- Is there anything left to say about Marvel's Spider-Man 2 content from the PlayStation Showcase and Summer Game Fest that hasn't already been said? Maybe! Judge for yourself...if you're not totally burnt out on speculative videos like this already. But this one comes from Chris Baker, a guy who worked at Marvel Games for seven years -- so hopefully that offers just a little something more for you. Hopefully.
Here's how ChatGPT describes this video, if you're still reading this:
Get ready for an in-depth analysis and unique perspective on Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in this engaging video. Chris Baker, a former Marvel Games employee and current game writer, breaks down the trailer and shares his thoughts on various aspects of the game. From admiring Kraven's impressive design and discussing the significance of his accessories to speculating on the potential connections between characters, Baker dives deep into the details.
Baker explores Kraven's backstory and the possible references to his time in the Savage Land, as well as the presence of his underlings and their importance to the gameplay. He also delves into the mysterious tablet that maps out Spider-Man's adversaries and suggests that while most characters may appear, only a few will have significant roles in the narrative. He further theorizes about the origins of the tablet and its connection to Norman Osborn's advanced tech.
Additionally, Baker analyzes the black suit's design, highlighting its in-universe logic and differences from the comic version. He discusses the suit's aggressive nature and the possible significance of the arrow shape on Spider-Man's hand. With each prediction and observation, Baker offers his unique insights and theories, keeping viewers engaged and excited for the upcoming game.
Join Chris Baker on Superhero.VG for a deep dive into the mysteries and details of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

you were right about silk!!
I don't even remember that! What did I say? 😀
I am super excited for Spider-Man 2 especially with Kraven the hunter and venom appearance in this game is going to be really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion.
I don’t think you’re alone there!
@@cbake76 indeed 😎
Itbwas fun in spidy 3 so should be good here too

I like this breakdown, and references. Given how much passion and creativity Insomniac & Marvel Games delivers, this is on another level compared to the past.
I honestly wish that the past games could get a second life in a collection of it were possible.
With what the current series is capable of, it feels as if there are no limits 🕷️🕸️
Thanks, Robert! There's a lot of corporate politics in play with re-releasing the past Spidey games -- ESPECIALLY if the Activision/Microsoft deal ever gets finalized. Marvel and/or Sony would pretty much have to buy the rights to those games from Activision, or MS would have to work out some deal with Sony regarding re-releases. And really, re-releases just don't sell well enough for that to be a solid business option, unfortunately.
The Kraven Henchmen in shattered dimensions give me Daken minus the claws vibes.
Web of shadows (still the best combat in a Spiderman game that fluid web strike) and shattered dimensions are seriously great Spiderman games.
Great to have you back breaking these down.
I was really hoping they'd add the Baxter building in this one.
I'll take Silk over Spider-Gwen
Thanks for staying with me! You never know -- the Baxter Building could be under construction or could just be very discreet.
@@cbake76 I really hope it's discrete unless it in the other boroughs
I mean Dr. Richards and the gang could be in 4 Yancy street in Brooklyn
7:54 That kick flurry feels like a reference to Web of Shadows on Nintendo DS, and since it was a pause combo in that game, I really hope that could mean they added pause combos for this sequel as well. Would definitely up the variety.
And I'd much prefer that over this simply being like... a contextual wall finisher or something like that
Loved the DS Web of Shadows! I think it's very possible that's just a coincidence, but you never know.
It's from the wrists, unfortunately. I slowed down the gameplay on the day it came out to get a closer look, and the box art confirmed it. Since it *is* an old build, it's possible that they'd change it by launch, but I doubt it.
Also, I like how you caught that Eddie Brock thing. Some of the things Brian said after the preorders went live suggest they have something up their sleeve with Venom. That, and the emphasis he put on "it" when he said "it is not Eddie Brock "
Fantastic video Chris, thanks for making it. I totally agree with you that Kraven having henchmen is a bit uncharacteristic, even though he also had them in Shattered Dimemsions. And like you said, I guess it would be difficult to really do it without henchmen for a game.
