- In this video, we're taking a look at Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man 2 for the PS5.
After the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2018 and Miles Morales in 2020, Insomniac Games are back with the long-awaited sequel. We take an after the hype deep dive into whether or not the game was a masterpiece or a sequel that bit off a little more than it could chew.

My biggest issue with the story is that it’s just super safe. No moment hits as hard as the ending of the first 2 games.
It's largely a Frankenstein consisting of ideas from shows and games. And some of the stuff was executed worse in some areas.
"You knew?" Is still the hardest line in this universe.
I agree. Insomniac promised a darker game, which okay, some moments were darker but hardly more than the death of May or Otto's meltdowns. Or even Miles telling Peter how dispensable the lives of Harlem were to Roxxon. It was dark but eh sort of not really.

I agree with you so much that Harry’s death would make Norman’s transformation more sensible. It honestly seemed too extreme a reaction given his prior history with Peter/Spiderman.
Harry being on a vegetative state by the end of the game which is even worse. its like putting someone to death but not really, and norman's response is literally someone a father who risks all of his resources, ruins all their relationships to save his son would react.

@@FlipperTitanthe combat is quite literally just button mashing now, nothing else. before switching through gadgets was fun, with the wheel and all, now you just mash two buttons and it happens. things like that, make it a little more monotonous
My only issue is how rushed the ending felt, i think the beginning all the way to kravens death were perfect, but then everything just happened too damn fast, it was literally symbiotes run around, they make the blasts, find miles mom, peter fights mj, get anti venom, city falls apart, then final fight, it just happened too fast
Spiderman 3 all over again. Venom shouldn't have been in this game. For the ending, Peter should have gotten rid of the symbiote as it takes over EDDIE BROCK!!!

the secret ending plays and shows the small remaining of the symbiote in the Life Foundation facility. Eddie Brock inspects the symbiote out of curiosity, but accidentally bonds with the symbiote, making him the next Venom.
Wasn’t the first one like that too? There’s the prison break, Sinister Six forms, Peter fights two 2-on-1’s, then Mr Negative, Doc Ock, and game’s done.

@macaronipotato don't really like this take, eddie and venom (not including movie) always had this sort of destiny/religous spin to them with them both wanting/feeling the same thing, they should've introduced eddie in this game also (like miles) and then you could have had spiderman 3 eventually set up eddie as anti venom.
I just wish the story was longer, where we got more time with Peter with the black suit and see him grow more attached to it and have more time with venom because I felt like he and kraven didn't have enough screen time. Like we could have seen kraven hunt all the dead super villains or we could've see Spiderman with the black suit confront all the dead super villains but this would be before kraven killed them, like what if we see Peter with the black suit almost beat (ex. Scorpion to death due to the black suit influencing him, Peter chasing shocker down and he says that line he said in the animated series) moments like this would really show just how different Peter is with the black suit. Also I also expected black suit Peter to have more feats to show what his strength is like with the black suit, plus I would have loved to see Peter flex his muscles with the anti venom suit because it's stated that he has the power of the symbiote without the draw backs(the voices, and normal symbiote weaknesses) but Im confident that Pete will have more feats in his base and his anti venom symbiote

@@baxterstockman2191not even just filer missions. The game just wasn’t paced well enough. The filler missions are fine cause those are to let the story breathe like in the first couple games. But in this one, they just went so fast every single mission
LONGER?! The game was long! This is standard action-adventure game length. It's not Final Fantasy, lol. If you binge played this game then the problem is YOU, not the game. It took me a month to complete and get the platinum because I have a life, lol. I played a little everyday or every other day.

I think one of my biggest issues with the game was the build-up for Peter turning evil from the black suit. He didn’t have a lot of conflicts with his loved ones before the suit (at least not very prominent ones) and didn't have the relationship problems he should have had. He kind of just turned evil, and everyone caught on instantly. It was pretty cool how they portrayed him close to the end of him with the symbiote, but it felt like he only turned because of the suit and less so from issues he already had that the suit would have amplified. In hindsight, it wasn't bad, but that part of the story was just so good in other iterations of this arc that it stands out and makes it feel like something was missing.
agreed the symbiote kinda lessened the actions of peter and harry to the point that they are excused since the symbiote did it or heavily influenced them, Venom in my eyes has always been like a substance that even if taken doesn't excuse the characters actions since they are in control.
Also Venom didnt really feel much like a character and taking over the world kinda lowers the stakes since you obviously know it wont happen mainly cuz we know theres going to be another game
I think it would have been better if Miles got the symbiote since he was already having that conflict with Martin Li being freed and also having the choice to save him earlier, it would have been so much more compelling with Miles’ story
@Chackz0 That would be interesting. They could have also had him get a symbiote at the same time. They had the bones to do it right with Peter, though. He had some reasons to have issues with his friends, but they didn't show it in the story and didn't delve into it from the beginning.
In fairness, an overarching theme of the game is the burden of Spiderman finally getting the better of Peter so I do think the symbiote compliments that well.
@@Chackz0Miles can’t get the symbiote since he, unlike Peter, has bio-electric powers. Electricity has heat, which is one of the greatest weaknesses of a Klyntar. Plus, it would sound ridiculously comic-inaccurate if Venom interacted with Miles, as the latter never had any symbiote in the comics (except for Carnage). Venom’s usually affiliated with Peter in most medias, so it was already a better plan to keep the alien in Peter, to also kinda make him OP after the nerfing he got.
My biggest issue was Kraven and the Symbiote felt like two different plot lines that weren’t weaved together. Would’ve been better for miles to keep hunting the hunter while Peter got more addicted to venom. Add more strain to Him and Harry’s connection. Cause waiting for the venom plot had miles fucking around until the amazing Li arc.

