For me it was that AND also Otto's "trapped in this USELESS BODY". Partly why I hate most of the renditions of Spider-Man and why I love this one so much. One of the key aspects to a good Spidey story is the villains have the saddest fates. The beauty of Spider-Man/Peter Parker as a character is when he absolutely cannot find any rationalization for his actions against the "bad" guys, when he knows they have reasons for being that way and what he does doesn't help at all. And to me Otto in this game was the most perfect heartbreaking example of why Spider-Man is such a great story.
Insomniac just really understands the character. My favorite moment is towards the end when Doc-Ock says "We have to do what's best for those beneath us" and Peter just immediately says "No you're wrong". Spider-Man is my favorite hero of all-time because he's a nobody that got power but remained uncorrupted by it. He's not a god like Thor or Super-Man... he's not a billionaire like Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne.... He's a poor kid that lost his parents, lost his uncle, loses friends. Through all that though, he just wants to do what's best for the little guy because now he can. And feels the responsibility. Even though Doc-Ock is right in the sense that Peter and him are more powerful than others, Peter doesn't view it like that - not even for a second. Every person is important in his eyes and throughout the gameplay and story you can tell. Whether Peter's talking a homeless woman into going to get food at the soup kitchen or talking to a garbage man on the phone, he treats them with kindness and respect. I especially liked when Peter told Doc-Ock "You were everything I wanted to be" as he's holding one of his broken tentacles and said "But you just threw it away" as he throws the tentacle down. The strength and power that the tentacles give Doc-Ock didn't make Peter admire him more. Doctor Octavius was Peter's hero because he wanted to help people. In the end, that's all Peter wants to do.
Ottos talk to Peter there always reminds me of uncle Bens “with great power comes great responsibility” and its almost the same sentiment until Otto says “we have to do whats best for those beneath us” which sets Peter off. I like to think it reminded him of Ben because he looked up to both of them but Otto is just too far gone.
This is soo fascinating. There is also an amazing antithesis between Spiderman and Batman. Both have lost loved ones to crime. Both are masked crime fighting vigilantes. And don't get me wrong I love both characters and think they are very well written. And yet I would accept Peter ten times over before I accept Bruce. In fact I'll find myself probably protesting against Batman. Because compared to Peter, Bruce's motives almost seem selfish in that he's trying to extract personal revenge through crime fighting and surveillance. Bruce sees himself as justice with no room for self reflection or empathy to the villains he's fighting. However Peter sees himself as a tool to Justice. With his powers he sees a responsibility to HELP bring justice. He's empathetic to villains. In the insomniac universe many of the villains reform and Peter does find himself even teeming up with them. There was a part in my Spiderman 2 play through where Miles (you can almost use Miles and Peter interchangeably) just after a high octane action sequence with a lot of shit still on the line goes forward and helps a woman find her missing grandpa with demtia. After finding him Miles sits there and waits patiently for the woman to arrive as the grandpa talks about how he met his wife and how it's all starting to fade and that was the only place he could find peace in anymore and Miles just sits there and listens. It brought tears to my eyes. Spiderman at the end of the day chooses to be human. No matter the circumstances. And I think that's one of the things that makes him such a compelling character. Also I'm gonna say this so Sue me in court but Peter/Miles >>>> Bruce/Robin
I love that MJ apologized to Peter just as much as he apologized to her for always trying to save her. She needed to prove to him that she could handle herself, but she realized that she was trying too hard to do so and it wasn’t fair to him, constantly scaring him into thinking that if he didn’t step in to save her, she would die. And then it’s revealed that she only wants to help more to make it up to Peter for all the times her saved her.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. After MJ said, “I may not have Spider-Powers, but I’m not made of glass!”, I got mad and asked, “Well then, bitch, kindly explain why you had to sneak around every conceivable threat in your vicinity”. The way both Peter and MJ realized where they needed to grow was amazing and I forgave her when she came to her realization about her side of the relationship.
Yup Both learned the lesson of "it's okay to ask for help", each in his own way. And while it took me time to get used to Mary Jane getting the Lois Lane treatment..now I'm not really bothered by that.
The best part of his final fight with Octavius is that even after he threatens to reveal his identity and his tried to kill him multiple times, Pete still tells him that "ill get you the best help". That is Spider-Man
Is there any reason to believe that Dock Ock won’t reveal his identity? I don’t think the second game will deal with it but I can see him doing it out of spite.
@@seanlaffey3633He will not, I guess. The neural interface did actually make him crazy and now that he is off them, he will probably get help and probably even help Peter in the next game
After years of growing up sucking at trophy hunting, this and Miles Morales were my first 2 platinum trophies on PlayStation. 2 of my favorite games from the last decade bar none
How can one suck at trophy hunting? You kind of just look at the trophies you need to get, then complete the respective objectives. Some trophies are hard/suck to get, but that's not being bad at it. I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just curious.
