but they're worth a try.
Sophie the Jedi Knight
Yeah, I was in love with it when I was younger but now that I go back to it I think..it was ok...idk why I made such a huge fuss about it, maybe it's because now I've read better.
Sophie the Jedi Knight yes it is so good
ready player one has been on my TBR for so long!! have to get to it :p
This video is the reason I'm a reader now
love and have read almost all of these series. the testing trilogy is AMAZING and deserves far more credit and recognition than it currently gets.
UNWIND!!! YASSSSSSS, READ THE SECOND BOOK!!!
Utopian and dystopian are not completely opposite, actually dystopian is an utopian society which has been too far with its "harmonious" rules ! :D
Marie Alhinho yep! That is going on now in the eastern europe bcs we live in post communism
Yepp. Every utopia is a dystopia
Great recommendations. I'm going to pick some of these up, even though they are classified as YA . I feel they can be read by adults as well
Oh yes, indeed!
Patrick Ness, Hugh Howey, and I could think of around 1o to 15 really outstanding series that read this way. (Not in this list though, astonishingly enough)
I recommend The City Of Ember! I’ve only read the first book, but it was the first ever dystopian book that I read back when I was in fourth grade. I don’t remember much from it, but I remember really enjoying it!!
Yessss Legend series is my favorite!!!!! You also need to read The Testing series by Joelle Charbonneau and The Fifth Wave series (forget author😂)
If you like unwind you should read the rest of the series there’s 3 other books, as well as his arc of the scythe trilogy
The unwind dystology is absolutely amazing i highly recommended!
I love, love, love the Maze Runner trilogy. It's not like anything I've ever read before (but then again I haven't read too many dystopians). There's lots of twists and turns and unexpected things happening. I highly recommend it.
There’s a new book in the shatter me series called restore me and more to come you should totally read it xxxxx
Pippa. m yes! I was so shocked by it and now I’m reading Defy Me
Omg YESS.. Unwind!!! It is fucking amazing.. You should continue the unwind series!! It gets betterrrrr
Uglies is amazing!
Ya I'm glad your in Canada maybe I'll meet you or see you someday because I love your videos and you're so awesome!
Ready player one is insanely good! Highly recomend as well!
Super fun book
Divergent is lesser known....?
Julia Francis than the hunger games, yeah.
Not all the books are lesser known. I said I tried to include lesser known ones in here.
Unwind is a great book!
The only problem I had with Allegiant is; I could not tell the difference between Four and Tris. Their heads were so similar
Back in middle school I read Uglies for a school project, and it was decent but I wasn't in a rush to read the next books. I always feel so incomplete when I move on from an unfinished series, but idk... are the books after Uglies on the same level as Uglies, or better? If it's on the same level I might ditch them, tbh...
'Prey World' by A. Merow is also a great dystopian series from Germany
Finally someone has heard of unwind
Is it scary?
@@batoolhams Not really. I guess it depends on how old you are? It’s not horror it’s just dystopian. So if you didn’t find other dystopians scary you won’t find this one scary.
I remember reading The Hunger Games in 8th grade and it was a require reading. I got really excited when the movie came out after that lol.
divergent is definitely my fave dystopia I don't care what others think
YES the divergent book was the best I loved it it’s my favourite book ever
A few good one's are Angelfall by Susan Ee and Flawed by Cecelia Ahern
omg OMG please read shatter me they are AMAZING!!! Alsooo there are 5 shatter me books now and another coming out next year. It is my all time favorite series favorite book series!
Unwind is definitely one of the best. Should really check out "The Blackest Blue" by Luna Wright. Has great reviews and was really good IMHO.
DELIRIUM
If you haven't, read The Handmaid's tale. It's stunning
If you're a fan of Amy Tintera's Reboot series and others and you want more of them, they have a new series and the first book is All These Monsters and it's part of a duology and I heard it's pretty good. It's not part of the Reboot duology though. Also Scott Westerfeld has a new series that jumps off and continues the Uglies series which is called Imposters. The newest conclusion to the series is coming next year so now is the time to read it!
Also have you read the bonus book Extras? It seems interesting.
You missed the best one of them all....... The maze runner series, maze runner/scorch trials/death cure.
Honestly I just loved every aspect of that book. I love how the bad guys aren't actually bad but the good buys arnt actually good and it was just an amazing read with tons of feelings
masterpieces. my all time favorites, as well :)
one of my favorite dystopian book series was the last survivors series. Each book is told from a different perspective the first is a girl from Connecticut the second is told from a guy in new York city, the third is told from the same girl meeting the guy from new York and the final book is told from the girl's brother. It is about what happens to these characters after a meteor hits the moon and brings it closer to the earth and it cause volcano eruptions and massive tidal waves and it kind of gets you thinking if this were to happen how would you survive?
shit. when she showed shatter me series, i literally jumped so hard because i have started reading the first book today and i am loving it so so so much. i hope it keeps getting better
Unwind is sooooo good
I just find you with this video, and I can't help myself to subscribe you and watch your playlists. I really like how you speak about books and that energy got me. Thank you🤩
This Savage Song is definitely a dystopian! I enjoyed it quite a bit. (August Flynn is a puppy)
I also loved The Darkest minds and Legend!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ready Player One!! I actually got to meet Ernest Cline a few weeks ago when he came to my college and he was so nice! I am so lucky that I have a personalized signed copy and this book will always have a special place in my heart.
Try one called This Perfect Day by Ira Levin.
9:30 LOVE THIS.
I absolutely love dystopian and I wonder if you have read any of these series? These are all between 2 and 8 in the series.
1.) Birthmarked series by Caragh M OBrian.
2.)Article 5 series by Kristen Simons
3.) Forager series by Peter R Stone
4.) Lush series by S.L. Baum
5.) True Calling series by Siobhan Davis
6.) Wasteland Chronicles (8 books) by Kyle West
7.) Emerge series by Heather Sunseri
8.) Foreverland series by Tony Bertauski
9.) Yesterday's Gone series (or seasons as the writers refer to them) by Sean Platt and David Wright.
I live in the U.S., and I am scared for the upcoming election. By the way, you always give such amazing recommendations. Thanks so much!
Tess, grow up.
Thanks for your insights on these books! You should check out the dystopian post-apoc survival series the Three Sisters Trilogy.
THE DARKEST MINDS 🤩😍🤩😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Do you know the movie for the book "unwind"?
Oh I Just noticed it's a different movie, but has the same topic :D It is called "Never let me go"
Never Let Me Go is also based on a book (of the same name) and both the book and the film are very good in my opinion! If you haven't read Never Let Me Go and get the chance I'd definitely recommend it :)
