      It sounds good in concept but the problem for me was that the “friendly neighborhood” stuff just felt like they didn’t know what to do with Miles. Like the friendly neighborhood stuff should still be as compelling and interesting as Peter’s plot if they are going that route lol

      Welp, this is where the 2 main characters game starts to get really problematic. Spidermans core is essentially a 1 man vs the world against all odds. In order to develop Peters symbiot arc, he has to struggle by himself, there can't always be a Miles to save the day for him(or save him in that manner). The problem is it creates a lot of weird plot holes, like where the hell is Miles at this moment why isn't he there. I also really agree with the video, the first spiderman had this vibe, like they simply did the right thing with writing with a lot of plot twists. Here they went more with a hollywood approach of special effects/ blasts/ venom/ symbiote everywhere. 8-8.5/10 for this game is still very right, since gameplay improved.

    The one real issue I had with the game was that Harry's growing animosity towards Peter felt so incredibly rushed that when he became Venom, it really did not feel earned at all. The game could've used another hour or two to really flesh that out.

    • @the_happykodiak2421
      @the_happykodiak2421 Год назад +101

      This.
      To me this game is a 9.5/10 but that .5 goes to how rapidly the final act happens.
      Harry gets so angry with Peter and Peter goes from 0-100 after basically one and a half missions.
      Having a bit more time to see this unfold as well as have an explanation about Harry getting so mad, like maybe he is going through withdrawal or something
      Venom also only torments peter a hand full of times.
      In Spectacular Spider-Man venom torments him time and time again and not tripping out Spider sense made it all the more scary.
      In this he just pulled up and said some shit then brawled

      I'm only at 80% completion rn so I don't know if what I'm about to say gets addressed, but to me there were hints of this throughout the beginning and middle of the game that could've gone somewhere but didn't. Like when Harry and Peter are throwing the basketball or playing the carnival games, I was kinda like, what if Peter being too perfect at everything and having MJ and stuff is building resentment in Harry, and then it feels like the suit literally left him to die because Peter is better (+ the stuff with his dad). Like it's all there but especially considering Harry actively has the symbiote that early in the story a little more outward resentment would have fit well.

    The complaint that Miles feels very much like middle-aged white guys trying to write a black teenager without accidentally doing anything offensive I feel is so much more potent since Across the Spider-Verse is still somewhat fresh in my memory. Miles and his family feel so effortlessly authentic and genuine in that film while this game sands down all of his edges and just kind of makes him and his world feel so bland. They keep repeating the same message about Miles needing to embrace what makes him himself, but I don’t even know what that's supposed to mean given how he doesn't really seem to have any outstanding passions or interests.

    • @awsomeboy360
      @awsomeboy360 Год назад +374

    • @brycebitetti1402
      @brycebitetti1402 Год назад +226

      @kryptoskillet1131 I didn't say that, rather that his blandness feels like a result of white writers trying to write an Afro-Latino main character and failing to make him interesting out of fear of doing anything offensive. To make sure that doesn't happen, they keep him confined in this sanitized little box. I'm not saying that's most definitely what happened, just that that's what Miles' character in this game feels like. It's beyond his hobbies, it's that fact that there's so little friction with anything he does. Sure he's struggling with his rage against Martin Li, but that never really seeps into anything else. He doesn't get angry and blow up on his mom or his friends. He's clearly still got some unresolved issues involving the loss of his dad, but when his mom decides to enter the dating pool again he never feels threatened by that. Nor does his mom get on his ass about not finishing his essay, shirking his responsibilities to his family and his future to go and be Spider-Man. Everyone just acts far too amicably and with too much clinical logic behind their actions. Like yeah, Miles should know that his mom choosing to date again doesn't erase his dad's memory or disrespect it in any way, but when we're in a bad headspace we don't always act the way we know we should. Peter fairs better because the Symbiote is pretty much free angst, but before and after that arc it's the same issue. Everything's too sugary sweet. You don't get the sense that Peter was already battling tons of inner conflict before the Symbiote took hold and amplified it, just that it made him kind of an asshole. There's a hint of it in his inability to let go of May's memory, and perhaps fearing that he could lose Harry and MJ as well, but the game just doesn't dig deep enough into the idea to really make it anything more than a footnote.

    Honestly, you could fix the Miles/Venom problem with the final boss fight by having Miles and his supporting cast hang with Peter and his supporting cast at Coney Island. Miles and his friends could leave early cuz they're kids and their parents want them home so events can play out the exact same way, except Miles and Harry have now shared more than a few sentences together.