Kraven and the symbiote plot lines were weaved together as best as they could be. It was great actually. Venom wouldn’t have existed without Kraven
The Li arc whilst good, made no sense. His stand alone game suggested that he had to overcome the grief of losing his father to Martin Li and his goons judging from how incessant he was on stopping phin. Making him obsess over revenge makes him not learn the lessons he learnt in the other game which was to just let go and embrace the future and the fact that some people may change and some may not, its just his sense of responsibility to stop evil and violence that matters above all else.
Minor spoiler: the worst thing Peter did with the Black Suit was “not answering phone calls”😂
Overall the Symbiote storyline was not well paced nor structured. Certain character dynamics are either undercooked or nonexistent. Which is a shame given the final boss’ commentary.
Peter was going to kill mj and kraven, if you lose the chase then you see an animation of peter basically consuming here like in ultimate spiderman
I wish they had taken inspiration from Arkham knight with how each villain would get their own dedicated side missions that would end with a consequence that would impact that main story. Imagine getting to team up with a member of Spider-Man’s rouges gallery and survive whatever traps Kraven set for them like the black cat mission but for everyone. They could’ve even added choices that resulted in certain characters living or dying instead of killing them off screen.
I agree but one flaw about Arkham Knight that they had was they made use the Batman Batmobile too much like 60% of the game you had to use the Batmobile
@@alexistecca408 I didn't have an issue with the Batmobile in that game. It was perfectly balanced between vehicle combat and racing missions and puzzles.
Not only that but I wish they took inspiration from Arkham Knight’s dual combat, where you can switch between characters on the fly. Sure you get a couple team takedown animations between Peter and Miles but that’s it, it’s been done better and they could have done more. The whole two Spider-men thing was a missed opportunity in my opinion, you can’t see either Spider-Man randomly swinging in the open world, you can’t see Peter during combat encounters as Miles, and they only have two post combat animations where they either do an awkward handshake or the Spider-Man pointing meme which is old atp

The first game also came out before there was a standard precedent. If the games were released in the reverse order I can guarantee that there would be less people complaining about certain elements of SM2
@@GameOverloadMOI agree, i dont know if it was just me, but i judged the first game way less harshly, i was glad about stuff like the suits being free, but when it comes to the second, i kinda ignore a-lot of what made me happy in the first game that transferred over to the second game.

I personally believe this game is amazing. I only obtained a PS5 recently as an early Christmas gift and it was the spider man 2 package, so I started playing right away, and it was super fun. The swinging mechanics are much better than the first game, and the combat/skills are SO MUCH EASIER TO ACCESS AND USE. Also, the sound of Peter or Miles breaking open Flint Marko’s memories is the loudest sound in the entire fucking world

But the skills suck compared to the first game…. You can’t even use webs in combat as much as in the last installment
I also agree with the amount of time allotted for the story. I rushed through the game at launch because of school but I feel like the first game had a lot of slower build up or everything had the time it deserved. Though I feel it must be said that the first game had the benefit of novelty and it didn't have the pressure of improving upon a previously established game. Also with the potential for DLC being really high I expect there to be some story elements to address loose threads or set up thing for the third game which makes it hard to judge the game as it is.
The story is amazing though
@@Shahriyararin63 it is amazing I have to many problems with insomniacs story choices I just wished that they had more time to build up to the high/low points. Like peter struggling to get a job and the strain it has on him to keep mays house. In the previous game we had to find peter stuff that was thrown away after he got evicted it might not move the plot but little things like that matter to build tension.