Honestly for me insomniac did the second best adaptation for spiderman all time. I still think spectacular spiderman is better but maybe after second game that might change. The thing is, a show/movie/cartoon can explore better side characters than a videogame. It would be very difficult to see characters from peter’s school being well developed on a game, on a cartoon is more simple. For me spectacular spiderman understands what spiderman and all its characters is about and does an excellent job to portrait every character in the show. Insomniac’s spiderman does that well too.. its a hard fight i really want to see the sequel to make the final comparison
@christianhenry4173 personally, I prefer less universe-shattering stakes in my Spider-Man stories. The smaller/more local plots always have more of an impact on me
This game to me is the greatest media adaptation of Spider-Man outside of the comics. They understood exactly how Peter Parker is and how Spider-Man acts. I really do consider this as the next "Arkham" styled games where they do incredible adaptations of the character and just make a great game overall
The “NO YOUR WRONG…YOU WERE EVERYTHING I WANTED TO BE!!” Are my favorite lines not just in this game but in any game. Literally gives me chills every time
Genuinely my favorite Peter Parker story and my second favorite Spider-Man story overall behind ITSV. Basically a perfect licensed game or just action game in general, and this video is making me even more unbelievably hyped for the sequel then I already am, AGGGH. Great job!
For real! I have 300+ hours of gameplay saved on PlayStation from the 2018 PS4 game and most of it was mindlessly swinging through the city and stopping every crime that just randomly appeared whilst ignoring the missions
8:31 Okay, Otto does have a selfish motive, but by helping himself, he's also helping others. I think this is something you may have overlooked, but it adds an extra layer to his character. He's creating these prosthetic limbs because his own are dying on him. But in creating them for his own (one day) benefit, he'll be helping others around him as well. That's why to him, Osborne cutting his funding and interrupting his research, while he still has the ability to do it cuts so deeply to Otto (it's personal on multiple layers. From past history with Norman, as well as the selfish underlying motivation of his research.) that he eventually (with the corruption of his neural transmitter) snaps and goes after Osborne. Peter is left in the dark about this dark truth that Otto's body is giving up on him, so he needs to create new limbs to replace them, and can only see the good natured good that their creation will bring to all. If he had known how close to this project Otto was, he may have see his transformation coming, which is why Peter blames himself for it happening at all. He was so close to Otto, didn't know about his muscular dystrophy, and by the time he figured out about it, he didn't put 2 and 2 together or realize someone so good natured may snap that way.
But discussing that would require adding to this part of the script. Which is meant to only briefly talk about Doc Ock, before moving on. & There's just no time for that... This is only a 35 minute video.
The game kind of debunks that the neural transmitter corrupted him at all. He’s been working on his projects since the mayoral rally attack, where Otto mentioned he was inspired by Li’s actions. That’s also before he makes significant progress with the arms. It’s also why Peter’s revelation after being poisoned by Scorpion is a huge shock. Otto was working on this far longer than expected and hid it under his nose. Peter was too blinded by hero worship to notice.
I really love the white spider-suit. It made me internalize this spider-man as its own thing from the very start. Wouldn't play with any other suit, playing in it "legitimizes" the separate spider-universe for me.
Fun fact, based only on cutscenes, miles and Peter only have 3 suits each. One they had that got damaged from the first boss, one they got from their mentor, and one they made themselves
The Insomniac Spider Suit is actually my favorite. I think it's a really, really good update with more modern design aesthetics, lines, and touches that really updates the old red-and-blues, which to me, look kind of flat in 3D games, they look really striking on the page where the Insomniac suit might look overdesigned, but for a video game the Insomniac suit is chef kiss for me.
I really love May's big quote of the game "when you help someone, you help everyone". It is so absolutely Spider-Man to the core and it's such a great foundation for this iteration of the character
That May scene still makes me cry. The first Spider-Man was so good. It felt like it was two entire games with as much story as they packed in. Can't wait for the sequel.
That end scene with Aunt May is still utterly heart-wrenching even after already having witnessed it first hand on my own playthough. Honestly, if there were an Oscars for gaming (and in this day and age, maybe there should be), I'm sure Yuri Lowenthal would be an absolute shoe-in.
My favorite headcanon is that Otto realized Peter was Spider-Man in the scene where he sees him with the suit but he just plays dumb so he doesn't make Peter worry over it
As someone who has been critical of the direction PlayStation has been taking, Spider-Man isn’t one of them. I just finished this game earlier this year and it’s easily one of the best written Spider-Man stories to come out from the franchise. I am eager to the play the sequel soon.