Thanks for the support, as always!
Norman is the venom.
Just look closely what is the file for the symbiote on the same page with Martin li incident in the last mj character switch
And when Norman puts his hand on the glass in the first game. It seems if the symbiote wants to band with Norman.
Because on Harry. It's not moving at all. Harry is just too frail and weak to be a proper host. The file for symbiote is GR- 35 if i haven't told you
Actually the last major Venom appearance in a console game was in midnight suns which is highly underrated
True! I was thinking in more of an action-game context, but you're right.
I think it's the same swing animations as usual, since he seamlessly grabs hold of it, as if it came from the wrist.
You could be right.
The boat tour guide definitely isn’t Flash. In the first game, on I believe the bulletin board near May’s office, you can interact with it and Peter notes that Flash joined the military and is overseas.
Thanks man! Just like good old times
Thanks for staying with me! 😀
Spideys thought bubbles in the thumbnail mirror my thoughts lol. Also initialy I thought the green lighting on norman was clever hinting for the green goblin, but now im thinking that showing Harry with the suit is a red herring for them to give it to Norman for him to be venom instead. I found it interesting when Brian said he knows what fans like about the venom character and it got me wondering was specifically about venom other than Eddie Brock makes him "Venom" i think whats cool about venom is that both the symbiote and the host have equal reasons to hate peter parker AND spider-man, their shared hatred is what bonds them and makes them a tough opponent. I think Norman could easily fit this bill. It would definitely be a unique insomniac twist.
LOL... Yeah, I assumed I was dead, too. 😀 That's some really good Venom rationalization there, as well.
I think the references to OA could be something like “Oscorp Aircraft” which full transparency I only thought of because you mentioned that Oscorp might be the developer behind kravens tech
Oooh, I like that!
@@cbake76 if it turns out to be true you clocked it first for sure haha!
It would make sense for Peter to be venom because at the end of the original Spider-Man we saw harry with the symbiote, but it clearly did not fully bond with him, so it would make sense.
The video I've been waiting for!
You’re too kind, Jay!
This game jus makes me even more excited for Marvels Wolverine ! The combat is going to be so satisfying and I can’t wait to see which locales they give us to explore as Logan. Curious about his traversal mechanics. Also, will he get extra weapons along with his claws ?
Spider Man 2 however, has WAY more in-depth combat then the first 2 games and I’m so ready for it. I really believe that’s what was missing. It was good but not great. But along with the parry system and now a ‘runic attack L1’ mechanic , I think it’s gone next level. Can’t wait to see the other moves they have for each character.
14:49 PS. A breakdown of the Wolverine teaser would be great! Looking forward to more content.
I was looking for the same detail you were talking about if he shot webs from the top of his hand or wrist and upon extensively reviewing the footage and setting youtube's playback speed to it's lowest, he's definitely still shooting webs from his wrist as when he's web swinging from the boat you can see his fingers outstretched.
I was leaning that way, but it wasn't definitive enough for me. I don't have a 4K monitor either, so I was missing some detail.
Imagine Eddie becomes Agent Venom and helps the heroes and is told of the effects it had on people and is going through keeping it under wraps because they found a way to lobotomize the symbiote
Maybe eventually? There's a lot of stuff that needs to happen with core Venom before Agent Venom enters the picture. Even in the background of the comics you have stuff like Flash going off to war and losing his legs, months ahead of all that.
I was checking your channel and was wondering when you were going to upload this, love your videos. Keep it up!
Thanks so much! Life is just busier for me these days.
I think Venom is definitely Harry. It doesn't make sense to throw out all that build-up just for the sake of a twist. Venom is at his best when portrayed as a jilted brother figure to Peter and they've already set up Harry & Peter's brotherly relationship. Yuri Lowenthal has also said he did a lot of research into addiction for his portrayal of Peter under the symbiote and Harry's most famous story is about him dealing with addiction.