The first game had a slower story mainly because of Miles and MJ missions having more quantity in the first game as well as the game using the web swinging since the wen swinging didn't send you flying like Spider-Man 2 does.
Excellent review. My biggest gripes was the story wasn’t long enough and felt rushed at times. Especially act 2 & 3 but the game play was phenomenal. The story was overall solid and a lack in new game plus at the onset was unacceptable

@@Gigachadbateman104personally I think pacing was one of the biggest flaws of the first game, even though it wasn't that big of an issue. They handled it a bit better in this game, but Miles was their best story and pacing wise not counting first game dlc (second and third part of sm1 dlc is peak)

- the puerto rican Flag debacle getting it wrong AGAIN (they got it wrong in EVERY game so far)

I personally think that Peter taking a "break" is because Miles is going to have his own game again after this one and it's basically just to explain why Peter is not in that game. I think the end credit with Miles shows that this is possible. And then in the fifth and "final chapter" (fifth game) we will have the link up again because Otto and Norman is causing havok and Peter of cause has to be there for that. By then it has been many years and four installments (if my theory is correct) so Insomniac can make the final game with all the knowledge of what worked and what didn't and go out with abseloute BANG. My theory of cause
Nah, there's no second game for Miles. His character was already established between 3 games so it makes no sense why he'd deserve a second standalone. It's full speed ahead for Spider-Man 3 and Miles will definitely take over as the main Spider-Man, with Peter either dying halfway through the game or retiring permanently due to severe wounds inflicted on Peter's personal life by Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus since they will know his identity and target his whole life from the inside out. Either way, Peter is finished, and Miles will be the mentor to Silk.

Things i think were lacking or were done poorly in sm2:
- peters personality changes to fast, even he himself said to harry he changed a lot the last few days. He said all of that happened in a few days. And during the story if you play the missions and consider everycutscene to be day after day peter is with the symbiote like 4 days and it completely changed him.
- Harry had the symbiote for 2 years. Only after 2 years it bonded to him, it didnt go crazy with harry, it went crazy really fast with peter and came back to harry and the crazyness was just increased a lot. They didnt explain how or why any of the things that took place happened like that.
- Making Venom someone close to peter doesnt work. This game just proves that. Venom is not supposed to be a generic villain that wants to take over the world like in this game. Venom is known for his hate of spider-man, Venom even saves people, unless they are related to peter at all, or are evil. So it doesnt make sense to make someone that is so close to peter like harry, hate him a lot like venom does. They tried to do so and very poorly. Harry gets jealous cause his dad said he liked peter and its worried sick about his own son working hours and hours not stopping, harry also gets mad at peter for not wanting him to get a crazy goo on him and somehow they want us to believe thats enough for someone to turn into a villain.
- I mean this kind of lazy writing is exactly what tasm2 and Ultimate spider-man cartoon did with harry. Peter didnt want to do something stupid or was worried about his friend so he does something with no logic or sense and turns into a villain
- Also venom is supposed to call himself that cause he is host+symbiote and their hate for spider-man is what gave them their own name: "Venom", its what they feel. And by the end of the game harry is just crying for peter to get him out of the symbiote
- Peter gets downgraded so miles looks good and i hate it. I mean it would be ok to make miles stand out but make peter look bad even with 8y experience is just lazy. He gets hit by a lightning twice against sandman, he would have been buried against him if it wasnt for miles (and peter already fought sandman a lot of times). Wraith saves peter from being burned alive. Miles saves peter from the hunters. Peter GETS ONE SHOTTED by kraven, i mean wtf. Peter gets knocked out by some random symbiotes and miles and Li need to save him. Even with anti-venom he was still trashed by venom. The cutscenes for the venom fight make peter look overwhelmed and defeated, while miles looks like he has his hands full but is crafty. Miles has to save peter from the symbiote too something peter always was able to do by himself, because thats the essence of his character, his soul cant be corrupted because when he was other people paid for it, his principles are his base.
- Norman also got mad for no reason, he literally asked peter to save his son than he does, he is alive and all but its enough to make him the goblin.
Nitpick: Kraven killed to much villains unecessarily. We already saw how strong he was by going after lizard, killing scorpion and one shotting peter