@@Johnny2Cellos 8:22 Of course, Otto becoming Dr Octopus is pretty predictable. So what they did is make is make Otto is very likable character that you you don't want him to become a villian, and it was done perfectly. Giving us small hope that the Otto we grew to like in this game won't become the monster that he is desinted to be, only to shatter it. That made the last boss fight between Spider-man and Otto not only a deep berayal between the two characters, but also to the player. 25:46 exactly.
Insomniac really understands the characters within the Spider-Man mythos. One of my favorite moments is when Aunt May asks Peter to take his mask off. I lost it at that point, the character of Spider-Man has meant so much to me ever since I was a kid. They really did great with this game, I can not wait for Spider-Man 2.
Got me so immediately hyped for the second one this month I hadn’t preordered it yet but finally did halfway through this video as you reminded me of this masterpiece of a game and how much I love miles morales too
I actually really like the MJ missions. I thought they did a good job at conveying how necessary Spider-Man is for everyone in the city. Going against villains in her unique way to help Pete and protect people, not only gives MJ some badass character moments, but I believe also gives Peter a more personal connection to New York from that "civilian" perspective. Their relationship kind of illustrates how he views what he does and his responsibility to New York. Peter spends so much of the game devoting himself to Spider-Man work that his personal life falls apart, constantly guarding the city. MJ shows that, yes she needs protecting (just like the city) but it is ok to trust that she (and New York) will survive if you're not there to make sure. His vacation with her in Spider-Man: Miles Morales shows that he's learned and is comfortable, not just in his relationship with Mary Jane but now New York as well. He leaves it up to Miles knowing and trusting him that everything will be ok without him around. I find the character relationships in the Marvel's Spider-Man games to be so fun and interesting!
I really enjoy this version of MJ, I actually like the change of pace when you get to play as her. Plus the backstory you get from them really helps. Plus the fact that this is years into his Spider-man career really gave Insomniac the ability to play around a lot with their Spider-man lore
My only gripe with her was her being all like "I may not have super spider powers but I'm not made of glass" and claiming it was similar to Pete taking on Sable's forces.... meanwhile I'm thinking, "yeah, and one of you can move faster than sound, dodge bullets, and throw locomotives around... the other one of you literally gets insta-killed if you so much as get spotted." Like, I enjoy a spunky MJ instead of a screaming damsel but that spin on it made her kinda annoying imo.
@@christopherbucher7017honestly she was kind dumb in that comparison but we have to give her a credit to being brave overall. I think their dynamic works perfectly on the DLCs. Also, having the taser and spider baits were very cool to keep that gameplay fresh
Strangely enough I first heard Yuri Lowenthal in Fire Emblem. He's the english VA for the character's first and more predominant main character Marth. He uses a very similar voice and tone for Marth as he does for Peter, but sells it in a completely different way to entirely reshape the personality conveyed. It really goes to show to vocal talent Yuri has as a voice actor to use such similar voices for wildly different roles and managing to sell them both perfectly.
This is not only one of the best video games I’ve played, it’s one of the best Spidey stories. Otto’s fall is a genuine tragedy. May’s death was a real shock I never saw coming. Having Peter make the choice to let her die for ‘the greater good’ was heartbreaking. It just works so well on so many levels.
Glad to have this back. Got scared for a second. What I said before applies now, this is one of my favorite incarnations and interpretations of Spider-Man.
What I especially like about this game besides Peter's personality given actual respect to his character; is that Miles becomes Spider-Man too. It shows that Peter doesn't have to be dead in order to have Miles Morales with him. The game shows their relationship really well. They're not related, but they are brothers.
Love your spidey videos Johnny. This is probably my favorite version of the character I normally dont comment on videos but trying to help with the algorithm or some shit
From the interviews I've heard and countless stuff I've seen about this game, Insomniac were not reluctant at all. They immediately wanted to do it and bit at the chance. This is without a doubt my favourite Spider Man story, this and Spider Man 2 the movie. The second game in less than 20 days, it's going to be phenomenal.
too bad its ps5 only, heroes like spiderman shouldnt legally be allowed to be an exclusive...not buying ps5 for one game...sorry not sorry their exclusives arent enough to buy the ps5 should be like 50plus exclusives to make it worth it instead you got god of war, spiderman and what else that does near as good which is zero you're other exclusives always flop or get pc releases..so again proof the ps5 shouldnt of been released just like the series x....too early with nothing or not enough nex gen for the leap and purchase, funny how all my homies family friends etc have only upgraded for one or two games that is sad...
Great video. Just replayed both the Remaster and Miles Morales on the PS5, and man are they just some of the most fun I've had in a long time with a game. Definitely one of if not the best interpretation of the character outside of comics, and Spectacular Spider-Man. Can't wait for the sequel in a few weeks.
