Hello, as a Jamaican, I want to thank you for providing practical and intelligent videos on Jamaica. I was getting sick and tired of all the moronic videos which only appear to feature the person making the video. I / we appreciate that your videos are about Jamaica and not about you.
The government could solve the high beam driving problem. All they has to do is put up street lights on the highway using solar to power them at nights. The more lights you have on the highway the less need for high beam driving.
Rented a car at Kingston airport and drove to St Thomas. Worst experience I ever had, people speeding, roads narrow, no street lights and on top of that.....it was raining and nighttime. Another occasion, rented from same airport to Ocho Rios. Very pleasant ride on the highway. 4 wheel drive is recommended.
Exactly, very good point made! The experience may differ drastically depending on where you go, when you go and all sorts of circumstances. Thank you for sharing 👍👍👍
Most of st Thomas road is very bad or should I say it's like a river bed pure stones and pot holes. I dont eat when I know I'm going on that road. The other day I saw a truck squeezed this lady off the road all I could do is watch and scream some peoples driving skills is next to nothing, they dont have no patience at all and they dont know how to dim lights while driving at night they're crazy. To drive in jamaica you better be attentive at all times ok .

Hello Irena Thank you for such positive spins on Jamaicann attractions. What I like most of all about your videos is that if you speak positively about any negatives. Good work
I was in Jamaica last week and rented a Toyota Carolla from Budget at the MBJ airport for 8 days. Total was $499.00 with an additional $200.00 downpayment that I got back at the end of the rental. The $499 included Lost Damage Insurance that releases you of any liability if you have an accident or the car is stolen.
yep, this sounds right! I usually rent Suzuki Swift or Suzuki Celerio (like in the video), it's a bit smaller, but cheaper. I hope you had a good time in Jamaica!
I usually rent from island car rental and if you use a discover credit card, it carries the insurance to protect the vehicle, so you don’t have to buy the additional insurance, and yes it covers fully I total lost or stolen
Michelle, yeah, Budget in Mobay is the Company I rent from. Being doing so for YEARS. Great People and Great Service. Always a good idea to get all the Coverages too (especially the Wheel and Tire Damage Coverage; cane in very handy for me TWICE so far).
You're the best, Irina. I am currently grappling with the same dilemma. I rented a car for one day from the airport. I arrived in Jamaica on Saturday from the US. I am a Jamaican by birth. Left Jamaica many years ago, though. Never drove in Jamaica before. Find it easy, except I hit the curb at least one time, yesterday, I blew I tire. Fell in a large pot hole. Could you cover the pot hole situation in Jamaica sometime? It drives me crazy. I am in Kingston. My husband who is American by birth freaks out when he sees the bad drivers, and when I have to dodge so many of them. Thanks for all your help and advise. 😲
I have no problem driving in Jamaica when I visit , I travel from Kingston to Clarendon, my only problem is there is not enough sign to let u now we’re u are even when the gps say to turn on certain street
Thank you Irie. That’s so true about google maps. I encountered a situation like that when I went out with my friends. Some short cuts are actually long cuts 😂.
In 2017 i visited jamaica and decided to head to port antonio from kingston .....i decided to travel through the blue mountains instead of the usual st mary route....i used google maps and was very surprised and pleased to know that it worked perfectly.....
IRENA, HI THERE, being born in JA, I learned to drive there, getting my drivers license in USA, was,,,different, but returningI usually had a relatives vehicle to use, but there were times I rented, ALWAYS a MANUAL SHIFT, always had a great time, I heard that someone made a GPS for JAMAICA, ESSO used to have the best maps those days . Google printed maps, the ONLY time I used it, made me buy a TOM TOM GPS, now on my 6th one , they had NEVER LET ME DOWN, but I ALWAYS did a quick display to see if I might go elsewhere , after constantly changing part of my route, they called me asking if I would mind the using my route, said sure, it cut out 30 minutes to get a highway , which they going to send me to ! & life goes on.! Great production as usual, I like how you've explaining and expressing every thing about Jamaica, I was worried about many things coming out of Jamaica for a long time; now I can see there are nothing to worry about. Thank you very much.
I'm an experienced driver in U. S. The problem for me was two. Small roads and driving on the left. Was destined to be total confusion if I were to rent a car as planned when I land Kingston 2018. Meaning bad idea. And yes, keep the passenger side inna di bush. The round abouts are easy enough. They are biased to the left. Where North American ones are biased right. So driveway sized roads coupled with left driving are a brain melt down if you are not prepared. So you have to observe for at least a few days before attempting. As a seasoned driver.
i personally think you are the right person to talk about my country, why, because you're not from there and because of that people from other country can get an honest opinion about jamaica and what it is really about