Peter's personality changed because symbiote found him to be an ideal host and was able to develop a more integrated symbiotic bond with his DNA. This was evident when the symbiote adapted to peters chest insignia. That said, Venom isn't generic. He's come a long way from being goo and hates Spidey for rejecting him as his host. That's not going to stop him from taking over the world, but at the center of the main story, his symbiote is the healing property that both Peter and Harry need to survive. I find all these elements complex and well-layered. Your last points about Peter being weak only show that he's human and still susceptible to living with his share of demons. I think he had a great arc, and it's nice to see him step deeper into companionship while he entrusts the weight of his responsibility on his apprentice, who's ready for the mantle.
Oh, and I don't think Norman will be the goblin. I think he's going to try to save his son and turn him first. Maybe even pass on this voices to him too. He DOES have Venom neutralized inside of him. There's plenty to play with here.
Venom’s story seemed pretty clear to me. Symbiotes naturally want to spread and take over the world they’re on to make the universe their hive mind. Harry was a weak human, so while Venom could keep him alive, he couldn’t really serve Venom’s desires. When Venom met Peter it sensed his strength and wanted to leave Harry for a better host so it could start to spread. Venom tried to consume Peter, but Peter rejected it. When Venom got back to Harry he was an easy host to fully consume and Venom had gained enough strength by feeding off Peter that it could start multiplying, and the people who joined its hive increased Venom’s strength.
Venom is not evil, v enom doesnt want to take over the world, venom wants to protect people, specially from spider-man. Venom doesnt even like symbiote take overs and helps to stop them cause thats not him. If you change too much about a character it just stops being the same character. Like imagine someone giving you a spider-man game but the main spider-man is not peter parker, he doesnt care about others but has basically the same powers. The name is the same but the character is not.@@Gzilla313
The point of kraven killing villains wasn’t to showcase how strong he was , it was to find someone to kill him and be “worthy “ of his death. He was going to die of old age and didn’t want to .

Great video, my biggest issue with the game was that it did too much, I'd love to simply not have lizard in game or the sandman if we had gotten more harry moments so we can care about him, also they could've shown the suffering he had, I felt I didn't care for him in the ending yk, wait, this is your first video? 12:00 Thank you for saying this. It reminds me of the 90s when Peter allowed his clone, Ben Reilly, take over as Spider-Man. Ben became NYC's Spidey while Pete & MJ were going to get to live their domestic lives and start a family. Obviously, that didn't last. Perhaps Insomniac wasn't intentionally taking cues from the Clone Saga, but I saw so many people freaking out about this plot point, when it is so obvious that Peter is not staying out of the fight if Ock breaks out and the Green Goblin joins his rogues (he wouldn't know who the Goblin is yet, but he usually leaves quite a mark on NYC, so that would be enough to make Peter feel that pull of responsibility to take action).
I really do feel like insomniac where taking cues from ben riley for miles, even down to them eventually calling each other brothers.
This, and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (and also Dariusburst in the more obscure side) make me wonder if we're going to see a big trend over the next decade or so in which game companies make sequels that are basically "the previous game with more content and a new story." If they do that, it would be a huge treat for people who are jumping in late with the sequels and missed the originals, as they'll get to experience something absolutely massive. But for those who stuck with the series, they'll be retreading old ground for the most part as well as seeing some new stuff.
That's how I felt with Tears of the Kingdom, even though I put over 200 hours into it and ended up appreciating its denser world and new enemy types, gameplay mechanics, and animal species. I'd still explored most of that world and done most of those things before.
Using tears of the kingdom is legitimately brain dead 💀💀💀. Even game developers were feeling embarrassed by how technically advanced the game was with its gameplay mechanics and there are VARIOUS differences from the previous game including mini games and interactions with the characters and world. Also, I find it pure brain dead to demand a sequel basically just not be a sequel. You could simply, idk, NOT PLAY THE SEQUEL. I don’t get this new philosophy of a sequel not being allowed to be a sequel. By all accounts, most people feel like they cannot go back to BOTW after TOTK due to how much better the game is overall. It’s a vast difference. It’s better for you to say you don’t like Zelda than to make this ridiculous statement basically punishing TOTK. TOTK and Spider-Man 2 are NOT in the same boat. I’ll leave it at this, anything TOTK took away from BOTW (mainly abilities) it replaced it with something miles and years better. Spider-Man 2 however, at times took away various things, and did not replace it with something better if rather replaced it at all. THATS the difference

@@hartfantomyour take is the braindead on here, i love TOTK but you can't argue that even with the expanded mechanics its still a game about exploration and 80% of the game is exploring an almost identical map, the sky islands are sparse and the undergound is nostly empty.
I loved Spider-Man when I first played it in 2018. An incredibly gripping story with unmatched and thrilling gameplay that only Insomniac is able to deliver. Spider-Man: Miles Morales was also a welcome surprise that I finished 100% and the game became my first platinum! I bought Spider-Man 2 for the holidays and finished it in 4 days with my 2nd platinum in the bag. I do think the first game has the best story, since I did find the duality of having two Spider-Men in the same game to be a little bit underdeveloped. Miles's issues and storybeats is second fiddle to Peter and doesn't quite get the appropriate time to satisfyingly develop. As a result most of the events in the story directly connected to Miles doesn't feel especially important to the main event. Cause lets be real. This is still Peter Parker's story. It all leads back to and ends with him.