    I get the Miles complaint but I think where Miles is coming from with his fear of people leaving him is more of him feeling left out with people moving on with their lives.
    - Rio is dating again
    - Ganke and Hailey already good with college while he still is even yet to finish hi essay
    - Numerous times in the game Peter would leave him out of missions and just go either solo or with Harry
    Also, I think Miles’ rage towards Li started when he saw him again at Raft since the first game. There are times wherein you’d think you’ve moved on from something until the trauma kicks back in when a familiar face or memory comes back.
    It also aligns with him and Peter reconciling after the symbiote fight because they have been isolating themselves from the rest by succumbing to fear and doubt, which even the symbiote loves to prey on.

      I was thinking the same thing. A lot of the criticisms that Cosmonaut makes, while his own and while valid, feels like they specifically missed a deeper reading as to why a character would be feeling the way that they're feeling. Miles is still a kid and his father honestly just died. He has a lot going on before even stacking on his active spider-man duties. It's not going to be easy to just kinda get over it all. I do think they could've and should've handles Miles better in the narrative but it's not bad.

    • @alexrampersad3954
      @alexrampersad3954 Год назад +4

      Brother what are you talking about😂
      1. Rio dating again certainly doesn’t make miles feel like shes leaving him. If anything, it might have sparked some animosity between them because of his respect for his father. But thats not his character.
      2. Not having finished your college essay doesn’t mean you aren’t going to college dude. Theres a deadline for essay submissions. So Ganke and Hayley aren’t better or worse off than Miles here aside from not procrastinating.
      3. Peter teams up with Miles literally every single chance he gets aside from one mission with Agent Venom. ONE Mission. That aside, in their personal lives, it is true that peter hasn’t been picking up Miles calls, but even then, that was for like max a day.
      If any of these things are enough to create this gaping insecurity in Miles’ heart, then he certainly wouldn’t be “ready” to take on the role as the one and only spiderman.
      Finally, Miles was not even set on killing Mr. Negative. In his mind, it was at least debatable the whole time. Plus, when he decides to save him it really took away any level of complexity that Miles character could have had because he already made the same choice earlier in the boat propeller scene. ALSO, if we’re talking about seeing familiar things and how they bring back trauma, don’t you think that seeing anything related to a dead father would make you think of the guy who killed him!? Thats not just Mr. Negative at the raft, but also his dads christmas albums and his dads clothes and his dads pictures and his dads accolades and the memorial site and all of the above.

    • @Jone-c9i
      @Jone-c9i Год назад +8

      @@alexrampersad3954
      - I clearly mentioned that Rio dating again means that she’s trying to move on with her life after what happened to her husband. For Miles, while he doesn’t hate it, he does feel left out as he’s still stuck on finding Li because of what happened to his dad. It’s that feeling of being stuck in the past when you don’t want to while you see people around you trying to move on when you can’t.
      - Yes not finishing your college essay doesn’t mean you’re not going to college but seeing your friends already having a secured university can bring pressure for some people. Also, not everyone has loads of college options, making it a “break it or make it” scenario
      - Sure they team up but whenever Miles wants to talk about personal stuff, Peter would brush him off or is even too busy. He even gets a bit insecure when he finds our that Peter is doing missions with Harry, further adding to him feeling isolated while people are doing their own thing without him
      - Being Spider-Man has always had to do with feeling insecure and unsure of one self. It’s one of the many things that makes the character relatable. We have literally seen Peter doubt himself in his journey but that’s what makes Spidey great is that he always gets back up Also, this is still a Miles that is not that far ahead in being Spider-Man compared to Peter who has been in it for years already
      - Just because he decided to save people in the ferry and makes the decision to spare him during the fight, does not in any way take any complexity from him. As a matter of fact, it shows his maturity as a person and how he’s ready to receive the torch of Spidey from Peter. He literally was able to reform one of his enemies, which Peter even highlighted in the game as something he was never able to do.
      - Also, sure a lot of things can remind a person of their trauma, but of course Miles reacts differently to seeing his father’s killer as opposed to seeing his father’s christmas albums. Literally, the difference was already given to us in the games. He felt melancholic and nostalgic when he saw his dad’s albums as they were one of the best things about him. Meanwhile, he reacted in a different light when he saw Li because obviously it reminded him about the bad memories involving his dad and the numerous people that died in that same day.