I genuinely hadn't preordered a game in about 10 years, I have pre-ordered Spider Man 2 because Insomniac are one of the few developers I trust because of how well they did with this game and Spider Man Miles Morales
My third fav moment in the game behind May's death and Ock's defeat is Peter texting MJ while swinging and walking on walls. Such a perfect texting moment while moving around trying to think. Relatability went through the roof.
Gosh... I just can't get used to the new face... I went through such an emotional rollercoaster... it was truly a special moment in video game history for me... and now the Peter I felt with is gone, suddenly looks younger than Miles and somehow... just doesn't make me connect with him.
I'm personally of the belief that Otto knew full well what he saw when he discovers Peter's secret. But seeing on Peter's face how worried it makes him he downplays the situation for Peter's sake. Playing it off as just Spider-Man's tech guy and not the man himself.
I love the spider-man games so much. SOOOO MUCH. I got the original game’s platinum trophy in about 27 hours total, and I got the miles morales platinum in about 18 hours total. Miles morales had a lot of grindy combat trophies and 2 play throughs, but these games are still both perfect from the story to the collectibles to the platinum itself.
I think one thing that gave Marvel the confidence to hand it over to Insomniac to do their own thing with is the success of the Batman Arkham games. Those showed that developers don't need to be slaves tied to a story, they're allowed to use the whole of the mythos to create a unique interpretation of well-known elements into something unique but still well within the spirt of that character and property. Because Insomniac's Spider-Man feels like that. It knows the mythos, knows the parts, but is using them to tell its own story.
I’m so happy you made a video discussing one of my favorite video games and Spider-things ever- such an amazing video. Perfectly sums up what I adore about this game
31:43 I forgot what a gigachad Norman was in this game 😂 bro is being dangled off the edge of a skyscraper and instead of groveling for his life he STILL decides to dogwalk the nerd threatening him 🗿
It’s almost scary how many points we agreed on being so strong. The way this “already-experienced” Peter was established along with the world around him, the characters, the controversial “cinematic” gameplay pieces feeling and looking awesome, and the arcs these characters goes through. I was floored when you talked about how the root of this conflict is Norman. It’s obvious in retrospect, but it’s something I’ve never heard anybody talk about. Something original I CAN share is how Peter “Lets go” of Otto. When you were talking about that heart-shattering ending, I randomly started thinking about Ra’s al Ghul’s death in Batman Begins. That Batman literally said: “I’m not gonna kill you, but I don’t have to save you.” This Peter practically said: “I’m not gonna kill you, and you are beyond saving.” One left their former mentor to die in a fiery blaze, and the other knew his mentor was already gone, but left him in a safe place for the authorities to collect him. The pure savagery in Yuri’s voice is something we would hear frequently in Spider-Man 2, but the fact that Peter was that mad without the symbiote’s influence is staggering proof of his heart. Even when pushed to the edge, this Peter will not kill.
One of the things that will always stick with me is the way they executed boss fights with the villains. Fighting them one-on-one, learning their patterns, and how to beat them to later fight them with another villain later in a 2v1. Needing to navigate both villains in each fight really took me into the Spidey headspace and created an excitement for the game I'll never forget...!
Your analyze is great dude, awesome video you’ve got yourself one subscriber. I’ve recently finished that game for the 4th time to keep warm to spider2 and I was just thinking how great of a storyline and character development that game has, now i’m replaying miles morales for the first time (i’ve only played on launch) and they just keep the high bar on that one. I’m very hyped for the sequel because symbiote arc for peter is my favorite arc for him, its a shame the game will be as long as the first one because with insomniac great storytelling i wish we had a game twice as big in story
I've played this game hundreds of times. I have hundreds and hundreds of hours in this game and own it on ps4 and my pc and have beaten it multiple times on both and the story still makes me emotional. Such an amazing game. Insomniac really hit the ball out of the park with this game. I've not been this excited playing a Spidey game since Spider-Man 2
Am I the only one who believes that Dr. Octavius was evil the whole time? He planned the prison break for months not days. And he did the whole "you're spider-man's costume designer" to basically not make Peter think a lot, he knew that Peter was Spider-man from that moment.
I’m currently playing through this and Miles Morales with my girlfriend and she’s loving it! I also played my first play-through with the Scarlet Spider costume, would love if someone could step up and write a good version of the clone saga in any media lol.
I hate how much I adore this game because I can't even play the sequel since I don't have a PS5. Still, though, this is at least in my top 3 video games of all time. Love running through it all every couple of months.