Definitely a safe sequel! Loved it, had a great time playing it and I hope there's at least 1 or 2 DLC stories they add on in the future.
It's kind of hilarious people thought this deserved GOTY over Baldur's Gate 3 though.

I’m going to be the one to say it: I feel like maybe they shouldn’t have had two Spider-Man in one game. I preferred one it was one because they tried to cram too much in. Abilities wise, story wise, everything wise. It was a great game but I think I really prefer one Spider-Man to focus on. Let’s be honest, Miles didn’t even get much story in this game apart from his grievances with Martin Li. I loved that story and I wanted more of it but it’s all fixed now. I want to focus on one character
They need to add more crime in the open world. Random events were dumbed down for no reason.

6:16 so basically "Zoo York". And, while I do agree that Harry's death would've hit like a triangle+circle finisher, I'm still happy Harry's alive. Another thing I agree with is the ending definitely should've been saved for a "final" final game, especially since Peter's been Spider-Man for about a decade now. But I still like the idea that Miles will take over the mantle for the time being so Peter can get his life together.
When it comes to combat, I really enjoy the addition of the parry mechanic. Parrying on time, specially with the symbiote suit, makes you feel so badass and untouchable!
OK Spider-Man 2 being the very first video on your Video game channel is just perfect. Awesome review. I really think this game should be game of the year. It really captures the same feeling from the Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield movies. Solid 9/10 for me. Also that Howard side quest really made me cry. The music was a nice touch(Plus I only do the quest with Peter). Only 3 games have ever made me cry like that: Mass Effect 3(Anderson‘s death), Red Dead Redemption 2, & Spiderman 2.

@@talas2566 First of all obviously I’ve heard of BG3. Second I think the game is overrated. It’s not a 10/10 and it has it’s own set of issues. I’m pretty sure a LOT of people played the first two acts and didn’t finish it. I’m not saying it’s 100% bad but it’s not that good. Also I’m gonna say it, the turn-base combat is boring. On top of that I don’t like the raunchy humor in BG3.
my only real issue with the story is how shafted Kraven got, which you kinda touched on. the fight with venom was cool but it felt undeserving. Peter and Miles should’ve been there and played a bigger role in it. i also think Kraven should’ve had more screentime in general. he’s definitely strong enough to carry more story weight

Spider man (2018) is a spiritual successor to spider man 2 (2004) but spider man 2 (2023) should have been a spiritual successor to web of shadows in terms of gameplay. But in order for that to work insomniac should've made Peter the main playable character instead of both, do you remember in web of shadows you can switch to your red suit for more agility attacks but if you want more damage you switch to the symbiote because that combat system should have been in Spider man 2 (2023).
In terms of story insomniac should've relegated miles as a side character instead of co-lead because his story beats didn't need to happen in this game but in a miles Morales sequel instead of spider man 2 (2023). But for the story I always consider spider no more as a perfect end to the black suit spider man arc and that insomniac should've killed off Harry at the end thus spider man no more. But venom should've been kraven because not only Peter fail to get the symbiote back for Harry but failed save the sinister 6 because of kraven. And the things they cut because of bad management or strict deadlines really messed up the final product. Just my opinion and what if.
Insomniac/Sony has a good working condition and it's good management. Sony would never rush anything unlike Activision. Insomniac never disappoints. Marvel's Spider Man 2 is better then the first 2 games as it got 91 on Metacritic making it the highest Metacritic score of any Marvel game.
The final product is amazing for Marvel's Spider Man 2. Especially the story. It's amazing that's why it's nominated for best narrative.
I mean I wouldn't mind if Harry got killed of or not but even though he didn't die, it's still emotional. I am guessing Insomniac has future plan with Harry. Definitely can't wait for Green Goblin in the future. So yeah I am glad that Peter is not retiring, he will return for the third game and fight Norman. But I do however agree with he nitpick you point out like switching quickly from the red suit to symbiote suit.

I fast traveled twice in the whole game. I was 100%ing doing the areas like grids, got to Coney Island (last one), completed the last prowler safe house, only to see I had to go over 5,000m to complete it. I fast traveled there and back.
10:40 idk if someone’s already said this, but I feel like resuscitating Harry was not only to show how Miles can do more with his powers, and even more as SM, it also refrains from playing out a similar narrative to the first game, which I think people would have complained about. Peter even says he, “can’t go through this again,” and Miles tells him he won’t have to, kind of gave it away too. It also sets up the Green Goblin, and most likely his revival will probably play a part in stopping GG too.