      @@Jone-c9i Everything you’ve said is only either barely referenced or inferable from the story which is why Cosmo says theres no build up for it. These things aren’t sufficient if you have to explain them so thoughtfully to even get some semblance of significance. And even then, half the things you said are irrelevant because they take place for like 2 seconds OR they just dont make sense from a writing standpoint. No matter who you are, you cant have your university locked in if all youve done is finish your college essay ahead of time. Early acceptance means you wrote your essay during a different semester entirely and Miles would not have been barred from the Opportunity AND seeing as he’s so intelligent and he’s not like poor or anything, he would have a wide variety of options. As for your other statements, he still doesn’t feel left out with the RIO situation… I promise you he doesn’t want to be present for his mom shagging some random old dude. Again, if anything it probably frustrates him out of respect for his dad. The Martin Li thing trauma we’ve been over. And you need to understand that for growth to have taken place, Miles needed to choose his anger for Li in either the propeller scene or the scene where they fight, because otherwise, nothing changes in his reasoning across the story. And that’s exactly what happened, or what didn’t happen I mean, because nothing changed. Miles was just the best at everything the whole time. His inner turmoil never manifested for the audience to understand that Miles had to triumph. Every single impactful character moment this guy Miles had was in a dream sequence. This is why there is no build up for his “fears.” Even Peter didn’t get enough build up in the black suit, but at least he got some

      @@alexrampersad3954 Huh? Miles feeling left out with his mom is more of him seeing his mom move on in a sense from his father’s death because they never talked about it before and Rio only brought it up when she was dating someone already. It was new for Miles and he took it from an angle of his mom moving on while he was still stuck in the past, literally one of his arcs in the entire game.
      Also mentioned how seeing his friends already accepted to a university is another showing of Miles insecurity as his friends don’t have to juggle normal life and being a superhero. Literally the man is overthinking everything because of the stuff he has to deal with in this game.
      Inner turmoil? Miles was so close in letting people die just so he could get Li. The same way that he was so invested in catching him regardless if Peter was with him. We see this in the game and its why it was powerful to see him let things go with Li as both of them saw the anger within Peter’s psyche towards his villains.

I think thats a pretty great scene and what we know about Li and his powers it worked really well for me considering Miles feels responsible for the death of his friend in his own game and doesnt want to lose anyone else who knows he is Spider-Man. So Li is a huge threat to him. But yeah he does feel like a backseat but i also kinda love he's more the friendly neighborhood spider and peter is the alpha giga chad ill destroy all these villains juggernaut especially when wearing the symbiote. I also disagree on the chemistry thing with MJ. And their version of Peter i think is strong because of the first game and learning about how much Peter blames himself over literally everything. Like Peter being able to forgive Sandman in SM3 sure that one i guess makes sense, what happened WAS an accident. Li did what he did. It makes sense for this story that Miles learn to just leave it. Li took his Dad away and he was scared that something like that would happen with Rio and Ganke. He’s deathly afraid of letting anyone down because he’s scared that if he does he will be completely alone. Also, I disagree with what you said about his inner fears not being represented in his day to day. One of his first conversations with Ganke in this game has Miles scared wondering if he pissed Ganke off. This fear even extends to Peter in the next conversation, asking if he made Peter angry as well. He clearly is afraid of failure/being alone and that’s shown at every turn.

      The ending was probably overlooked in this regard but while it’s good Peter gets time to relax and do something outside of Spider-Man work. I think miles is not given that same opportunity in this scene, because he also needs to work on his personal life too. I think my biggest letdown was how easily Vulture, Electro, and Shocker were gotten rid of. After Scorpion's death, I thought we'd have missions where we have to help rescue villains from Kraven's Hunters, like what they did with Tombstone but more of it and with the villains fighting alongside you. And it really makes little sense that Kraven could kill the others so easily. Electro shoots bolts of electricity and could be an Avenger-level threat, Vulture flies, and Shocker shoots shockwaves that pulverize walls. Kraven's gimmick is that he's a highly skilled hunter, and other Spider-Man works have shown that won't always cut it when dealing with people with super powers.
    But I am liking what they're teasing for the next game. I think we're going to see both Green Goblin and Doc Ock in it, and I hope they make Norman still sympathetic. I honestly feel sorry for the guy; he's not evil like other versions of himself. He's a man who's watching the people he loves dies, and he can't seem to do anything to stop it. I can definitely see a quiet moment after a fight where Peter reveals its him under the mask, and reminds Norman he knows what he's going through, and revenge won't save Harry.