The only few things that could've made this game even MORE perfect: more swing tricks: there are very few for pete kept the old face for Peter: the remastered pete looks TOO young for a "spidey" EIGHT years into his work changed MJ to Gwen: MJs the basic "strong independent woman" and gets mad at Peter for no reason ALOT in the game And have an even MORE DIFFICULT, difficulty: since it ends at ultimate- but you can unlock an ability where you one shot enemies but can be one shot as well. they should've made an "Equal" difficulty where your dodging and combat is pushed to the limit, but you can 1 shot everything- even bosses. AS proven many times- spidey holds back, and even when he DOESN'T his punches "by my best estimate, was over twelve hundred foot-pounds" - Doc Ock
Ngl.. not sure how I felt about the advanced suit when the trailer first dropped... it has now become my favourite Spidey suit after the superior Spiderman and black suit
I just played through this and Miles to get ready for when i get 2. When the first game came out it was my goty easily and i still feel the same way about it now. Its just an extremely fun game that ill never get tired of.
One of my favorite lines of that emotional incredibly well written ending scene with otto is when peter replies to otto "You do what you think is right doc, even if it hurts like hell" as he walks away. you can tell peter is not talking to Otto but himself. Telling himself to do the right thing even if hurts him, showing us how truly painful this moment is for him, to let his mentor be turned into justice, to let Otto be thrown into a prison cell. And while that is the right thing it hurts peter is hell. this is again shown when peter sacrifices his own aunt. Who at this point is the only mentor left for him. The only person he looks up to after what happened with Otto and Martin Li. The one who, in his own words, sacrificed so much for him for all these years and asked for nothing in return. And peter has the chance to save her. But he does the right thing even when it hurts him. Even when he loses his loved ones he can't just let everyone in new York die. Even though half of the people he is saving will continue hating him. Jameson will still keep calling him a menace. A lot of citizens will see him like so. Most policemen will still continue shooting him down. He has no obligation to sacrifice his aunt for these people. But he knows its the right thing. and this part of the ending is what really showed me how great and well made Insomniac's Spider-Man is. He embodies the quote with great power comes great responsibility, while Otto uses it as an excuse, to the point that when he tells peter that, uses the moto as an excuse, dismisses everyone as people "beneath him" and says he does this as his duty. Peter immediately screams "YOURE WRONG". this is why insomniac peter is my favorite of all time. and this is why I did not like Spider-Man 2 as much as the first game. They didn't show this side of peter or Spider-Man. The best way i can explain it is. Spider-Man 1 is like playing as peter parker. Spider-Man 2 is like playing as Spider-Man. the story telling of peter fades away in the second game. Its just action and magic and superpowers and aliens all the time. you never slow down and see how hard peter's life is like the first game. In my opinion the first game could not be more perfect and its Peter Parker remains my favorite
If Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse didn't exist, this would still be ny favorite piece of Spider-Man media. 100% the best portrayal of Peter of all time. Yuri absolutely killed it and the writing team knocked it out of the park. The feel of being Spider-Man was not something i could put into words before this game, but the freedom and joy of web swinging and the simultaneous constant bombardment of things that need to be fixed does it so well. Amazing video for a spectacular game.
omg listening to the movie/game scores while reading the comics is awesome and i'm totally stealing that! great video as always, i love you're analysis every time!
32:08-there's a video where they play “You say run” and “jet set run” over this final battle and it is as close to perfect as possible. Fitting considering how Deku was inspired by Spider-Man.
I’m commenting on this reupload to help the algorithm. The Insomniac Universe is S tier Spider-Man only SLIGHTLY outclassed by the Spider-Verse movies. The first game is the most perfect Peter Parker story I’ve ever seen and Yuri Lowenthal is my favorite actor to ever play him and Spider-Man. I’m so excited to see his take on Symbiote Spider-Man. The new game is coming in a little over two weeks and I’m so excited.
These games are masterpieces at multiple levels, storytelling, pacing, controls, physics, environment…sure there are tons of marvel-like shortcuts and everything is simple and easy, but that’s well worth the enjoyment we get from playing. I’m not usually up for those compromises but I had so much fun with these games, I have no choice but to admit I’m sold !
@@s.p.d.magentaranger1822 Delectable Yuri Lore, he’s voiced my favorites since I was a kid. Ben and Sauske to name a couple, so I’m super happy he’s thriving! He soooo deserves it
The first time I played this game, I already KNEW all the twists, and even with that, I was STILL crazy invested in the story and characters…it GENUINELY felt like I was playing through a comic/movie
I'm not that big on the comics so I don't know about other Miles iterations but I really like how they implemented him here and his relationship with Peter. When Mile's dad die Peter helps him move on but after all the aftermath of the game's ending when Miles shows Pete that he's got spidey powers Peter can't help but smile because, with how throughout the whole story it was established how being a super hero often sucks, he finally has someone to share the load with. Spider-man might have saved Miles but Miles has saved Peter. Also I just really like their conversations from the DLC and the Miles Morales game. I don't know how to explain it but I just really like the vibe they have with each other. I like mentor-student stories when both the mentor and the student are dynamic characters going through character development I really hope they will explore this dynamic more in the sequel given how its whole thing is "Be greater. Together"
Great video. What you said about MJ overall is pretty spot on. I love MJ as a model and actress as it has been in tbe comics, tv shows and movies forever but this little change makes more sense for this game and and Insomniac knew that. I personally liked playing as MJ simply because we've never had that in a Spidey game before. Playing as Spidey's normal-girl and love interest was cool. This game gas done many new things. Its also the first game where we play as Miles (not as Spiderman but just as the character if Miles himself) and thats awesome. Cant wait for the continuation in a few days time.
