I'm pretty sure I recommended "Into the Drowning Deep," and I am glad you enjoyed it! I had a blast when I read it (and have tended to like whatever I read by Mira Grant, including her Newsflesh and Parasitology trilogies). It was a chunky book, I agree. I usually don't like an abrupt ending but I thought it worked here. There felt like a slow build-up that kind of insisted there was only one way it could go, but then once that ending came there wasn't really anywhere else to go, so it felt like it had to end when/how it did, denouement be damned. I don't remember the parentheses, nor being turned off by any of the writing conventions, so I guess it just didn't feel strange to me since it didn't leave any impression one way or the other. I have not read anything she has written as Seanan McGuire, which I believe to be her work that is more in the fantasy and romance (and maybe YA?) realms, Mira Grant being her pseudonym for her work that lives deeper in horror territory...
And I can't say I'm surprised at your joy with Becky Chambers, everything she writes seems to be a really great combination of engaging ideas, complicated and deep characters, and just a lot of heart.

Ah yes, it was your recommendation I believe! Thank you, it was a really fun read! I’ll definitely be checking out more of Grant’s work, have added several to my wish list already! Any particular book/series you’d recommend I should go for next?
The parentheses weren’t a put-off so much as a convention that pulled my attention because it was new to me - it made me wonder why it was used (from a writing perspective). I generally really enjoyed Grant’s style tho, it’s very easy to get into and the sense of humour in the book is great! And the diversity of characters was excellent, I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of characters who used sign language, that was well done 👍
Thanks again for the fab recommendation 😀

I’ve been enjoying Becky Chambers lately as well. Just finished book 2 in the Wayfarers series, which was really different, but I liked just as much fun as the first. Hoping to read Solaris soon!

I don't know if that was me but I ALWAYS recommend Into The Drowning Deep! It's one of my favourite books everrrrrr and I'm so happy you gave it a 8/10! I hadn't noticed its similarities to Meg but you are sooo right and maybe that's why I love both haha I didn't notice the parenthesis because I did it on audio... which I highly recommend btw and I think it helps with the info dump.
Solaris is really high on my sci-fi TBR and now I'm excited!

Oh cool! I don’t think it was you (I suspect I’d remember if it was!) but it would have been a fab recommendation! It was so much fun 😀 I imagine it’s really good as an audiobook, I might have to look for it on sale on audible at some point. Have already recommended it to my sister who I think will love it, and I’ll probably get my niece a copy too!
Hope you enjoy Solaris! It’s a mind melter in a great way! 🫠