It's going to be strange for Miles to insert himself into the Carnage and Wraith story that he had no connection to at all. What makes it an 8 from the 9 that Spider-Man 1 was that the first game felt more personal. With how Miles left a lot to be desired in terms of writing, there's also the hurdle of how fewer time there is for the characters to properly interact with eachother compared to 1. It feels like a good story that was cut down by a needed 7 hours with the entire thing going at a break neck pace. The first game had plenty of moments where Pete talked with MJ and Otto without any of the spiderman stuff being the focus, instead it was them and their lives and issues. What sticks out to me is the first time we meet Norman at Ottos lab, Norman and Otto clearly have a history and you can sense that Otto doesn't like Norman being there, and Pete helps him perk up and they get back to work. One of my complaints about the game are the podcasts. JJJ isn't as explosive or funny as he was in the previous games and only just really reports the news as it is (though his rescue scene and a few episodes are the exception to this).
    But the Danikast is just awful. She's constantly worried about Spider-Man's new black suit for no real reason and, when shit hits the fan, she's obnoxiously trying to be a voice of hope. It's some of the most eye-rolling, cringe-inducing dialogue in the game. There really is no reason for her podcast to be playing either since Miles really only started listening to it since he didn't appreciate listening to JJJ like Peter does.
    Like imagine when the aforementioned shit goes down all podcasts just stop and we get nothing but police radio chatter and emergency broadcasts playing since that would be what the Spider-Men are likely to be listening to in that situation. Would have really set the tone of those scenes and how dire things really are.

The symbiote in video games should always make you feel crazy as much as peter feels in my opinion, instead of Spider-Man But The Comic Tells You He Hits Harder. I wasnt as much as a fan of the spider legs, one because they legit never showed up in the story at all when at some points it would have been really useful to use them and because theyre a little too high tech for me as well.
    The gadget complaint is something I definitely get but Peter literally had an anti gravity matrix in the first game. He was most definitely still super high tech there too and a lot of the game centered around those gadgets which I know for sure some people didnt like. I think they did well balancing gadgets / abilities but they should have had more gadgets than you can swap the wheel with similar to your abilities.

    I agree with some points in your critique. It was disappointing that some gadgets didn't return, like the impact webs, which I loved from the first game. While the game does make you feel like a superpowered beast, I personally prefer a more grounded approach for Spider-Man like you do. However, it's hard to complain when the game executes it so well; that's more of a personal preference nitpick.
    The story wasn't as impactful as the first game, but I still find it an incredible feat to compete with and at times even surpass their own predecessor. It's truly impressive how they managed to achieve this.
    Regarding the MJ sequences, I don't mind them. They're an improvement over the first game, and when you're playing as her, it's mostly fine.
    The only part where I disagree is with the boss fights. I believe most of the first game's fights were set in arenas with different gimmicks, except for the Electro x Vulture boss fight.
    Edit: I know the impact webs are still in the game. For my personal enjoyment I just preferred it when it was it's own separate gadget, not to say that I completely dislike this change. Y'all are acting like I don't get certain things lmao

    • @cosmoplays2773
      @cosmoplays2773 Год назад +2

      @@samichoudry6861 I totally get your point. More gadgets might indeed make the gameplay feel less grounded for some people, and it's a matter of personal preference. While the reduced gadget wheel can contribute to a more focused and grounded experience, some players who enjoyed the variety of gadgets from the first game may miss that aspect. Ultimately, it depends on how one values the balance between gadget variety and maintaining a more down-to-earth feel in the game.
      I think the way that they integrated these gadgets in this one is pretty darn great, but a potential issue for some people is that Peter and Miles can feel rather similar in terms of gameplay sometimes. In the first game, the gadgets encouraged a more distinctive "Spider-Man way" of playing.
      While I personally don't mind the changes too much and believe you can still have a great Spider-Man experience with the new approach, it can be a bit disorienting for fans seeking a truly authentic experience. The shift in how Peter feels in the game may make it less distinct and grounded for those who prefer the classic Spider-Man style of gameplay.
      I think this game is awesome! There's definitely some game improvement and only just that. The reason I don't say completely an overall improvement in absolute is because I recognize that for hardcore Spider-Man fans, it might be a bit disappointing due to the changes and some other instances.

    When he's in Symbiote mode, the would have the 4 powers and abilities. Gadgets are locked out of this mode.
    When he's in normal Spider Man mode, he would not have access to those powers at all. But in contrast, he gets all selection of his gadgets.

He feels extremely disconnected from the main story for the first half of the game and a majority of his missions for that portion of the game are basically filler as they either serve as the start of his side quest storylines or as the start of some of the open world activities. It sucks too because that time in the game would've been better spent by helping develop his relationships with the main cast, especial Harry as that could've easily bonded over the death's of their parents and how they have to live up to their parent's memory (which we kind of get but not really). It's honestly funny that he feels so disconnected from the main story because when you break everything in this game down, he's probably the MVP in terms of his contributions to the heroes winning.