That's an interesting parallel between Peter's addiction and Harry's addiction story -- hadn't thought of that.
I personally think all that apparent "build-up" is a misdirection by Insomniac. They're known to do this. Everyone thought that Mister Negative was going to be the main villain in the first game but it was actually Doc Ock.
And they thought that the Green Goblin was going to be the leader of the sinister six because of the apparent glider noise and a bright light when they revealed the sinister six but was later revealed that it was Doc Ock from the very beginning.
I'm pretty convinced its a misdirection. And the reason I'm convinced of that is because of obvious it would be.
Not to mention Insomniac already said they're not doing something that has been done before which disqualifies Eddie, Kraven, and yes, even Harry.
But guess, after rewatching the previous post credit scenes from both the first game and Miles Morales is that Norman Osborne is going to be Venom.
We don't see Venom bonding with Harry at all but we do see the symbiote lunge at Norman in the first post-credits scene. And this has never been done before in any type of Spider-Man or marvel media. It would be the first time that Norman bonds with the venom symbiote.
@@brycekennedy5935 Great comment. There are definitely some Norman clues, and he seems to be the “favorite” at the moment. Oh, but you might wanna go back and check out my E3 2017 video for proof that not “everybody” thought Mister Negative was going to be the main villain. 😉
I thought you found the line at 10:00 interesting because Ganke knows that Peter is Spider-Man and not just Miles is Spider-Man
Ha... That too! But Ganke is Miles' trusted "guy in the chair," so it makes sense that secret pops out eventually.
Glad you decided to talk about this game too, great breakdown as always!
Thanks so much!
If we have an out of suit miles fight at school I would love that
my theory for venom is harry dies after the symbiote doesnt bond with him and then it attaches to norman while removing his body from the tank then when hes defeated as venom and loses the symbiote he becomes green goblin
I don't know that I'd count on that happening, but you never know...
At 11:05 you bring up how you can’t tell if the web slinging is the normal thiwp or is just coming straight out of the top of his hands. Now correct me if I’m wrong but in the original game Spider-Man has his whole hand gripped around the web anytime he swings. While in the trailer for the brief moments we see him swinging he does not seem to have to grip his hand around the web anymore
Aww, he brought along a little boy band. What a modest hunter.
LOL. I forgot about that line.
@@cbake76 I figured if anyone would recognise that line, it would be you. As soon as I saw Kraven’s group of hunters, NPH’s Spider-Man echoed in my head.
@F%98%80annel/UColXEGYabPcQ9W2WZRaX7kg I'll admit, it only kind of a rang a bell in my head and I had to look it up to be sure!
@@cbake76 I happened to replay Shattered Dimensions just after viewing Across the Spider-Verse but that Kraven line has been stuck in my head since 2010.
I just pre-order today 😎
9:17 I suppose it is a reference to ultimate spider-man issue 23, where Miles gives up on being Spider-man, according to the cover atleast.
Oh yeah? Did someone say that officially? It's not really an Easter egg unless it actually ties to something thematic, and I don't believe there's been any insinuation that Miles quits. (Maybe it's a hint?)
@@cbake76 well, nobody said it officially but it's what comes up on Google and marches at least something with the game, it's just an hypothesis
@@cbake76 maybe it is in fact a hint
Kraven got that MSI mixed with Brave logo. Also anyone who played the first game knows Harry Osborn is Venom
Heh... I suppose it is a little "MSI." And you don't think that could just be a red herring with Harry? That's why I said it seems too obvious.
@cbake76 I feel like they worked that up so much it be a big let down if it wasn't him.
Oh shit you uploaded
I can joke all I want about it being Web of Shadows 2, but it won't feel like it :c
I miss the web strike
Definitely some similarities...but we're still a long way off from a city of symbiotes covered in Klyntar goo. (Not that that can't happen!)
Hey Chris, you think they will bring back the Chrysler building in this game since they took it out in the Miles game?
