THE BODY SNATCHERS by Jack Finney | Science fiction for the somewhat hesitant, No. 16
For the second of my August classic science fiction reads I devoured 'The Body Snatchers' by Jack Finney! I also had a look at a couple of the film adaptations, both called 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' - one from 1956 and the other from 1978.
So, what's my verdict on the novel and both of the movie adaptations?

I remember the 70’s film terrifying me as a kid. There was also a TV series ‘The Invaders’ from the 60’s that I used to watch as a teenager. This type of horror has always scared me, people not being who they should be. An episode of Hammer House of Horror gave me nightmares for a long time, I think it was called ‘The two faces of evil’ great 80’s horror in the vein of body snatchers. I will definitely be reading the book!

Funny you're talking about Salem's Lot. I did a bookstore tour today searching for the new Vintage paperback edition -- they picked up that book, Carrie, and The Shining and reissued them here in the States all with kind of garish old-school covers, clearly influenced by Paperbacks from Hell. Found all three of them, although I didn't buy them. It was tempting, though -- their spines are exceptionally gorgeous together on a shelf. Also noticed the new Olive Books edition of The Exorcist with its very creepy and kind of hilarious cover and was pleasantly surprised to see it's the original 1971 text. Vintage, take note: release the original version of The Stand! Sorry, this comment was longer than your entire vlog. Glad you're loving The Body Snatchers!

There are several small press publishers who are doing wonderful things with the shorter lengths. While I can't claim to have read anywhere near all of the novella length books from these publishers, I've yet to find a bad one. The first is Luna Press' series of excellent novellas, then the not so small press PS Publishing, specifically their Absinthe Books line of novellas, and lastly, Black Shuck Books' Shadows line of short books. I've just started a very short collection of short stories in that series, by Teika Maija Smits, called Waterlore, which looks to be excellent so far.

Well... Chuck was a pioneer of serial publication, often ending instalments of his stories to keep readers in suspense and encouraging them to buy the next instalment. Very commercial. On that basis, Dickens IS trash. Just sayin' 😜 My September pile of possibilities will be revealed tomorrow - I think you'll find it acceptable. No Dickens or Tolstoy, but hardly any trash. And a couple you'll definitely approve of heartily!

Thanks, Cliff! It’s been a fab GarbAugust so far! Death Cult is a really quick fun read, the cannibal side of thing grossed me out just the right amount 😂 Horror Smut definitely surprised me but there is one story in it that turned into a bit of a ‘brain slug’ - it’s still squelching its way around my head leaving slimy trails wherever it goes. I can’t get rid of it… 🥴 Yuk.

  • @arockinsamsara

I also read a book by Christine Morgan this GarbAugust, though not quite as scandalous as Horrorsmut. It was her addition to the Splatter Western series, a novella called _The Night Silver River Run Red,_ and it was fun... The short story you mentioned sounds familiar, I was wondering if maybe it was included in a different anthology I read, but I couldn't find it... "Single guy at bar goes home with someone out of his league, horror ensues" is a pretty common premise, so I must be thinking of something else. 🤷‍♂ Glad you had a good week!

I saw Morgan’s western novella when I was looking at what else she’s written - looks good! I’ll definitely read some more of her stuff, she can definitely bring fun to the proceedings! Yep that premise is rather common! The ‘final act’ of the one in Horror Smut (“Nice Girls Swallow”) was a nice fun twist, it wasn’t groundbreaking or anything but it was a solid execution of this particular trope. I enjoyed the characters in it too. It was definitely one of the least extreme stories included, and was at a good point in the collection where I was ready for something a little bit less gruesome/bebauched! Hope you’re still enjoying your GarbAugust reading and aren’t too trashed out!

@@alex_unabridged Her splatter wstern was fun, I reviewed it recently (along with Chandler Morrison's). I actually think it could have been served by being a little longer, and giving me more time with the characters I liked and spending some more time building up other characters, she definitely had the grist for another 40 pages, I think. Still, it was fun, and probably better to get out early and leave 'em wanting than overstay your welcome. There were a couple of zine libraries represented at the festival, they had some older zines on show - they were fabulous, and have real cultural/historical value too. Looking forward to making some of my own - I've made a few in the past but not for a long time!

So...I had to look up what a zine was....Why have I not heard of this term?...is it my age? (old man!)...is it my location? (midwest US)... I am excited for you that you now have quick internet!

Lol, zines are a little niche, until recently they've been mainly part of a sub-culture of DIY publishing though they've seen a bump in popularity in recent years. I wouldn't call them mainstream but they're less underground than they were! I love them, they're so often very playful and the creator's personality usually really shines through in them. 😀

The flannel will probably feature more regularly again now that we appear to be done with summer in the UK, have skipped autumn and are apparently back in winter. This sounded good to me, so I went to project gutenberg to see if it was there. There are 9 works by John W. Campbell, but this was not one of them. It also mentioned he wrote under the name 'Don A. Stuart" but no luck there either! At any rate, I will keep my eyes open for it! By chance, was this included in a larger work which I may be missing?

@@alex_unabridged I ended up doing an audio-recording of it. I enjoyed it! For me, the drawback of audiobooks is that they don't give you time to stop and "digest" if there a particularly descriptive or captivating line of prose. I do, however, consume numerous books per year on audio. I had watched "The Thing" back in the early '80's when it came out so I had a bit of context, but my memory is not the greatest as far as picking out areas where it was & was not faithful to the book. Thanks!

Busting out the flannels in August -- do you time them to coincide with Starbucks' pumpkin spice season? 😉 As a writer, you might get something out of Frozen Hell, Campbell's initial take on Who Goes There? And I'm a huge fan of first film, The Thing from Another World, although it is a much looser adaptation than Carpenter's.

Ah, thanks for all the nostalgia feels with the Action Comic. All very macho but I lapped it up as a boy. For someone that seemed to be born with feet for hands and hands for feet these publications let me live out my fantasies of saving the day or scoring the winning goal. My personal favourite was the 1980’s version of Eagle. Two strips by the artist José Ortiz ( absolutely love all his work) appeared: The House of Daemon and The Tower King. I’d highly recommend both. I’m sure they can be found on the inter webs somewhere 😂 Hope you have a better health week and it’s always a pleasure to see Marv!