I've been a big Spidey fan for my whole life. Between the 1994 cartoon series, 2000 game, and 2002 movie trilogy (and the comics, of course), I thought my favourite incarnations of the character already existed. Then Spider-Man PS4 came out, and it quickly became my favourite piece of Spider-Man media. I can't even count how many times I've played through this game and its DLC since 2018. Probably about 12 times if I had to guess. It's my favourite game of all time. The Miles Morales game kicks ass, too. Spider-Man 2 has a lot to live up to. Can't wait for it.
I mean, I don’t realllly agree. it’s a drastically different kind of story and Peter B is at an entirely different place in his life than this Peter. In ITSV, Peter B needed Miles as much as Miles needed him.
@@Johnny2Cellos I don't mind the differences, and there are multiple elements in Miles education by the other Spider-People, but it was the leap of faith bit that was the thing that suddenly made Miles master his powers. . These games are a slow burn that feel like natural education, Peter feeling worried and Miles getting hospitalized for jumping off a bridge is really fun and adds to fleshing the story further.
Subbed, Spider-Man is my favorite character in general, and fav superhero, platinumed both recent Spider-Man games, hyped for the sequel it's so close! 🙌😃💯🤯
Not sure if this was mentioned in the comments already but afaik, mile's uncle ben moment was when he was bystander to peter parker's death while he already has spider powers
I’ll never forget this game’s announcement back in. E3 2016. The fact that insomniac games, the creators of ratchet & clank, spyro the dragon, etc. is something i didn’t know i needed. Insomniac is my all time favorite game developer/studio and they NAILED this character and their version of the web of spider-man this franchise is literally re-living the Batman Arkham series hype all over again and I can’t wait for the upcoming marvel’s spider-man 2
Sorry for the reupload! Had a weird issue with yesterday’s post! If ya already watched, consider letting it run through again so it doesn’t get throttled in the algorithm 💜🕸️🕷️
Glad I waited now 🙌
Already doing so man!😊😊😊
It's ok, always happy for more spidey!
So good I might watch it 3 times
Groovy
Aunt May asking Spider-Man to take his mask off so she can see her nephew absolutely gutted me. Good storytelling all around.
when Peter said “You knew?” to her, which were his exact words after Otto revealed he knew who Spider-Man was, made it cut deeper

Such an amazing scene.
In the end, that's all Peter wants to do.
man u should be making ur own videos
Ottos talk to Peter there always reminds me of uncle Bens “with great power comes great responsibility” and its almost the same sentiment until Otto says “we have to do whats best for those beneath us” which sets Peter off. I like to think it reminded him of Ben because he looked up to both of them but Otto is just too far gone.
Man. This comment actually brought a tear to my eyes. U described everything perfectly
I know it’s a video game about a made up character but this comment hit me in the feels good on you
This is soo fascinating.
Yup
Both learned the lesson of "it's okay to ask for help", each in his own way.
That is Spider-Man
"you do what you think is right, doc. It's all any of us can do"
Peter?
Is there any reason to believe that Dock Ock won’t reveal his identity? I don’t think the second game will deal with it but I can see him doing it out of spite.
@@seanlaffey3633He will not, I guess. The neural interface did actually make him crazy and now that he is off them, he will probably get help and probably even help Peter in the next game
Also, William Salyers’s voice acting made it so much more engaging.
After years of growing up sucking at trophy hunting, this and Miles Morales were my first 2 platinum trophies on PlayStation. 2 of my favorite games from the last decade bar none
Same
Unrelated but at 18:20 he says he's worried for Rio but I mean, they already killed his dad.
I'm more worried for her in Beyond The Spider-Verse 🗿
@@ccelite3782same
How can one suck at trophy hunting? You kind of just look at the trophies you need to get, then complete the respective objectives. Some trophies are hard/suck to get, but that's not being bad at it.
I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just curious.
Insomniac really made the best spider-man game hands down. The second one is gonna be so sick.
HYPE
Honestly for me insomniac did the second best adaptation for spiderman all time. I still think spectacular spiderman is better but maybe after second game that might change.
The thing is, a show/movie/cartoon can explore better side characters than a videogame. It would be very difficult to see characters from peter’s school being well developed on a game, on a cartoon is more simple.