One of my problems was once again the black suit/Venom was done incorrectly. Peter and Harry ultimately aren’t responsible for their actions but tbh I think the suit works best in the story when the suit just gives the host a small push into their bad thoughts. Peter in this game just goes animalistic and Venom just starts using Harry as a battery halfway through the third act. Venom in my eyes is supposed to be a union of both the symbiote and its host with the common goal of killing Spider-Man. I was fine with the Web of Shadows plot but to have the whole “The Venom host is unwilling and just used as a battery” just isn’t the character and I kinda rolled my eyes at the animal roars from Peter. Would’ve rather had the suits influence be much more subtle and that would make Harry and Peter much more responsible for their actions in it
Something interesting to think about: technically Peter did lose for Spider-Man to win, he DID have to kill Harry at the end of the day, and if it was just him there, that's how it would've stayed, just like in the first and Miles Morales' games with May and Phin. Except this time they were both there, both Peter and Miles, and together they managed to overcome that tragedy that always seems to be guaranteed at the end of their story, which is pretty in line with the game's theme of being greater, together. They don't have to be condemned to the same ending if they're doing it differently.

Fair critiques so far. I do enjoy the insight into your thoughts and analysis. I just disagree that Harry should've died because I think the greater message here is hope against uncertainty. I mean... we already had May sacrifice herself for the good of the city in the last game, so this would honestly just be a repeat of that. Sure, when Spider-Man wins, Peter loses, that has been a thing in his stories and represents the struggle for balance, but must he, Peter, always, ALWAYS lose when Spider-Man triumphs? No. I don't think so, especially with the message that we are stronger together. Ordinarily, Peter, by himself might have seen Harry die, but with Miles there, providing not only perspective, but also abilities and power he never did, well, two negatives make a positive so would not two Spider-Men make a victory for Peter? There's balance there. There's taking a chance and being rewarded for it, even though it might deviate from the traditional canon, and why shouldn't it? That's what I think the Spider-Verse movies are getting at. Yes, there will be pain and hardship and loss throughout life, but that isn't all there is, especially when you let people in. You can turn things around and fight back, make a difference, or let someone else make the difference you need. Sure, loss is powerful and I understand that, especially as a Spider-Fan and a fan of Devilman Crybaby (You want powerful storytelling and tragic loss? Check that out!), but I don't think every story needs to, nor should they be that way even with characters that were created in that vein, hell, Spider-Man redefined that kind of tale, and still I think that it's more appropriate to have Peter win this time. He has friends and allies he's never had before that allow him to take the time to heal himself before he starts again at healing the world. May said when you help someone, you help everyone, so in Peter helping Miles he's not only spread that good will into the city he loves, but it's come back to him, and Harry's life is the reward. By helping someone else, he's helped himself too. I think that's the greater message here, and I prefer it this way as now even Norman might have a way back from being the Green, or perhaps even the Red Goblin. Meanwhile, maybe Otto can serve as the tragic message that some people cannot be saved, but we move onward and forward, excelsior.
That's my take away anyway, but hey, we all have out stories and our own opinions on what makes them great. I won't say you're wrong because you frankly aren't, Harry's death would have been a great tragedy to spur aspects of the narrative for the sequel in its own way. I just think that Harry living supports the more positive aspects of Spider-Man in that there is hope for a better tomorrow, and you don't have to always struggle through a loss. Sometimes you do get lucky and hit that jackpot. It may not be perfect in this scenario, but it is balanced I feel, and I like that a lot more. If anything... I think the mid section could've been more fleshed out and Miles new suit needed a better build up and reason for being there, like Peter utterly trashing his current one.
Anyway, all in all, this is a great review so far, so I'm going to keep watching, only at 11 mins so far.

Okay, also I feel the ending is great. I don't think it contradicts itself. It's about balance. Peter is going to learn how to balance his personal and Spider-Man life. I mean, he is never going to stop being a hero so long as he can still rise up. And I think they're painting the narrative that there can be more than one Spider-Man, perhaps a Spider-Fam, like what Batman tries to do, only maybe we'll have writers that actually let Pete grow and overcome his issues while learning to rely on others for help. He doesn't have to permanently give up the mantle, and he doesn't have to die or lose. Where there's a will there's a way. Stories don't have to leave you with a closed ending, life doesn't do that, but leaving things open ended may just be what leads us, the audience to a brighter future. Yes, Peter will come back, he's not going to leave. Ya know... what's the point of having a cake if not to eat it too? Forget limitations and let's be open to new possibilities! That's what I'm seeing anyway. Break the canon! Let's go!!!
Yeah, I very much agree with the sum up of the story too. It may be flawed, but I love that they pushed themselves as hard as they could, even if that led to some imperfections, I'm much happier that they took the risk! I love the 2018 Spider-Man game, but 2 just did so much more, and I honestly have to praise it for all that, even the fumbles. Honestly, as much as I love the 1st iteration in this series, I have to say that 2 here is my preferred. I've even gone back to play that first entry and boy... oh boy... this sequel blows it completely out of the water. I do agree that 2018 had a more perfect story, but I much prefer 2's as well as the evolution of the gameplay.