That really all depends on if Sony wants to pony up the licensing fees! This is a bigger game than Miles' game was, so the chances are better of that being the case. Still not a sure thing, though.
Wait do we get to keep the symbiote suit after completing the campaign even?
l feel that harry may die then that will trigger osborn to become green goblin
Interesting idea! And certainly possible.
Wait magical tablet could it be that the tablet of order and chaos has updated itself like a jumanji situation
Heh... I suppose iPads are their own sort of tablet of order and chaos, huh?
I have a theory that kraven will become venom similar to spider-man life story.
Not impossible.
i saw that peter with the symbiote shoots webs both ways both from the usual wrist and also the back of the hand but unless they still had to polish this aspect it seems a randomic thing which may also be just related to some swinging animations and not all of the web shooting animations...for the emily-may foundation this could referred to when norman reminded to peter about having plans to start a certain business with harry when he's first introduced in otto's lab
As Ultimate showed us when Peter shot webs from his fingertips, he can really do whatever he wants. So mixing it up actually makes a lot of sense.
YOU WORKED ON MY TOP 3 SPIDER-MAN GAMES
Please what did u do specifically in Webs Of Shadows,Shattered Dimensions and Edge Of Time i really needa kno i love all 3 of those games i need a REMASTER NOWWWW
Three? No. Five. 😀 For all of them, I worked at Marvel and moved things along at a licensing-approval level, sometimes contributing content as well (lines, ideas, solutions on how to make characters use their powers better, etc.).
Maybe they're gonna drop a new trailer on 9/14?
haha nice call
@@wafflybag
Lol, thanks.👍🏾
I wish the gameplay was more like Web of Shadows...
I still believe in that webstike 15 years later
There's still potential that insomniac added deep combo elements that could be inspired by Web of Shadows... we saw how they mastered L1 and R1, and how they'll be used in combet.
So i question what L2 and R2 can do in combat... maybe R2 can be a grab based mechanic that gives us deep combos.
They can bring back that Web-Strike mechanic from web of shadows, and the button could be R2 + Triangle.
Not impossible to not be there.
Have faith.
Web of Shadows is still my favorite combat, but I still like Insomniac's quite a bit.
@Chris Baker - SUPERHEROdotVG What insomniac made was really good... a true inspiration of the arkham series! And man, if they add some elements from web of shadows' combat into their arkham inspired combat system? Deadly combination, if ya' know what i mean.
I can't wait to see more of what they developed for their combat system.
9:23 no further thoughts on the new wingsuits? If I remember correctly Peter could also glide a bit during his helicopter chase in the gameplay. Personally I think it looks a bit silly, I'm sure it will be fun to use as a traversal mechanic but it literally looks like they're flying, and this is a spider-man game not a superman game! I guess the devs were tired of having to explain why you can swing during the bigger set pieces that take place higher up in the sky, now they can just wingsuit everywhere while chasing bad guys.
I wanted to focus more on story and character in this, but yes, the wings will take a little getting used to. I totally get it, though. Arkham City would have been plenty fun if Batman could only grapple -- but adding the glide with his cape (which is physically impossible, but who cares) made for some very fun traversal. And we've seen Spidey glide in the MCU, so some players might actually wonder why he's NOT gliding yet.
Spiders can glide
@@nekogamer2508 It's not just the gliding, it's HOW they glide. In this game it looks like the gliding can take you really far horizontally, and it seems like you can dive and then regain altitude quite easily. I'm worried it will be so helpful that web swinging will be made irrelevant.
@@nekogamer2508 True!
How will they tell the death of Gwen Stacy amd captain Stacy in this world since Mary Jane and Peter will be in a full time relationship will Miles be the one who dates Gwen Stacy of the Playstation marvel universe and send miles off the deep end?
This might sound weird I might get hate comments for this but personally I think Kraven is kinda hot 😂😂😂❤
Hey, who am I to judge?