Miles literally had to save Peter TWICE from himself. One from the Symbiote and the other wirh Mr Negative. This goes against all Spider-Man media wheee Peter through his OWN WILLPOWER overcomes the Symbiote influences.

The second game I felt tried to do so much in such a short span of time, which kind of made the story a bit too inconsistently paced with how they handled certain plotlines and storybeats compared to the first. At the end of it all I was sadly left wanting a lot more, especially when Insomniac did so damn well for their first outing with the character.

    I think a misleading thing about the gadgets this time around is the idea there are only four. In subtle ways there are more, but they are tied more to skills. Impact webs for example are now a parry follow up mechanic. So still useful, but you have to earn them. You can’t just instantly spam a few impact webs to take multiple enemies down.
    Web bombs have been made into a much smaller scale splash zone for upgraded normal webbing. I get why they did it. They wanted the gadgets to be less spammy and Instead incorporated into the combos.
    As for his story complaints. Totally fair. It’s a subjective aspect but I’d say it’s objectively a little jankier because it’s balancing too much without going deep enough into a few things. That said, I’d still say thoroughly enjoyable and leagues above many other games. I personally didn’t get too annoyed by immersion issues like Kraven’s army. I know for some it’s not an excuse… but it’s a game. We need enemies to fight, and I’d be more put off by a huge swarm of petty criminals constantly attempting the same crimes despite Spider-Man stopping them every time.
    I also don’t mind slower moments to get more info about the world. Wholesome moments at home are nice for character building.
    The MJ missions less so. Learning about most of Kraven’s off screen kills through her stealth sections wasn’t very satisfying. The horror chase scene with the symbiote possessed Peter was probably the best one, but not by much.
    Boss fights were leagues better than the previous. Less spamming webs, hitting and the rinse repeat. There were actual mechanics to exploit in the fights while also carefully using parties and dodges. I died a lot in this game compared to the first in which that was rare even on the highest difficulty. I agree some swinging related boss battles are sorely missed here, but hey…. A green goblin fight in the future sounds perfect for that.

    • @HotFootBunny

      I ain't really a fan of them, they promote just spamming every single gadget you have at the beginning of the fight instead of using them strategically, they also aren't really that unique from each other and aren't that good for stealth either, compared to the Frist game, it's a down grade for me (gadgets where kinda spammy in the frist game but they made up for it with enemies being immune to webs and the long recharge time this game gadgets are best when you spam all of them as quick as possible to get the hordes of enemies off of you)
      As for boss fights, yeah Better but you can Cheese every boss if you stay in the air which I didn't like, they did fix this with kraven with the bell stopping that but most you can just stay in the air in tell you have a opening

    I dunno, I feel like Peter's quips tend to be cringey / not-actually-funny in ALL media... like in general, occasionally I will chuckle at a quip, but I've always felt that he tries too hard with his quips in comics/movies/games overall. Some of his jokes in the comics have been god-awful, and my own take on it is that it's basically an empowered nerd trying to come up with funny comebacks, which is about as unfunny as you could imagine that scenario.
    I remember reading somewhere that someone said Pete quips to throw off his enemies, which makes sense if you consider that the enemy is distracted by how annoying and unfunny jokes being hurled at them are.
    TL;DR - I've never expected Peter's quips to be genuinely funny, I always expected them to be tryhard gibberish to fill space and distract enemies.

But Miles barely interacts with Peter during his descent. It should have felt like the entire Miles arc was leading up to the climatic moment where he had to stand up to Peter. The boss fights were cool but I hated how most of them were in confined spaces! For example, there were moments in the "Scream" boss fight where I kept kicking the boss out of bounds and whenever I tried to go after them the game would throw me back into the designated arena and I had to wait until they jumped back in to continue fighting them. There were also times when you would perform a finisher and it was blocked by a tree or wall. Hopefully when we get the inevitable Carnage DLC, they'll have the boss fights in a more open area.

    I had this really simple idea on how to rework Miles' story:
    First, instead of Miles suddenly deciding he wants revenge, have Kraven sort of mentor him. Miles doesn't really have a father figure anymore (he has Peter but they're closer to peers as mentor/mentee) and Kraven wouldn't necessarily be interested in killing the weaker of two Spider-men. So Kraven befriends and takes Miles under his wing, seemingly helping him deal with his linger trauma over his dad's death but also stoking his willingness to get revenge.
    This would not only have Miles' arc more closely parallel Peter's with the Symbiote, but also give Kraven a stronger presence in the story