For me spectacular spiderman understands what spiderman and all its characters is about and does an excellent job to portrait every character in the show. Insomniac’s spiderman does that well too.. its a hard fight i really want to see the sequel to make the final comparison
@@Johnny2Cellos when marvels spiderman 2 game come out will you do a review and a video essay on there take on venom. Loved this video
Shattered dimensions runs circles over marvels Spiderman PS4. The plot to save the universe had a better impact
I actually feel like they've done more justice to the character than comics have in years. It's become my personal favorite version of the character.
The scene where Pete and Miles revealed their powers to each other, was AMAZING! I had goosebumps. 🕷
The “NO YOUR WRONG…YOU WERE EVERYTHING I WANTED TO BE!!” Are my favorite lines not just in this game but in any game. Literally gives me chills every time
Just finished replaying Spider-Man since it came out. The ending still hits hard. Truly a perfect game.
Really?
Genuinely my favorite Peter Parker story and my second favorite Spider-Man story overall behind ITSV. Basically a perfect licensed game or just action game in general, and this video is making me even more unbelievably hyped for the sequel then I already am, AGGGH. Great job!
moving around in this game is so flowy and intuitive, i found that aspect of it absolutely addicting
For real! I have 300+ hours of gameplay saved on PlayStation from the 2018 PS4 game and most of it was mindlessly swinging through the city and stopping every crime that just randomly appeared whilst ignoring the missions
When people basically ignore your fast travel system, then you know you did something good. ❤
_"Buddy, if I had a nickel for every "don't move," I'd finally be able to pay my damn rent on time!"_
2017-2019 was game changing (no pun intended) for video games, GOW4, Breath of the Wild, Mario Oddysey, Spider-Man, RDR2 and a few others
My favorite headcanon is that Otto realized Peter was Spider-Man in the scene where he sees him with the suit but he just plays dumb so he doesn't make Peter worry over it
12:04 I never thought about the choice to make MJ a journalist in this way before, but I think you make a great point.
As someone who has been critical of the direction PlayStation has been taking, Spider-Man isn’t one of them. I just finished this game earlier this year and it’s easily one of the best written Spider-Man stories to come out from the franchise. I am eager to the play the sequel soon.
It really is such a banger, play the Miles Morales game if you haven't yet!

Of course, Otto becoming Dr Octopus is pretty predictable.
25:46
exactly.
It really goes to show to vocal talent Yuri has as a voice actor to use such similar voices for wildly different roles and managing to sell them both perfectly.
jw legacytag u said u first heard yuri in fire emblem i'm guessing u haven't seen the naruto anime bc yuri was the english VA for Sasuke Uchiha
Also Sasuke in English dub Naruto!
@@Thevikingninja117 I just said that

This is not only one of the best video games I’ve played, it’s one of the best Spidey stories. Otto’s fall is a genuine tragedy. May’s death was a real shock I never saw coming. Having Peter make the choice to let her die for ‘the greater good’ was heartbreaking.
It just works so well on so many levels.
Glad to have this back. Got scared for a second.
What I said before applies now, this is one of my favorite incarnations and interpretations of Spider-Man.
I really enjoyed the parts where you play as mj and miles. It shows you just how powerful spiderman really is. It's one of my favorite games.
16 days until the party.

too bad its ps5 only, heroes like spiderman shouldnt legally be allowed to be an exclusive...not buying ps5 for one game...sorry not sorry their exclusives arent enough to buy the ps5 should be like 50plus exclusives to make it worth it instead you got god of war, spiderman and what else that does near as good which is zero you're other exclusives always flop or get pc releases..so again proof the ps5 shouldnt of been released just like the series x....too early with nothing or not enough nex gen for the leap and purchase, funny how all my homies family friends etc have only upgraded for one or two games that is sad...

I genuinely hadn't preordered a game in about 10 years, I have pre-ordered Spider Man 2 because Insomniac are one of the few developers I trust because of how well they did with this game and Spider Man Miles Morales
they really haven't missed since spider man
My third fav moment in the game behind May's death and Ock's defeat is Peter texting MJ while swinging and walking on walls. Such a perfect texting moment while moving around trying to think. Relatability went through the roof.
The Reveal that Otto knew that peter was Spidey was really well done and i love this moment, you can really feel the emotions
It's one thing when the game makes you tear up, but when the reviews from years later do too...
DAMN
31:43 I forgot what a gigachad Norman was in this game 😂 bro is being dangled off the edge of a skyscraper and instead of groveling for his life he STILL decides to dogwalk the nerd threatening him 🗿
I played the remastered version of this game back in May. Absolutely loved it. 100%'d in a couple of days.
That Batman literally said: “I’m not gonna kill you, but I don’t have to save you.”
This Peter practically said: “I’m not gonna kill you, and you are beyond saving.”