Thank you for such an informative video. I'm Jamaican but has never driven in Jamaica. I've only ever experienced driving in the US and I'm a bit worried about driving on the roads of my own country lol. My husband is the more experienced driver (also never driven in Jamaica) but I'll likely let him drive when we come there in June. Your video shed some light on the things we worry about and I'm glad we came across your channel!
Many years ago I discovered Reich Falls in Manchioneal and we were blown away such a beautiful waterfall being enjoyed by tourists that locals did not know about. After that my friends and I started touring even just visiting different parishes to visit the locals now I live in the USA and will not be able to do for now. When I retire this is something I will resume I love driving in Jamaica and the views I see while driving keep up the good work Irena I have seen all of your videos more than once.
I learned to drive while growing up in Jamaica and I was told if you can drive here you can drive anywhere in the world. That was 20 plus years ago and back then half the drivers were drunk I mean seriously you would drive by bars and see police cars parked out front and they would be in there drinking and playing dominoes lol 😂😂😂
Night driving is a nightmare in certain areas in Jamaica. When I leave the Airport and get a rental it's usually after 6 pm, my journey is to get to Ocho Rios which is an hour and a half driving . The glare from drivers using full beam heading towards you is very scary, I usually tried to flash them but you are totally ignored but you do get the odd one that dips their light but very rare
I assume you mean travelling from Kgn airport to Ochi. If that is so, AVOID the established road through Linstead/Moneague and so on. Use the Toll road, because of the concrete barrier separating northbound from southbound, headlight glare isn't an issue. The toll road is a great deal safer and faster.
(While watching the adds) 45 dollar is quite sturdy prices per day, also good to know to drive on the left, valueable information. Google map is troublesome then..good to know. The gas prices are ok compared to europe , euro95 is here 2,50 euro and diesel 1,30 in holland. Narrow roads, in amsterdam they park the hummers and suvs even there. Fortunately Jamaica is not overload with bikes. Thanks for comparison with other countries like india and china. It does seem doable. Thank you very much for sharing and showing the traffic everywhere in jamaica it helped a lot!
Great work Irina! When I was visiting for 10 days in January, I rented a car. My cousin had me load the Waze driving app for directions. It worked great. Though I consider myself to be a great driver (like most self-critical people😉) I had another cousin do most of the driving. It allowed for some relaxed sight-seeing on my short stay from snow-bound Canada. I'd be doing the same on my next trip. Please, keep your videos coming!
This was very informative. I drive whenever I visit Jamaica. It really isn't as bad as people think. I do agree that if you are not accustomed to narrow roads it may be intimidating, but doable. The good thing is, there's always the option of public transportation or private driver.
Thank you Irena for another informative and upbeat video. I believe you were born to vlog, i alsl believe you would make a remarkable teacher. G9d bless. Walk good.
Toronto Canada AKA The 6ix🇨🇦 First I want to say Love your Channel it's refreshing to see a positive look on Jamaica🇯🇲 Have you ever thought of working for the Taurus board🤔 😅 Driving on the left side is not the real issue" and it's not as easy as you make it sound🤨 For a lot of people from foreign countries that are used to Bright lights and big cities may not find this so easy! First you have to get used to high bushes and overbearing trees dark Road potholes and narrow streets you have to honk your horn around deadly corners😧 not to mention Bridges with no guardrails!! These are just a few things that may not be so easy for everyone 🤨 But keep up the good work and respect 💯
Thank you for your feedback! Glad you like the videos! Yeah, driving at night is indeed a challenge, that's why I suggest not to do it :))) But yeah, all the other things you've mentioned are real! You're right, not easy for everyone! I'm comparing Jamaica with other places where I had experience driving, like Egypt, Indonesia, India..pfff, Jamaica is so much easier! But if we compare driving in Jamaica with..Canada - sure, Jamaica won't stand the competition! Then again.. any country fails at everything, when compared to Canada, lol! Apart from the weather.. 🤔, so, yeahhh... )))
I have rented cars on numerous occasions in Jamaica. The car rental people will try make money out of you every time so make sure the pre-rental is thoroughly done. Check bumpers, tires and the chassi of the car. No shortcuts!
That's why I suggest renting cars from professional car rental companies, I've linked a few in the description. However, in any case - it's always a good idea to take a VIDEO of the car with your phone - just walk around it and film everything. It's always a good idea to have this footage saved for your own reference.
@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE - I consider both Avis and Hertz at Norman Manley International Airport well established businesses. Recording a video during the pre-rental inspection and not drive off the the lot before any potential issues are presented to the rental form is very important.
ahaha, that's another lovely "shortcut" google maps recommended me on one of those days...! 😅😅😅 I find it easier to drive to Black River first via B8+A2 roads, and then go up to Ginger Hill :)
Oh yea now I know where I know her from. I stayed at her airbnb once. It was quite nice especially that little hammock by the coast. I could chill there right now! Bkess up Irena.
LOL on the Wiper vs Signal Indicator "mixup". I always rent a car when I go back home to Jamaica, and every single time (on multiple occasions), I mixup the two...
Thanks for the video. We will be in Jamaica next month and driving from Montego bay to nigril first timer here,I'm a bit nervous with the GPS ,I don't won't to end up in Cuba lol. And I will check out the rental company you put up in you link wish me luck