Okay finished the video and yeah, I agree. It may not be perfect, but even it's flaws can be appreciated, if not forgiven, and I would rather have a rough masterpiece than to never experience this at all. And hey, isn't that just perfect to Peter Parker? A flawed but beautiful mess.
Also, on a more personal note: I don't know if it will heal the world, but it did help me heal in my own personal battles.
I guess the question there is, should you sacrifice a life and commin sense for a better story? Cuz we all know Mikes has bioelectricity, he'd have to try resuscitation anyways, if he's Spider-Man, so just letting Harry die would've made no sense tbh, even if it might fit the themes better.

I enjoyed Spider-Man 2, but honestly I liked Spider-Man 1 much more. At the first game the story was much more focused because there's only Peter as the main character. Then we had another game that focused on Miles. At Spider-Man 2 going back and forth between two heroes shifts games story several times and because of that story loses focus and dramatic effects aren't as strong as the first game. I know that many people enjoyed to change between Peter and Miles while playing. But I still prefer Spider-Man 1's approach, a story solely focused on Peter and later another story solely focused on Miles.
I mean to be fair, Spider Man 2 may have been better game the first 2 but the story for 2018 is better by a little bit so I agree.

Since the sinister 6 died Peter didn’t really fight anyone or spend much time w/ the suit. They coulda made the flame missions licked behind the main story, so when Peter gets the black suit, another flame missions is unlocked and Yuri does a mission w/ black suit Peter. Miles had the better story by far and anti venom is cool, but I’d rather have good narrative, writing, and themes than cool moments.

A truly excellent game with lots of big improvements but it feels like it could've used a little more content to keep it going because after beating the story and side content I'm left with wondering why I ran out of things to do so quickly.

I definitely agree with the ending being a bit messy, and I also wish it was longer. Especially with Miles, it feels like his point to Peter of "you're not around any more" would have hit harder if we had another side question with a supervillain. It wouldn't need to be a super intimidating one, but a villain that Miles hasn't dealt with before but Peter has so Miles is scrambling to figure out how to beat them and Peter just isn't answering would be really fun to me, IDK. My gun says Shocker or even a character we haven't seen like Big Wheel. Hell, you could have made the Brooklyn music museum guy a supervillain instead of just a guy and it would have worked more for me. And yeah, considering how easily people come back from the dead fully in comics, it would have been much more interesting if Harry had died because even if they NEED him in a later story beat they could do a Jackle Clone Wars thing. Hell, in the ultimate comics the clone saga is done by Otto, not Jackel, so why not?
This video was phenomenal. You captured my feelings towards this game in full and we have much in common with how we view this. It is unimaginable in my mind that GTA 6 will be able to top this in terms of story and character. I can’t see it and if they do manage to pull that off I will be blown away

While this game did feel like more of the same when it comes to the gameplay and the pacing I loved it all the same. I don't even mind the Mary Jane sections especially since I think she was written fine.

I loved everything about the first SM except for the default Spidey suit with that white in it. I wore every suit but that one in particular with the electric shock special power. Stun everybody, bosses, brutes and brawlers alike going in a circle taking down sometimes 10 people at a time.

Solid 8/10 imo, messier story than first but everything else apart from maybe the stealth is way better. A person’s opinion on which is better probably depends on what they value most in a game.
Only 9.5-10/10 scores are accurate. 8/10 is amazing but it's not right for Marvel's Spider Man 2 as the game is better then 8. I agree the story is amazing but it's not really messy. As for the stealth, I will admit it's less focused. To be fair, the stealth doesn't need improvement
@Shahriyararin63 games are subjective so, the story is also a LOT messier compared to the tight & grounded story of the first. btw stealth needs a MASSIVE improvement as it's so brain dead gamplay. npcs are just so dumb😭 and theres barely any interactions in the world. besides those 3 things everything else was a massive upgrade

The game was not overhyped the fans are hyper, overly excited 12 year olds, who latch onto the new thing....because its the new thing. Look at the videos it spawned, and look at the reaction when it didn't win GOTY. It's just another Spider-man game, a the best one we've gotten since the first one, but it's just another Spider-man game.
I’ll say this though. Harry not dying was the right choice cause it helps elevates miles into becoming the only temporary Spider-Man. When Spider-Man wins, Peter Parker looses but miles made sure that Peter Parker was able to win as well. I feel like that scene helped cement peters decision to leave new York to miles for a while cause miles was able to reform his biggest enemy, he proved himself as a worthy hero and hell he saved Harry’s life. That is how I look at this

