Regarding the displaying of the 10 Commandments in schools, I don't think school sponsored theologies, regardless of the religion or belief should be displayed in public schools. With that said, I do believe students though should be allowed to display the 10 Commandments, or whatever their beliefs are; if they so choose of their own volition due to the protections of the 1st amendment of the Bill of Rights.
As a former public school teacher, I thought this was illegal. Separation of church and state is violated. You want the Commandments, pay the ridiculous money to send your kids to private school. We DO have to adhere to “in locus parentis” (not sure of Latin spelling). We have to adhere to community standards on moral issues, specifically, in the absence of their parents, follow the expectations OF their parents. However, federal law supercedes here. You cannot use public dollars for religious purposes in public schools in the US, legally. ( One has to admit, though, many, or most, of the Ten Commandments underlie US laws.)
Separation of church and state is not in the constitution. I suggest reading the whole context of the letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote with respect to that phrase.
Well said Gentleman... Religion is taught in church and from your parents at home, not in public school...and I grew up with the KJV ten commandments... "One nation under God" is where Government ends...the interpretation of that is up to individual beliefs...unless you want to become a theocracy like Iran.
I think kids should have a religious class where they are introduced to basics of all religions. A pillar of all religious affiliations class. Just a basic overview, open their minds.
Maybe every church should be inspired to display the Ten Commandments out front in big, eye catching letters. Wouldn’t potentially violate the 1A but a lot more people still might see them.
As an American no. No state sponsored religion period. Teaching about religion in the context of history is okay but, posting things like this to include lgbt, political, or other religious materials is wrong.
That would be a Hebrew to English mis-translation of the 6th commandment. The Book of Exodus or Shemot as written in the Hebrew Language, a part of the Torah; the proper Hebrew to English for the 6th commandment would be, "you shall not murder." “This is due to, in the Hebrew language, the 6th commandment is written "lo tirtsah;" with the verb ratsah meaning ‘murder,’ and not ‘kill,’ this has been incorrectly taught a very long time in English speaking cultures. One explanation for this that I have seen explained is because of when the King James Bible was being translated, the clergy at that time in the 17th century that were doing the translating; Hebrew was not their first language. So, they mistook the verb for to murder to mean to kill.
Why do they feel the need to put this in school? Anyone with a brain knows that religious freedom can always be practiced- through personal prayer, through the way we treat others, and so on. There doesn’t even need to be a debate. No one can take away integrity- it can only be given. Teach your children morals at home and teach them how to practice them in every situation.
We have been raised with the phrase "separation of church and State" and believe that it's saying that religion of any kind should not mingle with functions of state. Could we have that wrong? It can't be argued that the US was founded largely from Christian ideals and morals and the laws of our land illustrate that. If religion was truly to be completely separate from that would God be mentioned in our Declaration? I believe the intent of "separation of church and State" was that the Church should have no sway over the governance of the state. Remember, our founders knew and understood history. They saw the results of religion being the governing body, but believed in the God all father and the lessons from him. That long thought to say. Religion was in schools well into the 20th century and was only removed by SCOTUS. So, if the Founding Fathers intended for religion to not be in schools due to Separation of Church and State why didn't they shut it down then?
Absolutely not. It's unconstitutional, period. I want my kids to learn at school, not become indoctrinated by ancient fairytales. Keep it to yourself, and I will respect your "faith." Try and push it on others, and we have a problem.
It’s counterintuitive to send your kids to a school that teaches them about the world and different cultures and history but they’re not allowed to teach religion, that’s the reason people have a terrible understanding of how the world works and thinks that everyone acts and thinks like we do in the US. PS they’re teaching them about anal sex but love your neighbor and no murder is a no go
“Ancient fairytales” is so exposing…regardless of what you believe those “fairy tales” illustrate profound truths about your humanity and the world you live it. Your are, clearly, more ignorant than you would be if you studied and understood the lessons in those fairytales. This is exactly why this should be in school…you can’t believe in American Principles if you don’t first understand the principles they were founded on…Judeo-Christian values.
This country was founded on Judeo Christian principles and I believe reverencing those founding principles publicly makes sense. The fact that we can have these discussions publicly is a direct byproduct of Christian principles in action. It doesn’t mean we have to put up every other creed side by side - because there were only certain creeds that were foundational to the birth of the nation. Everyone should know where we started.
A resounding NO - the US is not a religious theocracy like Iran for example and its a slippery slope towards intolerance and authoritarianism. Parents need to do their job, while schools and such follow commonsense principles of a civilized democratic society which by and large follow christian values without the religious overtones. btw this is why separation of church and state is so important. Religious freedoms are a cornerstone of a healthy society and is a private personal matter not governed or dictated to by Government or laws.
Separation of church and state wasn’t about denying God, it was about Congress( yes federal congress, not states) deciding that the only true church was catholic, episcopal, Baptist etc. Not about booting the Christian faith that our country was based on. We are in the moral collapse that we are in because we have turned our back not only on God, but the values of the Bible and teaching our children the importance of the Bible
4200 recognized religions in the world and the one thing they all have in common, they think they are the only ones that is right. 1200 Christian denominations, 900 digital versions or variants of the bible.