Please cover hiring a personal driver, or tour guide
yes, will do, of course! Will be part of the "getting around" series :)
I know a great driver. Who is very knowledgeable and professional. He operates out of Kingston.
This was very informative. I drive whenever I visit Jamaica. It really isn't as bad as people think. I do agree that if you are not accustomed to narrow roads it may be intimidating, but doable. The good thing is, there's always the option of public transportation or private driver.
Thank you for sharing! Yes, if people are not comfortable driving around the island - should hire private drivers indeed!
Thank you Irena for another informative and upbeat video. I believe you were born to vlog, i alsl believe you would make a remarkable teacher. G9d bless. Walk good.

First I want to say Love your Channel it's refreshing to see a positive look on Jamaica🇯🇲 Have you ever thought of working for the Taurus board🤔
😅 Driving on the left side is not the real issue" and it's not as easy as you make it sound🤨
For a lot of people from foreign countries that are used to Bright lights and big cities may not find this so easy!
🤔, so, yeahhh... )))
Thanks for saying small roads. You need to see copper turn. Do you know mount Rosser. And flat bridge,
Good video as always. I would recommend you use WAZE in Jamaica since it is updated by locals.
Oh, wow! Thanks for the tip! I know nothing about Waze! Will certainly give it a try! Thank you so so much!🙏❤️❤️❤️
The best map also own by Google, but make sure your phone is charging while using it. It uses a lot of power
@@uhuru27 Thank you!
I moved right now in Jamaica and your videos are a blessing.
love, love, love your videos
Thank you so much for sharing, much appreciated and of course you are fantastic.
Thank you kindly! Glad you liked the video! 😊
Thank you so much. Very good information
Thanks you for sharing. You have given me some encouragement and boost my confidence to drive in Jamaica.
Sounds good, drive safe! 🤗❤️

You haven't seen anything yet. You should try the road from montego bay to Ginger Hill St Elizabeth
ahaha, that's another lovely "shortcut" google maps recommended me on one of those days...! 😅😅😅 I find it easier to drive to Black River first via B8+A2 roads, and then go up to Ginger Hill :)
Moya Clarke Ginger Hill born and raise. Hope they fixed those sink holes.
