    As a Jamaican, I am assuming that more than half of the population can’t swim, let alone snorkel. Hence, lots of Jamaicans miss out on enjoying some of the wonderful marine life our Island has to offer.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 года назад +7

      Do you think Jamaicans would be happy to learn to swim and snorkel? I think a lot of the fear comes from parents teaching kids that the sea is dangerous 🤔, which dragged on and on from several hundreds years ago, at least this is what some books suggest.

    • @johnl6838
      @johnl6838 3 года назад +7

      @@JAMAICAWITHIRIE , yes I think they would love to learn, given the opportunity. The vast majority of us Jamaicans we didn’t learn because our parents, and grandparents couldn’t swim, I think the fear of the water came from the trans Atlantic slave trade, slaves were fearful of the water and that fear was passed on. I learned to swim in my twenties after I left Jamaica, and I have made sure that my children learned also. One love from NYC.

    now 80 still dive , I recognize all the fish there asI used to have a MARINE AQUARIUM before diving ( 70s ) stay well cheers 🇮🇨🇬🇧🇯🇲🇺🇸

    Its true a lot of Jamaicans can not swim including myself. We were never encouraged to do so by our parents. Just the news about someone drowning send so much fear our parents would tell us never to go into the water. Then come the movie JAWS . That sealed it for me. But it’s one thing on my to do list. Nice video iris 👍👍

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 года назад +3

      the irony of the situation is so sad.. people are drowning in Jamaica precisely because they don't know how to swim, but the news stories about these tragic events prevent people from learning to swim, which in turn leads to more tragic events... I'm really thinking of organizing free swimming lessons by the beach to inspire people to learn to swim in Jamaica, especially kids, because it would be so much fun for them and so easy to learn while they are still young and haven't watched the "jaws" film!

    Another awesome video Irina. Your Observation is correct most Jamaican women won't take those underwater risks. They run from every creature on land like lizard, roach , rat or frogs. Underwater would be a whole other experience . Conversely for the women there that do, like Jessica you have great outcomes. Like a worldclass Olympic swim champion, whose name is Atkinson i believe. Most Janaicans love the beach but as others in this vlog says its not that easy to get there, especially if you live inland. I would place a bet that there are some mature Jamaicans there now who has NEVER gone to the ocean or beaches of this beautiful island. My first time was a school trip in my teens and after experiencing the ocean and coastal living i chose to work in Montego Bay even though i was from the hilly interior. Again great video and as usual exposing us to other parts of our beautiful island which we need to know more about. One love Irina!

    Another Excellent Video, and great Collaboration with Jessica (I have now subscribed to her Channel, and will start watching her videos). So true about how many (if not most) Jamaicans can't swim. I grew up on the North Coast in St. Ann, and used to go to a Beach in St. Ann's Bay (now long gone); but I NEVER learned to swim until I was in College in the United States, at age 19 (Passing a Swim Test was a requirement for Graduating; so I took Swimming for Gym / P.E., and learned then).
    But here's the thing: I can swim, and LOVE being in the water; I even have my own Goggles and Snorkel. We even have a medium size above ground pool at home. I can swim around for long periods with the Goggles / Snorkel, without stopping. But I don't think I would EVER go "Snorkeling"; even as Amazing as it seems to be. Why? Because I "hate" being in water over my head for a long period of time. I think it's because I almost drowned in a pool (in the USA) as a Teenager, BEFORE I learned to swim. Surprisingly, I "struggled" my way out without anyone realizing I was in "trouble".
    But this video sure makes me want to "try" and overcome this "fear" to give snorkeling a try.

      Thank you so much for the feedback! You don't have to be in water over your head though. There are many places in Jamaica where sea is just like a pool, but with gorgeous corals and shallow enough not to worry. If you managed to learn to swim and love being in water despite the accident as a teenager in the past - wow, this means you already overcame the major part of your fear. Snorkeling can be easier than just swimming because of a more natural body position (neck doesn't hurt). What's more, it's always easier to swim/snorkel in the sea than in a pool, because the sea pushes you up due to thicker density, caused by salt. As I'm sure you know Dead Sea is so salty, that you can "sit" in it. Caribbean sea is not as salty, yet even if you dive really deep, the sea water will keep pushing you up all the time, that's why we use fins - it's to be able to stay down for at least a little longer, else the Sea "spits us out" :)))

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 года назад

      Thank you, glad you liked the video! As for Port Royal, nobody is allowed to swim at the sunken city of Port Royal, unless they are a part of archaeological expedition and have a permission from Jamaican National Heritage Trust. The other problem is that there is nothing to see there. All buildings were destroyed long time ago by several earthquakes after the initial one. Whatever remained -consists of a few foundations that are covered by 300 years of sewage. Sadly. United Nations together with JNHT are working together now to find a way to rebuild the place under water, but so far with no result.

    Yes Irie very beautiful, I use to be an active snorkelor, I live in Old Harbour but the water in that area is no as clear. I also do research on US WW2 bases in Jamaica ( Vernam Field and Goat Island) knows about afew WW2 planes crashes but one in particular I can mention. B-26 bomber crashed near Rocky Piont during a training mission out of Vernam Field in 1945. It' would be too deep for the average snorkeler 30 feet but I meet eye witnesses and know about the men on board and was contacted by a family member in the US.