Yeah lol
I’m all for originality and unique adaptations…BUT…
The Black Suit arc is SO iconic…and I’m honestly scared BASED ON WHAT WE’VE SEEN…That insomniac is being a little TOO “original”
I can’t say for sure because we simply haven’t seen enough… I’m going off of just what we’ve seen.
I think it’s cool that they’re implementing new elements and different perspectives.
But I REALLY hope the POINT of the arc isn’t lost in all this “originality”
They said that they did a lot of research on addiction which makes me feel a little better…but I’m still concerned…
Don’t get me wrong. My concerns are in NO WAY hate towards insomniac. It’s simply based in my deep love of Peter Parker and one of his biggest and most important character developing stories.
Not making Venom Eddie…(so they claim) is already making me cringe…
As the original Venom from 616 literally can’t exist without the shared hate from both Brock and the Alien…
So Venoms entire nature and motive changes just by this one plot devise…
And then there’s Miles…
Hard-core old school Spider-Man fans always shiver when they hear the name Miles Morales.
Not because he’s necessarily a bad character, but because we know typically, if Miles is involved, there is now a ticking time bomb on peters, life, or peters special attributes are about to be reduced and split into two.
In the case of the black suit arc, the big triumph of that story as it has evolved, is that Peter overcomes his selfish tendencies that he put away years ago when he first became Spider-Man.
Peter by nature is a very selfish and arrogant person .
He decided to suppress those feelings when his uncle got killed .
The black suit makes him revisit these feelings, and bring them to the forefront .
And it’s just such a massive accomplishment when Peter recognizes what he must do, and he physically removes the suit himself, symbolizing Peter removing those feelings from his heart .
If they simply make Peter a Bossfight, that’s mind controlled by the Symbiote (that’s not how it works)
Then that huge impactive moment will be so cheapened.
I do, however think it’s cool that we get to see black suit Spider-Man from Miles perspective . Who in this universe is one of Peter’s closest friends.
I feel the most organic way to use Miles in this game as the secondary protagonist , would be to allow him to be one of the key characters in noticing Peter’s personality change, and try to help his friend see how he’s shifting.
And yes, the bio electricity can play a part .
I don’t think miles should save Peter, because like i said, Peter has to remove it himself.
But I think the bio electricity could give Peter the idea to use heat .
I’m excited…I’m just concerned. Lol
I hear you! I definitely have reservations about Venom not being Eddie -- that just seems like a "canon event" to me. But I also know that it's not fair to actually hate it until you see what they're actually doing. When situations arose at Marvel (mainly The Amazing Spider-Man) where a new universe was forming, my philosophy was always "feel free to change things, but don't change things FOR THE SAKE of changing them." In other words, it should always serve the story and/or universe -- never just be changed because you feel like you need something original. I hope that's what Insomniac is doing.
@@cbake76 couldn’t agree more! Thanks for actually reading my comment! I loved the Amazing Spider-Man 2 game btw!
Chris Baker saberthoottiger I’m yellow rangers
Hello. You're developer, right? Tell me, is it OK to work on a game for 5 years and make so few changes? They haven't even changed the web swinging at all! For 5 years! On the next gen! I'm watching on the gap between Batman Arkham City and Batman Arkham Knight / Assassin's creed 2 and Assassin's creed Unity (also different generations and 4-5 years gap) and I can't believe that Insomniac didn't make a big jump.
PS For those idiots who will talk about the non-final Build, there are 4 months left before the release, this is almost the final build.
PPS And for those who will say "this is just a demonstration", take a look at the demonstrations of games that I mentioned above. The huge difference is immediately visible even by demonstration.
Well obviously there's gonna be a huge difference between assassin's Creed 2 and unity of all games because they essentially changed everything by that point with the amount of sequels that had been made and the general formula changing, but then there's Arkham in where the general gameplay loop has remained the same but with subtle upgrades/refinements with each new installment, overall different mandates and goals are made for different dev teams with how many changes are made with sequels down the line because having the game made up from scratch when they literally had a system with the first game and it's spinoff would take even more time