I see what you're saying about Norman, I also thought it was a little cheap to keep Harry alive but now I'm thinking they kept him alive for him to die of complications or something like that in the next game, which will REALLY be the turning point for Norman's goblin arc

Keeping Harry alive might have something to do with the storyline in the next game before Spiderman 3. Harry could be used as the main story antagonist, and when he actually dies, will setup the motives for Norman in the 3rd final game.
Overall I really enjoyed my time with the game. My only problem with it was Harry not dying at the end.
It's easily the most boring and sanitized take on the Venom Symbiote story I've ever seen.

- every part is horrid
- story is a mess of going nowhere with terrible pacing (spider-man 3 game has better pacing than this)
- weakest symbiote storyline TO DATE
social politics
- game worked on by ESG company Sweet Baby Inc
- constant emasculation of Peter from MJ and Miles to devalue him, hence his rogue gallery axed in this game to push him out
- Miles in any way beating symbiote peter is laughable
- MJ tanking a hit from Venom
- scene of grown man being beat on and sniveling to a girl half his size and weight
- mook enemies are inclusive to women fighters too for no reason than to be beat up by peter, how is that not sexist
- Peter over praising Miles for reforming Lee when he did nothing and saying he never could just to over praise him more
- Miles all his side missions to some identity or social cue from gay relationship to deaf girl playable segment
- Black Cat only here to say she's gay and leave
- the puerto rican Flag debacle getting it wrong AGAIN (they got it wrong in EVERY game so far)
- Spanish Language butchered for "inclusive speech"
- Scream Fight is just Peter acting like a b*tch while being chewed out by MJ and losing the fight in the end
- MJ segments laughably over powered to imply she's capable when all it does is highlight how weak Pete and Miles are
the fact there's that many is astonishing
One thing that would have made the ending even more impactful is if Harry would have given Peter the symbiote out of his own will to save his life instead of the symbiote doing it itself. If Harry THEN would have died it would have been such a gut punch. Also the scenes where Harry acusses Peter of him saving his life and Peter was not willing the give back the suit would have had a much stronger effect. Just one little example of things that could have had bigger impact if the story had been "deeper"

i love all three insomniac spiderman games but my personal favorite one is spiderman 2!! it was like a horror/action movie!! 💯🕸️🕸️🕸️ i took my time beating the game soo it became more cinematic when it was the end game time!! the story was very engaging and i loved how they expanded the venom/ kraven storyline
Good points. I agree this game is a good sequel but it seems it didn't know what it wanted to be, so we get a little bits of everything but just not enough. They played it safe.
Definitely met if not exceeded the hype for me and the story was fantastic in my opinion. The game is not complete. Obviously we have to see what happens down the road with DLC releases the DLC releases for the last Spider-Man were all really great so we will see what the future holds?
Nice review, and fresh off of Hogwarts Legacy myself. Also experienced the AC burnout after AC3 and Miles was killed off. This game was redemption, and I also really enjoyed the ending with Harry. I think it was the ending we needed to bridge the gap into the third installment. I see Harry becoming the Green Goblin, and it would be great to see him come out as the big bad after he discovers his father dying, or something. Hell, maybe we'll get to see two goblins in the next game. Either way, Harry has a chip on his shoulder, especially after losing Venom. He also likely has neutralized symbiote DNA that could put an interesting spin on things. Who knows, but I'm satisfied with the introduction of the G-syrum treatment. Lastly, we got a bad taste of the multiverse. It'd be cool to breakthrough into other Marvel installments.
I’m gonna be honest. I was hyped that Venom was the villain in the build up because in my head, it was like the animated series where he would cause trouble in Peter’s life.
But I think it’s just cause I played web of shadows( which was great) or maybe I would have felt the same regardless, but I really felt let down with the whole “alien zombie invasion” aspect of the game they took and not Venom causing trouble on his own cause then I knew that meant even more hours of just mindless punching things.
The game could've easily been 20 hours longer with how much they had going on. But they somehow managed to cut that in half and made it work but arguably some of the sequences could've been more fleshed out.

I agree with every point you made, the only thought I had that you didn't point out is that the inclusion messaging was handled in such a ham handed fashion. I'm all for including these ideas, but write them better!
I literally fell asleep playing the miles storyline and I never fall asleep playing video games . God of war 4-5 had me on the edge of my seat pulling all nighters