One left their former mentor to die in a fiery blaze, and the other knew his mentor was already gone, but left him in a safe place for the authorities to collect him.
The pure savagery in Yuri’s voice is something we would hear frequently in Spider-Man 2, but the fact that Peter was that mad without the symbiote’s influence is staggering proof of his heart. Even when pushed to the edge, this Peter will not kill.
This video was AMAZING man! Thankss for all your hardwork! Love this version of peter and Miles 😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Great to see this back man!😊😊😊❤❤❤
"Just do what you think is right, Doc. That's all any of us can. Even when it hurts like hell." This games story was peak 😢
You're not alone
I feel genuinely bad if I’m swinging and don’t stop to help somebody at a crime. This game is taking over my mind and I love it for that.
i know it’s a 36 minute story retrospective, but fuck man i started tearing up at just the mere mention of some of this game’s best scenes
That first post-credits is also funny because they're *both* pretending that table is heavy.
I’m currently playing through this and Miles Morales with my girlfriend and she’s loving it! I also played my first play-through with the Scarlet Spider costume, would love if someone could step up and write a good version of the clone saga in any media lol.
Yessssssss! Honestly the Ben Reilly scarlet spider is one of my fave versions of Spider-Man hopefully one day that wish will come true!
I trust insomniac to write a excellent game for clone saga and superior spiderman sagas

I hate how much I adore this game because I can't even play the sequel since I don't have a PS5.
Still, though, this is at least in my top 3 video games of all time. Love running through it all every couple of months.
The only few things that could've made this game even MORE perfect:
more swing tricks: there are very few for pete
kept the old face for Peter: the remastered pete looks TOO young for a "spidey" EIGHT years into his work
changed MJ to Gwen: MJs the basic "strong independent woman" and gets mad at Peter for no reason ALOT in the game
And have an even MORE DIFFICULT, difficulty: since it ends at ultimate- but you can unlock an ability where you one shot enemies but can be one shot as well. they should've made an "Equal" difficulty where your dodging and combat is pushed to the limit, but you can 1 shot everything- even bosses. AS proven many times- spidey holds back, and even when he DOESN'T his punches "by my best estimate, was over twelve hundred foot-pounds" - Doc Ock
this game is my favorite iteration of Peter Parker and spiderman and one of my favorite games of all time. It also has my favorite Stan Lee cameo
"YOU KNEW!!!!!" vs "You knew?"
Ngl.. not sure how I felt about the advanced suit when the trailer first dropped... it has now become my favourite Spidey suit after the superior Spiderman and black suit
It grew on me a lot! I think I don't love the details as much, but I do lovvve the white spider
Miles traversing towards city hall and the dead dude hanging out of his was some gnarly imagery, imagine if they had allowed for more gore
omg listening to the movie/game scores while reading the comics is awesome and i'm totally stealing that! great video as always, i love you're analysis every time!
Love the game and the suit. And the May scene left me in tears. Never before have I ever felt like Spider-Man then this game
Oh wow, it must’ve been weird for Yuri to record lines talking to The Detective. Since they share the same first name lol
AND Yuri is voiced by Tara Platt, who is Yuri Lowenthal's wife.
It's Yuri talking to Yuri!
It's Yuri-ception!
Lets not forget about this game's music. UUGGHH, THE MUSSICCC IS SO GOOD.
Spiderverse movies and insomniac is the best thing that ever happened to the Spiderman franchise hands down
Other than the comics ofcourse
I like mentor-student stories when both the mentor and the student are dynamic characters going through character development
I really hope they will explore this dynamic more in the sequel given how its whole thing is "Be greater. Together"
Subscribed. Spider-Man PS4 is my favorite game ever and you have summed it up brilliantly.
Btw love your Spider-Man videos found them today I’ve almost watched them all you do really great work
I'll still never forgive them for recasting an older, lesser seen depiction of Peter for a BTEC Tom Holland
He looked way too old imo
I'll rewatch it with no problem and write my original post.
I still miss the OG Peter Parker face. I'm not a fan of the switch.
Aunt May scene was wild that whole scene the tough choice to be made. Just perfection
Peter tutoring Miles here is done better than it is in Miles animated films.
This game was so dope currently about to pick up part 2 of this game and I can’t for your video on it months from now
Subbed, Spider-Man is my favorite character in general, and fav superhero, platinumed both recent Spider-Man games, hyped for the sequel it's so close! 🙌😃💯🤯
I used Scarlett Spider 100% my first 2 playthroughs and remains most used!
This is one of the only games to ever make me cry.
Insomniac is my all time favorite game developer/studio and they NAILED this character and their version of the web of spider-man
this franchise is literally re-living the Batman Arkham series hype all over again and I can’t wait for the upcoming marvel’s spider-man 2
